Chapter 1: Southern Roots

The southern air of Louisiana was hot and muggy, the swamps not providing much coolness as a figure runs through the lush bayou, voices yelling behind him. He leaps over some fallen branches, grinning as he ignites a fallen tree and runs as it exploded just seconds after.

The group behind him scream and yell at each other, the teenage boy not looking behind to know they were going around the mess he caused. He agilely gets through the bayou, heading right into the streets of downtown New Orleans. He pauses when some of the men chasing him cut off his path in front, causing him to take a back way, the men following.

He bumps into a few people, accidentally charging up some smaller items but he kept running. He wasn't going to get caught. Rounding a corner, the boy bumps into a figure, only this time it grabbed his wrist. The older man sighs as he looks down at the teenager. "Y' jus' had t' mess wit' de Assassin's t'night, didn't y' Remy."

The teenage boy named Remy gives a small, sheepish smile. "Julian was askin' fo' it."

Jean Luc sighs, pinching the bridge of his nose. "Y' gon' be de death o' me. Y' powahs need some controllin' t'."

Remy makes a face. "I know what 'm doin'."

"C'mon, let's get home befo' Julian and his gang find y'." Jean Luc turns and starts walking down the alleyway.

Remy follows, hands in his trench coat pockets. Sure he messed with Julian, but his powers accidentally blew up his favorite dagger as he tried to steal it, causing the older boy to gang up on him with his friends and run after the Cajun.

They return to a plantation mansion, large gates shutting behind them as they walk up the path. "I was jus' on de phone earlier wit' an old friend o' mine. I t'ink she could help y' wit' y' powahs, den y' can keep on helpin' me." Jean Luc says as they get closer to the front of the house.

Remy's brows furrow. "I don' need help."

"Sure y' don'. Everyone needs help sometimes, Remy."

Remy huffs, looking away, then the doors open and two women appear-one Remy knew was Tante Mattie, but the other he wasn't sure who it was. "Ah, Ororo, thank you for coming out on such short notice." Jean Luc opens his arms.

Ororo Monroe smiles as she hugs him. "Jean Luc, it's been a while. I wasn't expecting this when you called. And is this your son?"

"Oui, dis is Remy, he's a mutant as well. He got some neat tricks." Jean Luc smirks.

Ororo looks at Remy, his red on black eyes staring back at her, a polite smile on her lips as she extends her hand out to shake his. "Hello, Remy, I'm Ororo Monroe. I am a teacher at the Xavier School for The Gifted."

Remy was wondering what his "father" was plotting, but shakes her hand. "School fo' de Gifted?"

"It's a school for mutants like us to control our powers and use them for good. Jean Luc has told me your abilities are unique? May I ask what you can do?"

"I can charge t'ings an' make 'em explode." Remy says matter of factly. "Wouldn' want someone like dat at the school causin' destruction t' property."

Ororo smiles, a half chuckle escaping her. "On the contrary, you'd fit right in. We already have a small team and we're looking for more kids to help. Why don't you come back to Bayville with me and check it out. If you like it, you're welcome to stay, but if it's not for you, you're welcome to come back here to the guild."

Remy clenches his jaw, thinking, knowing that if he went he wouldn't have to put up with Jean Luc making him his puppet, but he's never met anyone else like him and wonders what else he would see and who else he would meet. He looks up and smiles. "Alright, 'll come wit' y' t' check it out."

"Wonderful, I'll wait down here while you pack." Ororo smiles back.

Remy walks past them, going upstairs, Jean Luc frowning when he left. "You don't seem happy with his decision." Ororo noticed.

Jean Luc plays it off with a smirk. "Nah, 'll be good fo' 'im t' get out. I trust y' t' take good care o' 'im, Ororo."

"Of course," Ororo nods. "Charles Xavier wants to make sure all his students are cared for and get the help they need for their powers."

Remy comes down with some bags in hand, Ororo waiting for him patiently. Tante Mattie stops him, tugging in his cheek a bit to which the teen makes a face. "Y' better call once in a while, okay?"

"Of course. Tell Henri an' Mercy 'll be gone fo' a while." Remy smiles, then Tante Mattie hugs him.

She releases him and he walks out the front door, Ororo already heading to where she parked her car. Jean Luc calls out to Remy. "Don' do anyt'in' stupid, boy. An' remember, y' always got a home in de Guild. Y' important heah, Remy, jus' remember. An' don' let me down."

Remy makes a face, but nods, then he puts his stuff in the back of the car and gets in, not looking back to the house he grew up in. Jean Luc clenched his fists at his sides, he sighs as he watches the car exit through the gates and leaves out of sight.

Meanwhile, over in Caldecott County in Mississippi, a teenage girl was standing at a balcony outside gazing at the bayou. A boy comes up next to her, smiling. "Hey, there ya are. Ah was wonderin' where ya went." He says.

The girl gives him a small smile. "Ah just needed some fresh air, that's all."

"Well, why don't we go back inside and dance ta a few songs?" He motions towards the entrance of the building.

"Alraght." She rolls her eyes, but her smile stayed on her lips.

"Can Ah give ya a kiss befo' we go in?" He asks.

The girl fidgets with her bare hands, feeling her heart flutter. She nods and he leans in and presses his lips to hers, the feeling tingling. But then she hears a thump that makes her open her eyes. "Oh mah god, Cody?!" She looks down at him, panic crossing her face.

She stumbles back as her brain flooded her with images of part of Cody's memories, spooking her in the process. "What is wrong with meh?!" She asks as she clutched her head.

Her eyes glance down to her unconscious boyfriend, a hand touching her lips. She looks around, then she starts to run, not knowing where she was going to go. She winds up at home, her breath panicked as she quietly entered the house. "Is that you coming back, dear?" A man's voice asks.

"U-uh, yes! It is." She tries to sound normal, staying right in front of the door.

"Ah thought Cody was droppin' ya off? Did he leave alreadeh?"

"Yeah, he did. A-ah'm gonna go ta bed."

"Alright, g'night Marie."

"Naght." She says softly.

Anna-Marie didn't know what was going on with her, but she wasn't going to tell her dad. She goes upstairs and goes into her room, shutting the door and sliding down it as she closes her eyes, Cody's memories still flooding her head. "What is happenin' ta meh?" She whispers.

Afraid of what her father might do, she packs a duffle bag, storing it under her bed so she can grab it once he falls asleep. It was just waiting for now. Once she was sure he was asleep, Anna sneaks out of the house, unheard and unseen, then starts running down the street. She wasn't sure where she would go now, but she knew she couldn't stay here, not anymore.

After walking for so long, she stumbles into a diner, figuring she could use something to eat. She sits in a booth, ordering a coffee and looks out the window, until she heard someone approach her, but it wasn't the waitress. It was a blind lady. "Are you okay dear?" The woman asks.

"Oh, uhm… not realleh." She answers, sheepishly.

"If you need a place to stay, you're welcome to stay with me."

Anna bites her lip, hesitant. The lady can sense her hesitation, offering a small smile. "Don't worry, I live alone mostly. You won't have to worry about your… gifts with me."

"Wait-what?"

"I can help you, my name's Irene. Me and you have something in common. I can teach you about your gift." Irene introduces herself.

Anna looks at her, hesitant, Irene sensing the hesitation. "There are others like us out there and I know you want to know more. Give it some thought, I'll be waiting outside."

Irene leaves, paying her bill and stands outside the restaurant. She smiles a bit when she hears the door open a couple minutes later. "Wait! A-ah.. ah wanna know moah." Anna says, holding her bag over her shoulder.

Irene smiles. "Of course. I'll teach you everything you need to know, dear. What's your name?"

"A-" She pauses, thinking whether she should use her name, but then she thought if she was going to start a new life, she would give herself a new name. She can't go back to the life of Anna Marie, not anymore. She was on her own. "Rogue. It's Rogue."

"Well then, Rogue, shall we go?" Irene smiles, her car pulling up and a chauffeur opening her door to help her in.

Rogue takes a deep breath and nods, getting into the car. She didn't know what she was getting herself into, but she had to get out of her hometown. She didn't want to deal with any rumors or even face Cody. She glances down at her phone in her hand, flipping it up and sending a message that read; "I'm sorry, Cody. I'm leaving town for a while, I won't be back and we can no longer be together. Hope you understand."

Sighing, she closes her phone after hitting send, then her emerald eyes gaze out the car window.

Ororo pulls up to the large estate, Remy's eye brows raised in a bit of surprise as he looks at the Xavier School for the Gifted "Welcome to the school for the gifted." Ororo smiles.

"I wasn' expectin' de place t' be so…." Remy trails off.

"Big?" Ororo parks the car.

"Yeah…" Remy unbuckles, slowly getting out.

He grabs his bag from the car, still looking around. The front door opens, a short man emerging and heading for the two. "Back already?" The gruff man asks.

"Yes, Logan, this is Remy. Remy this Logan-also goes by the codename, Wolverine." Ororo smiles as she introduces the two.

"You got a codename, kid?" Logan asks, arms folded.

Remy gives him a small smirk. "Dey call me Gambit."

"Well, welcome to Xavier's school, Gumbo. Everyone's inside waiting to meet you." Logan gives a nod.

He turns and starts walking back towards the door, Remy leaning a bit to Ororo. "Is he always so gruff?" He asks.

"That's just how Logan is. I would advise you to be careful of what you say though, he has heightened hearing and a heightened sense of smell." Ororo shakes her head, heading for the door.

Remy gulps a bit, then follows her inside. His red on black eyes look around at the size of the interior, then from the corner of his eyes he noticed some people coming into the foyer. "Hello, Remy, I'm Charles Xavier, I run the school here." Professor Xavier gives him a friendly smile while he held his hand out.

Remy shakes it. "An' what exactly do y' teach heah?"

"I help mutants like you control their powers. You'll learn how to hone your skills through different types of training and also learn how to work in a team with the other students. I have also enrolled you at Bayville High with the others, I just spoke with your father about it."

Remy made a mental note to have a talk with Jean Luc later. He then turns his head to notice a group of students chatting together, while Ororo was chatting with Logan and a blue haired… animal? Man? Xavier smiles lightly. "Why don't you go and meet some of the others and get to know them?"

Remy nods and walks over to the group of teens. The "leader" of the group looks over and offers a smile, his red shades glinting a bit. "Hey, you must be Remy, I'm Scott-I go by Cyclops as my codename." Scott reaches his hand out, Remy shaking it.

"Name's Bobby! I go by Iceman!" Bobby grins.

"I'm Warren, I go by Angel." Warren smiles cordially.

"I'm Kurt, but I also go bu Nightcrawler!" The blue "elf" looking mutant named Kurt grins.

"My name is Piotr, nice to meet you. I also go by Colossus." Piotr nods.

"I'm Kitty! But you can also call me Shadowcat!" Kitty smiles.

"I'm Jean, welcome to Xavier's School for the Gifted." The red head named Jean smiles.

"So what can you do, Remy?" Bobby asks.

"I can blow t'ings up by covertin' dere potential energy stored in inanimate objects int' pure light kinetic energy." Remy shrugs.

"Zat's cool!" Kurt grins.

"So.. what do y'all do?" Remy asks.

Scott gives a small smirk. "Why don't you come with us and find out? This can be your first training session to see how your powers work."

Remy blinks. He puts his bag down, following the group to a wall that opens up to be an elevator. They take the elevator down to a lower level of the mansion, Remy wondering how many rooms were in this place. "This," Scott presses a button to open a door, revealing a large, spacious room. "Is the Danger Room. This is where we'll be doing training sessions to practice our powers and skills."

Remy looks around, raising a brow. "Looks empty t' me."

"Show him Scott!" Bobby grins.

Scott presses a button on a remote, the Danger Room changing and creating obstacles. Remy blinks. "Merde."

"So, you got a codename?" Scott asks.

"Gambit." Remy answers. "Dat's what dey called me back home."

"Well alright then, Gambit. Let's see what you can do." Scott switches his glasses for a visor, then blasts a hole in one of the obstacle walls.

Rogue sits down on a bed in Irene's guest bedroom, sighing as she looks down at her phone. Her dad probably didn't know she ran away, it was still late at night, almost morning by now. She lays down on the bed, letting sleep consume her as she tries to forget about the events from earlier.

Meanwhile, the front door opens, Irene sitting in her chair in the front living room, knowing who had just entered. "Raven. I was expecting you." Irene says.

"Yes, well, I had to take a detour. Xavier got to the boy before I could." A blue skinned and red haired mutant says as she walks through to the front living room.

"I have some news that might help your situation." Irene offers, Raven looking at her curiously. "I've taken in a teen girl who has just discovered her powers. I've seen her future, she'd be quite useful to your plans."

"Is she here?" Raven asks.

"She's asleep right now, but I promised to tell her everything she wants to know. She seems… frightened and confused. I only want to help her."

"Well then, perhaps she could come with me to Bayville and join my team once we figure out what she can do. I already have some boys enrolled at Bayville High. She might be what I need to take down Xavier."

"But what about the boy that they just picked up?"

"I think this girl you just picked up will be better than him to be honest, besides, I can't trust a thief. He might get in the way of my plans."

"Then it's settled?"

"Tomorrow morning we will tell her what we need her to know and then we're going to Bayville." Raven smiles a bit.

"Careful, Raven. Eventually she'll find out about your plans. She plays a crucial part in your future." Irene warns her, a stern look on her face.

"Don't worry, Irene. Everything will be fine." Raven reassures her. "I will make sure of it."
