Chapter One – New Arrival.

'Well, I'm here,' Rina said as she looked around the rather run-down farm. It was far from picture perfect but to her in this moment it was paradise. She looked around, aware that Robin was next to her doing the same. 'It needs some work,' she said honestly as Robin nodded.

'A bit of dedication and you'll have this place running in no time, there's good soil under all that debris,' she agreed. Robin gave Rina a sidelong glance; she was in her early twenties, with long dark hair that had been woven in a braid and a tall stature for a woman. It was clear that she had never performed a day's hard labour in her life. 'I'm sure the work will be exhausting but worth it in the end,' she added.

Rina smiled and breathed in deeply, 'I like to think that I'm ready for whatever it brings. I need this to work out,' she admitted more to herself than Robin. The carpenter was about to question what she meant by what she said but Mayor Lewis appeared from the cottage. The three of them shared a brief conversation before he departed, Robin stuck around for a bit longer, giving her a quick chat of the tools that were provided. 'Thanks, Robin. It's nice to know people around here are so kind.'

'We look after one another here,' she said softly and placed a hand on Rina's shoulder. 'Look, I have to be honest. Your father got in contact with me when he found out you were coming-'

Rina sighed and shook her head, 'Robin, there's no need. I don't want to talk about him. Just… please, whatever he asked or said to you, disregard it. I don't want my new life here to be some sort of farce. I am doing this for me, I will do the work needed and find my own path,' she said as she looked up at the cottage. 'I can do this, whatever he thinks.'

Robin nodded and squeezed her shoulder, 'fair enough. If you want to know, you only have to ask. Other than that, don't be a stranger. I have kids around your age if you want to try to be friends, they're nice even if one is a bit of a grumpy recluse. I will mention that around night-time there tends to be monsters around so please, be on guard after the sun sets.' Rina picked up her bags and grins at Robin. 'Have fun settling in!' She added as the young woman walks to the cottage door.

There was nothing much more Robin could do or say so she made her way back home while Rina set up her new life inside the worn house. 'Okay, this is me,' Rina said to herself as she looked around. There was a bed, chimney and table, even an old-style TV; nothing compared to what she had been used to but it would do. Rina pulled out a photo frame from her suitcase and placed it on the table. Inside was a picture of herself when she was younger and her mother, Rina was practically a copy of her mother. 'I'm going to make you proud, mama,' she whispered as she touched the photo lovingly. 'I'll show everyone what I can really do.'

The next day Rina had gotten dressed and cleared away some of the debris in her fields before making her way up the back path towards Robin's home. The map was easy enough to follow and she was sure that it wouldn't be too early to drop by. She wanted to ask a few things, learn about some prices for a possible house renovation and see if Robin had any tips to give her. It was a cliché but Rina felt that the air was definitely cleaner in this town and she felt more alive than she ever had before. She had arrived at Robin's home and knocked on the door before letting herself in. 'Hello?' She inquired as she stepped inside. Robin was behind the counter and smiled brightly as she saw her.

'Hey! You made it! How was your first night?' She asked as she put down the catalogue she had been updating.

Rina tilted her head from side to side a couple of times as she shut the door behind her and approached the counter. 'It was… okay. There were a lot of strange noises outside and it's a little cold but other than that, totally okay,' she assured. 'I was just wondering if I could ask a few things,' she said honestly. Robin nodded and for the first time realized what Rina was wearing.

'Oh, that could not have been comfortable to work in,' she said as she looked at the pretty cotton dress that Rina wore. She leaned over the counter and saw that the shoes she had on weren't really suitable either. 'Is that all you have?' She whispered, not wanting to embarrass Rina. Rina smiled, a little embarrassed regardless, Robin exuded 'mum energy' and she knew that the older woman wasn't being nasty.

Rina cleared her throat and nodded, 'yeah… until I'm able to make clothes for myself or earn some money, they'll have to do for now,' she admitted. 'Father didn't really let me wear anything other than this sort of thing and hey, it works at a bare minimum. Though I did catch my knees a couple of times pulling out a rather stubborn weed,' she said.

'We can't have that,' Robin said simply.

'Honestly, I'll make do-' Rina attempted to disarm the look in the woman's eyes and failed horribly.

'You're about the same size as me, I've got some jeans you can have and I'm sure we've got some boots and shirts lying around that you can adjust,' Robin said as she waves at Rina to follow her. 'You'll need some gloves too, otherwise you'll just tear your hands apart,' she added.

'Really there's no need-!'

'Rina, please, allow me this or I'll just be worrying about you the whole time. Go sit in the kitchen and help yourself while I gather a few bits,' Robin commanded. Rina looked like she was going to protest again but gave up and slunk down the hallway. Robin nodded and began to walk down towards the basement. She knocked on the door and then entered without waiting. 'Sebby, do you have any clothes you're not wanting?' She asked as she walked over to his wardrobe. There was a groan from the lump lying in bed and a muffled reply. 'I'm looking for some stuff for the new farmer that moved into Tyrell Farm, they're a little underprepared for the work needed.'

Sebastian finally sat up and rubbed his eyes, 'who goes to work on a farm and doesn't have the right shit?' He asked as he rolled his eyes. Robin gave him a look for his use of bad language but doesn't say anything and Sebastian doesn't respond to the glare. He swung his legs off the edge of the bed and yawned, scratching his head.

'Some people don't have the luxury of thinking ahead,' Robin said bluntly. 'Now, are you still wearing this?' She asked holding up a shirt that had a nice black and blue check pattern. Sebastian glanced up and shook his head. Robin nodded and chose a few more pieces like it. 'Can you go make some coffee? Ask Rina what shoe size she is as well, we might have some of your old pairs from your teenage years that'll fit her,' Robin mused.

Sebastian knew better than to complain or question, though to be honest it wasn't something he would really fuss about. He nodded and after he had stretched, he wandered upstairs towards the kitchen where he found Maru talking to a woman of a similar age. The hem of her dress was filthy and the slipper like shoes she wore had frayed around the toes. Her arms had scratches up past her elbows and her hands were buried in her lap. 'Morning,' he said simply as he walked over to the kettle.

Maru bounced in her seat. 'Seb! Hey, look, this is Rina. She's just moved into the old farm down the road! Isn't it great? We've been talking about what kinds of crops she could grow this season!' Rina smiled softly as she looked at Robin's son. He wore a black t-shirt and a pair of dark tracksuit bottoms; it was clear that he had just woken up. The bed head was impressive. 'You're up early,' Maru added with a raised brow.

He grunted in reply and pulled out a couple of mugs before turning to Rina. 'Want coffee?' He asked simply not giving Maru's snide comment a reply.

'I wouldn't want to impose,' Rina said quickly, it was clear that she was feeling uncomfortable.

'Looks like you're going to be wearing half my wardrobe with the warpath my mother is on, so what more is coffee? I might as well be your hireling,' he said with a slight smirk. Maru began to scold him but he ignored her as he saw the flicker of amusement cross Rina's features. She already knew that he was teasing so that was a good start to a friendship.

Rina calmed Maru down by touching her arm lightly and turned her attention back to Sebastian, 'forgive my audacity,' she said with a hint of playfulness. 'I'll have a black coffee, no sugar,' Rina said bluntly. Sebastian chuckled lightly and went ahead, pulling out another mug.

Maru huffed and rolled her eyes at her half brother before speaking to Rina once more. 'So, you were saying that you were thinking about turnips? That you got some seeds to plant?'

'Yeah, but I needed an actual planting field, hence all the debris removal. Though I have been saving what I can from the wood and stone that I've cleared,' she said conversationally. A mug of coffee was placed in front of her and she looked up, 'thank you, Sebastian,' she added. He nodded and passed Maru her own before picking up one he had made for his mum and his own and walking out the kitchen. The new farmer may be a little short sighted when it came to her future but something told him that there was more to her than what met the eye. In the long run it wouldn't matter what she was like, he wasn't going to be in this town any much longer, another year of saving and he'd be gone.

Rina finally left with a massive bag of clothing, she had promised to pay Robin and her family back for the clothes and shoes but Robin wouldn't hear anything about it. She stood outside the door and exhaled heavily, what she thought would take half an hour had almost taken the entire day. Robin had fussed about her shoe size and how Sebastian was supposed to have asked her but had clearly forgotten.

'Thank Yoba for that,' she muttered. She didn't want to seem ungrateful but it had taken a lot out of her. She wasn't used to people like Robin and her family. Maru was sweet and had a curiosity about everything, an endearing trait though she could see how some might find it annoying. Rina was knocked out her reverie as the garage door opened. She jumped at the noise of it lifting up.

Sebastian looked over at her as she let out a small squeal of surprise. 'Sorry,' he said simply. 'Didn't expect anyone to be outside,' he admitted.

'No harm done,' she replied as she picked up the bag she had briefly put down. 'I'm sorry about this morning, I didn't come over for this, I just wanted to ask some questions that's all,' she said as he looked at her. 'Thankyou again, it's kind of you to let me have these,' she looked into the bag and saw the vast assortment inside.

He shrugged in reply, 'it's not like I was wearing them,' he said. 'Besides, you need them. You're not going to get far on the farm if you keep hurting yourself,' he motioned to her hands. A blush erupted on Rina's cheeks and she tactfully moved her hands and the bag behind her back. 'Did my mum find everything she wanted to give you?' He asked.

She cleared her throat and shrugged a shoulder in response. 'Everything apart from gloves, though I can make do without those. I'll get a few blisters but it's not the end of the world.' Sebastian raised a brow and shook his head lightly. Without waiting for her to say anymore, he walked over to a large set of metal drawers that clearly held tools and opened the bottom one. He rooted around for a moment before pulling out a set of fingerless gloves, not leather but not some sort of cotton either. A tough looking material that was dark in colour.

'Here, these are too small for me and useless when it comes to riding,' he said simply as he held them out.

'Oh really, there's no need, you've given me so much-'

'Tyrell,' he said bluntly, interrupting her protests. 'Pride will cost you everything,' he pointed out, not unkindly. His words must have resonated with her as her shoulders dropped and she gingerly reached out, taking them from his fingers gently.

'Thank you,' she whispered as she held them tightly.

He didn't say anything and simply closed the garage door behind him, leaving them outside. 'Turnips, huh?' Sebastian mused.

'I know they're not the most exciting vegetable,' Rina said quietly unable to look him in the eye.

'I wouldn't say that, I quite like turnips,' Sebastian said simply as he waved a goodbye and began to walk towards the lake in the distance. 'Take care, Tyrell,' he said as the distance between them grew.

'You too, Sebastian,' Rina replied softly, knowing that he'd only just hear her. It wasn't an issue though; her mind was already elsewhere and she knew that she had work to do.
