I was walking back after sneaking away from Dauntless for a few hours, when I was walking by the chasm when I felt a hand grab me, and another had set to pulling me towards the chasm. "Come on get her over." I heard a voice while I struggled against them, I felt them knock my head on the wall but somehow, I remained conscious. "Hey!" I couldn't even process anything, before I was pulled back and shoved behind the corner, while my savior took care of the attackers. I couldn't see the face properly, because I must've hit my head. "Are you alright stiff?" His rough voice said, the rough voice could only belong to one person... My secret crush, and my only ever one-night stand, Eric Coulter. "No..." I managed. He frowned as we started walking towards the infirmary, well me stumbling along. "Damn it the infirmary's closed... Come on." He helped me to his apartment, but right as we reached it, I dropped to my knees, in pain. I felt Eric lift me into his arms, as he opened the door, and carried me inside. He laid me on the bed. "I'll be right back." He said as he went to get a few things. "Here, put this on." He said, handing me his sweater, which I pulled over my head, mouthing a thank you. He knelt down in front of me, before cleaning my hands. "Eric... I need to talk to you about something..." "Try to sleep, Stiff. We'll talk in the morning." He said before he walked to the other room. I laid down and closed my eyes.
In the morning, I woke just in time to see Eric come in. "Morning." "How are you feeling?" Eric asked, as I sat up. "Better, thank you..." Eric said "Good. Where did you go yesterday?" He sat next to me. "Erudite General... I wasn't feeling well, and the infirmary was so packed... I just didn't know where else to go. I told Caleb and... I just went. I'm sorry, I know it's against the rules for initiates to leave the compound without a leader, and I..." Eric said "It is, and while I understand why you did it, I wished you would've told me so I could've escorted you. But that's in the past. When and if Max confronts you, say you were with me. I wasn't even at the compound either, I just got back minutes after you." I nodded. "Thank you…" "So what did you want to tell me last night?" He asked, looking at me, as I turned, sitting my leg on the bed so I could face him. "It's three things…" Eric said "Whatever it is , Stiff, we can work through it, even if it's just as friends." I took a deep breath as I said "Well 1 is bad… the other two will be shocking…" Eric said "Why don't you tell me the shocking ones first?"
"Okay… So 1 is… I'm pregnant… The baby would be yours…" I said ducking my head, Eric lifted my chin. "Stiff… I…" I put a finger to his lips. "And 2 is I'm in love with you." Eric's eyes lit up. "You do?" I nodded, as he kissed me, which I happily returned. "Wow." I whispered, as he said "We can continue this conversation later. We should get to the cafe." We went to the cafe and ate.
The next few weeks went by quickly. We had just became full members, I ranked 1st, and chose to follow my heart and go into leadership. We just got injected with what Eric said was a tracking device, before we celebrated in the cafe. Later, before we went to the initiate lounges, Eric stopped me. "I'm really uneasy about you staying with the initiates…" I said "I'll be okay. I'll see you in the morning?" He nodded, kissing my forehead, as we went to our separate rooms. Since I got attacked and we confessed everything to each other we became a couple, though we kept it secret, only the infirmary staff and Max knew, and I spent most nights in Eric's.
In the middle of the night, closer to the morning I woke up with a pounding headache. I managed to reach Eric's apartment, knocking. I didn't know what was happening. Eric opened the door, frowning. "Stiff? What's wrong?" "I don't know what's going on… Please…" Eric helped me into the room, and laid me down on the couch. "Alright, here's some Advil and water. I'll be right back. I think I know what's happening. I think I can deactivate it for you. I'll be right back." He left and returned 15 minutes later. "Hey, How are you feeling?" He asked, as he sat on the end of the couch, his hand resting on my legs. "Much better, thank you…" I said with relief. "I've never seen that reaction before…"
I said "Could it have something to do with being Divergent?" Eric said "You're divergent too?" I nodded, as I said "Erudite, Dauntless and Abnegation." Eric said "I'm Erudite, Dauntless and Amity." I smiled. "Come on, let's go. I need you to act like a zombie. We're on our way to attack Abnegation. It's a bad decision, but no one will know what they're doing. But we'll figure this out." I nodded, as Eric and I started off to meet the team.
As we marched to Abnegation, we started fighting. I tried to find my parents but couldn't. I got caught and was supposed to be executed. I was forced to my knees, near a pond. "I'm sorry, baby… I failed you as a mother." I thought. I heard gunshots, before hearing my name, or rather the name stiff. I looked around as my mom and Eric ran over to me. "Hey." Eric got his knife and started to cut my restraints. Mom helped me up, as we ran to the nearest building. "You were Dauntless?" Eric asked, as Mom said "It served me well today." "Is Dad Okay?" I asked, as Eric squeezed my hand. "Yeah, He lead a group over to Monroe and state. We're going to meet him there. Let's go." We took off fighting our faction. Mom got killed, when we were almost there. Eric took my hand as we continued running. Once inside the safe house, Eric wrapped his arms around me, kissing my head. "I'm sorry…" He whispered. He noticed movement, as I turned, a little in time to see the movement. "Where's my father?" I asked,
"Beatrice?" My fathers voice said. I turned and saw him, I must've had a sorrowed look. "Your mother?" I shook my head, Eric's hands on my shoulders, as my father came over giving me a tight hug. "She did it to save us." "Then it wasn't in vain." My fathers heartbroken voice say. I looked over his shoulder and saw Caleb. He was my twin brother though he was five minutes younger. He chose to stay at Abnegation. I gave him a hug, before Marcus said "We need to leave. Are there guards out front?" He said "What's happening, why is this happening? Why are Dauntless fighting for Erudite? I don't understand."
I took a deep breath as Eric's hand touched my back gently. "They don't know what they're doing, they're in a simulation. No, it's clear." I explained. "How are you awake?" My Dad asked. I looked to Eric, who said "The simulation's don't work on her." "We need to wake the others up… We need to get into Dauntless…" "That's a fortress. It's impossible." Marcus argued. Eric's eyes met mine. "We can get us in there. Marcus, Dad and Caleb. Let's go. The rest of you stay here and stay hidden. We'll be back soon." We took off to the train. Once we helped my dad, Marcus and Caleb on, Eric swung up. I was running out of ground to run on, but couldn't get a good grip. "Eric!" I called, as he reached down grabbing my hand, pulling me up, enough for me to get on. "Thanks." I whispered. Eric smiled. We rode the train till we saw Dauntless coming into view. "Get ready." Eric called. "Why?" My father asked. "You're not going to like it." I said as Eric ran and jumped on to the roof. Each of us jumped off, Eric catching me mid air so I didn't hurt the baby, before we ran to the entrance. "There's a net at the bottom." I looked nervously at Eric, as if to confirm. "She's right. Don't think just jump." I jumped, landing on the net, before climbing off. Eric, came next then Caleb, Dad, and Marcus. "Everyone good?" I asked. They nodded. "I'm going to go ahead." Eric said, looking at me, I knew better than to argue, so I just nodded. He placed a kiss on my head, before running off. "Do you really think that was appropriate?" My dad questioned. I said "It was. We're Dauntless, we're okay with pda. Even a crazy way out of line, pda. Let's go." We took off running. No Dauntless were guarding the simulation, only Erudite. "Alright, that must be it…" "Do you really think we stand a chance?" I said "Every moment we waste, another member of your faction dies, and another one of mine becomes a murder." I felt someone take the gun from me. "Like you said, no time to waste." Before I saw Caleb shooting at the Erudite. I started shooting them with the hand gun, Eric made me carry on at all times. Caleb dropped to the ground. Dad dropped beside him, as my eyes met his. "He'll live. The bullet hit his leg." "There's a first aid kit in the hall. Find it. I'm going to help Eric." I went in, seeing Eric fighting Jeanine. Erudite guarding them, I shot them stunning Eric, Jeanine sliced his arm, which is when I shot her, killing her. Eric punched in the code and shut down the programming. I knelt behind him.
"I'm okay…" He said, as I laid my hand on his shoulder. "Beatrice! We've got trouble." Marcus's voice said, as he entered, I looked to the screen seeing Four running our way. Eric stood shakily, I tied a belt on his arm. "Thanks." We met the others, outside. "What happened?" "It's over. We shut it down, and killed Jeanine." Eric explained, as my dad brought a chair over, which is when Eric sat down. "Well this is inexcusable! Jeanine was one of the leaders, you can not just…" Four started. I looked to Eric who said "Back down Four." Max came over and said "Okay Everyone stand down!" I looked to Max who said "Alright. Now, Jeanine was in charge of this simulation, and caused a lot of Abnegation lives. Eric and Tris did what they felt was right. I support them." My dad was stitching up Eric's wound.
"We'll escort Marcus, Andrew and Caleb back to Abnegation." Eric said, as My dad finished up, and wrapped. "No, I can not per…" I said "We told the leaders, who were in hiding, me and Eric would be back once it was safe." Max said "Fine, Go hurry." Eric and I got back on the train, with Dad, Marcus, and Caleb. "So What's your relationship with my daughter?" My dad asked. "Well Umm Since we have everyone here. Tris, Can you stand right here?" I blushed, standing in front of him, as he knelt down. "Eric…" I gasped. "Tris, Ever since you jumped first when you arrived, You've had me under your spell. When I saved you that night from the initiates trying to throw you into the Chasm, I knew you were my soulmate. I know I don't say I love you, often, but I strive to make sure I show you in other ways. I'm not even sure the exact moment, when I fell for you, but I just know I don't want to be without you. You give me strength, when I feel like I don't have enough. Will you marry me?" I felt the tears in my eyes, as I nodded. "Yes." He slid a ring on my finger before placing a kiss on my lips. Once we pulled apart, we turned to my dad and brother.
"We approve." They said, softly. "But We do have concerns about your temper, Eric." Eric said "Oh believe me, I understand your concerns, but I've never laid my hands on Tris in any way but love." I felt his arm wrapped around my shoulder. "It's true. He's never laid a hand on me to harm me. Sure he showed his temper during initiation, but he's never harmed me." My dad and Caleb said "Good." "Beatrice, Can I speak to you for a moment?" I nodded, as I stepped away with my dad. "Look I know I disappointed you when I left…" He said "Let me talk…" I nodded as he said "I was angry at first, but then your mom explained why you defected, well part of it… and I want to tell you, that I don't care what faction you chose to be your home, I'm so incredibly proud of you for knowing, your heart, and where you belong. I hate this faction before blood rule. I never see you…" I said "Well I am training to be a leader, so we'll be seeing more of each other." His eyes lit up. After we got them back and settled, we returned to Dauntless. "Hey Max, can you do us a favor?" Eric asked when we saw Max. Max smiled and said "Sure, kids what's up?" His wife, Kara, came over and linked her arm with Max. "Hey Kara." I greeted, as Eric held me close. "So what did I walk into?" Kara asked. Eric said "Right. Will you marry us?" Max said "Um, Son I'm already married." I hid a little laughter.
"I mean, will you marry Tris and I." Eric, clarified. Max said "Umm Son, have you thought this through? You two barely started dating." Eric said "Max, we've both thought this through. We're ready. And you know we've been dating for longer than the faction knows." Max said "Alright, let's do this. But I won't file it till tomorrow, give you more time to sober up." I chuckled internally, before Eric said "Fine, whatever floats your boat, but when we tell you to file it tomorrow, no arguments." We went into his office and got married, before we went to his apartment, which is where I tried to take off my sweater. "Damn it. Eric?" He came up behind me, before helping me take off the sweater. "Better?" I nodded, I still had my tank top on, before grabbing my pajama pants, okay really Eric's spare pants, before I pulled them on. I turned to Eric, smiling when he had already changed, and laying on the bed, with his arms wide open. "Come here." He whispered, as I crawled into his arms. "MMMM. I missed this last night." "I know me too… Now get some rest, tomorrow we start your training." He whispered, as we drifted to sleep.
