It was the tail end of summer and Dee was already wishing the heat would come back, even though he'd spent much of the past few months complaining that it was too hot. Today there was a brisk wind coming from the north, and down by the river, away from the protection afforded by buildings, it was cutting through his clothing like a knife.
Hunching his shoulders, he shivered; the sun had slipped behind a bank of cloud, and he had a sinking feeling that it would be raining before he and Ryo made it back to their car.
"You should've brought your jacket."
Dee threw a half-hearted glare at his lover. "Didn't think I'd need it. Shouldn't be this cold in September." He glanced up at where the sun should be. "I was plenty warm enough earlier.
"Weather changes, Dee; just because the day started out sunny and warm doesn't mean it's gonna stay that way. The forecast this morning said it might rain, and we do need it. Everywhere's so dry."
"Yeah, I know. Just hope it holds off a bit longer. Damn, that wind's got teeth!" Dee rubbed at his arms through his shirtsleeves.
"The crime scene team will be here in a few minutes and then we can leave," Ryo reminded his partner. The coroner had already left with the body.
"Can't be soon enough for me."
"Look on the bright side; at least our missing body showed up. It gives us a bit more to work with. We're lucky it got caught up on the rocks, otherwise it might never have been found."
"Yeah, lucky us," Dee grumbled. "The murderer just tossed the body in the river without weighin' it down."
"Means it probably wasn't a professional hit."
"Like that makes our job any easier."
