"Of course your parents left everything to you in their will. You're their only child," Aunt Elena pointed out gently. "You know your dad didn't get along with most of our family, through no fault of his own. Frankly, I don't get along with them either; they're a bunch of bigots and hypocrites. They never approved of your parents' marriage, thought your dad being an art dealer and me being a photographer meant we didn't have proper jobs…" She trailed off, shaking her head. "Why would your dad leave them anything? They don't deserve it. They're only contesting the will because they think they have a right to a share of your parents' assets, but they're wrong."
"Maybe I should give them what they want anyway, just so they'll leave me alone."
"Don't you dare! Give them anything and they'll just keep demanding more and more until they bleed you dry, then they'll crawl back into the woodwork. They weren't there for you when your parents were killed, never even offered their condolences for your loss. Ryo, listen to me. YOU are your parents' legacy, far more than the money, or the artworks, or the house. What they left you will help you to do and be whatever you choose, and that's what they'd want. Keep what has meaning to you, sell whatever you don't need, and use the money to build a good life for yourself; that's my advice."
Ryo nodded slowly. "Okay, if you think that's best. You and Uncle Rick should have something though; I owe you for letting me live with you."
"You don't owe us anything; you're family and we love having you with us. But if you insist then there are a couple of paintings I've always been fond of, if you don't want them."
"They're yours, and anything else you want. It's not like I've got anywhere to put a load of paintings and furniture."
"You should rent a storage unit at one of the more reputable places; you can afford to, and it would keep everything safe until you have an apartment of your own."
"That's a good idea. Thanks."
"You're welcome. What about you? Any ideas for what you're going to do?"
"Yes. I've been thinking about it, and I've decided I want to join the police."
Smiling, Aunt Elena squeezed Ryo's hands. "Your parents would be so proud of you."
