Chapter 3: Snapshots

Jamie opens the door to the apartment and walks in ahead of Eddie who follows still completely fixated on the ultrasound photo in her hands.

"This is so annoying." She grumbles.

"Maybe take a break from staring at it and try again later with a fresh set of eyes." Jamie suggests as he closes the door behind his wife.

"It's bugging me!" Eddie insists "I should be able to see it!"

"And you will." Jamie promises.

"Says the guy who can see it!" Eddie tosses back.

"What do you want for dinner?" Jamie inquires as he moves to the kitchen.

"Yeah I don't care." Eddie dismisses still concentrating on the photo.

Jamie stills his movements then turns to look at his wife "Says the woman who has to be very picky about what she eats lately…"

"I'm not hungry." Eddie decides.

"Not eating is not an option." Jamie counters "You're eating for two so either you pick something, or I pick something, and if I pick something, I don't want to hear any complaining that it made you throw up."

Eddie finally looks up from the photo to glare at her husband "But its okay if what I pick makes me throw up." She tries to clarify.

"Eddie." Jamie sighs really not wanting to get in a fight with her "You need to eat. I need to eat. We BOTH need to eat."

Eddie stares at her husband a couple of seconds in silence then shifts her eyes back to the photo. She studies that a moment "I still don't see it!"

Jamie throws his hands up "Okay I'll decide."

Eddie moves to plop herself down on the couch. She tosses the photo on the coffee table then falls face first to bury her face into one of the pillows in defeat. She lets out a frustrated scream into the pillow.

Jamie scrunches his face up in displeasure "Are you trying to get the neighbors to call the cops on us?"

Sighing Eddie lifts herself up "We are the cops and they're all deaf anyway."

"True." Jamie admits "Feel better?"

"The only thing that will make me feel better is seeing my baby in that photo!"

"Eddie…" Jamie sighs.

"Stop!" Eddie demands "Stop trying to make me feel better!"

"FINE!" Jamie relents in frustration "Just sit there whining away then!"

"I am not whining!"

"Yes you are!" Jamie insists "You're whining just like Mia whines!"

"Are you calling me a child?"

"How was it that Baez put that again..." Jamie wonders "Oh right. If the whining fits!"

Eddie narrows her eyes at her husband "You know all I'm trying to do…" She states as she swipes the photo off the table to wave it in the air "Is see my baby in this photo." She adds before glancing at the photo "And a little support…" but her voice trails off as she stares at the photo "I see it." She suddenly breathes out as tears well in her eyes "Jamie!" She calls out "Come here! I see it! Oh…" she then emotionally cries "I see our baby."

Smiling, Jamie exits the kitchen and moves to sit next to his wife on the couch "It's right here isn't it?" Eddie inquires as she points at the picture.

Jamie nods "Yup, that's it. That right there is our baby."

"Oh…she's so cute." Eddie breathes out as she leans her head on her husband's shoulder.

Jamie turns his head to look at his wife "She?"

"I don't know why I said that." Eddie realizes "She could be a he but I don't care. I can actually see the baby.

"But you said she." Jamie reiterates "Do you think it's a girl?"

Eddie opens her mouth to speak "I…" But then it's like suddenly realization finally hit her "Oh my god Jamie. We're having a baby."

Jamie can't help but laugh "Um yeah. I figured you might have guessed that especially since you're the one going through all the lovely and pleasant symptoms."

"No I knew we were having a baby but now…now It's not just 'a baby', it's a little boy or a little girl. It's not some ambiguous thing. It's…it's the details."

Suddenly Jamie gets a thoughtful expression on his face "So 7 week huh." He notes as he pulls out his phone and pulls up the monthly calendar. He starts counting backwards.

"What are you doing?" Eddie curiously inquires.

"I'm trying to figure out when it was we actually conceived this kid of ours."

"Oh." Eddie notes as she moves closer to her husband to peer at his phone as well.

"Okay so seven weeks back would have been…" Jamie mutters as he finally lands on the correct week in the calendar.

They both look at it pondering when and where they were in their lives at that time.

"That's the week we had the sleep over at the house." Eddie finally realizes. "Oh my god that would actually make sense…" She laughs "We did it enough times!"

"Or…" Jamie slowly thinks "It was the night you seduced me." He declares as he can't stop the giddy smile from forming on his face.

Eddie lifts her head to look at her husband a moment before a slow blush creeps up onto her face "You think?" She questions.

"Either is likely." Jamie admits.

"I think it was at the house." Eddie declares.

"I'm going with you and that little red dress." Jamie counters "Where is that dress? You still have it right? I'm deeming that dress our get lucky dress."

Eddie bursts out laughing "Our get lucky dress?"

"Yeah, you got lucky, I certainly got lucky and if we conceived our child that night that makes that dress definitely lucky."

A little giddy pout appears on Eddie's face "Oh and you even got me flowers the next morning." She happily coos.

Jamie blows a breath of air onto his knuckles then repeatedly rakes them over his chest like he'd be shining his suit if was wearing one "Do I know how to call it or what?" He arrogantly postures.

Eddie giggles "So gallant and dashing." She muses "And looking back…" She adds a little more thoughtfully "…if that was indeed the night… very romantic and poignant." She admits.

"Yes!" Jamie declares in triumph "And if I recall that was the night you wondered if we would ever get pregnant." He chuckles.

"Oh the irony." Eddie admits "That is of course IF…" She counters "…it was indeed that night."

"It was." Jamie insists. "I know it was. Now answer my previous question – you do still have that dress right?"

"Yes, it's in the closet." Eddie replies.

"Good." Jamie accepts "When its time for child number two break that dress out again."

"Oh so I'll just put that dress on and you'll just magically knock me up again?" she laughs.

"Oh no, not just magically." Jamie disagrees "There will be a lot of fun work in there."

Eddie smiles in total amusement at her husband.

"What?" Jamie prompts.

"You're so corny." Eddie giggles.

"And you love it." Jamie arrogantly declares.

"I do. I really, really do." Eddie agrees before leaning over to give him a soft kiss but then she pulls back slightly in thought "Actually that is incorrect." She realizes causing Jamie to pull back slightly himself in order to look at her quizzically.

He watches a goofy little grin appear on her face "We do." Eddie corrects "We really, really do."

The corner's of Jamie's mouth curve upwards as well.

"I am no longer an 'I'." Eddie declares "…'I' am a 'we'."

"And we makes three." Jamie announces.

Eddie leans over and rests her head against her husband's shoulder as she once again holds up the ultrasound photo for them to look at "An army of three." She declares.

"An army of three." Jamie softly repeats.

Silence.

"Hey Jamie?" Eddie softly inquires as a thought enters her mind.

"Yeah?"

Eddie pulls back to look at her husband and suddenly she feels a bit nervous and a little unsure how to broach the subject in her mind with him.

"Eddie?" Jamie prompts at seeing her look.

"Um…" She slowly begins "I was um…" She waivers "I mean… what if…"

"Come on Eddie." Jamie finally prompts as his own nervousness starts to grown "You're kind of freaking me out here. Just say it."

"Well I was wondering if…if we…if we could maybe…tell my parents first before your family?" Eddie quietly but hopefully inquires "I mean I know I've never been big on family stuff and your family totally is…" Eddie rambles "But we've been getting closer and I just thought maybe because it would be their very first grandchild that I could do that for them… and me. I know that's selfish of me but…"

"It's not." Jamie interrupts as he offers his wife a small smile "But could I offer an alternative option to our dilemma of which side of the family to tell first?"

Eddie eyes her husband curiously "Okay…"

"How about we tell them all together?"

Eddie scrunches her face up "What do you mean like get them all together in the same place at once?"

"Yeah." Jamie confirms "I think it's time your parents came to Sunday dinner."

Eddie's eyes grow wide. "You can't be serious!"

"Oh I'm 100% serious about this." Jamie insists "Think about it Eddie, everybody finds out at the exact same time."

For a moment Eddie just blinks her eyes at her husband in shock but then she seriously ponders his suggestion and she laughs "Why not." She finally agrees "I mean if anything of importance is to happen, it happens around that dinner table. In fact, I bet I give birth at that dinner table!" she laughs out.

"Oh bite your tongue!" Jamie immediately chides but Eddie starts to run with the idea in her mind…

"Can you imagine how everyone would react?" Eddie inquires causing Jamie to start picturing it in his head as well.

"Having been through it herself…" Jamie offers "Erin would declare herself in charge – barking orders of get this! Move that!"

"Yes." Eddie agrees "Sean would look like a deer caught in headlights."

"Definitely." Jamie agrees "Especially when you announce that your water broke!"

"Oh my god." Eddie laughs "All over the chair and the dining room floor! Maybe I should start sitting on plastic when I reach 8 months just in case." She jokes.

"Oh geez!" Jamie laughs "Pop would of course be in charge of gathering clean towels and boiling water." He jokes.

"What?" Eddie laughs.

"He's a dinosaur." Jamie points out "Men weren't in the delivery rooms with their wives back when Grandma would have had Dad."

"Ah." Eddie notes in understanding "Well your Dad would be gathering his detail to whisk me away to the nearest hospital with full lights and sirens."

"Without a doubt." Jamie agrees "And Danny would get right down in the trenches and be the one to deliver this kid."

"You think?" Eddie ponders.

"Every cop loves delivering a baby." Jamie points out.

"And what about you?" Eddie inquires.

"Me?" Jamie replies "Oh I'm the one encouraging you on while you crush my hand and yell at me that we are never having sex again."

"Good." Eddie commends with an amused chuckle "As long as you know your roll."

"Yes dear." Jamie sweetly replies.

Suddenly Eddie's face turns deadly serious "That better not happen." She declares before looking down at her stomach "You will not make your entrance at Sunday Dinner do you hear me? I will be in a hospital surrounded by doctors and lots of happy drugs."

"Really?" Jamie questions in surprise "Huh, I always pictured you having a natural birth."

Eddie pulls back to look at her husband very unamused "Are you nuts?!"

"What?" Jamie slowly counters "You're a tough, resilient woman who never backs down from a challenge so I just thought..."

"Well you thought wrong!" Eddie interrupts.

"Oh. Sorry." Jamie breathes out in regret "Totally your call." He relents.

"Darn right it is." Eddie reiterates.

Silence.

"Now that that's settled." Eddie decides "Let's get back to where this conversation started – telling everyone. We should invite Rosa and Mia and Maria as well." She decides "Because this baby will affect them too. Your Dad and Grandfather will be okay with that right?"

Jamie smiles "The more the merrier."

Eddie smiles but then scoffs "More like the more the merrier the mayhem!" she points out.

"Exactly!" Jamie quips with a grin.

"Is Joe still away on assignment?" Eddie suddenly questions.

Jamie nods yes.

"Okay so now that we have the guest list…" Eddie decides "…the question is, how do we want to tell them?"

Jamie scrunches his face up "Can we please not make it one of those crazy ass baby reveal exploding cakes or whatever that you see go wrong all the time on the news."

"That's gender reveal mishaps..." Eddie corrects "And god no we aren't doing anything like that – EVER!"

"Thank god." Jamie mutters out in relief.

"But I would like it to be a little more then just a 'hey guess what? We're having a baby!' kind of thing though – just on a much more subtle and simplistic level."

"Okay…" Jamie slowly agrees "Any idea how we do that?"

Eddie jostles her head around "Honestly no so I wouldn't mind actually stopping by a baby store to see what options are out there."

"Baby store." Jamie breathes out as he starts looking around the apartment "We really need to start looking at houses because I'm not dragging in and setting up baby gear in here just to cart it all over to a house later."

"And once we have this baby." Eddie agrees "Pretty sure moving will be the last thing we will want to think about."

"Agreed."
