"If this is a beach, where the hell is the sea?" Dee looked around him at the wide expanse of sand, but he couldn't see any sign of the ocean he'd expected to find once he and Ryo had scrambled over the dunes. "This is more like a desert, 'cept there aren't any camels."

"The tide must be out," Ryo said, staring into the distance. "A very long way out." He was long-sighted, but even he could only see a faint glitter on the horizon to mark where the land ended, and the sea began.

"Guess we can forget about swimmin', or much of anythin' else." Dee kicked at the sand with one bare foot.

"We can still take a walk, or just sit on the beach and enjoy the sunshine." Ryo didn't seem bothered by the lack of sea; apparently sand and sun were enough for him, and since his lover was happy Dee decided not to bring the mood down.

"Sure, why not? Hey, we could climb that big dune over there and sit right at the top. Maybe the sea's visible from there, and even if it's not right now, we'll be safe if the tide comes in fast. We can say it's our tropical island in a shark-infested ocean."

Ryo laughed. "You have weird ideas sometimes."

"I'm just tryin' to be positive. I mean, we drove all this way outta town tryin' to find a beach that wasn't crowded with tourists, and we found one." Dee swept one arm out to indicate the complete lack of people. "Might not be quite what we were lookin' for, but at least we don't gotta share it. Or we could keep drivin', see if we can find us someplace better."

"No, this is fine. Race you to the top!"
