Escape From Luoyang
So it was that night that things were set up, as expected Cao-Cao was being held in a specialized cell Dong Zhuo had ordered to be built, it was placed just outside the palace in the open air.
"The guard will be on alert." Han Dang noted worried, "Are you sure this'll work, my lord?"
Sun Jian nodded. "Yes, no, shh, we need to stay quiet, there will be lookouts."
The others all nodded and waited as they watched a pair of lookouts conversing ahead of them before going in separate directions to continue their duties. With the way now open they crept forwards across the street to the wall of the inner gardens of the palace. They were safe from being seen for now but they had to get inside quickly before the lookouts returned. So they took their change and launched their grappling hooks up the wall and successfully hooked onto the wall and that was their chance, they quickly climbed up and pulled the grappling hooks back up to prevent any suspicion. Now they were on the wall, they crouched low and looked down at the inner gardens, several of Dong Zhuo's guards were patrolling around.
"My lord, look there." Cheng Pu whispered.
Sun Jian took note of the man Cheng Pu pointed out, a former officer of Ding Yuan and a formidable warrior in his own right, armed with a pair of large axes.
"That must be Zhang Liao...He's almost as powerful as Lu Bu, we must be careful and avoid him."
With that they began creeping along the wall, Sun Jian seeing a route that gave them a clear path to where they needed to go, without drawing attention and he indicated his men to follow him along and they quickly did so.
Cao-Cao languished in his cell, waiting patiently for he had faith that his co-conspirators would be able to save him. Sure enough he heard the footsteps and looked up and smiled.
"Sun Jian, I knew you'd make it." He remarked with relief.
Sun Jian smiled. "Sorry for the delay, we've got everything set up, let's get you out of here."
Cao-Cao nodded. "Very well...I see we need to rely on another way to deal with Dong Zhuo."
Sun Jian quietly agreed as they got the cell open and Cao-Cao exited.
"What do we have here?" A voice sneered.
They turned in horror for standing there, holding his famous halberd, was Lu Bu.
"You maggots thinks you can escape!" He bellowed.
Sun Jian reacted at once. "Run, the east wall!"
He then surprisingly threw himself at Lu Bu with enough force to make the large man stumble, it was the opening needed however. While the place was in uproar, guards rushing in, shouts going around, but Sun Jian, Cao-Cao and Sun Jian's compatriots managed to escape the throng and reach the wall, getting his own grappling hook, Cao-Cao joined the four in escaping over the wall and, as the others fled for the main east wall, Sun Jian reached the tiger enclosure and, utilizing the special item he had been given, opened the gates and set the tigers loose on their pursuers, setting them screaming in terror and dismay. Sun Jian then hurried to join the others and made their escape, finding Xiahou Dun and Xiahou Yuan, who had Cao-Cao's weapon along with their own, waiting with the horses. They gave Cao-Cao his sword and they all mounted and quickly began riding for the east gate of Luoyang, riding right over the gate guards who tried to stop them, finally escaping the capital and going their separate ways, Sun Jian and his compatriots taking the long journey to Changsha while Cao-Cao began heading for his home village of Qiao.
XXXXX
Back in Changsha, Sun Jian let out a relaxed sigh as he sat in the main castle, he had enjoyed a simple and happy day with his family, most notably his children, his eldest Ce was practically of age and had been expressing a desire to accompany his father into battle more than once, it was something Sun Jian had done his best to keep under control for now.
'But at this rate...I won't be able to deny him much longer.' Sun Jian noted. 'If things continue to build against Dong Zhuo...They will complain, but I have to make it clear to Quan and Shangxiang that they are not to come.'
"So, father, you can't deny I have the right to accompany you into battle, a battle is approaching, isn't it." Ce was saying with a grin.
Sun Jian sighed and shook his head. "Nothing is certain yet, son. Just be calm, even if you are coming with us into battle, I can't just let you go charging headlong into things, you'll need to hang back, watch carefully and don't put yourself on the front lines, not yet, understand."
"I know father, I just…" Ce replied with a sigh of his own.
At that moment however, footsteps approached and Han Dang, Cheng Pu and Huang Gai entered.
"What news?" Sun Jian asked.
They were already aware that, following their escape, the other lords in the capital had managed to escape back to their own lands too.
Cheng Pu handed a letter to Sun Jian as he explained.
"Master Cao-Cao's plan has caused quite a reaction, already a number of lords are responding to this, I guess we are too?"
Sun Jian read it and smirked. It was a letter, presumably drafted by Yuan Shao but Sun Jian knew Cao-Cao had induced the nobleman to do this. It was a call to arms to various lords throughout the land to stand against Dong Zhuo in an alliance, with the intent of destroying the tyrant and saving the young Emperor Xian.
"Yes, Cheng Pu. We are responding, let us begin." Sun Jian said. "Alright Ce, you'll get your wish, it's time for battle."
Ce grinned and went to get ready and before long the Sun army was on the march, going to join the coalition against Dong Zhuo situated to the east of Luoyang, setting up for the beginning of their campaign.
