The Wrong Target
Resuming their march, Sun Jian and his army were more wary this time around, keeping an eye out for any further ambushes. Luckily their way seemed clear and they found a few smaller bases, some under Imperial control, some they helped the Imperials claim from the Yellow Turbans. They were making good time which gave them some hope. That was when they saw the large castle town up ahead, with ominous clouds of smoke rising from parts of it.
"Oh no…" Sun Jian whispered.
Han Dang paled. "Is that Puyang?"
Sun Jian nodded. "Yes, I'm afraid so."
"Those wretched monsters…" Huang Gai growled as he gripped his club tight.
"There may still be a chance, people we can help." Han Dang suggested.
Sun Jian nodded. "Yes, let's go."
He turned to Cheng Pu who raised his weapon and cried out. "Forward, charge upon Puyang, slay any Yellow Turbans you find within!"
The army gave a yell and soon they charged straight for the castle town, through the large open gates and almost immediately saw the Yellow Turban troops attacking the city.
"What the-!?" One of them cried out.
But before he could finish he was cut down. It was clear that the sight of the city being attacked, the sight of some local peasants slain was enough to enrage the Sun forces and they soon fell upon the Yellow Turbans.
The shock from being suddenly attacked left the Yellow Turbans in a weakened state and were being easily overwhelmed. The surviving peasants saw this happening and finally felt hope again.
"We have not been forsaken after all, thank you." One cried.
Another added. "Quickly, over there, there's three of them, their leaders."
That was enough for Sun Jian and his retainers to charge at once. Shocked by the shouting and concerned about their forces, Sima Ju, Zuozi Zhangba and Huang Shao were readying their weapons when they saw enemy forces and then noted three of them charging forth towards them.
"They, they look strong." Zuozi Zhangba gasped.
Huang Shao shook his head. "We, we need to-"
"Stand and fight." Sima Ju snapped. "We need to defend the altar, it's-!"
He was cut off by Cheng Pu attacking him, he quickly deflected but didn't last much longer and was run through by Cheng Pu, meanwhile the other two tried to flee only to be swiftly killed by Sun Jian and Huang Gai.
"There, that'll sort them out." Huang Gai grunted. "Yes, look, the little weasels are running away."
Sun Jian nodded. "Good, now...where's Han Dang?"
"Over here, my Lord." Han Dang called out.
He was ashen faced and parts of his armor were scorched.
This startled the others and Cheng Pu was the first to react.
"What happened, what did you do?"
Han Dang sheepishly scratch his head. "Well, I saw a flash of light and went to check and there were these Yellow Turban wizards with a magic altar and so I fought them off and broke the altar, I had a feeling they were using it for their magic, they said something about another and a spell involving Phantom Soldiers."
"Hmm, interesting." Cheng Pu mused.
Sun Jian nodded. "Yes, indeed, but we can't delay, the peasants here are safe now, let us hurry on to Yanjin and finish this quickly."
The others agreed and, after making sure everything was ready and they could continue marching, they made their way onwards to Yanjin. They were startled to see an Imperial Army already here, attacking Yanjin with siege weapons on the south and east sides, the sides with gates, battering rams and siege towers were being put to use. The Yellow Turbans were defending fiercely however and not much progress was being made.
"What is this, how are we even supposed to get close here?" Huang Gai wondered.
Sun Jian shook his head. "Let us join the Imperial Army, let's find out who is in charge here."
With that they marched down and made sure the Imperial Army could see them and that they were allies. They reached the main camp and dismounted while the rest of their army stopped to rest.
"I am Sun Jian." He introduced himself with a bow to the guards. "I am here to lend any aid I can, who is in charge here?"
One of the guards returned the bow. "Greetings Sun Jian, please, allow me to take you to Master Zhu Jun."
That answered their unspoken question as who was in charge, Zhu Jun, one of the three major Imperial Generals.

"You are sure this will worked, Sun Jian?" Zhu Jun asked.
Sun Jian bowed. "I am willing to take the risk, my own people and I will even undertake the attack ourselves."
Zhu Jun nodded and smiled. "Very well then, I will entrust you with this. I just hope it works out...Also, I'm sorry your plans didn't fully come through."
Sun Jian just gave a wry grin. It turned out Zhang Jiao had been at Yanjin, but had since moved on to Guangzong instead, that was where he was channelling the magic, notably unleashing these phantom soldiers. Instead it was a relative of his called Zhang Mancheng who was leading the defence, what he called the perfect formation. To retaliate, Cheng Pu and Han Dang had scouted out the surroundings and revealed that despite Zhang Mancheng's claims, the fort was larger than its host and the north side was sparsely defended, armed with grappling hooks, Sun Jian and a select number of his troops could infiltrate over the wall under the cover of darkness and then they could open the doors from the inside and allow them to overwhelm the Yellow Turban forces. As they passed time for nightfall, Zhu Jun filled Sun Jian in on the locations of the other two Imperial Commanders, Lu Zhi being north of here, across the river while in the same directions where Cao-Cao had pointed out Zhang Liang was located, was Huangfu Song. Sun Jian took note of this, deciding it would be useful.

Sun Jian let out a slow breath as he finally relaxed, the plan had been a resounding success and he had finally defeated and cut down Zhang Mancheng, the rest of the forces present had overwhelmed the Yellow Turbans and stopped any from fleeing. It was brutal but it was done. That was when another man arrived, he rode in hard and dismounted quickly.
"Excuse me, sorry, I must ask, is Lord Sun Jian here?" He burst out.
They turned to look at the man, saw a rather severe looking man there, looking around cautiously.
"I am Lord Sun Jian." The man in question replied with a bow.
The man returned the bow and replied. "Forgive my impertinence, I had to deliver this to you, from Master Cao-Cao. Apparently there are magical altars located in two locations…"
Sun Jian checked the map he was given and smiled.
"Ah, I see...we've already destroyed the altar in Puyang, so we need to head to Ye next. Thank you, um…?"
"I am Yu Jin, I was saved by Master Cao-Cao at Xiaopei, he is currently with Huangfu Song after they defeated Zhang Liang." The man explained. "I believe we've secured everything south of the river."
Zhu Jun then nodded. "I believe this is the end of our partnership too, Sun Jian. I will be going with Yu Jin here to meet with Huangfu Song and join the main forces."
Sun Jian nodded and they went their separate ways. With that taken care of, Sun Jian rested his army, all of them making camp near the river crossing, preparing to cross the following day and meet up with Lu Zhi, in hopes of finding a way from there to go to Ye to deal with the final altar, hopefully this would all finally allow things to be brought to an end, once they got to Guangzong to face Zhang Jiao.
End of chapter, hope you enjoyed it, read and review please.
