In the heart of Chicago, the city's bustling energy hummed through the streets as Matt Casey and Sylvie Brett strolled hand in hand through a neighborhood grocery store. Sylvie, her baby bump was showing now. She had a craving for the most peculiar combination of foods: pickles and ice cream.
"Are you sure you want pickles and ice cream?" Matt teased, placing a tub of ice cream into their cart.
Sylvie chuckled, her radiant smile lighting up the store. "Yes, Matt, I promise this is what I want right now. Pregnancy cravings are mysterious things."
As they continued their shopping adventure, navigating the maze of grocery aisles, a familiar voice caught Matt's attention. He turned to see a woman with blonde hair, and his eyes widened in surprise.
"Sylvie, hold on a second," Matt said, squeezing her hand gently. "I think I just saw my sister, Christie."
Sylvie followed his gaze and saw the woman approaching. Christie was Matt's older sister, who he hasn't seen since before he left for Portland.
"Matt, really? What are the odds?" Sylvie whispered, her eyes filled with amazement.
Christie noticed Matt standing with a woman who she hadn't met before and hurried over. "Matt! What are you doing here?" she exclaimed, embracing her brother.
"We're just grocery shopping," Matt replied, still slightly stunned by the unexpected encounter.
Christie's eyes fell on Sylvie first, she was going to introduce herself before she noticed her baby bump, and her face lit up with excitement. "Oh my goodness, is this what I think it is?"
Sylvie nodded, her heart warmed by Christie's enthusiasm. "Yes, Christie. I'm pregnant."
Christie squealed with delight and hugged Sylvie tightly. "That's amazing news! I'm going to be an aunt!"
"In 5 months you will be."
Christie looked at her brother and said,
"Why didn't you tell me?"
Matt sighed
"We just got back together. I didn't know until I came back this last time."
As they continued chatting, Christie couldn't help but inquire about Sylvie's cravings. Sylvie laughed and showed her the pickles and ice cream in their cart. Christie raised an eyebrow but grinned, understanding the quirks of pregnancy cravings.
The three of them continued shopping together, catching up on each other's lives and sharing stories and laughter. It felt like a rare and precious moment of connection in the midst of their busy lives in the bustling city of Chicago.
After they finished shopping, they walked together to the checkout counter. Matt, Sylvie, and Christie couldn't stop smiling, knowing that this unexpected encounter had brought them closer as a family. As they leave the grocery store, Christie invites them over for dinner next week. They accepted and they told her they would be in contact when they had time to.
When they arrive back at the apartment, they put the groceries away and then they decided to have a lazy day which consists of a marathon of Property Brothers and a boat load of ice cream.
For lunch, they decided to order in and once the food arrived, they began to eat.
"Matt?"
He looked over at her and sat his food down.
"What is it?"
After Sylvie told Christie there was only 5 more months to go, she started to freak out inside. How were they supposed to get everything done in 5 months? Babies acquire a lot of stuff. Diapers, wipes, a crib, clothes, etc.
"What are we going to do?"
"What do you mean?"
"In 5 more months we'll be parents and the apartment only has one room and…"
"Sylvie."
She stops rambling and looks at him, "what?"
"The baby will be sleeping in our room right?"
Sylvie nods
"Before I had to move away, I told Severide that I was planning on looking for a place. I knew they needed their space but you know how he is. He doesn't like change."
Matt thought of what to do with his uncle Jake's watch. At first he didn't think he felt right selling it. It was given to him by his first love. He held onto it for 50 years.
"How about this? When the baby gets a bit bigger, we look for a place together. Make it our own. Maybe a few extra bedrooms for when we have guests over and whatever you want."
"Really? Can we afford it?"
This is where Matt tells Sylvie about the watch.
"Remember when I told you my uncle Jake died and he left me and Christie something?"
Sylvie nods slightly and Matt continues.
"Well turns out it was a watch. It was given to him by his first love. He held onto it for 50 years."
"Okay?" She said confused, not knowing where this was going
"I took the watch to have it priced. The store owner said it was worth $80 thousand dollars."
When Matt said how much the watch was worth, Sylvie about had a heart attack.
"Oh my god."
"So how about it? We get a new place."
Sylvie shakes her head and says,
"Matt, no. Only if you let me put in some money. I don't expect you to pay for it all."
"Copy that."
Matt couldn't believe it. He's finally got what he's wanted for so long. He smiled and kissed her senseless.
"As for the baby, let me handle it."
"Alright."
With that, she smiled at him and they continued to finish eating and watching the marathon of Property Brothers.
After the lazy day and making love that night, Matt was watching Sylvie sleep. He moved the covers down so he could see her bump where their baby was safely tucked inside. He thought nothing could get better than this.
He got an idea and grabbed his phone to send a text to Stella
"Need your help with something."
A few minutes later, his phone dings indicating an incoming text.
"What is it?"
"How about you girls (Stella, Emily, Olivia, Chloe, and Violet) plan Sylvie a baby shower?"
"Way ahead of you. I'm with Foster and Olivia right now."
Matt smiles and sends a quick reply and goes to sleep for the night.
Next up: They find out what they're having and baby shower!
