Rachel laid in the hospital bed. Even though there were doctors and nurses bustling around her, she'd never felt more alone in her life.
The doctors had given her strong painkillers. Whilst they took the physical pain away, nothing could numb or get rid of the emotional pain she felt.
She had watched as a doctor had performed an ultrasound of her uterus. They'd diagnosed an infection, which was the partial cause of the excruciating physical pain she had been experiencing.
There was no baby anymore, as they'd all suspected. Still, it didn't stop Rachel's heart throbbing with pain when he'd broken the news to her. She knew it already, but a doctor confirming it just made it real.
The baby hadn't been 'viable' as the doctor had called it. A miscarriage could have happened at any time during the pregnancy. It explained why she'd had all the symptoms of pregnancy, but had received a negative pregnancy test, although the doctors couldn't explain the positive test she'd had earlier, not that it mattered anymore. Knowing there was nothing she could have done wasn't a comfort to her.
The doctor finally left, having hooked her up to an IV. She was left with a nurse, who was caring, but didn't understand what she was currently feeling. Rachel envied her.
"How about I go and fetch your husband for you?" The nurse asked
She wanted to roll her eyes. No one seemed to listen in this place. Eddie wasn't her husband. But she was too tired to argue or correct her. She nodded simply.
The nurse smiled kindly before leaving the room.
