The Alliance Against Dong Zhuo
"So, that's our plan." Yuan Shao announced. "Are we all understood?"
The gathered lords all bowed and voiced their acceptance. The lords who had gathered to stand against Dong Zhuo all came to the gathering point and after all agreeing that Yuan Shao should be the leader of the Alliance they had obtained their instructions as to who would be doing what to attack Dong Zhuo and his forces. Their scouts had ascertained that the bulk of Dong Zhuo's forces were stationed at the two gates that stood between the alliance and Luoyang, Sishui and Hulao, some of Dong Zhuo's forces were said to be lying in wait in the area between the gates.
Across the river, some of Dong Zhuo's forces were stationed there, along with a larger force near the mountains up there. Apparently Dong Zhuo was taking no chance and also had forces making their way around from the west to circle around and try to trap the alliance between them. Thus Sun Jian and his forces were given their task, they would station themselves at Yangren, a vacant castle to the south of Luoyang and would allow them to intercept the advancing army.
Yuan Shu would be stationed nearby and would be in charge of army supplies, he was expected to support Sun Jian, something which irked the arrogant man greatly but he offered no vocal complaint. Yuan Shao had divided his personal forces in half and sent his son Yuan Tan to lead half of them over the river to deal with the mountain base, the rest would stay with Yuan Shao and the rest of the coalition army who would advance towards the gates. With these orders in place everybody went to head off to fulfil their task.

"This does not look good my Lord." Huang Gai grumbled.
Sun Jian nodded, grimacing as he heard the sounds of heavy rocks hitting the walls. Dong Zhuo's forces were using catapults.
"Three of Dong Zhuo's officers are out there, launching this siege against us, how did they get the time to set themselves up and get so close." Sun Jian muttered. "We sent word to Yuan Shu that we needed supplies, now our men are hungry and dispirited and this onslaught is only making things worse."
They knew things were desperate, they had no idea how the rest of the alliance army were advancing but they had hit a dead end. They knew they had to intercept Dong Zhuo's army here and they had hoped to do so and defeat them. Unfortunately their efforts had only been half successful, they hadn't expected the Dong Zhuo army to be quite so fierce and to actually bring siege weapons with them.
"The Tiger of Jiangdong, I don't hear many roars inside that castle!" A voice taunted from outside.
Sun Jian glowered as he moved up to the wall, shocking many of his men. He spotted the speaker, one of Dong Zhuo's officers, Ma Midi.
"There he is, see, get him!" Ma Midi yelled.
The archers immediately opened fire but Sun Jian did not flinch, the arrows missed but finally Han Dang could take no more.
"My Lord, please, it is too dangerous!"
Finally Sun Jian stepped back, to the jeered of Dong Zhuo's forces who resumed their onslaught with their catapults and even attempting to break through the doors with a battering ram.
While their men still tried hard to resist, Sun Jian and his retainers, along with his son, stood to try and figure out a plan.
"Urgh, this isn't, father we can't just sit here, we need to do something." Ce complained.
Sun Jian sighed. "I know how you feel Ce, but our men are exhausted and hungry, Yuan Shu's supplies haven't arrived and our morale is flagging."
Cheng Pu thought for a moment. "Hmmm, that is suspicious in fact, My Lord, we should find out why Yuan Shu's supplies haven't arrived, the North gate is still free, it would be possible for a lone rider to slip out and go to Yuan Shu's camp and get answers."
"Hmmm, that may be our only chance." Sun Jian muttered. "Alright, Cheng Pu, I'm counting on you for this."
"Understood." Cheng Pu said with a bow.
So while the battle continued, Cheng Pu rode out on his horse, weapon at the ready and he began to make his way across the countryside, to avoid the roads and possible troops, while heading for Yuan Shu's camp, it did not take him long to find it and so he dismounted and tied his horse off, set his weapon down and carefully approached the camp, he was recognized and allowed through to see Yuan Shu.
Yuan Shu scowled at the sight of Cheng Pu approaching him.
"One of Sun Jian's underlings." He remarked dryly. "What do you want?"
Cheng Pu bowed, refusing to be rankled by the man's attitude. "Lord Yuan Shu, Lord Sun Jian has sent me to inquire as to where our supplies are, we've sent three requests so far, none of which have been answered."
Yuan Shu's face briefly flickered with fear as if he was panicked, suddenly he was no longer quite so smug.
"Ah yes, I...I arranged the supplies of course, I was going to send them with Ji Ling." He began to explain, awkward and fearful. "But, enemy forces are blocking the only possible route the supply train could take...If the supplies are captured or lost…"
Cheng Pu nodded. "Right, well, in that case, allow me to assist."
With no other option, Yuan Shu accepted this and gave orders to Ji Ling. Soon the two were riding at the head of Yuan Shu's supply train.
"You have no no idea what you're getting into, Cheng Pu." Ji Ling snapped. "These men are not to be trifled with."
Cheng Pu shook his head. "We shall see, we shall see."
Ji Ling just glared at him, but they quickly had to change their focus as the sounds of battle erupted from ahead.
They saw it right before them, the forces that Yuan Shu was worried about, being ambushed and attacked by three figures very familiar to Cheng Pu. He smirked and hefted his weapon to join them in battle, seeing no choice, Ji Ling gave the order to also attack and soon they were sending Dong Zhuo's forces running to the hills.
"Liu Bei, a pleasure to see you and your sworn brothers again." Cheng Pu greeted the trio.
Liu Bei bowed and smiled. "A pleasure, Master Cheng Pu, we heard Lord Sun Jian is in trouble, so we came to help."
Ji Ling snorted and continued to lead the supply train off to Yangren Castle.
Cheng Pu ignored him and smiled. "That would be most welcome. If you can attack them from the outside we can come out from the castle and trap them between us."
Liu Bei agreed to the plan and they immediately went to put things into action. At Yangren Castle the supplies had brought and the troops enjoyed a hearty meal, their morale restoring.
During this time Cheng Pu reached the castle and informed Sun Jian about Liu Bei and his Sworn Brothers being present and their plan, so things were prepared and, to the shock on Dong Zhuo's troops, Sun Jian's forces began to attack using siege weapons.
"Ah, what, this isn't-!" Ma Midi began.
But then the attack stopped and the doors opened and then, as Sun Jian's forces rode out to attack, Liu Bei and his allies launched the pincer attack, trapping Dong Zhuo's troops between them and making them panic, leaving them vulnerable to this attack and in the end, only a handful of the troops, along with Ma Midi, managed to escape, the rest either surrendered or fell in combat.
"Liu Bei, well met." He greeted the other man.
Liu Bei smiled and bowed. "Likewise, Lord Sun Jian."
So it was that the three Sworn Brothers met up with Sun Jian and his retainers, as well as Sun Ce while their respective forces began to gather themselves and recover, getting ready for whatever they would face next.
