A Cruel Plan

With a new day dawning, Sun Jian and his army were awake and had packed up their camp and readied themselves. They quickly marched to the dock and, finding the boats they needed, they crossed the river and reformed their ranks and were prepared to begin their advance. As they did so however they heard shouts and the clashes of weapons, enough to clarify there was a battle going on.

"My Lord, that must be Lu Zhi's forces, they must be fighting the Yellow Turbans." Han Dang remarked.

Sun Jian nodded. "Yes, we better hurry and help them out."

With that they began to hurry towards the sounds of battle but at that moment they saw something which left them confused, and somewhat troubled. It wasn't Lu Zhi leading the troops who were fighting the Yellow Turbans, it was Dong Zhuo.

"What is Dong Zhuo doing here, and with Lu Zhi's troops?" Cheng Pu queried with a glare.

"We'll figure that out later, right now we need to help, look." Sun Jian called out.

It was true, the imperial army was struggling, it is then they saw the Yellow Turban general, arms raised and chanting. As he did so, fireballs began bursting out of the ground underneath the Imperial troops while the Yellow Turban warriors present fired arrows at them.

"Huh, that must be Zhang Jiao's last surviving brother." Huang Gai muttered. "Zhang Bao."

With a quick look amongst each other, the four readied their army and charged in.

Dong Zhuo snarled as he tried to avoid the arrows and the fireballs, shaking his head.

"Urg, cease your vile behaviour Yellow Turbans, you have no right to do this!" He yelled.

That was when he heard noises and the fireballs stopped. Zhang Bao's concentration was broken by the noises, he had lowered his hands and had turned to his right, shocked as several of his men were cut down, another army had arrived and was attacking from the flank.

"What is, what is this!?" He cried out. "No, how could the Heavens allow this to happen?!"

Han Dang however was quicker than Zhang Bao thought and before he could raise his sword, the man was right by him, pike ready.

"The time has come for me to make my mark!" Han Dang yelled.

Zhang Bao cried out as he was injured by the blow, he recovered however and drew his sword to attack. Han Dang blocked the blow however and his next attack finally struck home and finished Zhang Bao off, causing his forces to break and flee while Sun Jian and Dong Zhuo gathered their armies.

"Sun Jian, you took your time getting here." Dong Zhuo snarled. "Well, now that this is dealt with we can join the main forces and finish this."

Sun Jian shook his head. "I have business I must attend to first, but Lord Dong Zhuo, where did you get all these troops, where is Master Lu Zhi?"

Dong Zhuo gave a disturbing smirk and laughed which caused the four to become wary.

Finally Dong Zhuo revealed.

"Lu Zhi was imprisoned for his failures, he was deliberately sabotaging his own forces and preventing us from attaining victory." He then added. "As I found this out and reported it, I was given command of his troops as well as my own."

"What?!" Cheng Pu gasped. "Lu Zhi is a paragon of the Han Dynasty, how could he possibly do something like that?"

Dong Zhuo smirked again. "Well, it doesn't matter if he did or didn't do that, what matters is I made the officials in charge of this campaign believe he did."

"You-!" Huang Gai burst out in rage.

Indeed, outrage filled all four of them as they realized the truth, Dong Zhuo had framed Lu Zhi.

Sun Jian outwardly remained calm however and ended the conversation, taking his troops on the necessary detour to Ye.

"My Lord, this isn't-" Huang Gai grumbled.

Sun Jian nodded. "I know, I know. But it wouldn't do us any good to get into an argument with Dong Zhuo. This will not stand however, I can promise you that."

They all went quiet after that, pondering, concerned, but quickly focused as they saw Ye up ahead and readied themselves to search out and destroy the altar in hopes of eliminating the Phantom Soldiers.

XXXXX

The atmosphere was tense as Sun Jian and his forces arrived at Guangzong and joined the large main body of the Imperial Army. Everyone was present, Sun Jian noted that Cao-Cao and his men present along with another trio who introduced themselves as Liu Bei, Guan Yu and Zhang Fei. They were volunteer forces and had been doing their part, saving Lou Sang Village from a Yellow Turban attack and rescuing Zou Jing from an attack too. With the army all gathered they joined the commanders, namely Huangfu Song and Zhu Jun who were glaring at the leader of the army, He Miao.

"This is preposterous, anyone will tell you that Lu Zhi would never do such a thing." Huangfu Song snapped.

He Miao glared. "We were given the information from a reliable source. You dare question me about this-!"

"A reliable source." Zhu Jun growled. "That's the first time I've ever heard of an eunuch being reliable, or this...person."

He sneered at the eunuch standing behind He Miao and at Dong Zhuo at that moment.

He Miao stood up, eyes blazing while Dong Zhuo merely grinned. That was when Sun Jian had decided enough was enough.

"I apologise for the interruption." He said as he stepped up. "But I have something to add."

He Miao sneered. "Oh, Sun Jian, the Tiger of Jiangdong. I hope you're here to add some sanity to this nonsense."

"It is really quite simple Lord He Miao." Sun Jian said. "I heard it from Dong Zhuo himself."

Dong Zhuo froze, he began to sweat and He Miao narrowed his eyes.

Sun Jian shook his head.

"It seems he was simply wanting more troops for himself, more glory, so he paid a bribe to a certain eunuch to frame Lu Zhi of false crimes." Sun Jian remarked. "Especially when Dong Zhuo initially planned to simply sit in Dingtao and not join this battle simply to try and force the capital to send him more troops."

"How dare you-!" Dong Zhuo roared.

He Miao was red faced. "You would side with this nonsense, you-"

"Have spoken the truth, brother."

All eyes turned and He Miao froze as a large, glaring man stepped in. It was the imperial Grand General, He Jin.

"I have been investigating things myself, I am disappointed in your lack of sense brother." He Jin remarked. "I would have thought being in charge of these forces you'd be more considerate of the truth, instead of listening to slander."

He Miao swallowed and tried to speak.

But He Jin shook his head. "No. No excuses. I am in charge now and you, Dong Zhuo, you are stripped of your rank and will serve under me, understood."

"But-"

"Understood!" He Jin bellowed.

Dong Zhuo flinched but grumbled and finally agreed. Sadly there seemed to be no word on Lu Zhi being released, but Dong Zhuo was paying for his actions while He Jin had the eunuch in the camp dismissed and sent back to the capital.

So it was that He Jin took command and soon plans were made for the upcoming battle, plans that took long into the night but in the end it was set. Dong Zhuo would be leading the vanguard from the south under He Jin's command. From the west He Miao would be in command while Liu Bei would lead the vanguard there, Cao-Cao would be leading the vanguard from the east under Huangfu Song's command. Sun Jian meanwhile would be leading the vanguard for Zhu Jun's unit from the north. It was confirmed that the only remaining Yellow Turban forces that had no been slain or fled were all concentrated here in Guangzong. So with the plans made the army surrounded the large city and set their camps before settling down to sleep, ready for the battle that was to come the following day.
