This is the first part of my X-Men story. These stories are written in a screenplay format. It is a little self-serving as the character of Mitchel (Quantum) is me. This also takes place in the X-Men Animated Srries Universe (with a few additions of my own added throughout). I wrote this years ago but finally have the courage to post them and I hope you enjoy them. Check my profile for rest of the chapters.
FADE IN: ORIGINS
Scene: "Fated Meeting" Memorial Day 2000, Baiting Hollow Country Club in the Hamptons on Long Island, New York.
A beautiful 17-year-old blonde sits on a long chair by the country club's pool. She notices a group of boys picking on one of the pool boys. The lead boy pours his soda over his head. She gets up ready to confront them.
BOYS (TOGETHER)
(Angrily and tauntingly)
THAT'S WHAT YOU GET YOU MUTANT FREAK! WE DON'T WANT YOUR KIND AROUND HERE!
YOUNG WOMAN
Oh really? And what kind is that?
The Boys notice the woman now and turn to her. The lead boy Francis Jr. (the country club owner's son) addresses her.
FRANCIS JR.
You know exactly what we mean Emma. Mutants like him are freaks and they don't belong in this world, much less my country club!
EMMA FROST
I doubt your father would agree with you. After all he hired this boy.
FRANCIS JR.
What does the old man know anyway, the kind-hearted fool! When I take over this place, no mutants will be allowed in here!
EMMA FROST
(Angrily)
Well until that day comes, I suggest you back off!
FRANCIS JR.
And just who is going to make us? You?
Francis Jr. suddenly starts acting like a seal. Jumping around and "barking". He then (still in his suit) dives headfirst into the pool! The other boys look baffled. Francis Jr. emerges from the pool and has come to his senses.
FRANCIS JR.
(Confused and angry)
What the hell was that! My suit is ruined!
ONE OF THE OTHER BOYS
Francis what are you doing? Why were you acting like a seal? Why did you dive into the pool like that?
FRANCIS JR.
How the hell should I know?
EMMA FROST
Well Frankie that's what you get for being a mutant hating jerk.
FRANCIS JR.
(Now out of the pool and sopping wet)
What are you saying Emma?
EMMA FROST
You really are dumb. Don't you get it? I'm a mutant (a telepath) and I took control of your mind and made you do that. Now be good little boys and run home to your mommies before I make you think you can fly and have you jump off the lighthouse!
The boys all get terrified looks in their eyes and run as fast as they can out to the parking lot and as far away from Emma as they can get! Emma then turns to address the boy on the floor covered in soda.
EMMA FROST
Are you okay? Don't worry about those guys; they won't be bothering you anymore. What is your name anyway?
BOY
My name is Mitchel. Thank you. I was too afraid to fight back. They must have seen me practicing using my powers. It is scary, I can't control them.
EMMA FROST
No problem, kid. I get it. A couple of years ago, when my powers manifested, I could not control them either. There is a learning curve to it.
Emma helps Mitchel and admires him. She did not know any other mutants and thus identified with him. Emma had dealt with bullying (due to being a mutant) in the past.
EMMA
You're kind of cute. How about you hang around with me and I'll help you to control your powers. I want to be a teacher someday and you can be my practice student. How old are you?
MITCHEL
Really? That would be amazing. I am 16 by the way.
EMMA
Well Mitch, this could be a start of a great friendship!
END SCENE
SCENE: LOVE? Labor Day 2001 at Emma's home in the Hampton's
After just over a year of friendship Emma and Mitchel have grown closer and closer. Emma's mother Hazel addresses them as they sit in the Frost family kitchen.
HAZEL FROST
It has been so lovely to see how close you two have gotten. Before last year I must admit that Emma had passion for very few things. But Mitchel you have been her passion since then.
EMMA
Oh, stop embarrassing me mom!
HAZEL
Yes, honey I know. You are Miss Tough Girl.
EMMA
(Rolling her eyes)
Can we have some privacy, please?
We see a flashback of Emma's father (Winston Frost) leaving his family and Emma's two older siblings (Christian and Adrienne) joining him. Even Emma's younger sister Cordelia resented Emma for making her father leave. However, we then see that they left out of fear of Emma's extraordinary telepathic abilities. Years later after his wife Hazel (who he did not divorce) convinced him, Cordelia Winston and the two older siblings came back into the Frost family. Still, they feared Emma and did not move into the old family home.
MITCHEL
Your mom is excited about me. Do you feel more for me then you let on?
EMMA
(Blushing)
NO!
Mitch stares at her
EMMA
Okay, maybe a little.
MITCHEL
You know you can't lie to me, right?
Mitchel's power over energy gives him many unique abilities. The mitochondria in his cells are abnormally large. On top of being able to read other people's energy (to tell if they are lying or when people are near to him) he can also project his energy into blasts, force fields, and even project it out to pick up items from afar. Emma, as a telepath, has many abilities such as broadcasting and receiving thoughts, altering perception, psychic shielding, astral projection, mind switching, and even mental sedation and pain influence. She also has the unique ability to turn her entire body into pure diamond. In this state she has limitless stamina, is immune to poisons, impervious to heat and cold, and even numbed from pain. These abilities make her an excellent teacher who can understand her students better than anyone.
EMMA
I do truly feel for you Mitch, as I never have for anyone else before in my life.
As Emma says this and reaches for Mitchel, her hand half turns into her diamond form.
MITCHEL
I truly love you. You have saved my life. I can control my powers like never before. I feel closer to you than anyone else in my life.
EMMA
Really? Even your parents and sister? I mean you are so close with them.
MITCHEL
I am but our connection is even deeper than that.
Upon hearing this Emma unexpectedly hugs Mitchel and begins to cry. This embrace leads to two more years of a loving relationship. Mitchel joked that Emma was his White Queen because of her dedication to that color. Emma responded by calling Mitchel a Quantum Battery because of his endless supply of energy. Although she eventually shortened it to just Quantum.
End Scene
Scene: Deception and Manipulation Labor Day 2003, Emma's house.
Mitchel arrives at Emma's house ahead of his final year of college at Columbia University. They had both been living there and Emma had just graduated that May. Although as Mitchel approached the house something was off. It was gone. It looked as if a giant bomb had gone off in it. A mysterious man is also standing just outside the gates surrounding the property.
MITCHEL
WHAT IN THE WORLD! EMMA! NO!
MYSTERIOUS MAN
Young man I know this is unsettling but control yourself. This disaster is awful enough already.
MITCHEL
Who in the world are you? What happened here? What did you do?
MYSTERIOUS MAN
I can assure you this was not my doing and I am Sebastian Shaw. I am a friend to Mister Frost. He came here to reconcile things with his family. Although his daughter Emma lost control of her powers.
MITCHEL
What? No way! Emma was always in control.
SHAW
Her hatred for her father boiled over. She destroyed everyone and the house. They are all dead.
Mitchel falls to his knees uncontrollably crying and has no words. He gets up and leaves. After he leaves Shaw smiles evilly.
END SCENE
Scene: X-Saves Central Park, Day, one month later.
Dejected and alone, Mitchel feels lost. As we see, even his parents cannot help him get over Emma. He even dropped out of Columbia. He sits alone on a bench until he hears someone call him.
MYSTERIOUS VOICE
Mutant. We can help you…
Mitchel looks around and sees no one. But having been with Emma for so long, he quickly realizes it is a telepath talking to him in his mind.
MITCHEL
Who are you?
MYSTERIOUS VOICE
My name is Professor Charles Xavier. I created a school for the gifted like yourself or mutants if you'd prefer. We help mutants learn to control their powers. One of my students is sitting right across from you.
MITCHEL
You mean the guy with the funky glasses?
PROFESSOR XAVIER
(Laughingly)
Yes, he is Scott Summers; also called Cyclops. He too has energy projection like you. Although Scott can only shoot his from his eyes and without his visor, or those funky glasses as you put it, his powers never stop.
MITCHEL
Wow, that is tough. This school of yours. I am not sure I need it. I am pretty in control with my powers.
PROFESSOR XAVIER
True, but you emotionally need a family more than your parents and sister can give you right now. Please talk to Scott.
Cyclops walks over and sits next to Mitchel.
CYCLOPS
What do you say? Professor X's school is the best thing I have ever done with my life. I guarantee you that it will be your best decision too.
MITCHEL
(After pausing to think for a few moments)
You're right. I just cannot sit here and mope. This is an opportunity. I want to, in my girlfriend's honor, be a teacher at this school one day. To help young mutants learn to control their abilities. Where do I sign up?
Cyclops smiles at Mitchel's sudden reawakening. He takes him to a deserted part of the park and uncloaks the X-Jet, leaving Mitchel in complete awe.
CYCLOPS
Pretty cool, huh?
MITCHEL
AMAZING! Oh wait, what's with calling yourself Cyclops by the way?
CYCLOPS
All the members of our team have code names. It's kind of a tradition. Do you have one for yourself?
MITCHEL
Quantum. She always called me Quantum and I will keep that name in her memory. But team? Didn't you say you guys were teachers?
CYCLOPS
We are but there are those out there that believe that mutants and humans cannot coexist. In between teaching, we fight to stop those people from harming humans or other mutants. We fight for the equal rights of mutants and humans alike.
QUANTUM
Amazing; count me in but still: what team?
CYCLOPS
The X-Men.
For the next eleven years Mitchel (now known as Quantum) fights side by side with the X-Men and quickly becomes a respected teacher at The Xavier School For The Gifted (and is well known for teaching history); meeting more mutants than he ever knew existed. He becomes one of the core members of the X-Men and has a very joyous and fulfilling decade with them…
