Dee grinned proudly as he looked at the slightly lopsided object sitting on the cooling tray. Yes, it had risen more at one side than the other, and okay, so it was slightly singed at the edges, but it had come out of the baking tin in one piece, and it was suitably light and fluffy.

"Whaddaya think? Way better than my first attempt at a sponge cake, right?"

Ryo nodded. "Your baking skills are coming along really well."

"I did what you said, greased the tin thoroughly all over so it didn't stick. It's sorta wonky though."

"Beating the mixture a bit longer next time ought to fix that. You did use self-raising flour, didn't you?"

"Yep, but the phone rang when I was doin' the mixin', had to put it down for a few minutes. Probably should'a given it another go before pourin' it into the tin, but it looked smooth, and the light had gone out on the oven, so I wanted to get in as quick as possible. I'll know better next time."

"I'll make a baker of you yet. Before long you'll be bringing cakes to work."

"Nah." Dee grinned. "Let 'em bake their own."
