Chapter 6: Making a decision

Flashback

Mid-January, 1993

Once Grissom's plane landed in San Francisco, he gets up from his seat, grabbed his carry-on, then followed the line of people out of the plane and into the airport, where he scanned the waiting area until he saw who he was looking for.

Their eyes met a moment later, and like when they first met, the world around them just disappeared while their hearts raced.

Finally, they started walking towards one another, then stopped when they were close to one another, neither one sure how to proceed while in front of people.

Then Grissom shook his head with a smile, cupped her cheek, which made her smile, before he brought her to him and kissed her, and instead of it being a short peck like kiss, it was passionate, neither one caring where they were, but still kept it respectable.

After they pulled back, they place their foreheads together and he whispered. "I've missed you."

She sniffled. "I've missed you too."

The three weeks apart was almost torture for the both of them, it was actually more torture than the previous three months they were apart, knowing that they are now in an official relationship and not living on 'someday' anymore.

When they finally pulled back, he asked. "How are you? How is the baby?"

Sara beamed as she took his hand. "We are both good, well despite missing you like crazy."

He nodded with a smile before smirking. "So, what she 'told' you that?"

Sara raised an eyebrow. "She? Is this your way of hoping you wish it's a girl?"

He cleared his throat before replying softly and sincerely. "For the record, I would love a son just as much as a daughter. But yeah, I'm kind of hoping we'll have a daughter, a beautiful little girl who looks just like her mother."

Sara shyly smiled before speaking with a smirk. "Ok smooth talker, let's get out of here before I really get us in trouble."

He just chuckled, and instead of slipping her hand out of his, she held it tighter as they headed out of the airport and to her vehicle hand in hand.

As they were getting closer to the apartment she shared with Quinn and Ashley, Sara felt a nervous shift in the air, so she looked over at him and asked. "What's wrong? Why are you suddenly so nervous?"

Grissom spoke in a tone like it should have been obvious. "You mean besides the fact I'm meeting your friends formally for the first time?" She was about to speak, but he continued before she could. "Meeting your friends, especially really good/best ones, is up there to meeting one's parents, or in some cases more important. And considering how we met and the uh situation I put you in, yeah I'm a little fearful on what kind of reception I'll get."

Sara tried not to laugh at his obvious worry, but she did a little as she moved one of her hands to his and squeezed it while she spoke. "Ok first of all, last time I checked you weren't the only one there to put me in this so called 'situation', and secondly." She then smirked. "If you think about it, it's their fault we even met in the first place, especially the 'how' we met."

Grissom chuckled with a nod. "That is true." He then moved her hand to his lips and kissed it before looking over at her with nothing but love, even though he hadn't said those words to her yet. "Then I need to find a way to thank them, because challenging you that bet was the best decision they ever made."

Sara smiled shyly at the compliment, then she cleared her throat before replying. "Well, I think I know a way to thank them and win them over."

As Sara pulled the vehicle in her assigned parking spot, Grissom asked with a raised eyebrow. "And that would be?"

"While I may have kept, for the most part, our encounters to myself, I did tell them about your cooking, and they sounded very intrigued by it. Now you don't have to, considering you are our guest, but..."

Grissom cuts her off with a smile. "Hey, if it will put me in their good graces, it's done. Just tell me what they like, and we can go to the store later, if it's ok with you?"

She nodded with a smile while she leaned over the middle console. "And I wouldn't say no to a Gil Grissom dinner."

His second smile gets cut off when their lips touched, this time it was a little more passionate than the one they shared at the airport, but they still kept it respectable since they were in a place where people could see/watch.

A few minutes later they ended their kiss with a few pecks before pulling back, then they smiled brightly at one another before she spoke. "Alright, let's get you inside so you can be bombarded with many questions, I hope you're ready."

He took a breath before speaking softly. "I guess as ready as I'll ever be."

Sara just chuckled as they get out of the vehicle so they could go inside the apartment.

Later that evening

Once the girls, including Jo who was in town to visit Sara and a few family members, met Grissom, which wasn't as bad as Grissom had imagined so he felt a little more at ease, eventually it was dinner time, and considering how much they all ate, Grissom would call that a success.

They were finishing up dinner, laughing and having a good time, when Ashley looked at her watch then looked at Quinn, saying they have to leave for a double date with their boyfriends, who also happened to be best friends themselves.

So, two of the girls thanked Grissom for dinner before getting up and leaving.

A moment later Jo mentioned she was meeting a cousin, so she also said goodbye and left, leaving Sara and Grissom alone in the apartment.

Grissom then looked at Sara and asked. "Was it something I said? I thought dinner was a success?"

Sara nodded with a smile. "Oh, it was very much a success, I don't think I have ever seen them eat so much before, and it wasn't anything you've done or said, believe me. They made sure they had plans tonight, so this wasn't them just trying to get away so we can be alone." She then smirked. "But I mean, even if they were, would that be such a bad thing?"

Grissom was quick to reassure her as he cupped her cheek. "Absolutely not."

They lean towards one another and softly kiss, then after they pulled back, he moves to get up, taking the dishes with him, so she asked. "What are you doing?"

"Uh, dishes."

She shook her head as she stood up with a smile, taking the dishes he had in his hand. "It's ok, I'll do them, you go sit and relax, you haven't really relaxed since you've been here."

"You sure?"

"Yes, go watch a documentary or something."

He smiled with a nod before kissing her cheek, then headed for the living room while Sara went to the kitchen to start on the dishes.

The documentary about bees kept Grissom occupied for only about ten minutes before he turns the TV off and heads to the kitchen to see Sara closing the dishwasher and pressing the buttons to start it, so he smiled as he walked up to her, then slipped his arms around her waist and placed a soft kiss on her cheek.

She smiled as she closed her eyes, loving this feeling of being in his arms, especially after three weeks of not being in them, then she turned around and wrapped her arms around his neck and spoke softly. "Thank you for dinner."

"You're welcome."

They just looked into each other's eyes as they moved closer to one another until their lips touched, softly at first before it became passionate, and since they were alone, there was no holding back now, they poured everything they could into that kiss, even though it was only three weeks from the last time they saw one another, it felt a lot longer.

When they finally pulled back, she grabbed his hand and led him to her bedroom without any words.

Once they were in the room and the door was closed, they were quick to go back to kissing while buttons and zippers were being undone and pulled down, and by the time they reached the end of the bed, which he was now sitting on, Grissom had nothing on but his boxers while Sara was still in her shirt and panties.

For the last 10 minutes Grissom was seeing a confident Sara, she was the one in control, but now that she was standing there with only a shirt and panties on, she became a little shy, so Grissom, understanding her now hesitance, took her hand and brought her closer with a smile. "You will still be the most beautiful woman in the world to me."

She took a breath and shook her head as she moved so she was now sitting in his lap facing him. "I'm sorr..."

He shook his head as he cupped her cheek. "Nothing to be sorry about. And if you don't want..."

She cuts him off. "Oh, I so want to." She took a breath and placed her forehead to his and whispered like she did when they met at the airport. "I've missed you."

With his eyes closed, he whispered in return. "I've missed you too." They pull back a second later and he shook his head. "And not just because of..."

She cuts him off with a smile as she cupped his cheek. "I know, me too. I can't believe it's only been three weeks."

"Yeah, it feels a lot longer than that."

"So, let's not wait any longer."

Seeing she was back to her confidant side, they started to smile as they lean towards one another and started kissing again, then with her legs wrapped around his waist, he picked her up and turned them around so they were now on the bed up near the headboard, she lays down and he moves his fingers to the buttons of her shirt, but watched her for a moment and waited until she nodded her head with a smile, giving him the ok.

He smiled in return while he unbuttoned her shirt, and once her stomach was finally reveled, he took a breath seeing the slightly bigger baby bump than he saw weeks ago. He then leaned down and kissed her stomach before moving up her body until he reached her lips, gave her a little kiss first before whispering. "Yep, I was right, still the most beautiful woman in the world to me."

The next time they kissed, which was a moment later, it was just them in a world of their own.

Next evening

Grissom was sitting at the end of the bed, looking down at the newest sonogram picture.

Sara had a doctor's appointment today, which was the main reason Grissom came for the visit, so this was the first one he got to be a part of, which he got see their little on the screen and hear its little heartbeat for the first time, and he never felt so emotional before. He also made a silent promise right there and then that there wasn't anything he wouldn't do for either of them. He already felt they were his whole world before today, but after today, it only solidified it for him, they were both his family no matter where life took them.

His moment alone was interrupted when he heard Sara's voice at the doorway. "Hey, you ok?"

He cleared his throat and looked up, nodding his head before looking down at the picture again. "I just can't stop looking at our little one."

She nodded with a smile as she walked towards the bed so she could sit down next to him. "I know how you feel. When I got my first picture, which yeah, you could barely tell there was anything there, I still couldn't look away."

He just nodded, then he took a breath and looked at her with emotion. "Sara, I know I've said this before, but I'm here for you, you are not alone in this. Anytime you need me, you call, ok? I don't care for whatever reason, I'll be here. I just need you to really believe that I'm not going anywhere...well you know what I mean."

She nodded, now starting to feel emotional. "I do, and I really believe it. I mean I did after the first time I told you I was pregnant and you said that. But after today, seeing how you looked when you heard our little one's heartbeat for the first time, I really believe it now."

He cupped her cheek to wipe a few tears off and he started to speak. "Sara, I..."

But then he stops and shook his head as he slowly removes his hand and goes back to looking at the picture, until Sara took his hand and whispered. "I love you, Grissom." When he looks at her quickly with wide eyes, she smiled. "That's what you were going say, wasn't it? That you loved me?"

He nodded, then cleared his throat. "I just didn't want to scare you away by already professing my love for you. Things are already moving really fast."

She chuckled before she took a breath and squeezed his hand. "Oh, don't I know that, believe me, I do. And honestly, I'm scared about everything that's going on since our eyes met that night. But I know I never felt more alive, or loved since I met you, and I don't want to hide it or pretend that I don't feel that way until the 'right' time it is acceptable to say, it just feels like a waste of time to me."

He shook his head with a smile. "Me neither, and you're right, it is." He then cleared his throat and took her hand. "So, in that case, I do love you, Sara. I have never loved anyone as much as I love you."

There was so much more that he wanted to tell her, like, that despite the speed of how this was going between them, he didn't want to get on that plane to go back to Vegas tomorrow. But he didn't say anything, he swallowed that deep desire down and hoped that his dream of them being in the same place will become a reality one day.

End of flashback

Once they came back to the present, she shook her head with a frown. "If that's how you truly felt, then how come you never said anything about moving in together? I mean even if you didn't want to say anything that night because things were already moving too fast, you could have said something in the following years."

He sighed sadly as he looked out in the horizon again. "Don't get me wrong, I've always believed how you felt for me, I never questioned it. But, I guess a part of me, that little insecure part that I could never really shake away while we were 'apart', was waiting for the other shoe to drop. That maybe you'll finally realize that you made a mistake on getting involved with me, that maybe you would/could find someone better for you and Belle, like that Sam guy you worked with."

Sam Wilson was a co-worker of Sara's, who actually ended up being the one showing her the ropes for the first three years if her career as a CSI, until he transferred to Los Angeles two years ago, and while Grissom knew nothing ever happened between them, that insecure part was just waiting for the day where she would ditch him for the younger, more athletic/fit guy.

Sara gasped with sadness that he actually had that thought in his head the whole time, so she squeezed his hand, then cupped his cheek with her free hand so she could bring his face back to hers before speaking with emotion. "Ok, first of all, Sam was only a co-worker and friend, you know that, right? Nothing romantic ever came close to happening."

He nodded immediately "I know that. I trust you explicitly."

She nodded with a smile, seeing the truth, then she finished with emotion. "Secondly, you are Belle's father and that will never change. The bond that you two share is unbreakable, and she would never find a better man to call father than you, and thirdly there is also no better man for me than you. You had me the moment our eyes met that night, and that kiss just all but sealed it for me. If I'm being completely honest here, I knew when I left Vegas that weekend, there wasn't going to be anyone else, even if I hadn't gotten pregnant. You're 'it' for me, you were back then, you are now and will be forever."

He felt it more than ever, but he still had to ask. "You sure?"

Her eyes beamed as she brings him closer to her. "Oh babe, 100%, so if you're really ready to make the move, then I am too. I'm ready to move forward with our lives together in one place."

He nodded with a smile. "I am more than ready. I love you so much, Sara."

"I love you too."

They kiss a moment later, then one thing led to another, and before they knew it they were laying on a blanket on the floor in the living room, not having the patience to take the time to go to the bedroom.

As they were laying in each other's arms with only a blanket covering them, they had been speaking about what was next for them, like who would be the one moving, then after a short pause, Sara changed the subject as she moved her thumb up and down his bare chest. "Hey Griss, do you think that if I hadn't gotten pregnant, that us meeting on that 'someday' we talked about would have been now? Do you think you would've still have accepted to do the seminar even though you had no other reason to come to San Francisco, unless of course you could find the time to visit your mom?"

While he ran his hand up and down her bare shoulder, he nodded. "You know what, I believe so. I've always loved teaching, and if the opportunity still came to me, then I couldn't see myself not accepting. I guess my question to you is, would you have come to the seminar? Would you have still been a CSI?"

She paused for a moment before nodding. "I think so, what little I knew about what you did when we first met, I did find it intriguing, so I think I would have stuck with it without more of your influence. As for me going to the seminar, if I knew you were the one conducting it, the answer to that would be a hell yeah." She made sure the blanket was secure before she moved off of him then she looked down and continued. "And you remember what I said that morning after our first time, what would happen the next time we met?"

No hesitation, remembering everything that happened between them that weekend, he replied. "That I better be prepared to spend the rest of my life with you because you weren't going to let me go a second time."

"Yep, and it still would have been true."

He smiled as he moved his hand to cup her cheek. "I'm so glad we didn't have to go through that though, of being alone the last six years until we met again."

"Me too. I know our situation wasn't exactly easy on any of us, but I'll take the last six years on how we were over never seeing each other again until now." As he nodded, she continued with tears in her eyes. "I just can't imagine not..."

He cuts her off with comfort. "You don't have to. And in a few months, I'll be here to stay and I'm never leaving without you or Belle again."

As much as they wanted to move in right away, Sara knew Grissom needed to give the lab notice so they could find a replacement, so they both knew it was going to take time for them to actually start that part of their lives together. But least that and their feelings were talked about, so they felt better about it now, even though it will still suck playing the waiting game. However, they also felt it would be well worth it in the end.

"That sounds like a dream come true."

"For me too."

Grissom moved up so they could share a few kisses, then after they pulled back, she asked. "And you're sure that you moving to San Francisco is the move you want to make?"

"Yes. Our daughter goes to school there, she has good friends, and you love the people you work with, I'm not going to take any of that away from either of you."

She frowned a little, knowing he will be the one changing his surroundings and the people he worked with. "But I'll be taking you away from the people you..."

He cuts her off with a smile. "It's ok, I'll be fine." She was going to speak but he continued reassuring her before she could. "Yes, I'll miss Jim, and Catherine, she's been a loyal friend and one of the best coworkers I ever had the last seven years. And I guess a part of me does wish I could see Nick's and Warrick's skills develop to the highest potential I believe they have. But, at the end of the day, nothing, and I mean nothing, will ever beat sharing a life with you and Belle, I'll take that over anything. I don't care what lab I walk into as long as I finally get to see my two favorite girls for more than a few days to a couple of weeks."

Sara nodded with a smile, believing his words that he was alright with the move. "Ok."

He nodded with a smile. "Ok? So, this is really happening?"

She nodded one more time with a wider smile. "Yeah, it's really happening."

They lean towards one another again to kiss, and she was about to deepen it, but he pulls back, which causes her to ask with a raised eyebrow. "What?"

"Talking about the night we first saw one another got me thinking about something, something I'm surprised I hadn't asked yet."

She wrapped her arms around his neck as she asked. "And that is what exactly?"

"What kind of meal did you get with that sixty bucks?"

"Oh, I uh, I got nothing."

He raised an eyebrow as he asked in surprise. "What do mean you got nothing? You did get the money, right?"

"Well, I uh, I actually declined it."

Now his eyes get wide. "What? Why would you do that?"

She took a breath as she tried to explain it to him. "It's just after the kiss, I actually felt wrong taking the money. Like I would have cheapened it or something, despite the reason why I went to you in the first place."

He then smirked. "Which I think we both know it wasn't only about the money, your friends gave you a challenge and I know how much you hate to fail, so you had to prove them wrong that you would actually do it."

She chuckled with a nod. "You know me so well." He chuckled in return, then she continued while moving one of her hands to his cheek to cup it as she whispered. "And going through with the bet was the best decision of my life. Hell, it even changed my life in a way I couldn't have imagined. I'm with a man who is everything I could have hoped for and more, who gave me a child that I love more than anything, more than I thought I could. If someone would have told me I would have this life before I was thirty, I would have given them directions to the nearest mental hospital. This wasn't supposed to happen to me."

He cupped her cheek and ran a thumb up and down it as he whispered. "You deserve every bit of this, all the happiness in the world."

She ran her thumb up and down his cheek. "And so do you."

He took a breath as he finished. "This wasn't supposed to happen for me either, I thought I was destined to be alone. But then this young, amazing, beautiful woman walked up to me, and the moment our eyes met I was a goner. I knew my life would never be the same again, especially after that kiss. I'm yours Sara, I was back then, I am now and will be forever."

They smiled as they leaned towards one another and kissed again, this time there was no stopping them for a second time that night.
