First of all, I'd like to apologize for my English. It's not my obvious language, but I tried very hard to write this story. If anyone sees errors that I should correct, please tell me. Every comment is valuable to me. Thank you in advance!

Fanfiction "Gossip Girl". Blair Waldorf and Daniel Humphrey - the couple that was not supposed to happen and the couple that was supposed to be just a little "interlude" in the toxic relationship of "chair" and "derena". The couple that made the most sense in existence the entire series, a couple that all of us wish we had in real life.

The action takes place a year after the end of the series. All events took place. The story is a continuation of the series. The characters are not mine, they belong to the creators of the show. I only rely on them to create the next part that should appear.

It's 2019. Daniel Humphrey returns from Los Angeles to New York right after breaking up with Serena. Dan receives a job offer in his hometown, which he decides to take. He returns hoping to meet Blair Waldorf again.

CHAPTER 1. COMING HOME

Friday evening. Not everyone believes that Friday is the happiest day, but everyone agrees that Friday is the day you look forward to like the first star on Christmas Eve. Friday is the day that ends the so-called working week, and the next two days are supposed to be days of so-called " chill " from work and duties. For the kids, Friday was also a day of deliverance - for them it was an open door to freedom. Friday, although it is the last day of duties, theoretically it is not always. For women, it's a day where they check their closets to give themselves another excuse to go shopping at the malls on Saturday. Friday is also a day of visits and parties, because on Saturday you can sleep longer.

Friday was also the day when Daniel Humphrey stood at the threshold of his former loft in New York, where he lived until a few years ago. Just looking at the door brought back a lot of memories from his high school days, which was definitely a turning point in his life. The acquaintances and relationships he made forever left a mark on him. The relationships that got him to where he is now.

Standing in front of the loft, Dan briefly reviewed his life. He was in a five-year relationship with Serena before he decided to ask her to marry him. In recent years, she has been by his side, supporting him, understanding and, above all, like a friend to him. He married her in the hope that someday friendship would turn into love, or at least into habit. However, that was not the case. Their lives in Los Angeles did not end as he had planned. Although he was glad that Serena had made it in the city of angels. Probably many envied her work among the biggest stars of the dream factory. Serena, however, was destined for great things and for things that she made more beautiful. She fit into the world of Hollywood as if she had been born there, and Dan was happy for her. Even if he wasn't in it anymore.

Humphrey was still standing outside the loft, staring at the door. He had a mystical feeling that the dark eyes of a certain brunette were reflecting off him. She was everything he hated about the Upper East Side , but also everything that brought him here again. It was like the supernatural attraction of a magnet, though Humphrey thought it was only one-sided. However, this did not prevent her from dropping everything and returning to the place where it all really began. The look he'd been trying to find in Serena for the last six years was here in New York and it was called Blair Waldorf .

Dan took a deep breath, reached for the handle to open the door and crossed the threshold of the loft where he decided to live again. He was surprised that the loft was open, but that would soon be clear.

— Dan? — he heard a surprised voice behind him and maybe slightly nervous younger sister. — What are you doing here?

— I? What are you doing here? Dad said the loft is empty and I can…— He stopped suddenly when he saw a stranger behind his naked younger sister. — Ou ... I didn't mean to interrupt. — He added a bit embarrassed and turned around, covering his eyes with his hand.

— All right, nothing happened." This is Jacob. — She introduced her "friend" to her older brother. —Honey, just give us a minute, okay?"

— Dan. — Humphrey snapped at the blue-eyed blond. — Nice to meet you.

Embarrassed by the whole situation, Dan shook hands with the guy getting dressed, who disappeared from his sight after a while and went to Jenny's room. Could this situation be more pathetic? Dan was perplexed, and Jenny seemed pretty relaxed. For him, Jenny will always be his little sister, and he still hasn't gotten used to the idea that Jenny can have an adult life and an adult relationship. It was still an abstraction to him, and the feeling that he had to protect her from any guy who had "bad plans" for her. He tried not to show his emotions though. Although he was tense, he tried to fake a smile.

— What are you doing here? Shouldn't you be with Serena in Los Angeles? — She asked, already dressed, when they were alone.

— I got a tempting job offer. Here in one of the schools.

— Really? That's great! Will Serena join you?

— No… um …— he hesitated before telling his sister the truth, but was it a dream to hide it? Sooner or later, everyone would find out anyway. — We parted.

— Wait what? How did you break up? When?

— Some time ago. We have a hearing in a week and I will officially be divorced and free of obligations. — he tried to joke.

He figured he'd still have plenty of time to figure out what he was going to say to his family about his failed marriage. Jenny's presence in the loft surprised him a little, but on the other hand he was relieved that he could tell someone about it. He had occasional contact with Jenny. The distance between Los Angeles and New York was quite long. Besides, Jenny was busy designing a clothing line for Waldorf designs . Jenny had an impressive career, which probably no one expected a few years ago. The blonde, however, was quite stubborn and pursued her own. That's what made her successful. Dan was proud of his sister, but hoped that fame wouldn't take a toll on Jenny's life. He hoped that the younger sister still had the same values that Rufus had tried to pass on to them years ago. He hoped that pervasive corruption did not appear in her life.

— How can you be joking?" aren't you sorry? What actually happened? You seemed happy. At least on social media. — Jenny, as a fairly famous designer, was often active on social media like Instagram or Twitter . Unlike his brother, who kept social media to a minimum.

— You're stalking your brother on Instagram instead of calling him?" — he laughed. But they see the look on Jenny's face and decided to put the jokes aside and explain a bit more. — Serena and I have decided not to say anything officially due to the release of her film, which she is producing. Some in Hollywood believe that the news of our divorce could have negative effects. I agreed to it. — he explained everything. — That's why I'm asking you to be discreet too, Jenny.

— Sure. I know best how bad press can affect your work. — she smiled faintly. — You still haven't answered me. What happened that you are no longer together?

Dan sighed heavily. He didn't really know what to say to his little sister. It wasn't one of those sad-romantic or heartbreaking breakups. His and Serena's relationship was special. Dan respected Serena and was always there for her when she needed him. He was a friend to her and he wanted it to turn into something more. Time passed and his feelings did not change. There was no passion or passion in them. There was nothing but friendship.

It probably would have lasted a few more years, if not a lifetime, if not for an incident a few months ago. Serena was using Dan's old laptop when it spilled coffee on hers at work and was being repaired. She accidentally stumbled across a draft of Dan's second book, or rather a chapter he had given her when she was on a plane to Los Angeles. The chapter that was supposed to be about her. Exactly - he had. Serena wanted to read it again with a smile on her face. Reminisce and perhaps boost your ego. After reading the draft chapter, there was nothing resembling sadness on her face. There was only a grimace reminiscent of sadness. This chapter wasn't about her and was never meant to be about her. It was written for someone else.

Humphrey struggled to get out of the situation, but not because he'd been caught in a lie. He felt he had hurt Serena , which he didn't want more than anything in the world. The sad thing was, on the one hand, he felt relieved. Relief that she finally found out the truth. There were long nights and long days when they talked about it, trying to fix what really couldn't be fixed. It should not be taken for granted that they both tried and tried very hard to make it work. For Dan, it was much easier to love Serena than to forever look back at those dark brown eyes that had brought him nothing but doom. Eyes that never chose him and didn't even dare tell him.

Serena finally realized that she and Dan couldn't be more than friends. She accepted it and let him go. Throughout her time in Los Angeles with Dan, the blonde has changed a lot. She matured, grew up and, above all, did not put only her needs in the first place. It was hard to accept that, but it would be even harder to look at her husband every day and wonder if his eyes wanted to see someone else in her. Someone he will never be. She realized she couldn't have Dan Humphrey as her husband, but she doesn't want to lose Dan Humphrey friend.

It had been hard for Dan himself, too, but for the last few years he'd felt like he'd left things unsolved and unfinished in New York. On the one hand, he wanted to return, and on the other, he was afraid of it. He imagined his return in different ways. Each time with a happy ending. But now he was on his way to realizing that dream, and it was terrifying. It was no longer daydreaming, but reality. It was up to him which way it all would go. But did he have a right to expect a happy ending for himself? Above all, will he be able to say that one dream aloud?

— Dan? — Jenny repeated as she snapped Dan out of his memories back to reality. The brunette had the impression that the younger sister was trying to pierce him with a pattern to read anything from his face.

— Ouu .. It's just... It didn't have a chance, but we're still friends." It's OK.

He paused and, taking his luggage in his hands, went towards his old room. He hoped the little sister had finished her audition for today. He wanted to rest after the journey and not to dig up his failed marriage anymore. On the one hand, however, he felt relieved. Because someone already knew, but it will be a long time before Dan and Jenny talk to each other about everything again. The man was not sure whether the sister in the loft stayed permanently or only for a moment. But he didn't want to ask her today. Will do it tomorrow at the waffles. As long as Jacob doesn't make pancakes for her.

— Dan? — His sister's voice stopped him, and he turned on his heel towards her and tried to smile kindly. Jenny looked intrigued. — Can I ask you something else?

— Sure.

— Did you come back because of a job offer or for her?— when asking this question, of course, she meant the legendary in New York Queen B. At one time, Jenny and Blair had a tragic relationship. Now, however, everything looked completely different. How could it look bad? After all, they now work together and are successful. This relationship has definitely turned into something good that no one probably expected a few years ago.

— Because of work. This is a really great offer from Jenny. We'll talk tomorrow, okay? I'm tired and I'd like to rest.

He replied and spun on his heel again, hoping Jenny didn't see any emotion on his face. The blonde took a breath as if she wanted to say something else, but Dan ignored it and pretended that he didn't see anything. He wanted to disappear behind the door of his room as soon as possible. He had the impression that he said everything in one breath, as if he was learning a rhyme by heart. He wasn't sure who he was fooling at this point, himself or her.
