Chapter 10: Godparents

Mia and Rosa stand on the steps of their church waiting.

"We're here!" Eddie calls as she and Jamie hurry towards them.

Mia place her hands on her hips and frowns "You were supposed to be here at 10am. It's 10:05am. Now we don't have time for you to gush at how pretty my dress is. You'll have to do it after. Let's go." She instructs as she picks up Eddie's hand and leads her inside.

Jamie leans over to Rosa as they both move to follow "You sure we're the godparents here and not the other way around?" he jokes.

"You can always still back out." Rosa reminds him as they walk down the aisle to the front "Last chance."

"No." Mia rejects having heard the exchange "You're stuck with me."

"Wouldn't have it any other way Sweetie." Eddie reassures her "Now let's do this!"

….

Erin is removing a roast from the oven in the Reagan family kitchen while looking at the phone Eddie is holding out to her "Oh that's a good one!" Erin commends as she looks at the photos of Jamie, Eddie, Rosa and Mia taken in the Church right after the Christening that Eddie is swiping through "That one too!"

"It's easier dunking a baby's head though." Jamie jokes as he passes by to pick up a tray for the rolls.

"Yeah nobody told me about that part." Mia dryly states as she sits at the kitchen table.

"It was just a bit of water." Rosa corrects from a chair beside her "Nobody dunked your head."

"He almost ruined my hair!" Mia counters.

"He did not Mia." Rosa rejects before looking at Erin "Are you sure I can't help?"

"Mia you look lovely." Erin compliments "Your hair is perfect." She adds before looking at Rosa "And no, you are the guests."

Mia happily smiles at Erin's compliment "Thank you."

Suddenly Eddie places her hands on her stomach, takes a deep breath and slowly blows it out.

Everyone turns to look at her.

"I'm fine." She promises "Just a little… you know... pregnant."

Mia gets up and walks up to Eddie. She places her hands on her hips and looks at Eddie's stomach. "Hey Baby. You in there. This is your…" but Mia pauses in thought then looks up at everyone around her "Okay what does this make me now? Aunt, cousin, sister, what?"

Eddie and Jamie look at one another in a quick silent conversation - each one asking the other if they have an answer for her.

They aren't related by blood but sometimes you don't have to be to be family. Mia does call them Aunt and Uncle and they are now officially her godparents so Mia had a good question… what would her relationship with their baby be?...

…But as Jamie and Eddie continue to look at one another neither one seems able to come up with an answer so they both just kind of shrug at one another in response.

"You're shrugging." Mia presses at noticing their actions "What does the shrugging mean?"

"Well Mia…" Eddie stalls as she glances over at the young girl "Honestly it… it could be anything you want it to be." Eddie replies as she again looks over at her husband "We'll let you decide." She offers looking for confirmation from Jamie that he's okay with that.

Jamie nods his head in agreement at the solution – letting Mia decide lets them off the hook…

"Hmmmm." Mia ponders "Aunt Mia…" She tests out "Cousin Mia…" she tries again "…Or…" She adds before looking at her Mother "Are you and Daddy having anymore kids?"

Rosa blinks her eyes at her daughter completely blindsided by the question and her eyes nervously dart around to the people in the room "Mia!" She awkwardly hushes out.

"I want to be a big sister." Mia simply explains "So if you're not having any more kids, I need to know now."

Super unhappy her daughter is bringing up such a topic in the Reagan family kitchen of all places, Rosa flatly decides "No. One of you is enough."

"Okay big sister it is!" Mia happily declares causing Eddie, Jamie and Erin all to exchange super surprised looks at her choice but no one has a chance to say anything for Mia continues right along as she turns her attention back to Eddie's stomach "Hey you in there, this is your big sister Mia talking. Stuff a sock in it huh? Today is my day."

MIA!" Rosa barks out in absolute embarrassment "You apologize right now!"

Mia looks up to see Erin, Jamie and Eddie's looks have all turned to unamused expressions.

"Oh come on! I was joking!" Mia states with a laugh "I know babies run the show."

"You do?" Eddie inquires in surprise.

"Hello!" Mia exclaims "Mom runs a daycare service. I was just trying to have some fun. Geez, lighten up people."

Rosa buries her face in her hands "You are now officially her godparents – in your family home – you deal with her."

"What?" Mia defends in confusion not sure what she's done wrong.

Having raised Nicky, Erin feels sympathy for Rosa knowing what a handful girls can be so she walks to the fridge, opens it, pulls out a bottle of wine, picks up a glass off the shelf and walks to the table. "Here." She offers as she sets it down in front of Rosa.

"Hey no fair!" Eddie pouts at not being able to partake as the back door opens and Sean enters "Hey everyone!" he greets.

"You know Mia…" Jamie begins as he looks at his nephew and gets an idea "It is tradition in this house that the youngest grandchild is responsible for setting the table. I think that applies to godchildren too so off you go." He adds with a knock of his head towards the dining room.

"What?" Mia questions in confusion as Sean raises an eyebrow.

"You heard me." Jamie insists as he begins laying out buns on the pan "Go set the table. We need nine place settings – that should keep you busy and out of trouble for a while."

"But it's my day!" Mia protests as a smile creeps up onto Sean's face.

"Ah…" Jamie cajoles "Too bad. Go. Sean can show you where everything is and be sure you pay attention because this is the only time he'll help you. From now on, every time you are here, it will be solely your responsibility to set the table."

"This is so not fair!" Mia protests.

Jamie shrugs "You wanted to be a big sister."

"What? You just said I had to do this because I'm the youngest not the oldest."

"Mia have I said welcome?" Sean laughs "Come on, let's get started!" he prompts as he gestures for Mia to follow him.

"Hmph." Mia pouts but she moves to follow anyway.

Rosa picks up her glass and moves to follow as well "This is going to be so entertaining."

Erin shakes her head and laughs before looking between Eddie and Jamie grinning "Big sister huh? You really just going to let her run with that?"

Eddie laughs in amusement "Well we did tell her it could be anything she wanted…" She relents while Jamie just shakes his head and rolls his eyes in defeat "Only Mia…"

Erin laughs "You guys are such pushovers. You're gonna have to toughen up."

"Hey!" Jamie protests "I got her to set the table didn't I?"

Erin looks at her brother and smiles "You are going to make such a great Dad – the perfect balance of tough but gooey softness." she overdramatically muses as she mimics a grandmother squeezing a young child's cheeks causing Eddie to smile.

At the unexpected, borderline mushy compliment, Jamie feels his cheeks turn a bit red "Shut up." he deflects in embarrassment.

"Oh are you blushing?" Erin giddily quips at seeing his face "You are! I made you blush!"

"He is." Eddie happily giggles.

"Oh stop it." Jamie chides before pick up and thrusting the pan of rolls towards his sister "Here put these in the oven."

"Domestic too." Erin cajoles impressed to Eddie.

"I know." Eddie agrees "So hot."

"Eww, that's my brother!" Erin rejects.

"Well since he knocked me up he's been very helpful on the domestic front." Eddie points out in amusement but also thanks causing Jamie to turn to look at his wife in disbelief.

"I'm sorry are you saying I wasn't helpful before I knocked you up?"

"No, no." Eddie rejects "Of course you were but now you're just MORE helpful."

Erin turns to give her younger brother a proud smile "Good job. I always knew out of all my brothers you had the most potential so I'm happy to see I was right."

"Well when your only other choice now is Danny that's not saying much." Jamie tosses back.

"I'm the other choice for what?" Danny questions as he walks into the kitchen "Since when does the kid set the table?"

"Since as of this morning she's officially our goddaughter and we needed to keep her out of trouble." Jamie explains.

"Well Rosa looks mighty content sitting at that table watching her daughter get a lesson in table setting." Danny laughs.

Suddenly Mia walks back in the room "How much longer until that baby is born?" she queries as she points at Eddie's stomach.

"Why?" Eddie slowly queries.

"Just trying to figure out when I'll no longer be the youngest."

"Well table setting duties don't kick in until… your what? Still nine?" Danny queries.

Mia nods.

"How about that! Age nine." Danny confirms like it's a total coincidence "Until then it will still be on you."

"Hmph." Mia huffs out as she turns and heads back into the dining room.

"Is that true?" Eddie questions.

Jamie, Erin and Danny all look at one another as Henry walks into kitchen.

"Completely." "Totally." "Of course." The three siblings all say together in fake agreement.

"Why does my dining room table look like a rainbow hit it?" Henry flatly inquires.

All eyes turn to look at him.

"What?" Jamie finally questions.

"Every cup, every plate, every napkin, it's all different colors, patterns and styles." Henry explains "I didn't even know we had that many options in this house."

Jamie, Eddie, Danny and Erin all curiously move into the dining room and they all stop short at the sight of the table indeed decked out in nothing but mismatched colorful china. They look from the table to Mia and Sean who are standing together to see them both grinning back at them.

"Um…" Jamie slowly begins.

"Isn't it pretty!" Mia proudly quips cutting him off.

From her seat at the table, Rosa simply turns in her chair and look at the rest of the adults, sipping her wine and smiling as she waits for their reaction.

"Didn't Mia do a great job." Sean snickers in complete amusement.

Not wanting to be the one to break it to Mia she would have to redo it – properly – Erin plasters a smile on her face "I think it looks great!" She suddenly announces letting herself off the hook from being the bad guy.

Danny immediately picks up on what is sister is doing "Absolutely!" He quickly agrees also taking himself out of the running.

Jamie and Eddie both look at one another and before Jamie can even open his mouth to say anything Eddie rushes out a "Love it!" before smiling sweetly at her husband.

Jamie shoots her, his brother and sister a look but instead of being the bearer of bad news to Mia, Jamie deflects "Pop? What do you think?"

All eyes turn to look at him…

"I think it looks like a rainbow." Henry flatly repeats unimpressed but as he looks at Mia and sees how happy and proud she is at her work he can't help but give in so he turns his frown upside down "And I love it!" He lies.

Mia happily claps her hands together.

Rosa shakes her head and takes another sip of wine before raising her glass in a toast to Sean. "You win."

"Told you." Sean laughs.

"What?" Eddie questions.

"I bet Rosa we could set the table however we wanted and you would all cave and say it was great because as tough as this family appears – no one can resist or deny an adorable face like this…" he adds as he points at Mia who just smiles sweetly from ear to ear.

"Come on Mia let's set it properly now." Sean announces as he and Mia move towards the table.

"Don't!" Henry commands stopping them before a mischievous smile appears on Henry's face "Leave it. Francis hasn't seen it yet."

Slowly wide grins creep up onto Danny, Erin's, Jamie's and Eddie's faces…

This is going to be fun…

….

"COME ON DAD!" Erin calls as everyone but Frank is already seated at the table.

"YEAH WE'RE ALL WAITING HERE!" Danny tacks on.

"Alright, Alright, I'm comi…" But Frank's voice trails off the moment he steps in the room and sees not only the table but the grinning faces of everyone sitting at it.

He silently tilts his head to the side and moves to take his seat. "Well this is… different." He finally admits before scanning the faces of everyone at the table. Finally his gaze settles on Mia "Great job Mia." he politely commends.

Rosa looks over in surprise "How did you know it was her?"

Frank smiles his trademark smile and opens his mouth to speak but before he can say a word, Jamie, Eddie, Danny, Erin, Henry and Sean all say in unison "He's the police commissioner, he knows everything." before they all laugh.

Frank looks around the table and frowns "Am I really that predictable?"

"Absolutely Francis." Henry counters with a chuckle "Absolutely. Now who is saying Grace?"

Mia immediately raises her hand in the air "ME!"

…..

Helping to clear the table after dinner, Rosa smiles as she glances over at her daughter off to the side in another room playing cards with Frank and Henry before picking up a stack of dishes and walking into the kitchen "Where do you want these?"

"Jamie will take them." Eddie states as she stands at the island dishing the left overs into containers.

Jamie turns away from the sink "Thanks Rosa." He states as he moves to take the dishes from her and then turn back towards the sink.

For a moment Rosa stands there looking back and forth between the couple before clearing her throat "Listen…" She awkwardly begins "About what Mia said earlier – thank you for humoring her. I can talk to her and..."

"It's okay." Eddie reassures her as she briefly glances up from her task "We don't mind."

Rosa looks a bit surprised by that "You don't?"

"No." Jamie reiterates.

Eddie shrugs "It's kind of cute."

"Unless…" Jamie hesitates in realization as he looks at Rosa "Unless you mind? If you're not comfortable…"

"No, it's not that I'm not comfortable…" Rosa immediately interrupts "More like its just a little… weird… I guess? I mean maybe? Kind of?"

But then the sound of Mia shrieking in delight wafts into the kitchen "I WON!"

Rosa looks towards the sound in surprise causing Jamie to lean over to her and explain "They let her win."

Rosa turns to look at Jamie to see him nodding in confirmation "Dad and Pop always let the grandchildren win – it's kind of a tradition."

At hearing that, it suddenly hits Rosa that somehow The Reagan Family – not just Jamie and Eddie - have taken her daughter in as one of their own. She truly had a village now…

"Mommy!" Mia excitedly exclaims as she comes running into the room "I won against two Commissioners! TWO!"

"I heard Baby." Rosa returns with a smile noting how happy her daughter is.

"MIA!" Henry's voice calls "I'M DEALING ANOTHER HAND! ARE YOU IN OR ARE YOU OUT?"

"I'M IN! I'M IN! I'M COMING!" Mia calls back as she bolts out of the kitchen just as fast as she entered.

Rosa watches her leave then turns to Jamie and Eddie "So sister." She sighs in defeat not wanting to deprive her daughter of the joy and extended family she seems to have amassed.

Jamie and Eddie nod "Sister." they agree.

Silence.

"Not going to be weird at all." Rosa adds knowing full well it probably would be.

"Nope." Jamie and Eddie agree with equal sentiment.
