After mourning for a while, Hellboy stood up from his crouched position. It's been so long since he's properly mourned. He had already moved on from his father's death. Although while unexpected, his death didn't hurt as much as Liz's did. He had seen a future with her. A future where they had a home that was not in the BPRD and kids. Loads of kids. But now, he had to think of a different future. The kind that Liz couldn't give him. He was perplexed at the thought that Liz had chosen Angel for him.
What did that really mean?
He stepped forward to Liz's stone and pressed a kiss to his fingers and pressed on the stone. While he didn't get all the answers he wanted in such a short time, something did feel a little better…like a weight had lifted from his shoulders. He didn't realize how much guilt he had harbored over her death.
"Thanks Liz," Hellboy spoke out into the air, knowing she would hear him.
A little breeze rose and tickled his face. He took that to mean Liz had answered him somehow. Maybe now he can do something about his feelings for Angel. He turned and left Liz behind…finally.
He didn't realize how long he had been gone for when he got back to the BPRD. When he came into the secret building, he noticed there had been a shift change. He looked down at his watch and realized he had been gone for more than two hours.
Damn…
His thoughts swirled at the idea that he had left Angel behind for far too long, even though he had left her in the care of Abe. He needed to be there to ensure she's alright. He hoped she was still sleeping and had no clue he had left. He headed towards the direction of his room, but then heard his name.
"Hellboy!"
He stopped and turned to see Manning walking towards him. He groaned. As much as he liked Manning a little better now, he still didn't want to talk to him.
"Manning," Hellboy said as he crossed his arms.
Manning approached him, his face unreadable. "Hellboy, we need to talk. Come to my office."
"I was about to head back to Angel-"
"I know," Manning said as he raised his hand to stop him. "It concerns her."
That was a little too ominous for Hellboy, so he nodded and followed Manning to his office. Once they entered, Manning shut the door behind them. Hellboy stayed standing as Manning went to sit down at his desk.
"We've got a problem," Manning said once he settled into his chair.
"With Angel?"
Manning shook his head, "No. Angel's fine. Even though she hasn't been here that long, she's fine. I didn't mean to make it sound like she's the problem."
"Then what's going on?" Hellboy sighed with annoyance. Manning had the bad habit of not getting direct to the point.
"It's more about Agent Kit."
Hellboy bristled at his name. What this Kit had done to Angel really pissed him off.
"Tell me you fired him?" Hellboy asked. Manning shook his head and Hellboy became more frustrated. He sat down in one of Manning's chairs in front of the desk.
"Why the hell not? He disobeyed your orders!"
Manning nodded in agreement, "Yes, he did. Unfortunately, I could not fire him as the higher ups seem to agree that he had the right to disregard my orders."
"What right? He's a lower-level agent."
"Apparently, his father intervened. It seems as if his father is one of the higher ups and agreed that his son made the right decision."
Hellboy was stunned. He leaned back in the chair. It creaked under his weight and Manning winced, hoping it wouldn't break.
"Angel didn't do anything to deserve the treatment she got," Hellboy said.
"No, she did not," Manning said. "At this point, it no longer matters who did or didn't do what. What matters is that he is still employed here. Fortunately, I managed to convince them to allow for a three-day suspension."
"Three days?!" Hellboy exclaimed.
"That is the only thing I was able to get so be grateful for that. I'm going to try to see if I can do a transfer for him just as I did for Agent Myers if you remember," Manning said.
"Yeah, I remember," Hellboy muttered. He might have been a little too hasty about requesting Agent John Myers to be transferred after Liz's death. He might have a little regret about it, but he was not going to admit to it. "Will you at least make sure he is nowhere near Angel?"
"I can't guarantee it. He seems to have some intense animosity towards Angel for some reason. I will inform agents to be aware and to intervene if necessary. I'm sorry I can't do more," Manning said.
Hellboy sighed, "Okay. I'm not happy about it. I'll let Abe know."
Manning gave him a nod and Hellboy stood up. He headed to the door but stopped before he opened it. He turned to the other man.
"Hey."
Manning looked up.
"Thanks," Hellboy said.
Manning gave him a smile, "Welcome."
Hellboy opened the door and closed it after he stepped out. He sighed.
What else could go wrong?
He was pissed. Angel may have a target on her back now. He walked to his room. He did note that there were a few more agents than normal milling around his room. Manning already made do on his promise. He opened his door as quietly as he could, hoping Angel was still sleeping. He stepped in just as Abe stood up from his chair. He closed his door and turned. Angel wasn't in his bed.
"She just woke up," Abe said as he met Hellboy halfway. "She's in the bathroom right now."
Hellboy nodded, "Okay. We may have a problem."
Abe cocked his head, "Oh?"
Hellboy looked over Abe's shoulder and spotted the bathroom door open a crack. He let out the smallest of grins and gestured Abe to the door, further away from the bathroom, where Angel couldn't hear.
Hellboy explained everything that transpired in Manning's office with a whisper. Abe nodded.
"I see," Abe spoke in a whisper. "I suppose that means we'll have to keep an bigger eye on her then. Will you be telling her?"
Hellboy hesitated.
"Red…" Abe warned him. "You've already seen what happens if you keep something from Angel."
"Yeah, yeah, yeah," Hellboy said. "I'll tell her."
"Good," Abe turned and opened the door to leave. Hellboy closed it behind Abe. He turned around and spotted the bathroom door now fully shut. He knew she tried to eavesdrop on their conversation. He walked over to it and knocked on the door.
