So here is where Jonathan really begins to realize that not only does he care for Enna but that he can't go back to being a criminal, something in him has changed and that he needs to choose a new path to follow.
At first Jonathan was a bit taken aback by the question "Y-Your Father..." He said as he felt his cheeks become hot and he rubbed the back of his head "...That...Is quite the question..." He thought a little bit about the past Enna had lived and from all that he knew so far he had come the close to acting like an actual parent out of all the adults (And all the adults Enna had known before were humans, even if the Turtles were technically the age that could be considered legal adults, they still very clearly were still also in the teenager state of mind and they were clearly more like 'Older Sibling' figures than parents)
"Did...Did you ever call any of the scientists Mother or Father?" Jonathan asked
"Not since we were old enough to think coherently." Enna said by that she meant beyond baby or toddler age, "There were always like a dozen scientists at any given time, and they were careful to keep changing places so they wouldn't bond to any particular mutant I don't think I remembered any of their names, we were all to call them 'Doctor' or something like that."
Jonathan winced about how he he had told her to refer to him as 'Professor' his thoughts were racing a mile a minute, so many emotions...So many possibilities stretching out before him...And then suddenly...The path before him was clear.
"All right." He said softly "If it pleases you you may call me Father..." He knelt back down "...I never thought I would ever want a child, but I have come to see the error of my ways."
And with that he kissed her on the cheek.
"Good night Enna." He said "I'll be in the bunk above your's so if you need anything..."
"Thanks..." Enna said smiling that big otter smile "...I really appriciate that...If I can smell you it's as good as being able to see you."
Jonathan chuckled "There is something to be said..." As he got up "...About how other creatures percieve the world differently from humans, and now with...Talking animals now in the world we humans now learn from the animals themselves how their perceptions work."
Jonathan took off his gloves, his shoes, his shirt, he left on only his pants as all this adventure had left him incredibly warm and he wanted to cool off.
He climbed into the upper bunk, as he lay down, he didn't immediately fall asleep, instead he thought about the fact that he had just kissed Enna's cheek without thinking when before he had never been so physically affectionate he was downright disdainful of touching for the most part! But since he had woken up from the mind trap Enna had put him in, something was different and he knew it.
He thought about the fact that in the mind trap he had been in the body of his elementery school age self, 'It's almost as if I really did have a second childhood however brief...' Jonathan thought as he listened to Enna breathe beneath him '...I had never been a believer in that 'inner child' stuff wishy-washy pop psycholgy stuff that seemed to be birthed from the same ideas of spirituality as the Hippie movement...But perhaps in that moment I did reclaim something I had lost in childhood...He thought about those times as a child even though he still loved to scare people, a part of him still believed in the morels he read in his books and that he really did believe in goodness before his coming of age and certain life experiences that came with it further embittered him towards the human race...And now a creature who wasn't even a human being, but instead an animal who had the same mental an emotioanl capabilities as a human who had helped him regain his own humanity...Jonathan knew then and there he could never go back to being a criminal again...So what to do now? He thought about Enna...She may have also been a Mutant Animal like those Turtles...But they seemed to also be very different, she was a psychic which the Turtles weren't (At least the Turtles hadn't displayed any psychic abilities as far as he could see) And Enna's traumatic time in the lab might have some lingering effects he remembered her waking up screaming from a nightmare...As a Psycholigist who specilized in fear he knew he had the training to be able to soothe the fears in people not just cause them...The more he thought about it as he slowly began to fall asleep, the more he realized he couldn't just let Enna go, he had to stay with her, even if he couldn't live with her with the Turtles in the sewers he still had to be able to keep contact with her via the phone...
As everyone fell asleep as dawn started to break over the forest, Jonathan realized he really wanted to become her father...
So really just a follow up to the question asked at the end of last chapter, I was originally planning to have some of Riddler's thoughts after having his bullet removed by Borden but that can wait till next chapter
