AN:

This is my first ever story. I was running out of stories to read on this website and AO3 so I went to Wattpad. I saw so many amazing ideas that were very poorly executed. I wanted to see if I could do better. Please leave your thoughts on anything I can improve on, formatting or story, I don't really mind which. All feedback is appreciated.

This is a story where Sabine is force sensitive and is forced to leave her family because of it. Sabine is 12 and Tristan is 10 here if you miss it later. Ezra will come into play in a couple chapters. The prologue will be split into three parts(probably) that should cover everything that happens to Sabine up until the start of Season 1. All characters in this chapter(maybe except Alrich) will seem a bit OOC because Sabine hasn't blown up the academy(and won't in this story). Sabine and Tristan will be a lot closer than they are in the show, and I like to assume that they were close before the academy went boom boom.

Disclaimer: I don't own Star Wars Rebels or any related material.

Prologue I

Sabine Wren was gifted. It didn't take a force user to see that. It has only been a few months since she joined the Imperial Academy on Mandalore, yet she is already at the top of her class, being the quickest cadet ever to complete the language unit during espionage training. Having finished her first term at the Academy, she rushed home from Sundari to tell them the good news.

Krownest

"Sabine Wren to Clan Wren, requesting permission to land."

"Permission granted, welcome home, ad'ika."

"Dad!"

Sabine was excited to be home. It was the first time in six standard months that she had gotten the opportunity to see her family, and she had a lot to tell them. "I'll meet you at the landing pad," replied Alrich.

The moment the shuttle touched down, Sabine bounded off the ramp towards her father and glomped him immediately, nearly knocking him off his feet. "There's so much cool stuff I want to tell you about, dad!"

After he regained his balance, he smiled and said "All in due time, ad'ika. I have to take care of some business with your mother before dinner." Slowly letting her down, Alrich took her hand and guided her to walk with him. "You can tell us everything you've been up to then. Tristan has been waiting to spar with you to see how much you've improved. Go have some fun before dinner."

Before he even knew what was happening, Sabine dashed off, yelling back to him, "Ok dad! Cya later!"

Training Room

Tristan Wren was looking out the window trying to spot the shuttle his parents gifted Sabine a few months back. She needed a way to commute from Krownest to Mandalore, and she was also learning how to fly at the academy, so they decided that she would get a shuttle as a gift for being accepted into the Imperial Academy.

He knew Sabine was gifted. She was good at everything she did, and she even picked up the artistic talent of her father. She was already one of the most intelligent people in the clan, and she was only 12 years old. Sabine was his role model, and when she left for the academy, he wanted to do everything in his power to catch up to her. He knew that at 10 years old he wouldn't be allowed to do more advanced training, from experience. He had asked his parents a week after Sabine had left if he could use a jetpack. The answer was a resounding "NO!" from both Ursa, and surprisingly, Alrich. Well, at least he tried.

Once he saw the shuttle land, he immediately started prepping for a spar, wanting to see how he matched up to his older sister. It was only a few minutes later when he heard a feminine voice shout:

"Hi Tristan!"

Tristan was in the middle of getting a couple training sticks from the storage when he turned around to see Sabine in the doorway, panting slightly, but with a grin larger than a tooka's.

"Sabine!"

He dropped everything and glomped her, just as she had done earlier to their father. Tristan was already gaining muscle at an early age, and Sabine couldn't stay on her feet. They both tumbled to the ground, laughing all the way. After calming down from their adrenaline high, Tristan just looked at her.

"I missed you, Sabine."

"Me too, Tristan. Me too."

"Wanna spar?"

"Oh, you are so going down."

Throne Room

Alrich watched as Sabine ran through the stronghold directly to the training room, chuckling as he walked in the throne room.

"What's so funny, cyar'ika?"

"Sabine seems to have unlimited energy today. She's been running and jumping the moment she got back."

"Well, I did just get a report from the academy, and it looks like Sabine is doing exceptionally well," Ursa replied with a chuckle of her own.

They both knew Sabine was gifted. She was a prodigy in every sense of the word. She was leaps and bounds above everyone in her age level in nearly every category. It was almost scary. "It looks like Sabine set a few records for a cadet, and apparently, the Empire wants her to start working on some sort of project for them once she returns," Ursa continued.

Alrich walked up to his wife and asked, "Need any help, cyar'ika?"

"No, I just finished all the paperwork for today. Sometimes I wonder why I took this position, there's no fighting at all, just politics and paperwork," Ursa complained.

Ursa. The countess of Clan Wren, as well as his wife. They were like fire and water, one an artist, the other, a warrior. Yet, they loved each other all the same. They would always argue on how to raise their children. While Ursa cared for her children dearly, being the countess comes with responsibilities, many times having to put the clan before her children. Alrich was the opposite. He was married into the clan and took the Wren surname, and while he was just as loyal to it as any other member, he always had a soft spot for his children, especially Sabine, who took up many of his artistic habits.

Alrich rolled his eyes, then asked, "Well, since we have the extra time before dinner, we could go watch the kids spar. Tristan ran to the training room the moment he heard Sabine was en route home."

Ursa smiled and walked off, grabbing his hand and leading him out the door.

Training Room, Spectator Area

The first thing Ursa and Alrich noticed when approaching the room was a lot of laughter. After walking up to the stands, they saw Sabine and Tristan laughing and giggling while rolling around on the ground. Both parents just smiled while holding each other's hands, on the verge of shedding tears. Seeing their children so happy brought overwhelming joy to both of their hearts.

After a few minutes, the children began to spar. While Sabine was definitely more agile, because of all his extra training, Tristan had a strength advantage despite being two years younger. Sabine was moving around quickly, almost too quickly for anyone to do, looking for gaps in Tristan's defense. She was a little confused. She knew she was fast, but she was never this fast. It felt off, but it gave her the advantage she needed to find a weakness. Eventually, she got through by feinting a hook, leaving his core open. She sent a kick right into his abdomen, sending him into a tall rack filled with weights. As the rack began to fall over, Sabine's eyes widened in surprise and panic.

"TRISTAN!"

Sabine closed her eyes, not wanting to see the outcome, when she felt a pull in her mind, telling her to lift her arm up. She didn't know what she did, or why, but when she opened her eyes, she saw the rack hovering at a 45 degree angle above Tristan, and a few weights that fell out of the rack floating above his head. She gasped in both awe and horror, but not wanting to risk Tristan, she didn't move an inch. Tristan, in just as much surprise as she was, quickly regained his senses and rolled out from underneath all the weights, still looking back in fear at what could have been his early demise. After seeing Tristan was safe, Sabine slowly dropped her extended arm to her side, and both the rack and the weights fell to the floor with a loud bang. Immediately, she ran up to her younger brother and wrapped him in a tight hug, tears already streaming down her face. Tristan hugged her back, too stunned to do anything else.

From the stands, both Ursa and Alrich were gasping in shock at what they just witnessed. They shared a look that said 'Sabine is force sensitive!?', both still trying to process the near tragedy that had just occurred. With another look, they decided to talk about it later, and calmly walked down to the children, embracing them both. A few minutes later, another clan member walked in and told the family that dinner was ready. Sabine was still crying and tightly wrapped around Tristan, who was just as stunned as he was earlier, neither of them hearing the call. Alrich released her hug on the two kids and gently pried Sabine from Tristan, then pulling her into another hug, while Ursa did the same for Tristan. Finally, after twenty minutes of near silence, Alrich finally spoke up, "You both must be hungry. Dinner is ready, we can talk about what happened at the table." Both of them nodded, and the family of four slowly got up and walked to the dining area.

Dining Room

Despite still being shaken by the event, Sabine was the first to speak up, "What happened? What exactly did I do?"

Ursa replied, "Remember those stories I used to tell you both years ago, about the Jedi and the clones coming to free Mandalore?"

"The Siege of Mandalore? What does that have to do with anything?" asked Tristan

"The Jedi we fought with. She has everything to do with this. Sabine, earlier in that spar, did you notice anything off?"

"I felt like I was moving quicker than I ever have before."

"Has this happened before?" inquired Ursa.

Sabine thought back to her first week in the academy, when everyone was tested on their physical abilities. "I had the best physical results in both speed and agility at the academy when they tested us for it. I noticed that I was able to move and react quicker than the other cadets."

Ursa thought for a moment, then replied, "The way you moved earlier today was very similar to the way the Jedi we fought with moved. And with the way you stopped the weights from falling onto Tristan, I think we can safely assume that you are force-sensitive Sabine."

Sabine winced at the memory, then looked at her mother with confused eyes. "What does that mean?"

"It means you have the potential to become a Jedi, Sabine," replied Alrich, who up until this point had been quietly thinking to himself. "You have the potential to surpass all of us."

Tristan piped up, "I thought the Jedi were evil."

Ursa sighed, then looked at both of her children, "Mandalorians and Jedi have been enemies for thousands of years. Our gear was designed to combat the Jedi, just look at our beskar armor and vambraces. I used to believe that all Jedi were evil as well. That is, until one came and helped free Mandalore. I still don't like them, but I will tell you both to trust your own judgment if you ever see one in the future."

Out of nowhere, Sabine asked, "What was her name?"

Ursa just gave Sabine a confused look, so she added, "The Jedi."

"Ahsoka Tano. I don't know much about her as I never had the time to research her."

The table was silent for a few moments before both Sabine and Tristan yawned simultaneously, then glanced at each other sheepishly. Alrich chuckled and said, "It's been a rough day for both of you. I suggest you get some sleep, we can always continue the conversation in the morning."

Too tired to respond, both just nodded and headed to bed. After they left, Ursa confided in Alrich, "What am I supposed to do?" with a nervous look on her face.

Alrich responded with a confused look, "What do you mean?"

"What am I supposed to do with Sabine? If we keep her around and the Empire finds out, we will all be killed. Sabine told us that she's already shown her abilities at the academy, and luckily it seems that they passed it off as a fluke. If they see it again, they will know and take her away, and we will be branded as traitors. She doesn't have the training she needs to contain her powers, and we know that inquisitors like to come by to look for good recruits. The best option for us is to hand her over to the Empire, but we both know that that is out of the question. What if…What if…I just DON'T KNOW!" Ursa was already crying, and Alrich immediately embraced her. This was the first time she had cried since long before they were married. Honestly, Alrich had no idea what to do either, as any option they picked would result in Sabine being taken away. He just sat there and consoled his wife, hoping that whatever happens, Sabine would be okay.

Outside the Dining Room

Sabine and Tristan were both tiredly walking back to their rooms when Sabine suddenly felt a flash of despair out of nowhere. She turned to Tristan and said, "Something's wrong."

"What do you mean?"

"I-I don't know. I just felt something like despair pop up in my head. I'm going to check on mom and dad just in case. Come with me?"

"Of course, I'm your brother, I don't know what is happening but I won't leave you alone at a time like this."

Sabine started tearing up and replied shakily, "Thanks," before grabbing his hand and sneaking back to the dining room. When they were just outside the dining room, they put their ears to the door and heard everything. Sabine was in shock, a million thoughts running through her mind, the most prominent being, will they really turn me in? Slowly, as she processed her mother's words, she realized that no matter what happened, either she would be taken away or her family would be in massive danger, if not both. Only one solution kept playing in her head: that if she wanted to protect her family, she would have to run away. Silent tears started flowing from her eyes as she stood up and started walking shakily.

"Sabine?"

She turned to Tristan, who was looking back at her with sad eyes.

"What are you going to do?" he whispered.

"Follow me, I'll tell you when we're outside," she whispered back.

They both walked in sad silence as Tristan had an idea of what Sabine wanted to do. The moment he saw them approach her shuttle, his thoughts were proven right. She was going to leave him.

"Are you really going to leave?" he asked quietly, not wanting to know the answer.

Sabine turned back to him with a sad smile, tears still leaking from her eyes.

"I don't have a choice. Because of my powers, whatever my parents do will either end up with me captured by the Empire or our family in ruins. My only option is to run far away. Our parents will have to declare me dar'manda so they don't lose face with the Empire. Wow, and to think I could ever have believed in the Empire."

"Can I come with you?" Tristan asked hopefully.

"I don't think mother and father can take it if they lost both of us in the same night. Plus, it will be dangerous wherever I go. I don't want you to get hurt."

"But I don't want to leave you!" Tristan also has tears in his eyes now, not willing to accept the situation, but knowing it's going to happen anyways.

"I don't want to leave either, but I have to. For the clan, for our parents, for you. For your safety. Just knowing that you will be safe will make my decision much, much easier to live with."

Both of them were clinging to each other now, with tear streaks on their faces.

"I am going to make them pay," Tristan spat out.

Sabine broke the embrace and put her hands on his shoulders, a stern expression in her eyes. "Don't go messing with the Empire for me. I'm doing this to keep you safe. If you do anything to the Empire they will hurt you. They are too strong right now for anyone to fight. You just have to keep your head down and keep out of trouble. Hopefully, one day, I can come back without having to worry about the Empire. Promise me Tristan. Promise me that you won't do anything reckless against them until you are strong enough."

"I promise."

Sabine wrapped her brother in another tight hug "Just remember, I will always love you, my little brother."

"Me too Sabine, I love you too."

"W-we will see each other again, I promise. This…this is goodbye." She then released him and started walking up the ramp, not wanting to see the look on her brother's face. She knew she would miss him, miss her parents, but she had to do this. For them.

Sabine knew she was gifted, always being miles ahead of her peers. She always thought that she was lucky to be gifted. She never thought that her gift would take everything away.

Wren Stronghold

Tristan walked into the dining room with tear streaks down his face, and when he saw his parents, he ran to them and hugged them tightly. They hugged him back, but they noticed that Sabine was missing.

"Where's Sabine?"

Tristan sobbed harder, before responding with a shaky voice, "G-gone, she left, to protect me, to protect us."

The family of three clung harder to each other, looking out the window, hoping wherever Sabine was among the stars, she would be safe.

AN: As I said, any feedback is appreciated! I am very new to this so I will take what I can get. When I came up with this idea I never thought I would make Tristan a main character, but oh well I'm just gonna roll with it.
