A few days after Eris came home from the hospital, things were going back to normal. Bruce went back to Gotham with most of his boys after demanding she call at least twice a week and let him know immediately if she had any more 'episodes'. Two weeks later, Dick and Damian left. They had decided to ride out the rest of their stay, not wanting to leave sooner than they needed to.
It was hard to convince Dick that he didn't need to stay here. He was needed in Gotham just like the others, but he seemed to think otherwise.
Eris could understand his worry. She could understand all of their worries. What happened to her not only freaked her out, but it terrified everyone else as well. And they still didn't know what happened to her exactly.
Her boys hadn't let her out of their sights. Jordan was as clingy as ever, never straying from her side for long, which made having alone time with Clark pretty hard.
Clark had been more protective than ever, and Jon was constantly doing anything he could for her. Carrying things, opening doors, helping to cook, and clean. It warmed her heart how much they all loved her. Painting the house was easy with Dick and Damian staying longer.
As they sat down for dinner one night, the boys were grilling their dad about his powers, wanting to know more about them.
"Wait, so you can hear every sound in the world at once?" Jon's eyes grew huge, his fork inches from his mouth.
Clark chuckled sheepishly. "Well, it's more like I hear all of the fluctuations taking place in the collective sonic frequency."
Jon and Jordan exchanged a confused look and Eris giggled. She placed a hand on Clark's arm, rubbing softly as she smiled at him.
His gaze drifted over to hers, and he smiled lovingly.
"Honey, those words are too big to understand. I don't think any of us understood that one." She teased and relished in the soft blush that flushed across his cheeks.
"A-ah. Right." He stuttered and rubbed at the back of his head in embarrassment.
Jordan's head tilted in curiosity. "So… how do you tell between, like, someone calling for help or someone calling a taxi?"
Clark was loving this. Eris knew he had been worried about how the boys would react to his powers, and he was eating this attention up.
"It took years of training at the fortress. It's where I learned how to control most of my powers, like honing in on people in distress." Clark said as he pointed his fork towards Jordan. "One day, you might need to learn as well if your hearing comes in."
Jordan grinned and Jon bounced in his seat, wanting to know more.
"What's the most inappropriate thing you've heard?" Jon's mouth was spread wide as he gazed intently as his father.
Clark immediately shook his head. "Nope."
"Oh, come on?" Jon groaned and sat back in his seat; arms crossed as he pouted.
Eris frowned and chucked a corn kernel at her son. "Woah, hey. Not appropriate, young man." She scolded.
Jordan perked up as he tentatively spoke. "What about your crazy laser eyes?"
It was Clark's turn to pout. "Hey now. Let's just stick to calling it heat vision, alright?"
Jon giggled. "Yeah, Jordan. Heat vision sounds waaaay cooler than crazy laser eyes." His laughter was infectious. Jordan began giggling followed by Eris.
As the laughter tempered off Clark spoke up once more. He stood up as he brought his empty plate to the sink. He was always the first one done. Eris' cooking was phenomenal.
"But." He waited to gain the twins full attention as he stepped around the table, placing one hand on the back of Eris's chair and one on an empty one he had vacated as he leaned forward. "Every power comes with its own burdens." He spoke, and Jordan nodded, firmly, soaking up the info.
"And Responsibilities." Eris added and Clark nodded as he sent his wife a small smile.
"And Responsibilities. Jordan, as you begin to gain more powers, there will be rules set to protect both yourself and others. We cannot stress this enough. These powers are not for fun. They are dangerous." Clark said as he locked eyes with Jordan.
Jordan looked away and down at his plate. "I know. Don't use my powers outside of training, and don't draw attention to myself." He whispered.
Clark gave a firm nod. "Our identities must stay hidden. For everyone's safety. For your mom and Jon's safety." At the mention of his brother and mother, determination flickered across Jordan's face, and he locked heated eyes to his father. He gave his dad a nod.
Clark smiled. "Good. We do not want to draw any unnecessary attention to our family. If anyone found out about me, they could put two and two together about you and Jon possibly having powers as well. It would change everything."
Eris quickly cut in as she saw Jon open his mouth to protest. "It's not that we think the two of you will go telling everyone. We trust you. Both of you." She said as she gazed between her two boys.
Clark gave a nod in agreement. "My point is that both of you need to be mindful of your actions in public and around others outside of the family."
Eris reached across the table and placed a hand over each of her son's hands. "Even the smallest things can raise suspicion."
The boys looked down at their plates, deep in thought and Clark sighed.
"Look." He smiled in reassurance when they both looked back up at him. "From a young age, my father was very strict. At the time, it seemed unfair. But I understand now why he was the way he was. He wanted me to live a normal life. That's all I want for you two. To live normal, happy childhoods."
Tears filled the boy's eyes and they both leapt out of their chairs and bolted around the table to tackle their father in a hug. Clark's eyes closed and he wrapped them both in his arms as he tugged their small bodies as close as he could.
"I want you boys to be careful. I can't always be there for you and that terrifies me." He whispered as he pressed a kiss to each of their temples.
Eris watched the three of them, tears filling her eyes at the sight. She got up slowly and came to stand beside Clark, hand coming to rest against his shoulder.
She let out a startled yelp as she too was tugged into the hug. Eris snuggled close, sandwiched between each of her sons and her husband's chest.
Eris smiled in relief as she watched her boys dart around the park. Lana had mentioned this park to her a few days ago via text. Eris had wanted a place she could take the boys where they could let off some steam.
She smiled happily and opened up her laptop to continue work on her next book. Taking a quick look at her battery life, she had over four hours left before she'd need to plug it in.
Jon's voice raising made her look up and she nearly cried out as she watched a bigger boy shove Jordan into the sand box.
She set her laptop aside and rushed over to her boys. "Hey!" She called out and the strange boy looked up in shock.
She let out a gasp as Jon shoved the boy away. "Get away from us!"
Eris grabbed her son around the waist and dragged him away before pointing an angry finger at the boy antagonizing her sons.
"It is not okay to push anyone! You could have hurt him!" She scolded. She looked back and down at Jordan, who was sniffling and rubbing excessively at his eyes.
Her own eyes widened in both shock and fear as she spotted his eyes begining to glow.
She acted fast, rushing forward and sliding on her knees as she fell to his side. Her hands clamped over his eyes, keeping them closed and out of view. Crap.
She could hear when the other boy's mom arrived. She berated her son and began worrying for Jordan as well as the woman knelt beside Eris.
"Is he alright? I rushed over as soon as I saw." Eris turned angry eyes towards the woman but she softened up when she had noticed how large and currently pregnant the woman was.
Ah. Eris nearly flushed in embarrassment. She was about to reprimand a heavily pregnant woman for taking so long when Eris had arrived so much sooner on the scene.
"He just got some sand in his eyes." She tried to reassure the woman.
The woman's eyes widened, and she went to stand up, struggling to do so.
A hand darted out and helped the woman up before she could continue to struggle.
Clark knelt beside his wife; eyes wide as he gazed at his son.
"Clark." She whispered. "His heat vision."
Clark's expression hardened and he gave a firm nod before lifting his son up. "Bury your face in my shoulder. If it becomes too hard to contain, let it go. It won't hurt me." He spoke softly into his son's ear as he began walking to his wife's Camaro.
Eris quickly accepted the woman's apology as she picked Jon up with some effort and rushed after her husband. She snatched her laptop from the bench where she had left it.
Clark slid into the back seat with Jordan and Jon slid into the passenger seat while Eris got in and started the engine. She handed the laptop to Jon to hold.
"Where you listening in on us?" Jon asked as he peered around the seat, eyes wide as he watched his father console his brother.
"I don't listen all the time. Just here and there. Sometimes I hear one of your voices and can't help but listen in." Clark said as he rubbed his hand up and down Jordan's back.
Jon glared. "You spy on us?"
Clark's eyes widened. "Only when I want to check in on you guys. I worry all the time when I am not with you."
Jon turned around to face the front, arms crossed, and he seethed silently.
Eris shot a look of worry into the rear-view mirror, meeting Clark's eyes.
Eris came into the living room with a bottle of red wine for Clark and a bottle of sparkling grape juice for herself curled into the crook of her arm while her other hand curled around two wine glasses.
She sat down on the couch, snuggling in close to Clark as she began pouring them both their desired drinks.
"Have you spoken to the boys about what happened earlier?" She asked softly as she handed the glass over, her fingers brushing against his as he accepted it.
She set the bottle on the floor beside them before pouring her own.
"Nope." Clark sighed heavily as he took a sip. "Well, Jordan kept asking about when the vision would come in officially, but I don't have an answer. Jon won't even open his door to me."
Eris smiled sadly, feeling for her husband.
"Do you remember the first time I caught you listening in on me?" Eris asked and grinned when Clark let out a heavy breath as he let his head drop.
"How could I forget?" He said softly as he shifted his gaze to hers as she looked up at him. "I thought I was going to lose you forever."
Eris looked down sadly at the reminder. "You almost did, for a brief moment. I was just so angry. But I knew I wouldn't have been able to leave."
Clark's arm came around her and tugged her closer. She slid onto his lap easily and let her head rest against the crook of his neck and shoulder.
"Pretty sure I spent about a week's salary on flowers and sprite just to get you to talk to me again." Clark said as he pouted, trying to lighten the mood again.
Eris giggled. "I'm pretty sure it was two and you got off easy because I was still so madly in love with you." She said as she began trailing kisses up his neck before nuzzling against the side of his head.
Clark gave a soft hum and his nose skimmed up her cheek to press a kiss to her temple.
He smiled against her skin and tightened his arm as she snuggled back into his warmth.
She raised her glass with both hands and took a sip.
Clark leaned back into the couch and sighed.
"Any suggestions on how to get Jon to talk to me again?" He asked quietly.
Eris gave a hum as she thought about it. "Just… make him the same promise you made me."
Eris pulled back, set her drink down on the coffee table before taking Clark's from his fingers. He raised a brow in question as Eris turned in his lap to face him fully.
She cupped his jaw and leaned forward to kiss him, her lips locking easily with his.
He let out a pleased breath of surprise, one of his large hands came to rest at her waist as he tugged her firmly against him. He leaned forward and his other hand slid behind her head as he leaned in to devour her mouth with his.
It didn't take Clark long to earn Jon's forgiveness. He was back to being his bubbly self the next day.
Eris set the last box down in the apartment and she took a look around. "Wow, Lois. You found a nice place here."
Lois set her box down as well and smiled. "Thank you! Oh! And guess what? A woman came into the Gazette yesterday to talk about Morgan Edge. She wants to do an interview. She thinks he might be the reason behind her son's death. He worked in the Mines under Edge in New Carthage before his untimely death."
Eris grinned. "That's great! If you can get proof, then it might be enough for the edge proposal to not get passed."
Lois gave a firm nod. "It is just the nudge we were looking for."
Eris bit her lip as she gazed down at Jordan, who had his arms raised in front of his chest as he looked up at her with wide, puppy dog eyes.
"You… want to go to school and join soccer with your brother?" She asked for clarification.
Jordan nodded frantically, curls bouncing around wildly.
"You think you can handle it? We've tried before and you hated it." Jordan frowned.
"I want to be like all the other kids. Or, as much as I can be with these powers slowly coming in. Besides, Jon will be there with me. Please mom!" Jordan pleaded; fingers interlocked as he gazed up at her.
A slow smile spread across her lips. She placed a hand upon his shoulder and looked down at her watch. "School isn't out yet. Shall we go have a talk with the principal? Hmm? See if you can start next week. Maybe talk to the coach during practice today to see about joining soccer."
Jordan let out a 'woop!', hands shooting above his head as he rushed out of her office.
"Jordan, wait for me!" She laughed as she chased after her son, locking her office behind her.
"Alice! I'm leaving for the day! Have to go talk to the school! I'll be back later to close up." She called out to her shift lead who gave her a thumbs up.
After a phone call with Clark and a promise from Jordan that he would tell them immediately if he wanted out, it was easy getting Jordan into school.
She stood on the sidelines of the field as she watched her boys have fun. The coach had been nice and had given Jordan a uniform and everything. Today would be a trial practice for Jordan. To see if he even liked the sport.
Her job today, with some heated and desperate words from Clark, was to keep an eye on Jordan. Too see if playing sports would be too much with his powers. They didn't want him doing anything that made it obvious that he was much stronger than the normal child.
She looked at her phone as she received a call from her sister.
She answered it and listened.
"Yeah, I'll be there after practice. I did promise I'd help you out with this Edge thing. I'll have Clark pick the boys up from the diner and let him spend some time with them. Maybe they can celebrate together."
She felt a smile cover her lips as she watched her boys have fun with the rest of the team.
Eris entered the Gazette with a smile, spotting Lois as she talked to her boss.
"But you hired me to write this kind of story!" She said just as a loud crash and a car alarm went off.
Eris spun around and rushed back outside, Lois and Chrissy right behind her.
Eris let out a cry as she gazed at the blazing fire. "My baby!" She cried as she rushed closer. Her Camaro was on fire. She fell to her knees in shock.
Lois was at her side instantly, hands on her shoulders.
She sat on the curb, head resting on her hands as she listened to the firefighters try to put out her car. Lois and Chrissy sat on either side of her.
Footsteps approaching had her looking up through teary eyes. She felt ridiculous for crying over a car. But that was the first real gift she had received from Bruce. She loved that car.
"I'm sorry about your car, Eris." Kyle said as he came to a stop in front of them. Eris looked up and gave a sad smile as she wiped at her eyes.
"Morgan Edge was behind this, Kyle." Lois said. She had been livid the whole time. She knew why this happened.
"Woah, hold on. You shouldn't go around making baseless accusations like that." He said as he shook his head in disappointment.
Lois frowned. "It's not baseless. We had just gotten done talking to a source about him."
Kyle rolled his eyes and Chrissy leaned forward. "We still haven't verified those claims." She spoke softly.
Kyle took a deep breath and turned to walk away, not wanting to get into this again.
Eris stood out on the porch. This spot was quickly becoming a favorite spot of hers.
She heard the screen door open and looked down with a smile as she felt her husband's presence behind her.
His hand came around and she smiled as she spotted the canned soda he was holding. Sprite.
"Thought you could use this." He spoke quietly before he pressed a quick kiss to her temple. He came to rest at her side, arm pressed against hers as he raised a glass of wine to his lips.
"We've been here for a little over a month, and someone has already tried to blow up my car." She pouted and he chuckled.
"This whole Morgan Edge thing is pretty serious." She whispered. "If this deal goes through, what else could he ruin?" She questioned before leaning back and chugging half of her can of delicious liquid silver.
A large hand rubbed at her shoulder, trying to relieve some of her tension.
"He killed Barricade, Clark. He can't get away with that." She pouted. "Not to mention it was an obvious threat towards Lois."
Clark nodded to himself. "Well, I bet Bruce would buy you a new one, no questions asked. But we should probably call him and let him know what happened."
Eris let out a loud groan and let her head thump down against the railing. "He's going to want to drop everything and rush over here."
Clark chuckled. "Yup!" He popped the P.
Eris straightened up again and playfully slapped his arm. "Oh, hush." She giggled before glancing over her shoulder towards the porches window, where a vase of assorted flowers sat.
She turned to face him and brought her hand to rest over his heart. "I love you." She whispered and his answering smile made her giddy.
"Still?" He whispered out as he leaned forward, and she giggled.
"Thank you for the flowers." She whispered as her answer before leaning up for a kiss.
The next night, Eris watched from a few feet away as Clark worked on cleaning out the barn some more. He had the pipes that had fallen on their boys last month in a pile by his side.
She watched as he lifted one up with little effort and crushed it down, from one end to the other, as if it were an aluminum can.
"God, that is so hot." Eris teased as she made herself known, though she would bet money he knew she was there already. Him and his super senses after all.
He physically startled and she frowned in worry.
"Hey, what's wrong?" She asked softly as she stepped closer. It was rare for her to be able to sneak up on him.
Clark heaved a sigh, his shoulders slumping. "I'm worried about Jordan playing Soccer."
Eris's gaze softened. "He knows to hold back and come to us if his powers come to be too much. And yesterday he seemed fine when he was at practice. He blended in with all of the other kids." She said as she reached out for Clark's hands and began to play with his fingers.
Clark's brow rose as he noticed Eris' outfit.
"Are you going somewhere?"
Eris' eyes widened. Oh! She had completely forgotten the whole reason she had come out here.
"Oh! Yes. Lois called. Apparently three other employees from New Carthage had also gone missing and were unaccounted for. She's going to meet with her source and didn't want to go alone. So, I told her I would join her. Is that alright?" She asked with a frown and Clark quickly shook his head.
"No, no. It's probably better that she doesn't go alone. Especially right now." Clark tried to reassure her.
She smiled. "Great. We're gonna meet her in New Carthage right now, so I am going to have to borrow your truck." She grinned, pressed a kiss to his cheek and began walking toward the red monstrosity.
"Are you going to bring it back!?" He called after her, lips wide and eyes sparkling as he teased her.
She spun around and sent him a wink. "50/50."
As she got into the truck, Clark could only shake his head fondly with a chuckle as he turned to get back to work.
Eris and Lois pulled up to a shady looking motel. As they stepped out of the truck, Lois looked at her notes to see which room they needed.
Lois froze and began to look around as she paused in front of room 2. Eris frowned. The door looked like it had been kicked in at the handle, the wood splintered and broken in an arch around the handle.
"Maybe we should call Clark." Eris glanced around, anxiety coursing through her veins.
Lois ignored her and grabbed the door handle and pushed the door open. Eris bit her lip and began to wring her hands together as she watched the handle wobble in place.
She followed after her sister as she stepped inside. The room had been trashed.
Eris looked around in horror. "Lois." She whispered as she grabbed onto her sister's arm.
"Sharon?" Lois called out, voice echoing in the room. She took a cautious step forward, dragging her sister with her.
Lois stepped up to the little box tv and shut it off to stop the noise. Eris paused in the middle of the room and Lois began to explore. She crossed her arms and looked around anxiously.
Eris let out a cry in alarm as a man stepped into the door frame leading to the bathroom. Lois spun around and she made a beeline for the exit, grabbing Eris by the arm as she went.
The man was right behind them. He slammed the door shut with one hand and grabbed Lois by the back of her shirt. He slammed her into the door and Eris cried out in fear as she watched her sister fall to the ground and didn't move.
The man grabbed Eris next. Slamming her as well before tossing her onto the ground before the bed.
Eris scrambled up and looked back as the man approached slowly, as if he were stalking his prey.
Eris reached forward and grabbed a pen from the table just as the man grabbed her once again, dragging her towards him by her ankle.
She panted and cried out in fear as he rolled her onto her back and his hands began to grab her arms. He lifted her easily onto her feet and she let out a sob as she swung her arm and stabbed him with the pen, right into his ear.
Her eyes widened as he let out a grunt and ripped the pen out with a glare.
He tossed her to the side, and she rolled into the wall near the exit and her sister. She stood up on shaking legs and reached into her back pocket for the ELT.
The man let out a growl as he cupped his ear in pain. She panted for breath as she struggled to stand.
She flipped the ELT open and held it up as she faced the man head on.
"Oh, that won't help you." The man said with a sick grin as he continued to stare a hole right through her, gaze drifting down her form.
That's when she noticed he had ripped her shirt, exposing her black laced bra.
She widened her stance, trying to look tough even as the tears fell down her cheeks. She wished she were braver like her sister. Instead, she was the sobbing crybaby.
"No." She panted as she pressed the button. "But he always will." She said between clenched teeth, hair falling into her face as she pressed down on the button.
The man let a confused frown flutter across his face, and he took one threatening step forward, calling her on a bluff. Eris nearly sagged in relief as Clark burst through the Motel's wall, slamming into the man and knocking him back, his body slamming into the opposite wall.
Eris covered her face as plaster and bricks rained through the air.
She looked up between her arms and sighed in relief. Thank God.
Clark was seething. The man stood up and they stood there for a moment as they assessed one another. The man had at least half a foot on Clark height wise, which shocked her. Clark was pretty tall, standing at six feet. This man had to have been at least six-six or six-seven.
Clark attacked first, throwing a punch at him only for the man to catch his fist and shove him back.
Eris watched with wide eyes as Clark and the man fought it put on nearly equal terms in both strength and speed. This guy had powers!?
Eris winced in sympathy as Clark headbutt the man and delivered multiple quick hits to his stomach before landing one on the guy's jaw.
Clark nearly gaped as the man's head flung to the side only for him to turn slowly back to face Clark, snapping his jaw back into place.
Eris cried out as she watched the man attack her husband, landing hit after hit before tossing him into the wall beside her.
She cried out as Lois darted past her and rushed into the bathroom. She could hear her sister talking to Sharon, but she could take her eyes away from Clark as he took hit after hit without being able to fight back in between each. She fell back against the wall, resting against it as she watched the horrific scene play out.
"No!" She sobbed as the man delivered punch after punch to her husband's face. With one last punch, Clark fell still, eyes closed as he lay face down.
Eris' eyes widened as the man turned to her once more.
She let her body slide down the wall as he took long strides toward her.
"Ah… Superman! Get up! Please!? Oh god!" Her eyes widened as the man reached for her. She could hear her sister shouting Sharon's name in the background.
Just as his fingers skimmed the base of her throat, she spotted her husband rise up behind the man's shoulder, floating in the air. The man turned and stepped toward the threat as Clark used his ice breath, freezing the man in place before he delivered an uppercut to the man's jaw.
She let out a breath she hadn't known she had been holding as she watched her husband fight before ending it by picking the man up by the back of his jacket and tossing him out the hole Clark had created in his arrival.
He gazed down at her for a moment and at her nod, went to Lois in the bathroom before stopping back out with Sharon in his arms. "He's gone. Call the cops and get out of here." He shot her one last worried look before taking off.
Eris collapsed completely, body sagging as she started to sob silently, her arms coming up to hold her shirt closed.
Eris sat in the hospital bed staring down at her lap.
She wasn't too seriously hurt. Mostly just some bruises. Which was odd to her. She was tossed around quite a lot. But it felt like that man had held back unlike he did with Lois. She was knocked out and had a concussion.
As the doctor stepped into her room, she looked up and gave a small smile as he flipped through his clipboard.
"Good evening, Mrs. Kent. I just want to check on your pregnancy, make sure the baby is all right before we release you." His words sent ice down her spine.
Her eyes widened in shock. "Pregnancy?" She whispered and the man's brow furrowed as he looked up.
"You didn't know?" He asked softly.
She shook her head. "She made me pee in a cup, but I was told it was just procedure."
The doctor looked down at the chart and began flipping through it.
"That damned nurse. This is the fifth mistake tonight. I am sorry, Mrs. Kent. She didn't note the test, just the pregnancy. My first thought was that you had known and wanted to see if the baby was alright after you were assaulted." He apologized.
She opened her lips, hands raised to wave his apology off. It wasn't his fault after all. The sound of glass shattering cut through the air. Both she and the doctor turned, spotting Clark standing before them, eyes wide and mouth open in shock. A vase with flowers shattered at his feet.
"Oh." Clark whispered out.
