Rukia grew up in a land where all forms of illegal activities happened, yet the world remained unaware of their existence as they were the mafia community's best-kept secret. This place was known as Meteor City.
Together with her remaining childhood friend, Renji, they aspired to become assassins to escape their impoverished living conditions. They ventured outside Meteor City and took on missions from the mafia.
Before long, Rukia was assigned to assassinate the heir to the Kuchiki clan, a family of elite assassins led by Suojin Kuchiki. She headed to Kukoro Mountain where the Kuchiki mansion stood atop, as if they ruled the world.
Rukia managed to sneak into Byakuya's room while he was sleeping, but before she could stab him with her sode no Shirayuki, Byakuya blasted her with a bolt of electricity.
Rukia evaded the attack, but when Byakuya unleashed his Senbonzakura, she was utterly defeated and then captured by an assassin much stronger and smarter than she was.
"You managed to stay alive," Byakuya acknowledged. "What is your name?"
Rukia remained silent, preparing to escape or die trying.
Before she could attempt an escape, Byakuya caused her to lose consciousness.
