She parked on the closest park she could find. She glanced at the area, it was quite desolate, and the next fuel stop was quite far away…
Selene removed her head gear and reached for her mask. Once she'd bonded it to her, she reached for her weapons, it was a rule to never go armed in meetings, so she placed them on her bike, taking only a small dagger with her. She followed the rules, but she wasn't stupid to the point of going un-armed…
Her gaze shifted back to the woods and with a sigh she entered. The sun was still up, so she had no worries over finding daemons, and the local fauna didn't bother her.
As she walked further towards the deeps of the forest, she began feeling uneasy. Perhaps it was her impression, but she had the feeling the forest was too quiet and… that she was being watched.
At the next enlistment of trees, Selene stared at the rock complex before her, if she was certain there was a King's grave around here, at least that's what Sirius said to her, her phone rang.
"Yes?" She heard the complaining voice on the other side and sighed, "I'm at the entrance now… yes, okay…" She turned off her phone and walked towards the cave.
The ground was moist, and she could hear droplets of water falling. 'Must be close to a water line…' The deeper she went in the worse her instincts got, usually in places like these there were Daemons lurking around but until now, she hadn't found anything. Not daemons or sign of any guardian…
'This is getting weird…' She reached for her phone, but she had no service down there. Selene frowned and stopped, for a moment she pondered going back. 'This is starting to feel like…' Then a loud noise scared her, the earth shook and all around her began to fall. She rushed further inside the cave, avoinding the falling debries, as she ran, suddenly, she felt and heard something change.
Selene stopped and looked to her feet, the ground was no longer rock and mud, it was metal, smooth man-made metal. Her eyes widened and her instincts kicked in. 'Shit!' She turned around, but it was too late… the door shut behind her, she was trapped.
Year ME 756, 18th of May, The Fall of Insomnia
She tried her best to recover he breath, the sweat flowed from her chin, mixed with her blood, from the wounds she had sustained.
'Damnit! Damnit!' Selene glared at the walls that held her, she should have known, she should have realized! She was so wrapped up in her own emotions that she had completely forgotten, she was in their way, a thorn in their plans…
A smirk appeared on her lips as she laughed at the irony, she never agreed with their methods, but she'd followed every order they'd given her, she thought she'd done all to perfection, thought she had been the perfect doll for them…
Selene squeezed the knife, it had grown slippery from the blood of the daemons she had slayed and of her own. She looked around. How long had she fought? How long had it been? Was the signing over? In that darkness, she had no ways of knowing if it was night or day.
She gritted her teeth and rose from the ground, her legs wobbly, she leaned against the cold metal for support. She glared at the entrance taking an uncertain step, she stumbled towards the door, her fists clashed with it, the sound resounding around her.
"LET ME OUT! FOR CHAOS'S SAKE YOU CAN'T DO THIS! HUNDREDS WILL DIE! YOU'RE GUARDIANS! LET. ME. OUT!" She banged her wrists into it, over and over again. The gloves that had adorned her hands had ripped during the fight, and yet even when they bleed, even as they the metal was died red, as she scratch at the door until her nails broke, she kept banging and shouting! "LET ME OUT!"
She had to save him! She had to save the King! Noctis… Noctis would, WILL be heartbroken if his father died, and she… she… Selene pressed her head against the metal.
"Please… I don't want to lose another parent…" The tears fell down her eyes, the memories were too much. She had to help them, she had to!
The grinding and cracking sound of a Daemon forming made her stop. The earie aura, formed around her, Selene glanced back, among the corpses of monsters and Daemons more Daemons seemed to form.
She stared at them without moving, her head leaning against the cool metal as she released a sigh. They kept popping out, no matter how many times she killed them they kept appearing. She turned to use the wall as a support, her eyes closing. Maybe, it was time to give up. Hadn't she done enough?
A soft shimmer seemed to pulse in the darkness, and in that deadly prison she could almost feel a breeze brushing against her skin, in it, she heard them… "Please… stay by his side…"
The hand that held her knife twitch and she gripped it strongly. Selene opened her eyes and moved to stand straight without the support of the wall. She wouldn't die, she refused to die!
She had made a promise!
He couldn't believe his eyes… it had to be a lie, it had to be a dream, a nightmare! His city, the place he grew up in was destroyed. His father, the man who he'd always aspired to be, the man he respected, the person who'd always done everything for him… was gone…
Noctis didn't know what to do… what? What should he do?
The smoke raised towards the heavens, the city laid in ruins. He fell to his knees, his heart ached, the rain felt like cold knifes that stabbed his skin, but before he knew it, the pain… was gone, nothing was left… "Dad…" He sobbed.
He walked the halls. Halls that had been built with the meticulous reason to show a King's value… Each column and adornment was designed with that in mind. He stopped before the painting of the First King Somnus and he frowned. His gazed turned back towards the destruction. Those once beautiful halls were now a scene of war… blood plastered the walls and floors, bodies laid in silence, never to rise again, certain structures had fallen and treasures of untold beauty and history laid shattered…
He looked at the opened wall that showed the outside. The city burned. Buildings had collapsed, lives had been taken and ruined… now, as the rain fell down on them, he could no longer hear the pleas and screams of the people nor the sounds of war…
Sirius turned his gaze towards the corridor ahead and walked towards the destroyed door. The throne room laid before him. He examined the arches, the columns, the gold leaves and the dark marble floor, and then he looked at the stairs that lead towards the throne. He took a deep breath and bowed his head, before walking towards the base of the stairs. "You have to bow in the throne room." He'd said to Selene once, he frowned...
He laid there, unconscious, or perhaps, he was ashamed… Sirius gripped his hands into fists as he looked at him. He moved towards him. "Come on, I need to get you a doctor."
He didn't look at him, as Sirius hoisted him up and dragged him through the halls.
"I thought… you had orders." Ravus asked without looking up, his arm was still bleeding and he felt tired.
"I do."
"Then why are you here?"
"Because all my friends are idiots." Sirius answered coldly. "But… they are still my friends, and I don't like loosing them…"
The commander said nothing as his aide dragged him along. Friendship, had never been something he thought was necessary, but the idiot who always annoyingly stuck with him, who played pranks on him, who forced him to connect with his sister, called him a friend… The image of himself, with Lunafreya, Selene and Sirius, all sitting at a table laughing and drinking appeared in his mind.
He never needed friends, he was happy if he could get his revenge… yet, why did that image and his words, make him regret the path he had chosen?
Sirius said nothing. He pretended not to see the lone tear that flowed down Ravus cheek, he simply dragged him along the corridors...
They waited for Cor at Hammerhead. He couldn't be calm, he didn't even know what to do, what to feel, what to think…? His kingdom, his dad, his home… what should he do now?
"Your Highness…" The Marshal came in with a gloom expression.
"You! Explain! Aren't you-, weren't you supposed to protect him?"
He looked at him, with the same expression before he looked around.
"Is…" His voice failed for a moment, and he breathed in. "Is Selene with you?"
"Selene?" Ignis blinked confused, as Noctis was still in an irrational mood. "She had a call, she left us yesterday.
"I see, I'll send a search party for her."
"Y-you don't think S-Selene had anything to do with this?" Prompto asked afraid.
"Don't be stupid!" Noctis lashed, surprising everyone. "She's not like that!"
"… His Highness is correct, there was a traitor among the Glaives…" Cor, explained. "While I fought him, he said she was going to die soon enough…"
"W-what?" He couldn't feel the ground beneath him. No, he'd lost his dad, if he lost her too, he… Noctis reached for his phone and dialed the second number he had on speed dial. The tone rang and rang… and when it answered he got voicemail. "N-no," He tried again, he had to get through to her.
"Are the Guardians part of this?" Cid asked as he looked at the Immortal.
"I don't know… but I'm guessing they had something to do with it."
"How is that possible!? They are supposed to protect the royal family! Not end it!" Gladiolus complained as he glared at Cor.
"We've been…" Cor sighed as he looked down. "Selene has been giving his majesty's intel, that proofed the Guardian's were corrupt."
"Corrupt?"
The old man stared at the kid prince, who wasn't listening in the conversation, his eyes and hands working on the phone as he tried to reach her, Cid sighed. "Selene is strong, she'll be fine."
"You don't know that!" He lashed out, surprising everyone.
"Calm down!" Gladio shouted.
"Calm down! How can I calm down? Everything is wrong! My dad, the Empire, Selene! Everything is a mess! How do you expect me to calm down!?"
Gladio glared at him and grabbed his shirt. "I'm telling you to calm down! You're the King! Do you think you're the only one who's worried? Who's grieving? I don't know what happened to my family, none of us do!"
He held his breath. Gladio was right, he looked at Ignis, at Prompto and at Gladio, they all had solemn looks in their expressions… 'Damn it.' He gripped his phone and stared at it, waiting for a mail, a call a message, anything!
Cor gazed at the young men before him, before he released a sigh. He reached for his phone and looked at Cid, who was the only one who seemed to be holding his ground. "I'm calling the hunters to find her… keep an eye on them?"
"Sure. Make sure you find her… that kid is prone for disaster, she always appears to get more than she can bite."
Cor smiled. "Yeah, but, she always comes back."
Cid returned the smile. "Aye, I guess it's in your blood…" The four younger men looked at the older ones with confusing.
'Ah, shit…' She was tired… she'd used too much energy to fight the daemons, she was wounded and poisoned. She was out of potions, still she had no idea how long it had been…
Her gaze shifted towards the door, her vision blurred from the lack of blood, from the constant hits she'd suffered and she was certain some of the beasts were poisonous. At some point she'd recalled her phone, but it was smashed by one of the monsters…
Selene laughed, this wasn't new to her, she'd been in similar situations… so why did it seem like things were getting worse? 'Because I failed… I failed to protect them…'
She had known. That's what ate her, she knew! Knew there was a traitor among the Glaives, knew there was something wrong with the Guardians, still she'd done nothing to stop it.
'Why?' She thought but she knew the answer. 'Because it was part of the Gods scenario.' Now, that annoyed her to no end!
Why? Who gave them the authority to decide the lives of humans? Why was it that they had to follow their will? Why was SHE following their will? Selene clenched her fists.
She was an Ariadust! She was of the clan that had abandoned the control of the Gods! She gritted her teeth as she began to rise from her spot, she spit some blood and glared at the door.
She had enough. "I'm done being their doll!" She whispered. "NO ONE, should have to suffer because of a pre-made fate!"
Selene could feel something inside her begin to move. Again, that sensation of displacement… displacement? No, it wasn't that, it was something else, something familiar… something that was more than just the abilities the Guardians gave her. Sirius used to tell her, that their clan had power in their veins… but that this power was lost, when the bond was made…
Selene leaned her back against the cold metal. She'd never tried it before, she never had the need for it, she'd only relied on the powers the Guardians gave her, but now was different. She had been abandoned. Left to die. She wasn't a Guardian anymore… if this was how they wished to play it she would do it. A strange tingling filled her body, as her eyes focused, she noticed specs of light floating around her, as if waiting for her command.
Selene felt her lips curl into a smirk. If it was to be like this, then… she would become something they would fear. She raised her hand and the lights rushed towards her, filling her body with energy. If it was to be like this, she would no longer follow their orders. She would no longer bow to anyone. She would be free of their shackles! She would become… a Sinner, an Ariadust.
"I enjoyed your hospitality." She joked as she glanced towards the Daemons that were starting to reform. She moved her hand in their direction and tilted her head, her eyes shinned. "But I'm leaving now."
The energy she had gathered she threw towards the door, and as it touched it, it devoured everything in its path.
They headed to the Royal Tomb, where the ancient Kings were buried in. As they passed through the trees, he noticed something in the corner of his eye. His heart drummed in his chest.
"Wait!" He rushed towards the tree lines, with a thought he called his sword and threw it towards in its direction.
"Noctis!"
He warped just in front of it, his heart drummed in his chest as he recognized it.
"Don't just rush like that!" Gladio complained as he held his shoulder, but he soon stopped and stared shocked, like his prince.
"Hey, what's wrong?" When everyone had gotten closer, they quickly understood why he'd stopped. "That's Selene's bike!"
Like Prompto had mentioned, before them was the monster bike that Cid had built Selene, there was no way he could forget it, considering that he'd seen it yesterday.
Cor moved, his hand lingered on the motor. "It's cold." He glanced at the floor, noticing how the wheels had no mud in them, and that the pool of water hadn't seeped beneath the tired. "It's been here for a while, maybe since yesterday." He looked towards the area, this was the opposite side of the hunter's headquarters, and if he wasn't mistaken… "There's a cave around here, some Hunters told me about it, that lately the Empire has been coming to this area."
"Where?!" Noctis demanded. The immortal pointed towards the tree lines, opposite to the place where the tomb was. "Show me!"
There'd been an explosion. It caused the entrance of the cave to collapse.
"Y-you don't think Selene's inside. Right?" Prompto asked scared.
Cor was about to answer when a shiver traveled down his spine and all he had time to do was tackle the four boys to the ground as a blast came out of the collapsed cave. When the blast passed by, he looked up and sighed. 'Well, at least, now we know where she is… question is… how is she?'
"What the hell?!" Gladio complained as they looked around the dust.
"What was that? A trap?"
"No…" Cor said. "It came from inside the cave."
Noctis stared at the dust that had formed, he noticed a metal door by the ground, and he frowned. 'Why is that here? Or better yet, how did it get blown here?' As he stood up and glanced towards the entrance his eyes widened, his heart drummed in his chest and the color drained from his face as he rushed in.
"Noct! It's dangerous!" Ignis tried to stop him. They didn't know what had happened yet, if he rushed into danger like that, they wouldn't be able to help him, on time.
The Prince reached with his arms, just in time to catch her from collapsing towards the ground. "Selene!" His voice cracked slightly as he looked at her. She looked terrible, she had wounds all over her body, her clothes were more rags than anything else. He felt the blood drain from his face as he noticed the gashes, the cuts, the bruises. "By the gods… what happened to you?" He whispered as he looked at her face, she was pale, too pale.
He didn't like it, it reminded him of that day… He removed his jacket and involved her in it, with his hand he brushed away the blood from a gash on her temple, it was then that she reacted.
Her eyes shot open, she took a gasp of air in, and reached for her dagger. "Selene!" He called for her when the dagger lingered closer to his neck. Everyone froze, the two stared at each other. Noctis couldn't breathe, he literally couldn't breathe, there was something in her eyes, they shone like molten gold. There was power there, a power he didn't recognize a pressure that he feared…
She looked at him for a moment, her hand trembled as she held the dagger, Noctis reached for her hand, gently holding it. "Selene… It's me." The glim in her eyes seemed to fade, and he could tell that as it did her eyes weren't focused. With his other hand he held her cheek. "Selene?"
She blinked, eyes seeming to regain some focus as she looked into his eyes. "N-Noct…?" Her voice was coarse, like she'd spent the day screaming, she glanced at her hand, the hand that held the knife, the knife that was placed at his throat. Almost instantly she released it. And looked back at him.
Her eyes were a swirl of emotions, there was confusion, horror, bloodlust… and then as she stared into his, as those emotions seemed to clear, fear took place. She reached for his shirt, gripping it, with all her strength. "N-Noct! Y-your… d-ad! I, I-! W-we need to, to hurry!"
His eyes widened and his expression morphed into one of sorrow, he could feel the tears threatening to come out. Noctis pulled her into his embrace, hugged her, strongly, as he fought the tears from coming out. He combed her hair and kissed her temple. "I know… Selene, it's too late…"
Her eyes widened as she gripped his shirt. 'It's too late.' The words repeated in her head and she pushed him away, as she stumbled back.
"Selene." Noctis called but she didn't seem to be listening.
Selene stared at him, but she wasn't seeing him, the world was growing darker. She had trained, she had done everything to protect the little she had left… Her gaze shifted towards the Marshal. There were many things she wanted to ask, many things she wanted to say but what left her mouth was… "What time is it?"
The man blinked confused and reached for his watch. "10 minutes past 6."
As she got her answer Selene's body completely shut down. Noctis reached to hold her as she fainted, he looked at her pale face and noticed as the tears rolled from her closed eyes. He scowled and hugged her, he'd forgotten that to Selene, his dad had also been a foster father…
"I'm sorry…" He whispered in her ear, but she didn't answer.
The needle moved towards the 7th hour. He looked at it for a moment before looking at his hands, the sword still glowed whenever he touched it. He'd needed time, he'd needed for things to change, he needed to apologize... a sigh left his lips.
Someone touched his shoulder. "You are dreaming, Odin."
He looked at his sovereign, his friend, the only person he vowed to follow, even in death. He glanced back towards his hands and the sword was gone. A smile appeared on his lips. "Yes... I guess I am..." He looked back at the clock. "Half the hours have passed..."
"Another half left." She answered as she brushed by him, towards the water. She didn't sink, she would never sink... a butterfly emerged from the water and floated around her extended hand. "Things, will only get harder..." She glanced at him. "For you and me."
AN: Well, we are halfway there, the sevent hour has started. We are now officially in the game. No turning back. Anyways, I hope you enjoyed it and hope you stick around for more, see you all.
