-THE FIFTH RACE-
Chapter 4 – The Merging Is Complete…
"Ladies and gentlemen. This is your pilot speaking. We will be landing shortly. Please collect any personal items you wish to take with you as you leave the plane and do not stand until you are directed too. Thank you." The diplomats heard over the intercom of Air Force One. Those that could, began to look out of their windows to look at what they could but could only see the massive runways they were landing on now.
"Is it truly necessary for there to be such a large runway, Mr. President? I know this is a military installation. But I am having a hard time seeing the need for…" The British Prime Minister trailed off as he watched a few of the American AC-130 cargo planes take off, side by side, with nearly fifteen feet between the wing tips. He was about to comment on the spectacle before he saw 2 C-5 Galaxies take off, side by side, as well right behind the others. He looked over to the other side of the plane to see that the side of the runway they were landing on was equally as massive as the other.
"This is rather impressive, I must say…"
"Thank you, Mr. Prime Minister. I have had our Army engineers and a large group of construction workers working around the clock to get this base up and operational as quickly as possible. From the last report I read. They say they are about seventy percent complete with the installation. We will take a tour of what is already completed and then we will head to the main office to show you what it will look like when it's finished. I, myself, have only seen the conceptual drawings of the base so this will also be new for me as well." Clinton said. Most of them were surprised that he had not seen the project yet, though they then realized that he was likely too busy with setting all of this up to do so.
"Does your congress know about the number of resources you have poured into this base? I would think they would have denied this simply based off the location." The French President asked.
"I spent nearly two weeks speaking to them about our galactic problem and most didn't believe me until I had all of them walk through the ring onto Gaia." Clinton responded with a chuckle.
That caused everyone on the now slowing aircraft to look at him as he shrugged. "No faster way to get someone to believe that we are part of a larger problem than having them step onto a piece of it through a portal made by a piece of it."
This caused many of them to laugh nervously.
They watched as they entered an enormous hangar inside of the mountain. The door being wide enough to allow Air Force One to roll in comfortably, but snug. The plane then came to a stop, and everyone was given the go ahead to disembark.
Coming down from the plane their jaws dropped as they looked around in nervous awe around the now fully seen hangar. It was…big, to say the least. The hangar itself having several more doors in the direction they came in from. A couple of which were just as large as the one they used while the rest were slightly larger than normal for hangars.
"Why have such a large hangar space?" The German Chancellor breathed out in his heavily accented English. "How many aircraft could you fit in here?"
"When we are finished with construction." A voice called out. They saw a man in military overalls that were off the shoulder and tied around the waist. "We estimate that this facility could hold nearly five hundred aircraft. This will range anywhere from fighters to cargo planes, to helicopters and finally, research and development." He finished with a proud smile on his face.
"Lieutenant Hagerton, I take it?" Clinton said as he stuck his hand out for the man to shake. "You don't exactly look like you're here to give us a tour…"
The man snorted loudly as he then slapped his President on the shoulder. "I'm here to build, sir. Not look pretty." That had most of them laughing as a few were wide eyed at the blatant disrespect the man had to his leader. Clinton also laughed as he took the joke as it was and swept his hand out. "Shall we?"
"Yes, sir. Right this way everyone. Please, do not touch anything unless I tell you to while on this tour. Some things, including electrical work, are still being worked on in some places along the way." He announced as he began to walk them toward an elevator they recognized early was for cargo. Once they all stood in the center of it the man began. "To expand on what I said about the hangar before a little bit. We also plan to have entire maintenance bays in here and on the level below us for the aircraft. We plan to have fifteen up here and thirty-five below on a rotation so the aircraft stationed here can be in constant repair. Five of those maintenance bays will be exclusively for R and D purposes." Their eyes widened once more in shock. Such a large-scale project is extremely rare on Earth and even rarer for the militaries of individual countries. Regardless of how good their economy is.
And they've only seen the surface.
As the engineer finished with his description of the surface hangar. He slapped a button that had the elevator slowly move downward. It surprised the group that, while loud, it wasn't as loud as they thought it would be. When someone asked him why it was so quiet compared to most that they had seen. The man gave another laugh as he patted the railing a few times. "These elevators have insulation around the noisier areas to keep the noise down. You still need to talk in a louder voice, but you don't need to shout anymore to be heard. We also insulated the doors exiting on each level."
As they passed the second level, which was the sub-surface hangar. They saw how truly massive the room really was. The number of pillars holding up the ceiling really surprised the group. "We got this idea from one of my guys back toward the beginning of this thing. He said we should take some inspiration from other sources for the design as well and he drew us a small sketch of something he remembered from a fantasy novel. Something about rings, I think. Anyway, we saw that it would not only cut down on the amount of concrete we had to use, but also saved us a lot of time and money by using the natural stone. We simply made sure we had enough pillars by carving out the stone. In the near seven months we've been here. After we took care of the runways up top; We focused our attention on getting the different levels of the facility carved out and dealt with so that we could focus on the smaller things. Rather than doing each level one at a time and believe me. Out of the seven months we've been here, it took most of it to carve all of this out…" He paused. "Which is why it's not done yet, but again, we saved a lot of time, effort and money by going this route. Although we did add some launch ramps that are deployable outside of the runway"
Going down another level it was yet another open area like the hangars but had four other elevators in it which went both up and down.
"Sub-level three is the vehicle bay. Everything from Humvees, Abrams tanks and supply trucks will be here. We will also use this level to store part of the ammunition and parts that will be coming. All in all. We are looking at a few hundred vehicles going in here. Maintenance bays are also included on this level but are dedicated to vehicles."
They continued.
"Sub-level four is mainly for storage of parts, ammunition, medical supplies, etcetera. We'll just continue from here because we haven't finished putting up the walls for those yet."
"Sub-level five is for medical purposes. It will act as a hospital and allows for specialized surgeries to be performed here when we get the equipment."
"On sub-level six, we have the barracks and dormitories. Here we have divided the barracks into platoon sized rooms with enough rooms to house an entire division of troops. In the center of this level, we have several laundry and bathing areas. There is also a workout area…or at least…there will be when we finish up here. Moving on"
Down to the next they went. Only, here, they were led off into one of the branching hallways. He stopped the group in front of a large rectangular hole in a three-foot-thick concrete wall. "This will make the military people here very happy." He said with a grin. He then led the way into a room that they couldn't see the other side of. This was because there were rows upon rows of weapon racks and ammunition cabinets. "This room will house a good portion of the weapons and ammunition and some other gizmos and gadgets. We will have all the goodies in here!" He exclaimed. There was a whistle from one of the German men as he peeked around a corner.
After spending some time answering questions and allowing some small talk. They went down two levels instead of one.
"Sub-level nine is the one area with a second primary elevator that goes between all floors. The four cargo elevators in here, two on each side, go to only one location which is one level down. We will use this level as a mission prep area for last minute maintenance, gear checks and briefings."
"What about level eight?" One of the women, the French leader's secretary, asked. "Will we not go there as well?"
"It along with the other levels that weren't prioritized aren't completed yet, ma'am. We estimate it will be at least six months to complete the entire base, but you're right, I can at least tell what's there. Level eight is for the command staff, air traffic control and briefing rooms." He explained to her. She nodded along with others.
"Excellent! Down we go then!"
Going down to the next level. They saw a room that, while gigantic in size, looked to be purposefully built with defenses facing inward instead of out and a large ring carved out of the back of the room with a circle of stone left in the middle. There was more than enough room for vehicles to maneuver in here while avoiding the barricades that faced the oddly shaped back wall. In front of said wall was a large concrete ramp, with stairs on the sides, leading up to the bottom of the ring with two platforms with barricades facing it. There were also two large arched holes in the walls on the side with large, heavy, metal doors which they correctly assumed were for the elevators previously mentioned.
"This, ladies and gentlemen, is the embarkation level. This will be the room for teams and vehicles to go through the gate. We have multiple concrete barriers with steel reinforcement in them as well as multiple emplacements in the walls for what we are hoping to be automated defenses soon. As instructed, we have left a lot of room for upgrades and made it to where newer technology is easier to implement. This is also true for the entirety of the facility. In time, this room in and of itself, will be a small fortress inside of this fortress. Nothing is getting out of this room without being in a body bag." The man said with a grin.
"Do you truly believe that a normal base is not enough that you must construct something like this?" A Russian General questioned.
"With everything I have learned about the stargate and our enemies on the other side of it along with the fact that they have combat capable spaceships. I honestly think that this is barely enough for a ground side war, which is why I ordered the ability to quickly and easily implement new technology into this facility be made a main factor in it's construction." Clinton chimed before the lieutenant could. "As I've told you. This facility is not just for the United States forces. I'm hoping that all of you will house your troops here as well. There won't be a need for you to provide weapons or vehicles, but we would like for you to help provide personnel, ammunition and funding for this war. The U.S. cannot take on this war on our own. It's why I immediately wanted to bring all of you in." Clinton paused. "Yes. We may have inadvertently stumbled into this war, but it was not for want of a war. We all know how the last world wars went, my friends. I am hoping to prevent us from seeing that on a galactic scale. We told you we have incredibly advanced friends who, while they will not become full allies until we are a united planet, have already granted us information on stealth technology. We might not be able to do anything with that information yet, but I am hoping that with all the info on these Goa'uld taking our people over thousands of years and seeding them on other planets and not only taking them but turning them on each other in a never-ending cycle of religious war, that all of you will see what I do." Clinton finished.
"What do you wish us to see?" The Japanese Prime Minister asked. "That we, as our individual countries, have squabbles and differences that mean nothing compared to what is out there." Clinton said as he gestured to the ceiling. "Our titles as leaders mean nothing in the grand scheme of things. We look to our neighbors both foreign and domestic and see potential enemies when we could be looking at each other and see friends. I started out asking for all of you to come meet with me because out of all the countries in the world. You are the ones the U.S. has had the most conflict within the world." He finished.
There were more looks as some of them spoke to the others. "Let me give you examples of our dealings after the conflicts. Brittain is currently our greatest ally and closest friend. Yet, we also had a war of independence against them. Japan. Even though they used resource negotiations as a pretext to a surprise attack on Pearl Harbor. They are also one of our greatest allies and friends. Yes, we dropped atomic bombs on your lands as what we were hoping was a quicker way to end the war, but also as a test for those weapons. We have also sent a good deal of people to your country to help with the cleanup." He paused. "Germany. Despite the things that transpired during World War 2 between our nations. You have also become one of our allies and friends. The same things can be said for Canada, France and the rest of you."
"And what of us?" The Russian President asked. "We are not allies or friends."
"Are we not?" Clinton rebutted.
This caused confusion among the small crowd. "Are we not friends? We have had many projects, treaties and humanitarian crisis that we have handled together with no issues from one another. Why should this be any different? Cooperation only works, after all, if those who are involved are willing to work together to complete a goal." Clinton explained as he paced back and forth in front of them. "This is an opportunity for our two countries to put aside our rivalries and work together to keep our people safe from those that would kill or enslave us." He finished. While there were still a few skeptical looks. Lieutenant Hagerton was all smiles and most of those in attendance agreed with the sentiment…
It was another three weeks before everyone agreed to cooperate and had begun to lay a foundation for would one day become the basis of a United Earth…
-THE FIFTH RACE-
A few months later, the world watched in suspicious fascination as dozens of aircraft from multiple countries were landing in Alaska alongside the dozens of aircraft of the U.S. military, but unlike the U.S., their planes went back and forth several times before stopping in their own countries. It didn't take long for questions to start being asked on a local level, and not long after those, the international community wanted answers as well.
"My fellow Americans. My fellow citizens of the world. I know you have many questions for me and my colleagues in this room, however, we ask that you hold those questions for a while longer while I make an announcement." Clinton said softly into his microphone. "Those countries, that you have seen the aircraft of, going in and out of Alaska? The aircraft that there have been speculations and rumor about?" He gave a small laugh here. "Even if some of those were funny. I am here to give you the answers to those questions as well as potentially ask some of my own to the world before the end of this." That caught the media's attention alongside the people who had a television.
Some of which, were the soldiers of the multiple countries inside their barracks or a common area on the top side of the nearly finished SGC. Many of whom had stopped what they were doing as they either listened or read the captions that scrolled along the bottom of the screen.
"The first question you must be asking is: What is going on here? The simple answer is a multi-national cooperation not seen since World War 2." Now that got everyone who were only barely listening to pay close attention. "The more complicated answer is that there are many things that are going to be revealed in this press conference that many will find impossible or insane. I'm telling you now that the things that are revealed here today are one hundred percent true as my colleagues on stage can attest." Everyone watching could see him close his eyes and take a deep breath as he continued. "The first rumor that I will get rid of is that the U.S. is at war with the countries up here with me. We are NOT at war with them, but we ARE at war."
His last statement caused a cascade of questions being shouted up at him. He allowed them to continue for several seconds before putting a hand up.
"Yes. We are at war. However, none of those here on the stage are war with the other or anyone on Earth." This caused confusion among everyone.
"This brings us to the first reveal of this conference." Another deep breath. "Before I say this. I wish to make clear to everyone in attendance and those watching at home that there is no need to panic. Please, do not cause any disturbance wherever you are. I will do my best to answer the questions you all have, but I do ask that you all remain calm. There is no immediate danger." That put everyone on edge and he, along with those on the stage, could see it in the crowd.
"The first reveal is…we are not alone in the universe. We have confirmed that alien life is out there and that while there are many of them who are friendly. There are those who are not."
Another eruption of questions and screams as he raised both hands to calm them down. "Everyone! Everyone, please! I asked you not to panic! Please listen to what I have to say before things get out of hand! Yes! Alien life does exist out there, but a great deal of them are friendly! There is only one species that is openly hostile to us. They are called, Goa'uld. Those from Egypt will recognize this word to mean 'Children of the Gods' and that would be correct." Confused murmurs filled the auditorium. "I apologize, everyone. I'm getting ahead of myself. Please, be patient. Back during World War 2 we uncovered…" He continues as those watching are in shocked awe at the wealth of information being given to them. Many are still skeptical despite multiple countries backing the information as well. Others who looked around at the people around them were heard saying 'I told you so!' and 'I always knew there was something out there'.
The rest of the world had many other reactions. There were some who scoffed and went on with their day. Those who started gathering their families and going into the storm shelters. Some decided to riot and started breaking into businesses to steal from them or even just to tear them up. Thankfully those who were rioting were kept mostly under control and peace was restored relatively quickly due to the different countries around the world being warned beforehand of this possibility. Then there were those who had no idea due to not having any available information hubs, televisions or radios.
"…which is when we ended up contacting several of the most powerful countries of the world. We have learned that while, yes, the U.S. inadvertently drew the Goa'uld's attention. We also know that it was only a matter of time before they came back to Earth to either wipe us out or enslave us." Clinton finished as he drank what was left in his bottled water. "I will take questions after one last announcement. Those of us here, on stage, call for a general World Assembly in two weeks. We ask that all U.N. members, as well as some others, gather there to discuss this war and our roles in it. With that, I will now open the floor to questions for those of us on stage." Once again. There was a blast of noise from the reporters as they all tried to speak over the others…
-THE FIFTH RACE-
It was now July, nearly two years after SG-1's mission to the Nox home world, Gaia. Now with the new SGC up and running with full operational status expected within two additional months, an entire Army Corp, nearly forty-five thousand men and women, had been reassigned to the Alaskan base and were then put under the Command of Colonel O'Neill who now answered to a newly promoted Lieutenant General Hammond, who had overall command.
While there were some hiccups due to the bitter rivalries of the different, now former, enemies. It was resolved within a few months to become more of a competitive, yet cooperative, outlook on their new situation along with the new BDUs and formals. With the original SG teams overseeing getting the new recruits up to speed and through their new training. It took three additional months to get everyone speaking the same language as well as trained in going through the stargate.
During this training period. General Hammond was then given permission to allow off world training in different environments that the SGC had encountered on worlds they had already visited. This caused talks of an off-world base to come up in topics with higher echelons of command who were now a mix of different countries. It was decided that they would use a forest world they had discovered with large rolling hills, the teams had begun calling, Kashyyyk, jokingly before the name became reality among the troops. Those who didn't get the reference were then forced by their peers into watching said reference.
This new base was then ordered to be put on hold until they had the necessary capability to get there by space. According to a large majority of the military leadership. Building a base outside of a major supply line would be suicide for those on the planet should it be invaded. The rest of the military, along with many of the politicians, quickly agreed.
One of the largest changes to the SGC were the journalists and news outlets that were given permission to film the outside of the base along with some of the training of the new troops. This idea came from Dr. Jackson, who stated the idea of doing so too slowly get the public used to the idea of a stargate over time. While many grumbled about a military asset being used in such a way. They also recognized the need for it due to how quickly the attitudes and feelings of the public were rapidly shifting in a way that those leaders, who were a part of the original meeting, weren't expecting. Many had begun asking what this meant for their governments and countries now that a majority of the world were working together to take on a common enemy from space. There were, of course, those that had also asked about moving to a different planet, which then sparked conversations along that route of thinking.
A majority of the world were watching in anticipation as the men and women of the different armed services stood in formation as Lieutenant General Hammond stood at a podium about to address his troops.
He looked out at the near forty-five thousand multi-national soldiers and dozens of scientists under his command, feeling the entire weight of that number rest on his shoulders for a moment before he straightened himself with a deep breath. "You stand here, today, as the best and brightest of your nations! You stand here, fearlessly, with the knowledge that you will be asked to fight a war you've only known about for little more than half a year! I want everyone to look to their left and right." The audience obeys. Looking at the people next to them from a different nation, race or sex. Done for this exact moment. "The people next to you are here for the same purpose. They are here because the world called upon them, and they answered, same as you. We go to war, not as several nations working together, but as one world coming together to turn the tide!" Each of them stood straighter. Chins raised in pride.
"For those of you who don't know! Today is July fourth! Otherwise known as Independence Day! Only today isn't for the United States to declare themselves away from the British Commonwealth, but our world now declares war upon the very parasites who have taken our people and seeded them among the galaxy to be used like cattle! Today, we go to war for not just our friends and neighbors or our nations, but for our cousins in the wider galaxy who have no choice but to live, fight, bleed and die for a so-called GOD they don't have!" This caused a stir among to soldiers and camera crews of the different nations news channels.
He paused and took another breath. "Today, you go to war FOR HUMANITY!"
The massive crowd went to attention. George did his best to meet each of their eyes.
"We will show these so-called gods what happens when you mess with humanity! I will end this a famous quote that, I believe, embodies this moment perfectly." Another breath.
"CRY 'HAVOC!' AND LET SLIP THE DOGS OF WAR!" He bellowed.
The crowd roared loud enough to peak the microphones of the camera crews even as many of them, and those watching, did the same. George Hammond would soon learn that nearly the entire world had watched his speech and recruiting offices became overloaded in several countries within hours after said speech. Recruitment had gone up by nearly forty percent!
Beware, Goa'uld.
Humanity is coming for you!
-THE FIFTH RACE-
That's Chapter 4 finished! While Earth doesn't mean the nations wouldn't put aside their differences in order to battle a common foe to not be exterminated or enslaved. Chapter 5 is already being written as I write this note so do not fear! Hope you all liked it!
Next chapter we start getting into the action!
