Turning the pages, Ryo studied sketch after sketch of himself, his own face depicted in various media from pencil, to charcoal, pastels, and ink, and what seemed like every emotion he'd ever felt. Sadness, anger, amusement, confusion, passion, disbelief, wistfulness, there as plain to read as words on a page.
"I had no idea you'd drawn me so often."
He'd seen a few sketches Dee had done of him, had even posed occasionally, but this pad was one of several Dee had hidden from him until now.
"Yeah, well, didn't want ya thinkin' I was some kinda obsessive stalker." Dee shuffled his feet nervously.
"Like I didn't already know that." Ryo's smile showed he was only teasing. "These are amazing, Dee, although you make me look better than I do."
"Nuh uh, every one of those sketches is true to life, they're what I see when I look at ya. Maybe you see yourself differently, comes to that I guess we all do, just 'cause we're so familiar with our own faces, but I draw what I see as accurately as I can. You really are that gorgeous, even if ya don't realise it."
"Eye of the beholder?"
"Yep!" Dee grinned, relaxing now he was sure Ryo wasn't angry with him over the three sketchpads full of portraits. "Started sketching ya the day we met; don't think I'll ever stop. Every time I look at ya, I see somethin' new."
"Another wrinkle?" Ryo was laughing.
"Laugh lines," Dee corrected.
"Better than worry lines, I suppose." Ryo studied the most recent sketch. "I wish I could draw well enough to return the favor, but stick figures don't have the same impact.
That made Dee laugh. "Well, maybe you should get your camera and take a few photographic portraits. I'm very photogenic."
