A couple of days had passed since Dan's talk with... God. He found that he must have been in a state of shock for a while. That was the only way he could explain his ability to function semi normally without completely freaking out. However, that shock had finally started to wear off, and he realized what he had just learned. He had just met freaking God. He had worked with the Devil, and an archangel for years. And now he had to somehow prove to God that he could be a good father. It was all extremely overwhelming now that the initial shock was beginning to wear off. Now he was about ready to have a nervous breakdown.
He decided that he needed to talk to somebody about this before he completely went insane. The problem was that almost anyone that he spoke to about meeting God would have him institutionalized. His options were limited on who to talk to. Chloe was the only one who knew the truth, and he certainly couldn't talk to her. He became furious, just thinking of her. There was only one person he could think of that might have an open mind about this if he told them.
Dan knocked on the door of the person he'd chosen to speak to. The door was opened moments later by Ella.
"Dan," Ella greeted.
"I think I'm about to lose my mind," Dan said as he made his way into the young woman's apartment.
Ella immediately closed the door behind her friend. "Dan, I'm glad you're here. You haven't been to work in a couple of days. I was worried about you, especially since Chloe and Lucifer haven't been in for a while either."
Dan couldn't help the hysterical laugh he let out. "Yeah, Chloe and Lucifer won't be back." Whatever God's plan for Chloe was, he doubted that he would ever let her be a cop again. As for Lucifer, Dan didn't think God was going to be letting his son out of his sight anytime soon. Dan knew he wouldn't if it was his kid.
"Okay. Now you're scaring me a little," Ella said. She was already a little worried. Now she was a lot more worried.
"Ella, what I'm about to tell you is going to make you think I've lost my mind. You probably won't believe me," Dan said. Even for someone as religious as Ella, this was gonna be tough for her to believe.
"Dan, I'll believe anything you tell me," Ella assured him.
"You should wait before making promises like that. Okay, I'm just going to say it. I had a conversation with God the other day," Dan told her.
"You prayed? I didn't know you were religious," Ella said. Of course, she supposed he didn't have to be religious to pray. A lot of people prayed, even the ones they didn't believe. However, they didn't usually word it the way Dan just had.
"I wasn't. I mean, I believed, sort of, but I never went to church or anything. I would only pray occasionally when something bad happened. But that's not what I meant. I didn't pray to God. I had a physical conversation with him. I spoke to him and him to me. I saw his face. He was standing about as far from me as you are," Dan explained.
"Uh, Dan, don't take this the wrong way, but have you been drinking?" Ella asked gently. It honestly wasn't a farfetched question. She knew he'd been having some issues since Charlotte died. Many times, he showed up to work, hung over. He still got his job done, though, so she didn't try to talk to him about it. Maybe she should have.
Dan laughed. "No, I haven't. I could really use a drink, but if I do drink, I'll never see my daughter again. I'm completely sober and I'm telling you the truth. I talked to God. I know how crazy it sounds, but I need you to believe me, Ella."
"Look, Dan, you know, I'm a believer, but the big guy doesn't just talk to people that way. He has other ways of communicating with people," Ella said.
"That was before. It was before two humans tried to murder his favorite son," Dan said. He didn't know for sure that Lucifer was God's favorite, but he'd read the Bible. According to that, Lucifer was supposed to be his favorite child. "Ella Chloe tried to kill Lucifer recently."
"What? No, Dan, that's ridiculous," Ella said. That was almost more crazy to her than God appearing to Dan and talking to him. Chloe cared too much for Lucifer. She would never hurt him. "Chloe and Lucifer were starting something together. They went on a date like a week ago."
Dan took in Ella's words. He hadn't known that part. That must have been when she did it. She used a supposed date to try to kill Lucifer. "Crap! Not only did she try to kill him, she used his desire to be with her to do it. It was worse than I thought."
"No, that's impossible. Are you really trying to tell me that God told you that Chloe tried to murder Lucifer?" Ella asked.
"No. God didn't tell me that. Chloe did. She told me that she was working with a priest to try to send Lucifer back to hell. She told me she was doing it because she thought he was the devil. She slipped poison into his drink. She says she thought it was a sedative, not that it matters. Her actions almost killed him," Dan explained.
"Chloe told you all of this? She literally said to you that she tried to kill Lucifer?" Ella asked in disbelief. She couldn't believe this was happening. How could Chloe ever do something like that to Lucifer? He'd been nothing but devoted to her since they met.
"No, like I said, she said she was trying to send him back to Hell. She said she thought it was a sedative and that they were going to exorcise him back to Hell."
"That doesn't even make sense. Even if Lucifer was the Devil, he's not a demon. The devil is an Angel. He can't be exorcised," Ella said.
"Yeah, well, Chloe has proven lately that she's not the smartest. I didn't believe her when she first told me. Well, I didn't believe her about Lucifer actually being the Devil anyway. I thought Lucifer's metaphors just screwed with her head. Then God literally appeared out of thin air," Dan said.
Ella grabbed Dan by the wrist and led him to the couch. "Come sit and explain what happened from the beginning."
Dan did as she asked. They both sat down on the couch, and he tried to explain everything that happened. He told her everything that Chloe said and everything that God did. He told her everything Chloe did, including getting Trixie taken away. "He's really pissed, Ella. It would almost be funny if it wasn't so freaking terrifying. God is no different than any other parent. Someone tried to murder his son, and he's pissed."
Ella took in all the information. This was crazy, even for a believer like her. She believed in God, but she never believed that he interacted with humans. In fact, it made her angry at times that he didn't. She had been pretty mad with him since Charlotte died. She'd believed the big guy should have done something. Even with those beliefs though, she didn't believe that Dan was crazy. He seemed pretty clear about the things he was saying. He was a bit hysterical, but that was expected after what he'd just seen. He'd gone into great detail about the things God had said to him.
Ironically, finding out that God had spoken at Dan was not the most overwhelming thing for Ella. The most overwhelming part was the fact that one of her friends had tried to murder another. That both horrified her and pissed her off. It was made worse by the fact that Ella had been around Lucifer right before the attack. He had been so happy and excited to go out with Chloe. He thought this was the start of something really good for them. He had been ready to settle down with her, and Lucifer didn't settle down. It infuriated Ella that Chloe had betrayed him like that. "Lucifer's all right?"
"Physically, yeah, but he's definitely hurting. I saw him for a minute. I could see the pain in his eyes," Dan said.
"Of course, he's hurting. The person he trusted most in this world betrayed him. Where the hell is she? I swear I'm gonna kick her ass!" Ella exclaimed furiously.
"You believe me then?" Dan asked.
"I think so. I at least believe you about Lucifer. I think I believe the rest too. You've been too clear about everything you've told me for this to be some kind of delusion. And if anything could bring the big guy down from Heaven, it would be the attempted murder of his own son," Ella reasoned.
Dan sighed in relief. He was honestly not sure whether or not she would believe him. "Thank you. I really needed someone to talk to you about this and obviously I couldn't talk to Chloe."
"Where is she?" Ella asked again.
"She's at home. I guess God's keeping her there until he can figure out a punishment," Dan told her.
"Whatever it is, it better be awful. What she did to Lucifer is so horrible. She needs to be punished as harshly as possible," Ella said. She couldn't contain her fury over what Chloe had done to Lucifer. It wasn't even just the act of trying to kill him. She had betrayed him. She'd used his feelings against him. Ella could only imagine the emotional turmoil. She only wished she could hug Lucifer and tell him everything would be okay.
"Oh, I can almost guarantee that it will be. Not just for Chloe, either. There's more that I have to tell you. Chloe and this priest have pissed God off so bad that he doesn't trust humanity anymore. He's going to take it out on all of us," Dan said. He then explained everything that he knew about what God intended to do.
"Okay, so the big guy is Armageddon type pissed. Good," Ella said. She was frankly glad the big guy was taking this so seriously. Now that she was pretty sure all of this was real, it made her angry that Lucifer was vilified for so long. She was glad that that would come to an end. She wanted God to make sure that no one ever hurt Lucifer again.
"Ella, do you understand what I just told you? God wants to change the world. He wants to take over humanity," Dan said.
"I do understand, Dan. Maybe the world should be changed. You know, I've been really mad at the big guy since Charlotte died. I was mad that it was allowed to happen. I was mad that people like Pierce were allowed to wreak havoc. I thought the big guy should have done something. Now you're telling me he's going to do something. How can I be upset that I'm getting what I wanted?" Ella asked.
"You're really okay with this?"
"Maybe 'okay' is the wrong word. It's not ideal, but I can see where the big guy's coming from. I can see why he thinks it's necessary," Ella told him.
"I guess I can too, to an extent. I'm not sure I wouldn't do the same thing if the world had treated my child the way the world treated Lucifer. At least I might if I had that kind of power. I'm just worried about what a world run by God would look like," Dan said. He had no idea what God had in store for the world. He only really knew that God was seriously pissed at humanity.
"I have faith that whatever it is will be to help. I'm team big guy on this one. I think the world needs fixing," Ella said.
Dan stood up from his seat. "I should head home. Thank you for talking to me and for believing me. I think it really helped."
"Are you coming to work tomorrow?" Ella asked.
"Yeah. I need to start getting back to normal, especially if I'm gonna prove that I deserve to have Trixie back."
"You will, and I'll do whatever I can to help you. Would you do me a favor though?" Ella asked.
Dan nodded and waited for her to tell him what she needed.
"If you see Lucifer again, tell him that I have his back. Tell him that I still love him," Ella requested. She wanted Lucifer to know that not all of his friends had turned on him. She wanted him to know that she would always be his friend.
"I will," Dan promised her before heading for the door.
