Chapter 11: The Gatelord

"Back so soon?" Deputy Commander Argo questioned as Clea arrived in his office. The Titan was sitting at his desk enjoying his morning cup of coffee. Guardians had to go through hours upon hours of combat or use a lot of light to be genuinely tired, but many liked some caffeine to keep themselves sharper if they had been on missions for a long time.

"Just wanted to see what you thought about those files I found" Clea half lied.

Argo smiled and said "you hit the jackpot…we haven't even come close to decrypting all of it, but you've done the vanguard a great service"

After pausing for a brief moment, Clea finally decided on a lead in question. She couldn't outright tell the titan everything, since her meeting with the awoken queen was completely unsanctioned.

"How long have you been stationed on this planet, commander?" Clea questioned.

Argo chuckled and said "In about two months, one hundred years exactly, and I've seen just about everything…"

Clea then seized the opportunity and said, "Have you ever seen a vex gate lord?"

Argo paused for a moment before saying "yea, but only once. About 90 years ago, just after we completed the construction of this base, a gate lord attacked, one big mean ugly peice of work, but me and the titans on station managed to defeat it.."

Clea's hope instantly surged as she asked "did you save the remains for study?"

Argo chuckled and said "Nope, like most of the powerful vex, once it was critically damaged, it initiated a self-destruct. This right here was the only piece of it left, and it only survived because i smashed it off with my super during the fight. Gate Lords are elite vex that guard their portal network, and supposedly keep entire areas locked outside of time and space"

Clea looked at the black metal plate on a stand on the corner of Argo's desk, it was just over a foot wide, and was pitch black, unlike the bronze color of most Vex.

"What did it look like?" Clea questioned.

Argo's ghost Nestor then appeared. He had an armored gold and silver shell that perfectly matched his guardian's armor. Ghosts could record their guardian's memories like there was a camera behind their eyes, and Nestor was no exception.

Clea's heart sank as Nestor projected the image of a vex that put any other vex she had seen to shame. Admittedly, the gate lord looked very similar to a minotaur but had a glowing yellow eye and pitch black armor plating. It's head was the key difference, coming to a sharper point at the front and being more deeply embedded in the torso along with being bigger in proportion to the body, where as normal minotaur's heads were slightly small when compared to their torsos and had a notable gap between their torso armor and head.

"20 feet tall, heavily armored, and a potent energy cannon that one shot many of my titans…a lot of back to back revives in that fight…" Argo reminisced.

"If someone were to fight one, and say, cut off it's head, would that bypass the self-destruct, in the head at least?" Clea questioned.

Argo mulled over Clea's question before saying "yes, in theory, but decapitating a normal minotaur doesn't kill it, so the body of the gate lord would more than likely keep fighting. So, your going to go off and hunt for a Gate Lord right after this conversation is over right?"

"Yes and I…." Clea nearly bit her lip, the Titan had managed to get a confession just by watching the tone of his voice, and had figured out what Clea was up to in record time.

Argo laughed and said "Clea, im 563 years old, and i've conducted my fair share of interrogations on slippery hunters and cryptic warlocks, you've got a long way to go before you can pull a fast one on me"

Clea bowed her head, only for Argo to relent and say "I get it, i was just like you back in the day."

The young warlock was surprised at his casual tone as Argo stood up and walked towards the holo-table saying "I know how capable you are after how you got so much information from the ishtar academy and fought off a horde of minotaurs, not to mention what I heard about your excursion on the moon. If you want a gate lord's head, im sure you've got a good reason. So, rather than restricting you from doing something your gonna run off and do anyway, let's just make this simple, the second you find a gate lord, signal me, and I'll lead a response team to help you, sound good?"

Clea nodded as Argo pulled up his map of Venus on the table and said "if you want to find a gate lord, I've got a pretty good idea where to look"

The map then zoomed in on a large metal ring embedded in the ground"About 150 Kilometers north, in the headlands, there's a big vex portal. One a week, at noon exactly, Vex Harpies from all over Venus gather there and link to the vex network, they link up and get orders….or more specifically they link up and think up orders as a group. If you interrupt that, where there's a direct link to the greater vex network, a gate lord might show up to defend the access point. There was a portal just like it where this outpost was, and when we stopped that hookup with our construction, it attacked. Your timing is perfect, because that hookup is in a little under 3 hours, and since they usually are gathered there for a few hours, you've got more than enough time to get there."

Clea herself was stunned by the incredible timing, but once again the stanger's words suddenly made sense. The only difference that words that came to mind were from the message she had received on the moon "Guardian, you're not supposed to be here yet, and that makes you interesting."

Argo then pressed a few buttons on his holo table and a weapon's rack rose out off the floor, containing three very powerful weapons.

As Argo walked over the rack, he began saying "if you're gonna go pick a fight with a gate lord, you're gonna need the right tool for the job. If you hit the chassis below the head with a rocket, that might loosen the bolts enough to sever the head with your dawnblade, but your gonna need something very powerful to break its shields long enough to do that, so there's only one choice"

At the top of the weapon rack was a very sleek black shotgun with metal components clearly made out of the same silver and gold material as Argo's armor.

Second on the rack was the heavy machine gun he had on his back when Clea had first arrived.

Third and finally, was the single most beautifully designed weapon Clea had ever seen. It was a rocket launcher with white plating, along with a red flag symbol on the sight and several gold embellishments, most noticeably being a golden wolf head with wings around its edges that ran up the side of the top pod of the rocket launcher, and golden fins on the outside of the barrel.

"Is that…" Clea was stunned at seeing one of the legendary weapons.

Argo nodded as he took the weapon off the rack and said "yup, one of the original 20 Gjallerhorns. There are some very convincing replicas out there, but none of them have the precision and power of the real deal."

"How can you tell a real one for a replica?" Clea questioned.

Argo nodded and said "that's a very good question. Usually the quality of the metal parts is a dead giveaway, but those can be faked. The best way to tell is checking the serial number and name"

Argo then slid the top pod forward, causing the breach to flip open and reveal a tube that a shell clearly went in. Underneath the cover of the breach was a Roman numeral for 11 and the name Argo beneath it. Then beneath the name was a FC. The three engravings were flawlessly etched into the metal.

"That FC is accurate down to the nanometer, and the measurements are a closely guarded secret by Felix Crux's company. There's also another FC stamp hidden inside the weapon somewhere, and only Felix Crux's company's chief archivist knows where it is. Crux himself handed this beauty to me for my actions in twilight gap" Argo reminisced.

Clea was in awe of the weapon as Argo continued with "don't let anyone ever try scamming you into buying one. Only twenty were made, and of those only four are unaccounted for"

"Which ones?" Clea questioned.

"Gjallerhorn number 4 was lost when its owner died a final death on Mars, and the commanding Cabal officer took it. Gjallerhorn's eighteen and nineteen were lost when two titans named Tarrick and Amon tried storming a vex stronghold, and number twenty's status is uncertain. It belongs to a guardian by the name of Adam, but no other me has seen him in years.."

The deputy commander then had his ghost transmat a very unique looking shell into his hand. It was white; with a small glass opening on the front, like an oversized shotgun shell. Most noticeable was that the shell was segmented, with a noticeable gap in between the two sections.

Argo slid the shell in and pulled the pod back into position saying "locking it breaks the shell in half and drops one in front of the firing pin, come with me"

Clea followed Argo out of the command center, to the north wall, where he looked at one of the patrolling titans and said "load"

The titian took one look at the rocket launcher in Argo's hand and nodded, then a pair of metal disks transmatted into his hand. The targets were only 3 feet in diameter.

"Pull!" Argo ordered.

The Titan hurled the disks up into the air, reaching an altitude 20 feet above the wall. Argo leveled his Gjallerhorn and locked in before firing two shots in rapid succession. However, the sounds of a nearby ship landing drowned out the firing sound.

The rockets blasted the disks apart, and then smaller micro rockets emerged from the explosion that vaporized the remaining pieces.

Argo smiled at the awestruck look on Clea's face, and then held out the Gjallerhorn saying "take it, you'll need to beat a Gatelord"

Clea hesitated for a moment, before carefully taking the weapon.

Argo then transmated a specialized holster into his hand and walked up to Clea. Clea helped him adjust the strap before sliding the Gjallerhorn into the holster.

"It looks good on you…but I want that back, so don't get killed!" Argo warned with a firm point to the young warlock.

Clea nodded and headed to the gate, once it opened, she summoned her sparrow and blasted off towards the coordinates.

Clea zoomed over the terrain at high speed, most sparrows could reach over 160 kilometers per hour without breaking a sweat, and custom-built sparrows could go much faster. Clea was only making about 95 kilometers per hour, mainly because she wasn't familiar with the terrain, and going too fast risked crashing and wasting precious time reviving her and restoring her sparrow.

The young warlock followed the marker that Polari placed on her heads-up display for about an hour and a half. Once she was less than 4 kilometers away, she stopped her sparrow and dismounted. She drew her pulse rifle and began slowly approaching the portal.

After a short walk the large ring came into view. There were no vex around yet, but it was still an hour till noon.

"So…guess we wait…" Clea said dejectedly before drawing the Gjallerhorn and opening the breach.

Polari appeared and said "this is the first time I've ever seen one in person as well"

Clea then was struck with a realization and asked "did we get any shells for it?"

On cue one of the shells appeared in Clea's hand as Polari said "Argo's ghost transmitted the design of the shell to me. Needless to say this is the most complicated munition i've ever created. Even with the ammo fabricator upgrade, it takes three times the gimmer of a hothead round to make one of these."

Clea put the shell in and closed the breach before holstering it again and saying "Best to have that ready." The young warlock then set up on a large rock fomation overlooking the portal.

At exactly noon, six small vex arrived. They were very different when compared to the Goblins and Minotaurs. They had one red eye, like most vex, but their bodies were composed of three segmented metal fins, and they simply floated.

The harpies were joined by dozens more, and soon 50 of them had gathered. They turned their eyes towards the portal and gathered in clusters of 25 on two stone rings embedded in the ground in front of the portal.

The portal surged to life as a glowing white aura formed within in, then the Hapries opened up their bodies, revealing six glowing tendrils made of plasma behind them, along with the small laser blasters hidden within. They all fired a white beam from their eyes into the center of the circle. They began rotating in unison as their beam surged toward the portal via a rut in the ground.

Then, the two beams met within the portal , and a small singularity appeared in the center. A glowing line emerged from the portal and shot towards the harpies. The circuit was complete, and everything settled into a pattern.

"Alright, time to sever the link" Clea said as she aimed the Gjallerhorn at one of the clusters.

Polari scanned the portal and said "just destroy one cluster, the second one will call for help"

Clea's fingers twitched, desperately fighting the urge to fire the legendary weapon for the first time, but she held back and holstered it again, then summoned her hothead and took aim.

The rocket fired, and the cluster was blown to smithereens.

As soon as the cluster dissolved the other hapries ceased their role and turned towards the intruder, but were blasted by another shot from the hothead.

A metal ring then rose out of the ground just in front of the portal, and Clea could guess what it was.

"That's a command panel, a vex needs to stand on it to close the portal. If you stand on it, I have a feeling our target will arrive. The portal linking to the vex network means that Vex can't teleport directly here, otherwise it will open the portal wider, so any vex reinforcements have to get here by foot." Polari explained.

Clea jumped down from her perch and walked towards the portal, scanning the surroundings for more Vex.

"I thought you didn't know much about the vex…did you get that from the data we recovered?" Clea questioned out loud.

"Yea that vex in the tube we found was studied during the golden age by someone named Maya Sunderesh, and her research files were the first I decrypted. Since every vex unit is connected to the greater network, just studying one in capacity taught the scientists a lot about the entire species. " Polari revealed.

Clea stepped onto the center ring, there was a noticeable humming sound, and then her opponent appeared in a flash of white light. The arms, head, torso and legs flew out of the portal, and the gatelord began to assemble. It was a perfect mirror image of the hologram Argo showed her

The warlock retreated to a safe distance just as the gatelord finished assembling. Polari immediately began a scan to identify weaknesses as Clea asked "patch me through to the commander"

After a brief surge of static, Argo's voice appeared in her head saying "this is Argo"

"Deputy Commander, I've engaged the gatelord, requesting backup" Clea said as she dove behind cover, narrowly avoiding the gatelord's plasma blast.

"Understood, response team in route, ETA 10 minutes" Argo replied.

Clea's cover was blown to pieces, flushing her from hiding. Polari scanned the gatelord, and revealed both its name and a weak point in its shield.

Zydron: Gatelord

The young warlock jumped into the air and drew the Gjallerhorn. She locked on target and pulled the trigger. The sound of the weapon firing was intoxicating, an incredible, thunderous burst of energy. The tracking module headed straight towards the gatelord, and hit home. The gatelord's shield shattered from the power, and the small cluster bombs, or wolfpack rounds as they were known hit all over the rest of the body.

Clea fired a second rocket, hitting exactly where Argo had instructed. Zydron staggered from the hit, and Clea summoned her dawnblade, driving her blade deep into the machine and stabbing directly through the metal joint that connected to the head while Polari teleported the Gjallerhorn back into its holster.

The young warlock shoved down with all her might, and with a thunderous snapping sound, removed the head from the body. Zydron was far from dead, however, and backhanded the warlock, sending her flying, knocking the Gjallerhorn holster off her, and shattering a few of her ribs in the process.

Clea landed with a horrid snapping sound, and couldn't even hope to move as she was vaporized by Zydon's plasma cannon.

Polari materialized, but Zydron's plasma cannon fired again, one blast landed within inches of her and sending her flying back.

As Polari hit the ground like a rock, the Gatelord summoned white energy in its hand and fired it at Polari.

The ghost barely managed to zoom away as the white energy stuck where she had been a moment ago. A small chunk of the ground was trapped in a sphere of energy, and then promptly disintegrated.

"That was way too close" Polari admitted as she zoomed behind the rock. Vex had killed several ghosts over the years, and it was clear Zydron was capable of it.

After moving behind cover, Polari began resurrecting her guardian as Zydron's headless body shuffled in place, as if it was still looking around the area.

Clea landed on her feet as she appeared in a flash of light, her hothead was dropped on her hands and she fired at Zydron. The rocket hit dead center, but it had no effect on the Gatelord's heavy armor.

Zydron fired on Clea's position, and she was flushed from cover again. Clea bobbed and weaved midair, and Zydron's plasma blasts were far too slow to hit her. A vex mind like Zydron was more than capable of leading its target to hit her, but without its head, the beast could only vaguely sense the area around it.

Clea managed to get behind cover, and was hyperventilating as she coped with her lack of energy from using her light to float around for so long.

"Clea, take a deep breath, it's shield generator is fried, you just need to attach one grenade to its core." Polari advised.

"How am I ever going to get close enough to do that!" Clea demanded.

"I…I don't know.." Polari conceaded.

Clea closed her eyes and focused, it was a long shot, but she had one idea as to how to get close to Zydron.

"Feel the void…be the void….feel the void…be the void" Clea repeating, remembering the mantra of a voidwalker she had heard from Ikora a few weeks.

The warlock focused on her light, while repeating the mantra, and then it happened.

She felt an entirely new pool of energy within her, and she vanished in a puff of purple smoke.

"I did it!" Clea realized as she looked at her hands, or rather, where her hands should have been.

"Great! Hurry before it wears off!" Polari reminded her.

Clea ran out and summoned Solar light in her hand, sticking the fusion grenade on Zydron's glowing white core just as her invisibility ran out.

The warlock jumped away just as the fusion grenade detonated, destroying Zydron's core. The gatelord's remains fell to the ground, feebly twitching for a few seconds before sputtering out.

"We….WE DID IT!" Clea shouted, stunned at what she had just accomplished.

Polari flew over to the gatelord's severed head and scanned it, saying "it's intact, no internal damage at all"

As Polari teleported the gatelord's head into storage, Clea retrieved the Gjallerhorn, which was still securly tucked in its holster. Despite hitting the ground from twelve feet in the air, the tough metal exterior of the weapon didn't have a scratch.

Clea strapped it back in, and just as she did, Polari returned to her.

"We did it, you were…" Polari's congratulations were interrupted by a shrieking sound as the vex portal deactivated, and with the portal closed, there was nothing stopping from Vex reinforcements from teleporting in. On cue, 50 goblins appeared around her, with three massive new vex appearing behind them.

The new vex had no legs or arms, and resembled a cross between a robot and centipede. They had a large central flat head like a vex gobin, with powerful plasma cannons that put a normal vex minotaur to shame on both sides of their head, and two smaller body segments ending in a tail like wire. The center section of the body ended glowing triangular fins that generated their most distinguishing feature, a trio of flat, white shields rotating around them with small gaps in between them for their cannon blasts to pass through.

Normally the Vex ended their engagements once there was no longer any advantage to be gained by fighting. One they accomplished their objective or lost a certain amount of troops, the battle was calculated to be no longer necessary to the collective's goals and ended. However, the sheer amount of secure information stored in a gate lord's head was too important to abandon. Clea desperately tried to go invisible, but her light wasn't nearly recharged enough to attempt it. She only went invisble for a fraction of a second before it wore off.

In a last-ditch effort she summoned a rift of healing light at her feet, but her enhanced shield only withstood one salvo from the goblins surrounding her, and the Vex Hydra's eyes glowed brighter as they targeted her. The vex were going to kill her, and destroy her ghost, it was over.

Just as the Aeon Mauls from the Hydra fired, there was a roar overhead and a Titan dropped down in front of Clea and summoned a ward of dawn by spreading his hands out

The plasma blasts detonated harmlessly against the dome of purple energy, and Clea breathed a sigh of relief

"Who are you?" Clea questioned.

"We're the reinforcements you called for!" The Titan exclaimed.

On cue the Pragmat Harrier that had dropped the Titan off circled back around, and out of it dropped three more titans inside the ward.

"Defensive formation alpha 2" a familiar voice said over internal comms as the Pragmat Harrier unleashed a volley of rockets that destroyed the Vex surrounding the ward of dawn. The goblins had been reduced to ash and 20 Minotaurs appeared to reinforce the Hydras.

In less than a second the first Titan dropped the ward and all four Titans then dropped to one knee and put their shoulder forward, causing a barricade of solid light to appear in front of them. Now, a ten foot by ten foot wall of light stood between the six guardians and the vex.

The Titans leveled their machine guns and poked the barrels though the barricade, creating a mobile fortress of defense to fight the incoming Minotaurs and Hydras, who focused all their firepower on the barricade.

"Squad Two now!" One of the Titans ordered.

From behind the vex, three more titans arrived on Sparrows that dissolved beneath them as they leaped into battle. They created a long tall barricade on their arm and poked their machine guns though, slowly advancing behind their makeshift shields and laying down suppressive fire.

The Minotaurs were torn to shreds in the cross fire, but the Hydras were protected by their shields, and as the Hydra's blasts began to make cracks in the wall, the voice that was calling out the tactics spoke once again saying "cease fire, I've got this"

The Pragmat Harrier circled around one more time, and a final Titan dropped down from the open side door, his gold and silver armor gleaming in the midwday sun. Unlike when he was in his office, he was in full combat gear, with his helmet on, his machine gun on his back and the signature Titan mark around his waist. There were smoke grenades on his belt and a golden hammer symbol hanging on a cloth to one side.

Deputy Commander Argo summoned solar light around him, and a gleaming golden hammer appeared in his right hand. He jumped into the air, backflipping over the hydras heads, and threw his hammer. As it impacted the hydras, the hammer shattered into a brilliant shower of solar flames, vaporizing the hydras in one hammer each as a new one appeared in his hand whenever he threw it.

Argo landed gracefully with no light softening his fall, and stood up, his solar light fading away as he powered down.

The deputy commander took off his helmet, giving Clea a smile as he saw the remains of the gatelord behind her.

Clea was lucky she was wearing her helmet, because her jaw was agape. She was still in awe at Argo's display of power and skill.

"Never seen a trained Sunbreaker titan in action have you?" Argo questioned.

Clea shook her head, and then quickly took the Gjallerhorn off her back and handed it Argo.

The Titan noticed Clea's firm grip on the weapon as she handed it back and said "it's a thrill firing it wasn't it? Who knows, maybe you'll find one of the missing four! I hope you find what you were looking for from that head"

Clea nodded in response before Argo turned to his assembled titans, who had all lined up and were awaiting his orders.

Argo gave a smile to his response team and said "alright men, RTB"

Clea flew through the asteroid belt full speed, Turning sharper and faster than her last visit. Soon enough she arrived back in the floating graveyard that hid the city where the queen of the reef resided.

The same two ships appeared, but Clea hailed them first and said "I have completed the task the queen assigned me, requesting permission to land"

"Follow us in" one of the pilots said.

Once she landed, Clea surrendered her weapons and was escorted once again to the Queen's throne room.

Both Uldren and the Queen were waiting for her, but unlike before, Uldren had a smug grin on his face.

"Back so soon? There is no shame in retreating guardian. Aside from the cowardice and failure of it, it is an excellent strategy" Uldren suggested.

"We didn't run" Polari said as she appeared at her guardian's shoulder.

The queen turned to her brother and said "perhaps a gatelord was slain, how can you be sure they failed?"

"We didn't fail" Clea assured her, before Polari transmatted the gatelord's head, dropping it at the foot of the queen's throne as it landed upside down.

The queen was emotionless as ever, but Uldren's jaw dropped, completely stunned that Clea had accomplished the task.

Clea held her head high, and said "I have accomplished the task you assigned, I humbly request the key to the black garden you promised"

Uldren managed to regain his composure and said "they don't even know where it is…"

"Then let us tell them, they completed the task we assigned" the Queen stated bluntly.

Uldren turned his back to Clea and said "Why? If you wish them certain death, then just kill them now and be done with it!"

Clea's fists tightened, ready to summon her dawnblade to defend herself while Polari dissolved back into hiding.

The queen shook her head and replied "when we guess one's intentions, we often only reveal our own"

Uldren was unconvinced as he replied "My intentions are simple, loyalty to a people, a queen, and a sister"

"Then follow my instructions, give what was promised" the queen ordered.

Uldren sighed and walked down the steps of throne, drawing his knife and holding it to the side of the head. He counted a few inches back from the eye before stabbing into it, and fishing out the gatelord's eye. The red glow in the eye faded away, and Uldren smiled saying "dead…I'm afraid. A wasted journey"

Once again the Queen interjected and said "perhaps, but I think this one resourceful, it is possible to recharge the eye"

Uldren scowled before turning to Clea and saying "Mars, 84 north, 32 east…meridian bay. Good luck getting through the exclusion zone"

The prince tossed the eye to Clea before stepping back to the throne as the Queen said "I have shown you benevolence Guardian, should the awoken need an ally, I will call upon you, and expect you to respond"

Clea pocketed the eye nodded and said "I understand your grace."

Ulrdren turned away and pressed a finger to his ear and began talking to someone via a sma earpiece, communicating with one of the pilots to escort Clea out of the reef.

Just before Clea could leave, Mara raised a hand to stop her and said "One moment. I wish to see the face of the guardian who single-handedly slayed a gatelord"

Clea had no reason to deny the request, and thus took her helmet off. She met the Queen's gaze, and didn't back down. The Queen's presence was as commanding as before, but Clea endured it, and turned to leave.

The young warlock was so focused on meeting the Queen's gaze that she didn't notice Uldren catching a passing glance at her face. She put her helmet back on and left without another word.

Uldren had frozen at the sight of Clea's face, completely frozen in stunned disbelief as he laid eyes on her. Finally, after the doors had shut, he unfroze and asked "Did you know when she first came here?"

"No, I did not suspect until now" the queen admitted.

Uldren turned back to look at the door, his voice filled with longing as he uttered four simple words.

His voice was filled with a mix of sorrow and shock as he said "Cleandra….is a guardian"

Author's note- the plot thickens...

1. I did my best to make the gatelord fight a bit more interesting. I wanted a way to show Clea succeding but also failing, so this was a good middle ground.

2. Argo's Titans have some interesting tricks don't they, sure wish i could do that in Destiny 2. It's almost like I'm giving guardians abilities that lore-wise they should absolutly be able to use if they weren't constantly forced to hold guns.

3. Since this will be last time we see Uldren and Mara for a while, I decided to leave them on an interesting note. I wonder why Uldren seems to know Clea's full name, which yes, is Cleandra.

4. Clea's past being a part of her character has been planned for a while, and it is related to why her body was on Europa instead of Earth. Believe it or not, this wouldn't be the first time something like this happened with an Awoken guardian, notable examples include Tess Everis's "uncle" Fenchurch, and the guardian Savin who was broght before Mara and learned he had a child who was 110. The fact that 110 is a child to the awoken further supports my theory that Awoken don't age and Mara was just lying when she said they would age again after leaving the distributary. All of this was inspired by one rare line in the Dreaming City if you playing as an Awoken, one of the Techuns says "Ive seen some of the corsairs recognize you as you pass"

5. This chapter is my longest to date, mainly because the scene with Mara and Uldren really wouldn't fit into the next one.
