New Rising
The year was 195 AD, four years after the death of Sun Jian, in that time Sun Ce had not been able to restore his family's fortunes. Liu Biao had claimed Changsha while the rest of his family were stuck in the family's ancestral manor, but with no authority or power. He was stuck languishing under Yuan Shu's command. He was kept at a low rank and yet Yuan Shu knew how to use his talents, as such Sun Ce was used by Yuan Shu to expand his reach beyond Shouchun, to acquire the Huainan area in southern Yan Province. This left Sun Ce unsatisfied but felt powerless to do anything about it. That wasn't the only major change to happen within this time. Cao-Cao had been gathering followers and growing in power, claiming the rest of Yan Province and Yu Province. In 192, following a plot by Wang Yun, Lu Bu betrayed and assassinated Dong Zhuo, ending his tyranny. But the freedom was short lived. Lu Bu was driven away from Changan and Wang Yun executed by Dong Zhuo's followers Li Jue and Guo Si, who promptly took over, taking the Emperor hostage again and continued Dong Zhuo's brand of tyranny. This would eventually lead to Lu Bu and Cao-Cao clashing over Yan Province, interrupted the latter's attack on Xu Province. This led to Lu Bu being forced to flee to Yuan Shao while Tao Qian, the leader of Xu Province, died and left Xu Province to Liu Bei who now had a land of his own. This left Cao-Cao infuriated as he had been seeking revenge on Tao Qian for the murder of his father, but he instead focused on another issue, the Emperor had fled Changan and so he acted quickly and now had the Emperor in his home base of Xuchang, he now had the ability to act with Imperial authority and was quickly able to use this power to overwhelm and destroy Li Jue and Guo Si. Meanwhile Yuan Shao had taken over Qing Province and was now attacking Bing Province, attempting to grow his power before finishing his war with Gongsun Zan. It was in this time period that something would happen, something that would change things for the Sun family forever.
XXXXX
'That no good wretch, I did all that for him and he shows me such disrespect.' Sun Ce thought angrily as he made his way back to his chambers.
He had just left a feast that Yuan Shu was holding, ostensibly in Sun Ce's honour for finally conquering the last castle in the Huainan region that was holding out against Yuan Shu's control. Several of Yuan Shu's officers had led attacks against the castle, only for each siege to be repelled. Sun Ce however had conquered it within a day. Instead of the welcome he expected at the feast, he was treated as a mere guest, denied the place of honour and worse, Yuan Shu took credit for his exploits by insisting it was his strategies which Sun Ce had followed which allowed his success. It had been enough for Sun Ce who had unobtrusively left as early as he could.
He shook his head as he approached his quarters. 'All this time, he's just using me and treats me that way and thinks he can get away with it. This is no life for me, but what am I supposed to even do about it?'
Bowing his head he reached the door and was about to go in.
"My Lord."
He groaned and turned to the man. "Zhu Zhi, I'm sorry, but I can't talk right now."
Zhu Zhi bowed and continued however. "Please my Lord, we are well aware of the difficulties you are having, we are here to help."
"What are you talking about?" Sun Ce asked. "What do you mean, we?"
Zhu Zhi gestured into the room and Sun Ce looked and was surprised to see Huang Gai, Han Dang and Cheng Pu waiting for him, now he was curious, and perhaps a little bit hopeful.
It was late at night now and Sun Ce stood by the window, looking out and considering.
"You see my Lord, we are here as always for you." Huang Gai said. "We serve the Sun family, but we need a place of our own, our own land."
Han Dang nodded. "We may have lost Changsha but that was in Jing Province, that wasn't our home."
"Exactly, we are of Wu, the lands of Yang Province." Cheng Pu agreed. "You see...we have a land to call our own, we simply need to reclaim it."
"But to do that, we'd need our own army, we don't have any troops and it's not like we have the means to raise an army or even leave. Not without Yuan Shu having something to say about it, or do about it." Sun Ce noted to himself worriedly.
"That is something I've been thinking about." Zhu Zhi remarked. "We all know the sort of man Yuan Shu is, so my Lord, why not ask him to let you borrow troops to reclaim Yang Province, under the belief of course that you're doing it on his behalf...and offer up the Imperial Seal as collateral."
Sun Ce turned sharply. "The seal, why should I...how will this even work?"
"The seal might as well of contributed to your father's death and Yuan Shu covets the jewel." Zhu Zhi explained. "So why not offer it to him and he's sure to let you have those troops, by the time you're done you'll have Yang Province and your own army at your disposal, then you can stand on your own and break ties with Yuan Shu at last."
Sun Ce smirked, the others all smiled, seeing the old fire returning to their young lord, it was certain now he was going to carry out this plan, they had their new goal, their new fire, to reclaim their homelands of Wu and for the Sun family to rise again.
End of chapter, hope you enjoyed it, read and review please.
