"How does anyone expect us to do our job?" Dee grumbled, scanning the latest memo from higher up the chain of command. "They tie our hands with red tape, then wonder why criminals are gettin' away with murder, literally, and the number of arrests and closed cases keep goin' down. Bureaucracy is outta control!"
Ryo had heard it all before, and he didn't disagree, but complaining about the way things were wasn't going to change anything.
"It sucks, I know, but there's nothing we can do about it except keep doing our job as best we can."
Dee tossed the memo onto his desk and leaned back in his chair with a huff of annoyance.
"Makes me wonder why I ever became a cop. Maybe I should'a picked some other line of work instead."
"You'd still have been at the mercy of bureaucrats; they're everywhere. At least as a cop you occasionally get to arrest one."
"There's that." Dee smirked, thinking back to the previous week when he'd arrested a minor government official on a DUI. There had been something profoundly satisfying about reading him his rights after he caused an accident. "I'd arrest all of 'em if I could."
