Seeing the way Dee looked at Ryo was like a knife to JJ's heart. Dee had never looked at him that way, not even on those rare occasions when he was being sympathetic, like after JJ's friend Max Fork went off the rails, trying to steal drugs from the precinct's evidence locker.
JJ couldn't even claim that Ryo, who was sort of almost a friend, had stabbed him in the back. That wasn't in Ryo's nature, he was too kind and caring to ever be openly mean to anyone. Come to that, JJ doubted Ryo was mean to people behind their backs either. There wasn't a mean bone in his body.
No, Ryo hadn't stolen Dee away from him. It's not stealing when someone takes something that never belonged to the other person in the first place, and JJ understood now that Dee had never been his to lose. He just hadn't wanted to see or accept that, but now he had no choice. Dee had won his heart's desire, while JJ had lost his. He felt the knife twist, digging a little deeper, and closed his eyes against the pain, trying to breathe through it, his throat and chest constricted by tears he refused to cry.
What good would it do him to wallow in self-pity anyway? The only person he could blame in all this was himself. He'd developed a crush on a handsome man who'd been nice to him once, and instead of accepting that his crush didn't feel the same way, he'd deluded himself into believing he could win Dee's heart if he just tried hard enough.
If there was indeed a knife in his heart, then he was the one who'd put it there, and he probably deserved it. Given time, the wound would heal.
