Privet drive was dark. Unnaturaly dark. As matter of fact the only light were that of the moon. On a low garden wall sat an old tall man, with long white hair and a silvery beard, tucked into his waistband. Next to him sat a middleaged woman with a tight bun and square glasses.

Although the man had explained the reasoning behind his plans, she couldn't help but feel that he was holding out on her.

With a pop, a third person appeared at the far end of the street and started to silently make his way toward the two. She tensed up, and could feel the man next to her do the same.

"Expecting anyone, Albus?" she asked quietly.

"Certainly Minerva, although he's a lot larger. Louder too, I expect." He stood, playing with his wand almost in thought, but Minerva sensed he was ready to use it without delay if the need arose. She followed his lead. "I'm sure you've heard the news by now. If you came to fight, I urge you to reconsider," Dumbledore said, louder now, looking towards the stranger.

"I have no such intentions Albus. I'm here to talk," said Sirius Black, as he stepped out of the shadows.

"Expeliarmus!" Minerva shouted, forgetting where she were. The nerve of Black showing up here, after betraying the Potters to the Dark Lord! To her surprise, no wand flew at her ready hand, she had simply knocked him over.

"Said that I came to talk," Black said, getting up.

"How dare you..." Minerva started, though she stopped when she felt Dumbledore's hand on her wand arm.

"Why, Sirius?" Dumbledore asked quietly.

"I know what it looks like, but I'm not and never have been a follower of Voldemort," he said, getting up. "I assume you think me the spy?"

"It's well known within the Order that you were the Potter's secret keeper," Dumbledore replied.

"Exactly. You suspected that there was a spy all along. Which is why James decided keep the secret keeper a secret."

"I don't follow," Minerva said, frowning.

"Don't you see! The spy would have told Voldemort that I was the secret keeper, as everyone thought, and Voldemort would have come after me, while the real secret keeper went into hiding!"

"Ah," Dumbledore said, "yet, the Potters lay dead, and you're standing here, which means the secret keeper must have been the spy. Is there any way you can prove these claims, Sirius?"

"Do you trust me to take my wand out?"

"Do so with caution, Sirius, I will not have you try to escape."

Sirius took out his wand and, to Minerva's astonishment, although it immediatly made sense, it was the easiest way to prove his innocence after all, Sirius began to recite an unbreakable vow.

"I swear on my magic and my life, that I was not the Potter's secret keeper. I swear on my magic and my life that I am not, nor have ever been or will ever be, a supporter of Lord Voldemort. I swear on my magic and my life that I did not betray James and Lily, or their secret keeper to Voldemort or anyone who would relay the message to Voldemort." His wand glowed and the magic swirled around him. Three seperate oaths. That means that if even one of his claims were false, he would die or lose his magic right there. Nothing happened.

"Remus or Peter?" Dumbledore asked, simply.

"I suspected Remus was the spy. I can't believe it, but I did. James would not hear it of any of his friends, but I convinced him to make Pettigrew the secret keeper and tell Remus it was me. I believe he did it only to prove me wrong." Sirius's hands were shaking now.

"Where is he now?"

"I don't know. Lily wrote me to tell me Peter was having a hard time. I went to visit him, but his hideout had been cleared out. No sign of a struggle, though. I immediatly went to Godric's Hollow, but it had been to late..." His voiced died away. It was clear he couldn't bring himself to say any more. After a while he continued, "I had half a mind to track Peter down and kill him, like the rat he is. Still do, actually."

"No Sirius, you did the right thing. The truth sets us free." Dumbledore said in a comforting, grandfatherly tone.

"Hagrid will be here any minute now. I gave him my bike."

"You what?! He'll wake the whole street! What where you thinking?" Minerva sputtered. She couldn't believe Black.

"It has disguises similar to that of the Knights bus, muggles can't see or hear it," Sirius replied. Then he turned to Dumbledore. "I understand why you ordered Hagrid to bring him here. After all, I was suspect number one. I am, however, Harry's godfather." He left the unasked question hanging. Dumbledore remained silent for a while.

"I'm afraid, Sirius, that it's more complex than that. Lily made a sacrifice that gives Harry the ultimate protection, as long as he resides with people that shares her blood."

"Surely I can protect Harry better than any muggles! What about a Fidelius charm?"

"Do I need to remind you of the shortcomings of that particular spell? After all, Sirius, there is your work to be considered," Dumbledore gave Black a meaningful look that Minerva couldn't decipher, although some realisation seemed to dawn on Black. "I am looking for someone, though, to keep an eye on Harry. He would be much better off growing up without fame or fandom. Watch Harry for me, connect with him, teach him what he needs to learn. If the time is right, tell him about magic, and Hogwarts, but don't tell him anything that would way him down. Do we have an understanding?"

"Yes, Albus." Black answered.

Sirius walked into his study. He had waited until Hagrid had brought Harry. It was an emotional goodbye, and he felt the strain. He was tired.

When he sat down he saw the notification from the Office that magically appeared on his desk whenever they needed him for something. The envelope simply said 'Department of Mysteries' in bold lettering. He opened it. Inside was the usual short briefing, with a magical photograph.

Sirius smiled. He was going to enjoy this one.
