The world was born from the Chaos. Everyone knew that. From the smallest children to the oldest men, all knew that Eos had been born from Chaos… and Chaos, created the Gods to guard the Planet, protect it from all harm.

Therefore, the gods were almighty. The gods were forgiving and generous. The gods were righteous, they spoke the truth, the gods were Good… and all who defied their word were Evil.

In Eos there was no one who didn't know that… but humanity sometimes forgets… gods, also deceive…

Year 733 M.E. 2 years before the birth of the king of light.

The night sky was covered in thunderous clouds. The wind blew heartily through the empty streets. Every store was closed, every window had the covers drawn. There was no one in sight. Everyone remained in their homes, waiting for the storm to pass.

The wind blew strongly against the concrete and iron buildings, baskets of garbage and branches hit the walls, some left a dent, nothing but a scratch to the immensity of the city's buildings.

A pillar of light flashed among the clouds and a loud thunderous noise filled the streets, not long after, another flash pierced through the air and it hit the antenna of one of the buildings. The sound and tremble it created were uncanny and scary. But the storm didn't stop, it raged on, almost as if the great god of Lightning was angry at men.

Suddenly, in the midst of the storm a dead silent came to be…

The King that lay beside his lovely wife, moved from the bed and opened his eyes. He wasn't sure why he'd awaken, but there was something, some sort of calling that made him move from the bed and reach towards the window.

His wife, didn't move from her spot, which was odd considering how she always woke when he did…

He walked towards the window and opened the doors that led to the balcony. The King's eyes watched the night, there was no wind, no clouds, no storm. Just… a starry sky. His lips curled into an amazed smile as he glanced at the thousand stars before him.

He was so engrossed in them that when a shining golden star began descending towards him, he was shocked! But his shock quickly ceased when he realized it was but a small butterfly…

The insect flapped its golden wings and gently rested on top of the stone railing of his balcony.

He watched amazed as its wings flapped gently, he wondered for a moment and wondered why its wings shinned with soft glittering gold. He reached out for it, suddenly wanting to touch it, when a voice spoke in his head.

"I wouldn't do that if I were you."

"Who's there?!"

A bright light filled the balcony as a man clasped in armor appeared before him.

The King for a moment froze and as he regained his thoughts, he began to bow, the man stopped him. "Don't. I am not Bahumuth, I do not need reverence." The man approached the railing and reached his hand.

Slowly, softly the butterfly took flight and landed safely on his extended hand.

"Who are you?" The king asked confused.

"I am Odin."

"A god?"

"If you wish. I don't differ from the other six, we were created by the same Chaos, but given different tasks, mine is to watch the gates between the reality and the astral plane."

The king nodded in understanding and shifted where he stood, his eyes returning to the small insect in the god's hand. He was curious to why Odin told him to stop, but he didn't ask, instead he asked something else.

"What do you want from me, Lord Odin?"

The god tilted his head and leisurely raised his hand, a smile lingered in his lips as he showed him the butterfly.

"There are a few things I must tell you. First, in two years' time you will have a son." The King's eyes lit up with happiness and his lips curled into an excited smile. He opened his lips to ask more but Odin wasn't finished. "Second, your son will be the King of Light." And like that his heart plundered to his stomach, his newfound joy destroyed.

The king knew what that meant, he knew the responsibilities and sacrifices his unborn child would have to face.

"Third-"

"There's more!?" He exclaimed, shocked.

"Third, the Ariadust family still lives…"

A shiver ran down his back, every hair in his body rose. The King swallowed and clenched his shivering hands into fists. He knew the legends…

Just like everyone knew the world came from Chaos they all knew of the Ariadust, they had consumed monsters and defied the will of the gods, they were betrayers, heretics, those who turned their back on the gods and who were banished to the southern hemisphere as punishment.

The gods, in all their might, separated the two hemispheres using the great Rift, to keep those monsters away from Humanity.

He stumbled backwards until he reached the railing, he held it tightly, his hands gripping hard until they turned white.

The god watched him. Every move, every breath, every sweat and heartbeat. The normal reaction… he sighed and extended his hand again. The butterfly took flight, towards the King's direction.

As it did it changed, a strange mist appeared from nowhere like a curtain covering something, the form of a person appeared behind it, and reached towards the panicked King. Gently, it touched his cheek and a warmth filled him and he felt at peace… Slowly his eyes began to close, and the sensation spread all around him.

"Don't fear what you can't understand, don't hate what you don't know…" Odin spoke in his mind. "Remember this King of Lucis… Not all that the gods say is the truth." The god's voice sounded further and further away as he sank deeper into sleep. "If you wish to save your son, you should bear in mind, that everything must pay a price. Farewell, King Regis."

He opened his eyes and sat up.

"Dear? What's wrong?" The woman next to him shifted and placed a hand over his, worry etched in her eyes. "Did the storm wake you?"

His eyes landed on her and then on the window, where outside the wind and rain rattled against the glass. King Regis blinked confused, had that been just a dream? Odin, the Ariadust family, his son? He sighed and reached for his Queen, who still held him in her gaze, he smiled and kissed her forehead, gently. "I'm fine, it was just a silly dream."

She smiled, relieved she laid back down, snuggly, closely to her husband, her eyes closing as she sighed contently.

As the royal couple went back to sleep, they failed to see the small golden butterfly that remained on top of the clock on the corner of the room. The insect opened and closed its wings, pausing for a moment before it took flight again and disappeared without a trace…

In that moment the clock hit the first hour.

Year 738 M.E. 3 years after the birth of the king of light.

Her first memory was of a thousand flickering lights floating before her eyes…

Her second memory was of her mother and father. The curve of her lips, the shine and affection in her eyes, the tone of her voice and the softness of her touch. In contrast, her father hands were rough and calluses, but they held her so delicately like she was the most precious thing in the world, his itchy bearded face and roguish smile made her smile when he made silly expressions.

She didn't need words, to know these two loved her dearly… From the day she came to the world, she was showered in warmth… but that warmth didn't last…

She could still remember the warm liquid that fell on her face, the trembling hands that held her tightly, and the ruby eyes that stared into hers.

Monsters come out at night, they loom in the shadows…

The embrace that held her tightly grew cold as time passed. The shiver stopped and she could hear the slow beat of life coming to an end.

The monster that stood before her growled and readied to attack again. It knew she was there, so it attacked again. But as it attacked a ray of light erupted from the east, it shone on the monster causing blisters as it touched its skin. With a painful, horrifying scream it erupted into ash as daylight came to be.

The person that held her tightly shifted and fell to the ground. In the light of the new day she watched as tears fell from her and how her lips trembled. "L-ve…" her lips moved some more, but no sound came from them. That was the last thing her mother told her, before she died…

Her father didn't blame her as he held her tightly and cried in her shoulder. Even though it was her fault, that her mother was dead. If she hadn't left to see the floating lights… if she'd listened when her mother told her to run…

She clenched his shirt, fought the tears that risked falling and bit her lower lip.

If she hadn't been born, her mother would be alive.

From that day forward she didn't follow the floating lights anymore. She behaved and stayed within the walls of her house, only leaving when the sun was high.

So then… why? Why had it come to this?

Year ME 741 King Regis discovers that Noctis is the Chosen King

She looked at the man that stood before her. His cobalt blue eyes looked at her with such remorse and sadness… that even before he told her, she already knew what he came to tell her.

She didn't cry. How could she cry when it was her fault?

She reached for the man's cheek and caressed it, gently. "It's alright… so, don't cry."

He held her tiny hand in his and gave it a squeeze. Such a small child, the same age as Noctis, she'd lost her father and she was comforting him, the man that was to blame for that loss.

'Why is the world so cruel?'

He took her by the hand, he would bring her to Insomnia. As he brought her into his arms, the King looked into her golden eyes. "What's your name, sweet child?"

She blinked and looked into his eyes.

For a moment he froze, those eyes, like molten gold, he was certain he saw something being reflect in those eyes other than him… something he had seen years ago… in a dream…

"Selene…"

He blinked and shook his head when he looked back the shine was gone… "Sorry?"

"My name is Selene."

His lips curled upwards, and his gaze softened. "From now on, I'll take care of you Selene… Is that alright?"

Selene looked at him and Regis felt, once again that she was seeing something other than him, something more…

She'd refused to see them… when her mother died, she decided to shut those things from her life, and yet she could still see them… the floating lights… and Regis, the man who extended his hand, the King of Lucii, had some of those lights around him…

'This man… is different.' She thought as she gazed at the lights. They existed on the air, water, ground… She could see them in every human, animal, plant, but there were some who had more lights than others and Regis was one of those people.

He was gentle, caring, wise, strong… this person, had kindness in him. She was hesitant when she took his hand. Everyone she'd wanted to be with, they had disappeared…

He'd never imagined greeting his father and see another child in his embrace.

Noctis Lucis Caelum hesitated as he approached his father, his eyes on the child he carried.

"Father?"

Regis stared at his son and gave him a pained smile, he ruffled his hair and walked away. "We'll talk later Noctis…"

As watched him leave the young prince's eyes locked with the child that stared at him from his fathers' shoulder, she gave him a shy nod before her golden eyes closed and she went back to sleep.

As they turned the corner the young prince pouted and crossed his arms annoyed. Why was that kid with his father?

He sat at the chair and glared at the seat before him. It was the sixth time this week that his father hadn't joined him for a meal… people in the citadel were starting to speak, rumors were flowing from mouth to mouth… they said his father had a mistress, and that the child he'd brought with him was the one born from that affair… and that his father no longer loved him…

He clenched his hands above his knees and fought the tears from falling. It wasn't true! It was just a stupid rumor! His father would never abandon him!

Even though he knew that… he still hated that kid! For taking away the precious time he had with his father.

She pulled her knees to her chest and looked at the falling leaves in the garden, it's been a while since she came to the palace, the people who served her were kind, but she could see those eyes, the looks that told her they didn't want her there… only the butler and the maids that helped her change had a kind smile on their lips.

Selene buried her head in her knees and repressed the tears that threatened to fall. She wouldn't cry, she refused to cry! She had to be strong…

"Hey! You!"

She lifted her face and looked at him. His blue eyes glared at her, he had a stiff posture, his hands were rolled into fists as he took a decisive step her way.

She rose from the ground. She had to greet the crown prince, it was polite to do so. And as she rose from the ground, she felt two hands pushing her back. Selene fell, scrapping her hands and elbow, she glanced at the boy confused and then she saw them… the tears that flowed down his cheeks.

"You're stupid and dumb! And! And… Stop stealing my dad!" She could hear the jealousy, the envy and the irritation in his voice. She couldn't say a thing to him, not complain that he had pushed her, not get angry, she just remained quiet…

She ran, away from him, away from his sadness, she couldn't hear that, if she did… she would…

She fell, tripping on nothing and she couldn't help herself. She was crying.

At least, he had a father he could fight for… she no longer had that…
