Chapter 6

Link vs Lucifer Morningstar Part 1:

Fallen Angel

"COURAGE VERSUS EVIL. IS THERE ANY FIGHT THAT'S MORE APPROPRIATE THAN THIS? HUMANITY'S GREATEST HERO AGAINST THE GREATEST MONSTER. THE SECOND BOUT OF RAGNAROK STARTS NOW!"

None of the combatants moved when Heimdall started the second round of Ragnarok.

People in the audience remained quiet and no one dared break the silence, for fear their words would spell draw the fighter's attention away from the duel.

The ground of the arena had partly resurfaced, bringing the ruins with it, but there were holes left in the arena that presumably dropped straight to the fiery pits of hell.

On one side was Lucifer, the prince of Hell.

He had blond long hair, bronze tanned skin and long black wings stretched out behind his back. His eyes were like small fire pits. Burning fiercely and hungrily. He stared at Humanity's fighter with a veneer of arrogance.

Opposing him was Link from Hyrule. He was dressed in his standard green tunic. Blond hair swayed in front of his blue eyes. His eyes stared into Lucifer's with an unwavering determination.

"I see you're all alone," Lucifer said, the Devil's voice was surprisingly smooth for someone of his nature. He continued, "Your people are gone, not even in hell or heaven." He stared in disgust at the audience. "Now you're fighting for these sinners."

Link simply nodded.

"What does he mean?" Göll asked, she stared at the crowd.

"The Kingdom Link came from, Hyrule, is incredibly ancient, it is so ancient that even the sands of time have nearly erased it. The only reason I could even pull him into our time was his curse," Brunhilde replied with a sad voice. "He is the only one from his era left. There's no one to cheer him on but us, strangers."

If this bothered Link at all, then his expression didn't show it. Not a single trace of uncertainty or doubt was visible.

His courage bled into the audience. The humans started shouting encouragements.

"Slay the Devil!"

"You can do it!"

"Surely this monster won't stop you?!"

"Secure another victory for mankind!"

Link took another deep breath and focused on the opponent before him. Silently he categorized all his weapons and tools.

In his left hand he held the Master Sword and in the right wielded his trusty Hylian Shield. He had more items and sacred weapons, but he knew that the finishing blow had to be dealt with the Master Sword.

Link closed his eyes for a brief second.

Countless lives flashed before his mind's eye. The time he slayed Ganon with a strike into the heart under the light of the Twilight, the duel on the bottom of the ocean against the king, the duel against Demise and the fight against the Calamity.

The Master Sword would be key once again.

Link opened his eyes and waited for Lucifer to make a move. Lucifer in return did the same.

"Don't you need a Volundr?" Lucifer finally asked when neither of them continued to make a move.

Link opened his eyes and pointed his sword at Lucifer.

"I see."

"Where is his Volundr?" Göll asked concerned, she looked at the sword. "I don't detect any of our sisters."

"Normally yes," Brunhilde folded her arms, she couldn't help but to smirk. "But you see, the sword Link uses, the Master Sword. It isn't an ordinary sword, it is an ancient weapon that has a divine spirit inside it, and this weapon's special ability is to seal away evil."

"So you're saying…"

"Exactly," Brunhilde smirk grew impossibly smug, she stared at Zeus. "The gods made a mistake picking Lucifer, the most evil of all."

From across the arena Zeus answered her stare with a smirk.

Below, the clock of the battle kept ticking away.

Anxiously, Heimdall waited for the fight to begin.

It was the Hylian who made the real first move.

Link carefully strode forward, his gaze fixed on lucifer. With every step the sense of imminent danger grew and roared.

"It is humanity's hero who takes charge again," Heimdall's skin crawled. Every step Link took he could hear his heartbeat echo.

Everyone in the audience felt it. The air was getting charged with energy.

Lucifer watched Link advance but didn't make any move to stop him. He almost looked amused.

Step after step was taken. Link didn't take his eyes off Lucifer for a split second.

Then Link heard it. A sound so faint no one in the audience could have picked it up.

The ground underneath his feet rumbled.

Within a split second he jumped away. Immediately after the ground broke open and a pillar of fire exploded through the hole and reached all the way into the sky.

Flames scorched the edges of Link's tunic. He had barely dodged the fire.

"Humanity's Fighter was almost barbequed!" Heimdall screamed, he was trying to raise his voice above the roaring fire.

Just as quickly as it had appeared the fire disappeared, leaving only a tiny hole in the ground.

Link pitched his ears. The sound that preceded the flames appeared again and Link was forced to move.

This time the explosion nearly scorched his hair but he had dodged it nonetheless.

The smell of ozone spread through the arena like a plague. The sickening smell of hell.

"Fire summoned straight from hell! Lucifer is bringing his home to the skies!"

The ground continued to rumble. Multiple fires erupted around Link. Just in time he rolled out of the way, but it wasn't even a full second before the ground underneath his feet split open to spit out another flame from hell.

Link was quick on his feet, but a single mistake would result in his immediate demise.

Brunhilde bit her lip. If this keeps up, Link won't be even able to get close.

Link's expression didn't change as he was forced to run for his life. His gaze was hardened with determination. Each step he took caused another spear of fire to penetrate the earth and forced him to move. It had turned into a sinister game of whack a mole.

But the longer the fight kept going, the angel grew bored. He peeled his gaze away from Link and turned them skyward. A silent sigh was heaved.

"Is this humanity's end? Link has no other options to run! There's no time to think! No time to strike, Lucifer's onslaught of fire continues!"

Just as Heimdall finished his sentence Link skidded to a halt.

"WAIT, WHAT'S HAPPENING!"

Well, just like old times. Link thought as he let go of the Hylian shield and jumped onto it in one fluid motion.

A loud sound tore through the crowd.

The ground exploded, fire surged up into the heavens.

The audience gasped.

Gods leaned forward, humanity held their breath.

"PEOPLE…" Heimdall said, stunned by surprise. "I think Link just willingly exploded himself,"

"He's gone!" Göll gasped.

"Not exactly," Brunhilde smiled, "The Hylian shield is one of the ancient artifacts of his land, and it just happens to be extremely durable," the Valkyrie pointed one finger up. "He was send flying though,"

It was Lucifer who saw him first.

The angel's eyes widened slightly as high up in the sky there was a shining star crashing down. Except, it wasn't a star, it was-

Link, still surfing on his own shield, drew back an arrow from the Twilight bow. A fierce light appeared in heaven.

He released the string and the light came crashing down. A divine ray from above crashed down.

It struck Lucifer right in the shoulder and the angel dropped to his feet.

A barrage of arrows followed and Lucifer was showered by golden arrows. Each arrow hit like a truck and caused an explosion.

"Enough," Lucifer said. His wings furled around his body. The arrows got frozen in place for a split second, then he unfurled his wings and they were sent flying back at Link.

Link raised his shield during his fall, absorbing each of the shots.

"How will he get back?!" Göll pulled on Brunhilde's arm. The Valkyrie had no answer.

Link was still falling and the ground came closer. He reached into his satchel.

Moments before the moment Link was about to crash, a heavy weapon appeared in his hand.

A massive hammer made out of steel.

"IS THAT A HAMMER I AM SEEING?!" Heimdall stepped back. "Is Link going for a DOUBLE KO?!"

It wasn't just any hammer. It was the Megaton Hammer, a legendary artifact that once belonged to the Gorons. It was powerful enough to split the skull of a dragon. He himself had used it many times to crush foes far larger than him, and with how fast he was going…

He raised it above his head as the ground came closer. The hammer was charging with energy.

Brunhilde's eyes widened. Maybe, just maybe, it was enough to end the fight right here

"You fool." The black wings folded around Lucifer like a shield. The black feathers gleamed.

Then, the second the hammer connected with the wings, Link froze in place. It was as if time had stopped the moment the hit had landed. He was stuck in the air. Locked into place.

Lucifer was bleeding from his shoulder, yet he raised his head and looked at the hero. He stepped out of the way with a simple step. "Why would you risk it all with such a suicidal move?"

His wings flapped forward.

A blast of wind was generated at the tips by just the sheer power. Link was released from his stasis and thrown back to the ground.

Dust and sand was stirred up by only a single move of Lucifer's blackened wings. The entire area was blanketed in the orange haze as Link crashed through the ruins.

Lucifer turned his back away from where the Hero was launched, but an almost unnoticeable sound made him turn around.

Two objects were launched towards him.

"Humanity's hero still has tricks up his sleeves!" Heimdall watched as two things burst out of the mist.

A chain and a spinning tornado? Lucifer felt mocked.

He stepped to the side and the tornado whirled straight past him.

The chain with the claws at the end followed but he merely raised his hand to snatch it out of the air. The chain wrapped around his arms. The line was pulled tight and the sound of metal rattling came from the fog.

"Pfft, like a fish." Lucifer pulled on the string and from the mist Link came flying, retracting the chain from the hookshot. In his free hand Link held the Master Sword. The blade was glowing and aimed straight for the Devil's heart.

"Hiyya!" Link screamed.

Lucifer's wings slammed forward.

The gods barely dared to look.

Humanity clenched their hands.

One strike would end it all.

But before it could strike and kill the greatest monster, it had frozen in place.

"Nooo!" Brunhilde slammed down her fist on the railing.

"LINK CAME CLOSE BUT ONCE AGAIN THE ANGEL'S WINGS PROTECTED HIM!"

"The wings of an angel," Brunhilde cursed. "How does that monster still have his wings?"

Link grunted and tried to move but he was utterly helpless.

"It's over!" Göll murmured.

Frozen and helpless, there was no way Link could escape this situation.

The humans sighed.

"Did we really put our faith in some knight we have never heard of?"

"That's the Devil for you."

"I can't believe he can just do that! That is so unfair!"

"I don't get it," Lucifer said calmly, looking at Link who was again put in stasis. "Why bother fighting?"

No answer came from the hero. In fact, he didn't even look at the Devil, instead his eyes were focused on something else entirely

Lucifer noticed and turned around to see what distracted the hero so much.

Lucifer's eyes widened.

The tornado was spinning towards him, except-

"PEOPLE THAT IS NOT A TORNADO! THAT IS A BOOMERANG!"

It was the Gale Boomerang. The presence of the Fairy of the Winds inside it was faint, barely a flicker. Yet the Boomerang pulled through like it had done many times before.

The Gale boomerang was shining with light as it finished its wide arc and rampaged towards the two fighters. A storm had gathered around the projectile as it kept spinning.

The weapon collided with Lucifer and for a split second he was distracted.

That second was all Link needed. He swung his sword.

For a second there was a complete silence.

The gods were completely stunned. The humans couldn't believe their eyes.

Heimdall didn't dare to speak. He didn't want to announce what just happened because he still could not believe his own eyes.

The first one to make a sound was the Devil. And the sound was a scream of anguish.

A shrill sound that tore through muscle and bone. It ate away at the very essence of the soul.

Link took several steps back. He put away the boomerang and raised his shield.

Lucifer was clenching himself while howling in pain. It was a sound that was unnerving to the core.

Around the Devil a pool of blood had gathered.

In the middle of that pool lay a cut off wing.

The Devil cried in agony.
