Gibbs sighed. This is huge. A police captain accused of stealing drugs. Granted, this is nothing to do with the navy, but this kind of conspiracy needed to be shut down. Quickly.
"McGee, get pictures from Sadie and set up an Amber Alert for the twins," Gibbs ordered. "DiNozzo, get all the information you can find on the Captain. Ziva, you're with me and Sadie. We need to go get that evidence. Ducky, I need you to go down to Abby and see if she has anything so far."
Tony sat down at his desk and began his research. Ducky made his way to the lab. Tim picked up a bag they had brought back and gave it to Sadie.
"Here's your purse. I figured you'll need it," Tim said. Sadie grabbed it, thankful.
She opened it and rummaged through to find her phone. She clicked through and pulled the most recent photo of the twins. She handed it to Tim who took it with a silent thanks.
"How recent is the picture?" Tim asked.
"It's from today. We went to the zoo for the twins' early birthday celebration. That's why we were out so late. We were heading home when it all happened," Sadie replied.
Gibbs looked at her, "It's their birthday?"
"In two days. They'll be ten," Sadie nodded. "They're gonna have one hell of a birthday present when they meet you."
Gibbs gave a grin, "Absolutely."
Tim connected the tv to her phone and immediately, the picture of the twin was uploaded and shown. Sadie looked over Gibbs shoulder at it. Gibbs turned and for the first time, he saw his children. Both kids were brunette, but Daisy had more of Gibbs features and Jet had Sadie's. Sadie stood up and stood next to Gibbs.
"Daisy takes after you. She has your look," Sadie said. "Jet is more shy…reserved. Like me. They're both smart like hell."
"They're beautiful. Why Jet?" Gibbs asked.
"It's a nickname. His full name is Jethro Lee. I wanted both kids to have something of you if they never met you. I couldn't call him Jethro without remembering you and what happened back then."
"What about Daisy?"
Sadie hesitated, "I hope you won't get angry over this, but I named her Daisy Kelly."
Gibbs looked at her, startled, "After my Kelly?"
Sadie nodded.
Gibbs raised an arm around her shoulder and pulled her into a side hug. His lips touching her forehead. He whispered just loud enough for her to hear.
"I couldn't get angry over that. I'm honored that you named them after me and Kelly. Thank you."
She nodded, wrapping her arms around Gibb's midsection. They stood like that just for a moment before Gibbs pulled back.
"We need to get a move on. You need some rest soon, so where did you hide the evidence?" Gibbs asked.
"At Nana's house. She willed it to me after she passed," Sadie said.
"When did she pass?"
"About a year after the twins were born."
Gibbs looked at her, "And you've been alone this whole time?"
She shrugged, "I did alright."
He shook his head, "But you didn't have to."
Sadie didn't really have an answer to that. She knew what it meant. So, she took a step back and went to her purse. Gibbs pursed his lips and headed over to his desk to pick up more supplies he needed. Sadie picked it up by one of the straps and it spilled over. She swore softly. She packed it back up, but when she wrapped her fingers over an object, her eyes widened in realization.
"I can't believe I forgot!"
Gibbs turned to her. Sadie showed him the object. An inhaler.
"Daisy has severe asthma. She doesn't have her inhaler!"
Gibbs turned to Tim, "McGee! Add that to the alert."
Tim nodded, "On it, Boss."
"Ziva," Gibbs turned to the dark-haired woman. "Let's go."
Ziva, Gibbs, and Sadie went to the elevator and headed down to the garage where they got into an agency vehicle. Gibbs sat in the back with Sadie while Ziva drove. She revved out of the garage at top speed.
"I can't believe I forgot," Sadie said as she looked at the inhaler. "I'm a terrible mother."
Gibbs brought up a hand and gently tapped the back of her head. Sadie looked up at him in surprise.
"What the hell was that for?"
He looked straight into her eyes, making sure she was looking at him. "You are not a terrible mother. You've raised these children on your own for the last ten years. If anything, you're an amazing mother. Don't degrade yourself like that."
Sadie was speechless. She didn't have anything to say to that, so she looked out the window. No one had ever validated her skills as a mother like that. A tear leaked down her cheek and she subtly flicked it away. Gibbs took her other hand and squeezed it. She didn't turn to look at him. She squeezed back instead. They sat like that for the next five minutes until Ziva screeched in front of the house.
They stepped out of the car and headed up to the house. Ziva immediately pulled her gun and Gibbs, having seen that, did the same.
"What is it?" Sadie asked.
Gibbs shushed her and pulled her behind him. He pointed to the open doorway. Sadie drew in a breath. Ziva led the way and Gibbs followed. Sadie stayed in the doorway as the other two went into the rooms to clear them. She stepped into one doorway and nearly went pale. The room was in disarray. The furniture broken and tossed everywhere. Books were thrown from its shelves and torn on the floor. She knew then in that moment; all the other rooms were the same. Without a second thought, she turned and ran up the stairs. Gibbs called out after her and chased her.
Sadie stepped off the last of the stair and turned into the open doorway of her son's room. The Legos that Jet had worked so hard to build were destroyed, pieces all over the floor. Gibbs stepped up behind her. She turned and pushed past Gibbs. She went across the hallway into Daisy's room. Her room was almost the same as Jet's. Toys were broken and drawers pulled out. She walked into it and went straight to one of the shelves that were still on the wall. She pulled down a teddy bear and checked the back of it. She sighed in relief.
"Sadie?" Gibbs called to her as he stepped into the room. She turned and handed the bear to him.
"It's a nanny cam. Jet should have one too," Sadie explained as Gibbs took it from her and she started looking around. Ziva appeared behind Gibbs. He turned to her, whispered a few words, and Ziva nodded as she went into Jet's room.
"What are you looking for?" Gibbs asked.
"It's a stupid purple dog with pink and teal ears. It was one of my favorite toys growing up," Sadie said as she looked. She growled in frustration when she couldn't find it. "Fuck. It's not here."
"Why did you need it?" He asked her.
"It's where I hid the evidence. It should be here!"
He stepped into the room and headed to her. He grabbed her arms and pulled her to him. "Hey, calm down. We'll find it."
"It was here when we left this morning for th-oh no."
"What?" Gibbs asked.
"Daisy really has terrible listening problem when it comes to me. She wanted to bring it with her to the zoo. I told her no. It's probably with her…with the men right now."
