He had been feeling guilty ever since it had happened. He knew how upset she always got when she lost an account but he had just blown her off and told her to "drive through it." The hurt and shocked look on her face haunted him especially since he didn't reassure like he had always done whenever she lost an account. First he told her that it was their loss. Then he told her that there were five better accounts right around the corner and then they would watch an old movie and eat a box of Mallomars. But instead he had been preoccupied with the volleyball game and winning at any cost. It pained him when he realized how high the cost was. He had hurt his best friend and the woman he had feelings for that went beyond friendship. He knew she was looking for and expecting a little sympathy and the least he could have done was promise her when the game was over and done with they would have their ritual of watching an old movie and eating a box of Mallomars.
. So he decided he was going to make it up to her. Sam and Jonathan were out with friends and Mona was entertaining her latest boyfriend in her apartment, no doubt taking credit for the meal he had cooked for them. He made them both a cup of tea and grabbed a box of Mallomars out of the cupboard and placed the items on a serving tray. He carried it into the living room and placed it on the coffee table. He went to the bottom of the steps and yelled:
"YO Angela! Could you come down here please?"
"Coming!"
After a few moments she appeared at the top of the stairs and descended them.
"What is it? What's wrong Tony?"
She was wearing a pair of sunflower yellow pajamas and her hair was down cascading her face like a waterfall. She looked fresh, alluring, and most of all beautiful.
He gulped and cleared his throat.
"Tony? Are you okay?"
"What? Oh yeah. I'm fine."
""Okay. So what is it?"
"Well I wanted to apologize for the whole volleyball incident."
"Tony, you've already apologized and we talked through it. Remember how you called me a Babe?" she asked, her eyes twinkling.
He chuckled. "Yeah, I do. But, I wasn't talking about that. Well not specifically."
"Okay. Then what are you talking about?"
He held out his hand and she slipped hers into his. He led her to the couch and she saw the tray with two cups of tea and a box of Mallomars. She smiled when she realized what he was doing.
"Tony I.."
"Here let's sit down."
They sat down and Tony handed her her cup of tea.
"Thank you."
"You're welcome."
"Angela?"
"Yeah?"
"I just want you to know that it is their loss and there are five better accounts right around the corner."
"You really think so?"
"Of course I do. AYE OH OH AYE you are the best."
"You've always been my biggest supporter."
"Well I wasn't a few nights ago. I mean I am. I always am but I was so preoccupied with the game and winning that I ignored how you were feeling. You needed your best friend and biggest supporter and instead old competitive and insensitive Tony told you to drive through it like your feelings didn't matter."
She sighed and looked down. He was right. She had needed her best friend but all he had cared about was the volleyball game. Of course she hadn't expected him to cancel the game and stay home with her. The other girls had all worked so hard and it wouldn't have been fair to them. But at the time instead of realizing that she had stalked upstairs refusing to play because she had been so shocked and hurt over his callous disregard of her feelings. Later on after thinking things over she knew she didn't want to let the team down so she changed into her uniform and drove over to the gym.
She looked back up.
"You're right. I did need my best friend. I was so shocked that I lost the account and when you just blew me off I…I mean I know we had the game to go to and everything but I guess I was expecting well what you always say whenever I lose an account."
"It's their loss and there are five better accounts right around the corner!"
She laughed. "Yeah."
"And then we watch an old movie and eat a box of Mallomars."
She smiled and felt a tear trickle down her cheek. He grabbed a Kleenex from the box on the table behind the couch and gently wiped her face.
"I am so sorry Angela. " He said soberly.
"I know you are."
"So a little movie and Mallomars?"
"Sounds good!"
They sat back and he turned the t.v. on. He channeled surfed for a few minutes until he came to the AMC movie network. Breakfast At Tiffany's was just starting. He opened the box of Mallomars and handed her one.
"Thank you."
"You're welcome."
He took one for himself and they watched the beginning of the movie. After a few minutes she spoke.
"Tony?"
"Yeah?"
"Why do you always say there are five better accounts right around the corner? I mean how can you be so sure?"
"Oh, that's easy. It's because you are amazing."
She shot him an incredulous look.
"You honestly think that?"
"Of course. I'm in awe of you Angela."
'He was in awe of her?!'
"Tony, did you just say you were in awe of me?!" she looked at him not quite believing what she had just heard.
"I am. I mean look at yourself Angela. You have this beautiful home. You have your own business. You are the most wonderful and amazing person I have ever known. "
"One tough babe?"
"Yeah. One tough babe."
She chuckled. "I have never had someone tell me that they were in awe of me. I'm glad you were the first person that did."
"Me too."
She grabbed another cookie and took a bite and washed it down with some of her tea. She couldn't believe how lucky she was to have Tony in her life. Even if for now he wasn't ready to take their relationship to the next step she was grateful for their friendship. She leaned over and kissed him on the cheek.
"Thank you Tony."
"You're welcome. But for what?"
"For being here for me. For being my friend."
"Your best friend!"
"Yes. My best friend." she said softly.
They looked at each other feeling their own special unique connection overcoming them. He leaned forward and gently pressed his lips against hers. He let himself get lost in the moment savoring the sweet sugary taste of her lips. After a few minutes he reluctantly pulled back.
"Angela.."
"I know."
She didn't have to say anymore.
He didn't have to say anymore.
Instead they cuddled up together and watched the rest of the movie and finished the box of Mallomars. They fell asleep soon after and were discovered by Sam and Jonathan.
"Sam? Should we wake them up?"
"Are you kidding twerp? Look how cozy they look!"
"You're right."
Sam put her fingers to her lips and grabbed a blanket from the hall closet. She placed it on them and they tiptoed quietly up the stairs
