"I still can't believe father is gone." Quan said quietly.
Ce nodded as he stood before Sun Jian's grave, Quan stood just behind him to his left, on the right was their sister Shangxiang who had her head bowed.
"It just doesn't make sense." The girl said, her voice wavering. "Father always seemed so...unstoppable. For him to be-"
"I know." Sun Ce said quickly. "I'm sorry but...there's nothing more we can do here, we've paid our respects to father, now we just...there's nothing for it, our future doesn't look good at the moment I'll admit. But I can't subject you to that."
He turned to face them and they saw he looked worried.
"I just...I don't know what to do with father gone, it's like we've just lost...everything, he was our everything and now he's been taken from us. "He said, trying to keep his voice steady.
Their grief was great but it was clearly even harder on Ce who was trying to stay strong despite his grief, not letting his emotions show on the surface for the sake of his siblings and the retainers who were also present and performing their own respects.
"This leaves us trapped, we've lost Changsha, I had to let our army go so they'd at least be able to return to their homes, if they stayed with us they'd have to leave their families behind, but it leaves us with nowhere to go. Our ancestral lands are in the hands of other lords." He continued. "Our ancestral home is still in our possession however, but naturally there's no authority or power there, but it'll be safe…"
The look on his face made Quan and Shangxiang even more worried.
His words filled them with even more horror.
"I can't put either of you at further risk, so our uncle has agreed to take the two of you and Mother to our ancestral home, in the meantime, I've got to go and make sure I can at least keep us safe."
"What, brother no!" Shangxiang cried.
Quan stepped up. "What are you saying, you can't be serious, it-"
"It's the only way." Ce said firmly. "You need to go with Mother and our uncle, take care of each other, in the meantime, I need to go to Shouchun...I'll have to do whatever Yuan Shu asks of me, to protect our family and hopefully, in the near future, we'll find a way to rise again."
It was clear from his tone that Ce was not budging on this issue, but still Quan and Shangxiang didn't like it. But in the end they knew they had no other choice so they left with Sun Jing and their mother for the Sun ancestral home. Meanwhile Sun Ce, with only Huang Gai, Cheng Pu, Han Dang and Zhu Zhi accompanying him, made his way to Shouchun, to submit himself to Yuan Shu's service and hope for the best. This was all he could do now, all that was left for him after everything.
