Although he'd been really little when she'd died and he didn't remember much about her, Bikky knew his mom had been a Black woman. The few pictures he had of her showed she was beautiful: tall as his dad, slim, with warm, dark brown eyes, and a gentle smile. His dad had been a white guy though, blond and blue eyed, a complete contrast to Bikky's mom, and between them they'd made a son.
Bikky looked in the mirror and sighed at what he saw there. He wasn't Black, and he wasn't White, his skin was a sort of milky coffee color, and if that wasn't bad enough, he'd inherited his dad's blond hair and blue eyes. There wasn't another kid in school that looked anything like Victor Goldman. The other mixed-race kids all had dark hair and brown eyes.
Everywhere he went, people stared at him, and the kids in school made fun of him. He hated his hair, wished he could dye it black, or maybe have it all cut off, but then he'd be hit by one of the few memories he had of his mom, brushing his long, pale hair and telling him how much she loved it, how much she loved HIM, and that she wished she had such beautiful hair. He didn't want to hurt her by cutting and dying it, but it made him feel so out of place.
He didn't fit in anywhere, not with the Black kids or the White kids; he couldn't claim to belong to either culture, just kind of hovered somewhere in between.
Then his dad had been killed and Ryo had taken him in. Ryo Maclean, half White, half Japanese, a fellow misfit.
"We're lucky, Biks; we each belong to two cultures, so we have double the heritage to explore. Be proud of who you are and don't ever let anyone put you down, not for the color of your skin or for any other reason. You're a part of both your parents, and they loved you; never forget that."
Bikky smiled. "Thanks, Ryo." He wouldn't forget.
