In the estate, things were not going well. The Loud Kids have been under a dark cloud of wallowing in self pity. We were watching TV.

News Reporter: The top story this morning is that Nico Chan once again foiled a bank robbery. Today makes at least half a dozen times Nico has done the job we used to depend on J.D. Knudson and the Loud Kids for. It leaves this reporter wondering... are J.D. and the Loud Kids washed up?

Nico: (to me) I just want you to know that I didn't mean to make you look bad.

Me: No worries buddy. You're doing a great job. I just have to help all the time around the house with my family.

Nico: Good.

Later as the days went by, things were not getting any better for the Loud Kids. As I meditated under the Willow Tree, I was getting a strange disturbance.

Me: Uh oh.

Nerri: What's wrong J.D.?

Me: My friends have been under a lot of distress lately. Something is causing them to become lost and sad.

Nerri: Hmm. Maybe they went to go do a little soul-searching.

Me: That could probably be the case.

I went into the house.

Me: Hey Nico.

Nico: Hey man. Have a good meditation?

Me: Yep. But I can't help but show concern for my friends.

Nico: I know. Something is wrong with the Loud kids.

The doorbell rang.

Nico: I'll get that.

Nico went and answered the door and it was Dark Spicer.

Nico: Oh hey Dark Spicer.

Dark Spicer: Hey, guys. (notices certain people missing) Where are Lincoln and his sisters?

May: (sighs) They're not here. Again.

Dark Spicer: Man, it's been like this for the last week. Me and the others have been trying out different crimes like bank robberies to get their attention. But they still won't show up. Not a good sign if you ask me.

Maria: Well, they've got their reasons.

Me: I know. Something got to them and we don't know what.

That's when Hans Rotwood and Brad Morton walked up to us.

Hans Rotwood: (smirks) If you ask me, the reason that Mr. Loud and his sisters aren't here is because they're cowards.

Me: Oh great. Not you two douchebags again.

Brad Morton: (laughs) Yeah! They can't handle the criticism on the news and the fact that Chan seems to be getting better at them in hero stuff.

Nico: Hey! Lincoln and his sisters aren't cowards! And we can prove it! Come on, guys.

With that, we stormed off. Leaving Dark Spicer alone with Morton and Rotwood.

Dark Spicer: I can't believe it.

Rotwood: What? That the Loud Children are cowards and that the rest of Team Loud Phoenix Storm won't admit it?

Morton: (smirks) You better believe it.

Dark Spicer: There's that. And I can't believe I'm talking to assholes like you! (storms off as well)

We found the Loud Kids minus Laney, Liberty, Lyra, Lee and Lila on the hill where I did my soul-searching and they were sad and upset.

Me: Guys!

Nico: Guys what's wrong?

May: Why are you all upset?

Lori: Why should you care?

Nico: Look, we've been keeping our mouths shut and making excuses for you guys. But everyone's noticed that you guys have been skipping out on missions and not going out for the last week. Even Dark Spicer.

May: We don't understand. What's your problem?

Lola: (glares at us) Let us make this clear for you guys and everyone else, ok? We're done.

Maria: What's that supposed to mean?

Me: Yeah what's gotten into you?

Lincoln: It means we're leaving Team Loud Phoenix Storm!

We gasped.

Maria: You guys are quitting the team?!

Lori: We're not quitting the family. But we're literally staying here now. Where no one's going to criticise us.

Me: Guys you can't! We're a team and a family!

May: You're seriously never going out again because of you guys hating the criticism on the news?

Lynn: (sighs) I don't know, May. We're not used to people criticising us. And not to mention that the only way for us to gain Super Angel forms is for us to let our emotions out. But if we do that, we get reckless and risk hurting people. Maybe it's a sign for us to retire and leave the hero work to you guys from now on.

Me: You guys can't be serious!

Nico: (to the other Loud Kids) Do the rest of you feel the same way?

Loud Kids: YES!

Lincoln: And if you stop us we'll kill you!

Me: Guys you're overreacting. Something has made you become like this.

Nico: That's right.

Vince: Yeah we are a team and a family.

Lori: I don't care!

Leni: Me neither!

Me: We'll be back.

We went and huddled.

Me: These guys are stubborn.

Nico: Yeah what are we gonna do?

Qin: It's gonna be like moving a donkey off a railroad track.

Me: Yeah.

But then we heard a voice.

?: J.D., Nico.

We saw storm clouds come in and a figure appeared. It was a woman that looked just like Lucy.

Nico: Lucy?

Me: Wait a second. I remember seeing you in a photo that Lucy showed me. You're the Loud Kids great grandmother Harriett Loud.

Harriett Loud: That's right. It's a pleasure to meet you J.D. Lucy told me so much about you all.

Me: I can tell.

Nico: Wow! You're their great grandmother Harriett? You look so much like Lucy.

Harriett Loud: I sure do.

Nico: Boy J.D. you weren't kidding when you said that Harriett looked so much like Lucy. The resemblance is completely uncanny.

Me: And she was also a master of the mystic arts like me.

Nico: (to Great Grandma Harriet) Good luck trying to talk to them. They're so stubborn it's like talking to a brick wall.

Harriett Loud: I will try.

She went over to the Loud Kids.

Harriett: Lincoln and kids.

They looked up and saw her

Lincoln: Whoa Lucy is that you?

Lucy Loud: No I'm right here.

Harriett: [She appears in the sky as a group of stars] Hello Lincoln. Hello girls.

Lincoln: Wait a minute I've seen you from a photo that Lucy showed me. Then that means-

Lucy Loud: Gasp!

Harriett: Yes everyone I am your Great Grandmother Harriett.

Lincoln: But why are you here?

Harriett: I been watching what you were going through and I was disgusted by how people are treating you these days because of people's smugness.

Lori: They won't leave us alone and they are making a total mockery of us.

Luna: It's really hurtful dudes.

Luan: They are ruining us.

Harriett: You must remember who you all are. You have forgotten your true family.

Lily: No. How could we?

Harriet: You have forgotten who you all are and so have forgotten who your true family is. Look inside yourselves, all of you. You all are more than what you have become. You must stand up and face your problems head on with the people who have judged you.

Lincoln: How can we stop them? We're not the ones who we used to be.

Harriett: [Now fully formed in the sky] Remember who you all are. You are my great grandchildren, 11 beloved daughters and 1 son and a caring brother. Remember who you are.

Lori: But how? We feel like we're losing who we are.

Harriett: You must remember who you are: great protectors of the world and friends to all.

Lincoln: I'm sorry. We feel like we're losing ourselves.

Harriett: I once told your grandfather that I was most proud of one thing: having you as my child.

Lynn: That was a long time ago.

Harriett: No Lynn. That is forever and always will be.

She started fading away.

Lincoln: Please! Don't leave us!

Harriett: I've never left you all and never will. (Fading) Remember who you all are. (Fades) Remember.

Me: So who are all of you?

Lori: I am Lori Loud, the Eldest child and master of wind in Team Loud Phoenix Storm!

Leni: I am Leni Loud, 2nd borne and master of Gravity in Team Loud Phoenix Storm!

Luna: I am Luna Loud, 3rd borne and master of music and water in Team Loud Phoenix Storm!

Luan: I am Luan Loud, 4th borne and master of light and comedy in Team Loud Phoenix Storm!

We cheered for them!

May: Do you guys feel better now?

Lori: Much better May.

Luna: I don't know what we were thinking.

Luan: Yeah how can we let ourselves get clouded like that.

Lynn: Yeah.

Me: Welcome back guys.

Lily: Thanks J.D.

We went back home.

Later the U.S.S. Valorous Phoenix was flying through the endless void of space.

Me: Captain's Log, Stardate 2827.8: We are en route to another planet located 40 light-years away from Earth and we were gonna go there to explore this strange amazing planet.

Maria: What planet are we visiting this time?

Me: It's a really cool one. It's an Earth-light planet in orbit close to a red dwarf star.

Lisa Loud: Very interesting world.

Laney: Very interesting world.

Lisa Loud: We have arrived.

Me: On screen.

We arrived at the planet and it was the hypothetical planet Aurelia.

Aurelia is a hypothetical terrestrial planet orbiting around a red dwarf star. Aurelia's size is roughly the same of Earth's, and like Earth, Aurelia is a world with lots of surface water and a wide variety of native organisms. The planet is not home to any sapient species, though. Aurelia is tidally locked to its star, meaning that one half of the planet permanently faces the star, while the other side is in eternal darkness. As a result, the day side of Aurelia is under a giant, never-ending hurricane and violent rainstorms; and on the night side the ocean is frozen and a perpetual ice age takes place.

Galaxy: Milky Way

System: Aurelia System

Class: Terrestrial

Age: 4,700,000,000 years old (4.7 billion)

Complex life is only found on the habitable zone between the two. On this area, swamps and wetlands are the primary terrain. All life on Aurelia is carbon-based. Covering much of the habitable terrain are plant-like animals called Stinger Fans. Eating the roots of the Stinger Fans but also giving living space are the Mudpods. Mudpods are small creatures that are amphibious. They are the main prey for Gulphogs. Gulphogs are large ostrich-like predators that have a hierarhichal structure. The most dangerous known animal is the Hysteria. The animal itself is incredibly small but can group into large colonies that poison, digest and grow breeding spores out of animals.

Background

The scientists on the project theorized that aiming the TPF at a red dwarf star might yield the best opportunities for seeing smaller planets. Due to the slow rate at which they burn hydrogen, red dwarfs have an enormous estimated lifespan; allowing plenty of time for life to evolve on surrounding planets. Also, red dwarves are very common in the universe. Therefore, if they support habitable planets, it substantially increases the chances of finding life in the universe. However, being much dimmer than other stars, it will be harder to detect planetary systems around them. In addition, lower gravity would limit the potential size of a system. The discovery of Gliese 581 g raises hopes of finding more red dwarf systems, including potentially habitable ones.

Tidal lockEdit

However, the dwarf's smaller nature and feeble heat/light output would mean that such a planet would need to be particularly close to the star's surface. The cost of such an orbit would be that an Earth-sized body would become tidally locked. When this happens, the object presents the same face to its parent at all times as it orbits, just as the Moon does with the Earth (more technically, one sidereal day is exactly equal to one year for the orbiting body).

Traditional theories

Traditional scientific theories proposed that such a tidally locked planet might be incapable of holding on to an atmosphere. Having such a slow rotation would weaken the magnetic effect that protects the atmosphere from being blown away by solar wind (see Rare Earth hypothesis).

Traditional assumptions tested

Nonetheless, the scientists employed by the programme decided to test the traditional assumptions for such a planet and start a model out for it from a proplyd through to its eventual death. Their estimations suggested such a planet could indeed hold on to its atmosphere, although with freakishly unusual results by Earth standards. Aurelia would be gravitationally locked to its star (a red dwarf). Due to this, Aurelia would not have seasons or a day-night cycle, as half of Aurelia would be in perpetual darkness and would be in a permanent ice age. The other half would contain a giant, unending hurricane with permanent torrential rain at the point directly opposite the local star. In between these two zones would be a place suitable for life.

This hurricane could perhaps generate enormous waves in the ocean and the waves would migrate outwards. Oceanographers should test how high these waves would be in the postulated nearby swamps and delta area. They would be wind driven waves and would not reach from the top of an ocean to the bottom like a Tsunami. Nonetheless, waves as big and as devastating as those that humans call freak waves might be regular.[citation needed] Simple bacterial and algal life would not be threatened.

Continued theories

The theorizations continued, and assuming that there was land in this habitable zone, it would be likely to form large networks of river deltas and swampland, due to rain runoff from the nearby storm.

At the far end of assumptions about Aurelia were attempts to construct lifeforms based on Earthly evolutionary models and how ecosystems might develop. The scientists assumptions included the idea that the long life of a red dwarf allows for evolution to fine tune any ecosystem on the planet. The scientists involved in the project hypothesized that the vast majority, if not all, of extra-solar biology will be carbon based.

This assumption is often referred to by critics as carbon chauvinism, as it may be possible for life to form that is not based on carbon.

From this carbon-based hypothesis the scientific team assumed some form of staple photosynthesizing animal/plant combination would be the principal autotroph. They decided upon a plant-like creature called a Stinger Fan. It has five hearts and limited mobility. Its fan-like leaves trap the red dwarf star's energy to produce sugars. Its hearts pump them around its body.

Feeding upon the Stinger Fans are six-legged semi-amphibious creatures called Mudpods, based somewhat upon beavers. They use their long, continually growing thumb claws to cut down a Stinger Fan and dam the river systems, creating artificial lagoons and swamps which provide safety from predators. Upon that animal, a large emu-like carnivore, a Gulphog, is the main predator. These 2 meter tall carnivores live socially in packs, and display promising signs of intelligence. Finally, there is a second semi-amphibious creature called the Hysteria - a cross between a plague of tadpoles and piranha. These tiny, orange creatures can collect together (in a manner similar to slime molds) and form one huge super-organism, moving together up banks to paralyze and consume other animals. Scabian Slugs that live by the water can fall victim to the Hysteria, but it can take something as large as a Gulphog to satisfy them.

The planet's ecosystem suffers from a number of particular peculiarities, most notably evolutionary quirks to allow all living organisms to detect and avoid solar flares. Red dwarf stars are unstable and eject frequent solar flares. Such intense ultraviolet radiation is deadly to all carbon-based life forms as it breaks down the atomic bonds formed by organic compounds. The Gulphogs have adapted by having an ultraviolet light sensitive eye on top of their heads. Stinger Fans fold up to protect themselves. Mudpods have sensitive backs that can sense the ultraviolet rays. The Hysteria's adaption is unknown. However, the flare stage might only be when the red dwarfs are relatively young.

Nico: Wow! This planet is interesting.

Laney: Very interesting.

Me: This is the planet Aurelia. I've seen this planet in a documentary.

Lincoln: Wow! Amazing!

Laney: It says here that the planet is Tidally Locked. One side is always facing the red dwarf star and the other is in darkness and frozen in ice.

Lincoln: So it doesn't rotate at all?

Laney: Not at all.

Me: You guys will see how interesting this planet is when we land.

We landed on one of the continents and we got out.

Me: (Inhales) The air is like Earth.

Nico: Wow! Look at this planet.

Horsea: This planet is amazing!

Maria: It sure is. Wow.

Carmen: This is incredible!

Lisa Simpson: It sure is amazing.

Lincoln: It's amazing. It's so much like Earth here.

Nico: But look at the Red Dwarf star.

We saw that the Red Dwarf Star was never moving.

Me: Because this planet is tidally locked and doesn't rotate at all, the Red Dwarf Star here is always shining down. It's perpetual daylight here.

Lincoln: Wow.

Lola: Incredible.

Spiderman: Does anyone live here?

Me: Nope. Just the animals here on this planet.

We went into the strange forests on the lagoons and we saw that the trees looked animal like. They were the Stingerfan Forests.

The Stingerfans are half flora, half fauna life forms native to planet Aurelia. They look like plants, but their roots have muscles and act like slow moving tentacles. The Stingerfans also have five hearts. But they do utilize photosynthesis and multiply by growing young Stingerfans from the adults' tentacles.

In few words, Stingerfans are photosynthetic autotrophic fauna native to Aurelia that reproduce by budding like hydra do on earth. The Stingerfans close their fans during a solar flare, and reopen them when the flare subsides.

Their roots are pierced and eaten by mudpods, who fell their tall bodies to build dams. Those same fallen Stingerfans also provide shelter to Gulphogs who hide from the searing heat of the solar flares.

Lori: Wow. What kind of trees are these?

Me: These are not trees Lori. These are called the Stingerfans.

Shanan: They are animals that look like plants. But they gather sunlight from the Red Dwarf Star and photosynthesis to feed from sugar.

Lana: Wow.

Lily: This is amazing.

We heard their hearts beating.

Lynn: What's that noise?

Shanan: That's their heartbeats.

Lola: They are big hearts in them.

Shanan: They have 5 hearts in them that pump the nutrients they need.

Nico: Like plants on Earth.

Me: Exactly.

We saw them move incredibly slowly across the mud.

Linka: They sure move slowly.

Me: Yep.

We then saw a huge ostrich-like creature coming and it was a huge 16 foot creature. It was a huge creature called the GULPHOG!

The Gulphog is a carnivorous creature native to Aurelia.

Characteristics

The Gulphog is an Aurelian carnivore that vaguely resembles an Earth ostrich, which eat Mudpods. Gulphogs are 4.5 metres tall and weigh 500 kilograms, making them the largest predators on Aurelia. Gulphogs possess a sophisticated social and hierarchical structure with a dominant male surrounded by multiple females and their young with maybe a few younger males allowed to stay with the pack. They have a early warning system for the solar flares that erupt from Aurelia's sun in the form of a third eye on top of the head, giving the Gulphog's enough time to take cover behind the Stingerfans. The parent Gulphogs educate their young and protect them with great care. They use their long teeth to pick up vibrations made by the Mudpod's felling the Stingerfans to make dams. Their only known predator is the Hysteria. There is a possibility due to their social nature and ability to nurture the clan's young, the Gulphog might evolve into a sapient species.

Lincoln: Wow! What is that?

Shanan: That's the Gulphog. It's the largest carnivorous creature here on Aurelia.

Nico: It's huge.

Lily: It's amazing.

Eliza: I've never seen a creature like this.

Naruto: Amazing.

Me: And the cool part is that they live in clan's like some of our people.

Sakura Haruno: How do they hunt?

Me: They put their teeth in the ground and feel the vibrations in the ground to find their favorite prey: Mudpods.

I pointed to something in the beaches of the lagoons and we saw a strange amphibious creature called the Mudpod.

The Mudpod is a 1 meter long amphibious creature that inhabits the swamps of Aurelia. They have three pairs of legs and a long tail for swimming. Their eyestalks allow them to watch for predators above the water surface. They also have poisonus spines for defense.

Mudpods are centrally essential animals. They build dams that block rivers and create deltas for the wildlife to prosper. They feed on Stinger Fans and kill many, but also make room for the new generation. Mudpods are hunted by Gulphogs, which hunt them in groups. Mudpods have no warning of solar flares and their only defense is to crawl into their burrows.

Lana: Wow! They look like frogs.

Lola: They sure do.

Lori: Amazing!

Leni: What do they eat?

Me: The Stingerfans. They use a claw on its upper left foot to cut the fan out and knock it down.

Lucy Loud: Wow.

But then my device beeped in a warning beep.

Me: Uh oh. I forgot to tell you guys that all Red Dwarf Stars are powerful flare stars and they happen without warning and can cover the whole planet within minutes.

Lincoln: Wow.

A powerful flare blasted the planet and Lucy Loud formed a force field of darkness and it protected us as the fans of the Stingerfans closed and it came in full force and it was massively intense and more. The light from the Red Dwarf Star was incredibly intense and more. After 3 minutes the flare subsided and life returned to normal. The force field vanished.

Me: Wow. That was intense.

Laney: It sure was. And I don't think that the strongest sunscreen would stop that.

Lincoln: Red Dwarf stars are that dangerous?

Me: They are. Red Dwarves are volatile stars and they are much different than our sun. One difference is their massive life span. Our sun is a class G star and it will only last for 10 billion years.

Lori: So our sun is over 5 billion years old now.

Me: Right. Red Dwarf Stars last 100 times longer than our sun will. They can last up to 500 billion to 1 trillion years.

Everyone: WOW!

Nico: That's incredible. And the reason for that is because they burn less fuel than our sun.

Me: Exactly. Red Dwarf Stars are class M stars and they burn much less fuel which makes them last longer. Stars like those of Class O or B will burn for only a few million years.

Lincoln: Whoa!

Lucy Loud: That's amazing.

Me: But the deadliest lifeform we have yet to see.

We went to the edge of the lagoon and we saw something moving in the water.

Laney: Something is moving in the water.

Lola: I don't see anything.

Lincoln: I see something. It looks like strange orange mist.

We saw a huge swarm of microscopic predators called HYSTERIA!

The Hysterias are microscopic predators living in big swarms. They look like tadpoles with big teeth, but as a group they appear as a yellow current.

Biology

Living in the waters of the big Stingerfan-forests of Aurelia they communicate chemically and act perfectly together. A Hysteria-Swarm is able to kill and eat everything, from a Mudpod to a Stingerfan, even a Gulphog, because the swarm acts like one organism. They kill their prey by injecting them with neurotoxins and consuming the corpse.

In the cases of larger prey such as Gulphogs, they swarm up to land and bite into the prey's foot. After consuming the prey's body and innards, the Hysteria-Swarm builds itself into a mushroom that bursts into eggs that hatch into more Hysterias.

Shanan: Whoa those are the Hysteria!

Linka: Yikes I remember using a technique for them. They are the deadliest predators I've seen when I used the technique for them.

Me: They are terrifying.

Lana: They sure are.

Lily: They're heading for a pair of Gulphog's fighting.

We saw the Gulphog's fighting like deer and rams do.

Nico: They're fighting like deer and rams.

Lincoln: They sure are.

Linka: But watch.

We saw the baby move away and the Hysteria mass crawl onto land and it got onto the Gulphog's foot and it screamed in pain as they burrowed into it and poisoned it. It died in an instant. We saw it consume the Gulphog's body and organs until it was nothing but bones. Then we saw a mushroom grow out of it and burst open and it spread eggs all over.

Me: WHOA!

Lori: OH That is literally disgusting!

Laney: But that's life and death for you.

Lucy Loud: Yep.

Luan: Scary but cool.

Me: Lets head home.

We went home and we had seen an awesome planet.

THE END
