A/N: Thanks everyone for the words of encouragement - could really use them right now as I don't see things getting better on the medical front anytime soon...they are still trying to figure out the problem - never mind treating it.

Chapter 38: That Reagan Gut Feeling

Turning onto their street, Jamie eases off the gas as they approach their house.

"Um…why are the lights on?" Eddie questions in confusion.

"And why is there a car in our driveway?" Jamie suspiciously adds as he chooses to not pull into the driveway but park on the street instead to maintain the element of surprise. He turns off the vehicle and he and Eddie get out. They slowly walk up the driveway and up to the car parked there.

"Wait a minute." Jamie notes as he takes in the familiar looking vehicle "Isn't this Sean's car?"

Eddie pulls out her phone and opens her NYPD app. She runs the plates "Yup." She announces unimpressed as she looks at her husband and he looks at her "How do you want to play this?"

A disgruntled look appears on Jamie's face as he moves his jacket out of his way and unclips the strap over his off duty weapon "Like perps breaking into our house."

Eddie eyes her husband in surprise and slight worry "Are you sure?"

"We aren't going to shoot them…" Jamie explains "…just scare the living daylights out of them."

"Them?" Eddie questions.

"You really think he's in there alone?" Jamie challenges.

Eddie groans in realization "You sure we shouldn't just call Danny?" She questions.

"Oh we will…" Jamie promises "…but I'm not waiting for him to get all the way out here. Right now, this is our house..." he reminds her "…he's our nephew, so our problem."

"And do what?" Eddie presses "Arrest them?"

"I am highly considering that option…" Jamie reveals "…but will wait until we get inside to make a final decision.

Eddie laughs "You'd arrest your own nephew?"

"Damn right I would." Jamie admits "He's not a kid anymore and he's breaking the law."

"But he's family." Eddie points out "Isn't it supposed to be family first?"

"Have you learnt nothing from your time with us?" Jamie tosses out.

Eddie rolls her eyes "Never mind." She dismisses before gesturing for Jamie to go first "Lead the way Sarge."

Making their way up the steps, Jamie and Eddie slowly move to the bay window to try to look inside. With the lights on inside they can see Sean through the sheers dancing in the middle of the almost empty living room except for some familiar looking camping gear with a girl.

"Wow." Eddie laughs "Must be a Reagan thing."

A look of utter disdain and annoyance appears on Jamie's face as he watches his nephew and this girl – a girl with shoulder length dark brown wavy hair that suddenly has him thinking of Mia…

"Aw…" Eddie prompts in amusement at noticing her husband's look "Are you mad he's stealing your moves?"

Jamie takes a deep unhappy breath as he reluctantly shifts his eyes from inside the house to his wife "He broke in remember? He doesn't have permission to be here."

"Did he break in though?" Eddie wonders as she moves to the front door. She checks it over and sees no damage "Well he didn't break, break in." She notes "You think he copied one of our keys?"

"Guess we are about to find out." Jamie notes as he moves just past his wife to the door. He carefully tries to open the door to find it locked "Interesting." He notes as he pulls out his keys and inserts his into the lock. He slowly and quietly unlocks the door so as not to alert Sean and his date inside. Removing the key once complete, Jamie pockets his keys then unholsters his gun and puts his free hand on the door knob.

"You really want to go in there all guns blazing?" Eddie questions again.

"Just keep the safety on." Jamie offers.

"Okay." Eddie relents with a sigh as she also pulls out her gun.

"Now don't hold back." Jamie instructs "Fear of god." He reiterates before slowly turning the door knob and once he feels the latch release, he swings the door open in a flurry "POLICE! DON'T MOVE!" He commands and he and Eddie rush inside.

"HANDS WHERE WE CAN SEE THEM!" Eddie demands.

"ON THE GROUND NOW!" Jamie barkingly instructs.

Startled and blindsided, looks of absolute fear appear on Sean and his date's face as they immediately comply and lay down face first on the ground, hands spread out.

"Please don't shoot." Sean pleads as he remains on the ground face looking at the floor "This is my Uncle's house! I have permission to be here!"

At hearing that, Jamie and Eddie both turn to look at one another and their mouths fall slightly open.

"Oh do ya now?" Eddie tosses back with a scoff as she and Jamie both holster their guns.

"Well that's news to us." Jamie agrees "Get up you idiot." He then demands of his nephew.

Eddie leans over towards her husband "Okay maybe don't call him an idiot in front of his girlfriend." She whispers.

"Well he is!" Jamie tosses back.

Having listened to the conversation, the owners of those voices finally register with Sean and he slowly lifts his head to see his Uncle and Aunt both with their hands on their hips staring down at him looking super unimpressed. Sean full body cringes.

"Oh just finally registered with you who just caught you huh?" Jamie challenges his nephew "SEAN!" He chides in exasperated disbelief as he watches his nephew take a deep breath in defeat.

Hearing the guy with the gun call her boyfriend by name, the girl slowly lifts her head up to see guns no longer drawn and Sean slowly sitting up.

"Look Uncle Jamie…" Sean begins "…I can explain."

"Uncle Jamie?" the girl questions in surprise.

"Honey you can sit up now too." Eddie flatly instructs the girl.

"What the hell are you doing here Sean?" Jamie demands "And how the hell did you get in?"

"I thought you said we had free use of the house?" the girlfriend inquires to Sean "That you had permission."

Sean winces slightly at his girlfriend's words.

"Yeah that's a no." Eddie tells her.

"Okay… so… maybe I lied." Sean reluctantly admits.

"Maybe?" Jamie challenges.

"But you have a key." The girlfriend points out in confusion.

Sean full out cringes at his girlfriend's admission as he shoots her look pleading with her to be quiet.

Eddie turns to look at her husband "Oh he does have a key." She repeats before a look of realization appears on her face "Oh my god." Eddie suddenly breathes out "When I couldn't find my keys it was you! You took them, made a copy and then miraculous 'found' them!" She air quotes "You didn't find them!" She accusatorily states "You stole them in the first place!"

"Look I can explain." Sean repeats again.

Jamie grits his teeth together trying to remain calm knowing his nephew was now 100% completely responsible for the lost key fiasco "Oh so you can explain how you 'accidentally' copied one of our keys without permission?" he growls out "Do you have any, ANY idea the turmoil you put us through?"

Having never really dealt up close and personal with the emotions of a pregnant woman before, Sean didn't really see what the big deal was "It wasn't even 12 hours." He defends.

"You stole the keys of a pregnant woman you idiot!" Jamie spits out "The smallest thing sets her off on an emotional roller coaster ride and when that happens that roller coaster usually goes crashing right into ME!"

Eddie turns to glare at her husband "EXCUSE ME?" she growls out with such force that both Sean and Beth unconsciously take a step back away from her.

"12David Eddie." Jamie immediately states as he glares at Sean a second more as if to say SEE! before turning to look at his wife "Focus on the bigger picture here."

Noting the use of their previously agreed upon trigger phrase, Eddie takes in a very deep calming breath and slowly blows it out.

Jamie cautiously watches his wife waiting on pins and needles – being the first time they are actually putting the 12David theory into practice he isn't even entirely sure it will work…

Eddie takes another deep breath then another as Jamie patiently waits for his wife.

Meanwhile Sean – again not having the slightest clue what is happening - looks between his Aunt and Uncle "Um… what are we waiting for?"

Jamie's hand flies out and points a warning finger at his nephew "Shut up." he hisses "Just wait." he demands as he continues to watch his wife "Good?" he finally but very cautiously questions her.

Taking in one more deep breath, Eddie blows it out and finally nods in confirmation "I think so."

"Huh." Jamie notes in slight awe before turning his gaze back to his nephew "You are so lucky we came up with that." He states "Because she was about to go Super Nova."

Eddie takes in one more deep calming breath for good measure "Kittens and rainbows. Kittens and rainbows… OH! I wish Reagan was here…" she breathes out in a small pout as she suddenly has the urge to want to just grab Mia's cat and just hug him tight.

The girlfriend glances around very confused "Reagan?"

"He's a cat." Sean quickly mutters to her but his eyes are focused on his Aunt watching her do an emotional flip flop and starting to understand what his Uncle is talking about "Okay well um, I didn't mean to upset anyone." He admits "I brought the keys back as soon as I made the copy…"

Jamie turns to look at his wife "You know Eddie…" He interrupts "…what I'm hearing here is intent. Intent to commit a crime."

Looking at her husband, Eddie's emotions go crashing back to reality as she remembers what Sean has done.

Sean's eyes widen in realization at his uncles words "Oh you can't be serious."

"Oh he's very serious right now." Eddie warns "So I'd tread reeeeeally carefully here because you know he'll do it."

"Do what?" the girl inquires in confusion.

Sean sighs in defeat "Arrest us."

"WHAT?!" The girl cries in fear "I thought you said he was your Uncle!"

"I AM!" Jamie growls "I am also the owner of this house and a police officer and neither of you…" He authoritatively barks out in frustration "…have permission to be here so you are in fact breaking the law!"

"Look she didn't have anything to do with this okay!" Sean throws back "This is all on me so if you are hell bent on arresting someone then just arrest me but leave her out of this!"

"Oh the next generation clearly got the Reagan protective gene too." Eddie quietly notes to herself as she eyes Sean's girl up and down "What's your name Honey?" Eddie curiously inquires.

"Beth." The girl mutters.

"And how old are you?" Eddie inquires.

"18."

"So an adult." Eddie again notes before her eyes begin scanning the room taking in their surroundings but they suddenly stop and grow a bit wide when they see an open bottle of booze "Jamie." Eddie breathes out in concern as she walks over and picks it up to show him.

Jamie's eyes grow wide at the sight of it and he whips his head in his nephew's direction staring daggers at him.

"Oh come on. I'm almost 21!" Sean defends "Even Dad knows I have a fake ID!"

"But she's not!" Jamie growls back in anger at how this night just got worse "And you're in OUR house. That makes you both OUR responsibility!"

"I didn't have any!" Beth promises "I swear!"

"And I'm the Queen of England." Eddie retorts before pausing in thought "Wait I guess that saying doesn't actually apply anymore does it… well there is Camilla…" She then ponders.

"If we keep looking are we going to find drugs too?" Jamie demands of his nephew bringing Eddie back to the moment at hand.

"What? NO!" Sean immediately promises as Beth also shakes her head no in agreement.

Eddie sighs "Do we believe them?"

"No." Jamie honestly and very flatly replies.

Now it's Sean's turn to look at his Uncle in disbelief "You don't believe me?"

"Sean you copied our key without permission!" Jamie points out "You broke into our house! You're drinking underage! I wouldn't have believed any of that 15 minutes ago yet here we are!"

"Well the drinking underage thing I believe." Eddie mutters.

"So search me!" Sean spits out in frustration "Search our stuff! There are no drugs!"

Beth's eyes go wide "Can they do that?"

"Only if we give them permission." Sean explains "Which I am." He reiterates to his Uncle.

"Beth?" Eddie prompts "Are you giving us permission?"

"Um…okay?" She hesitantly prompts not at all sure what she is agreeing to.

"Okay then." Jamie lets out and he moves towards Sean and Eddie moves towards Beth. They both do pat downs and find nothing.

They then move towards their belongings and with their backs to Sean and Beth, Jamie and Eddie begin searching their stuff.

From the corner of her eye, Eddie suddenly sees her husband pull something from Sean's bag and for a moment still his movements.

She looks over to see him holding a box of condoms. Jamie looks over and meets her eyes and they both suddenly realize that if they hadn't have arrived when they did, sex in their house was likely the next step in the evening plans for Sean and his date.

Watching the silent looks between his Aunt and Uncle, Sean suddenly realizes what his Uncle must have found and he closes his eyes a moment in embarrassment at the same time Jamie closes his eyes and tries to take a deep calming breath. Nope. Jamie thinks He was wrong. This night just got worse because now all he can picture in his mind is finding Mia or god forbid his own daughter like this with some guy someday and all he wants to do is throw up. This isn't that. He tries to remind himself. Beth is not Mia. Beth is not my daughter. He repeats in his head like a mantra… She's an adult. He's an adult… he tries to reason with himself before tossing the box back in the bag and continuing on with his search.

Jamie and Eddie find nothing and both turn back to Sean and Beth.

"See." Sean points out as Eddie feeling a little hot, unzips her jacket "Nothing."

Jamie shoots his nephew a glare as if saying "oh I found something and know what you had planned." but he doesn't actually voice those words, instead he says "Don't think that let's you off the hook. You've still done plenty wrong tonight."

Sean rolls his eyes as Eddie looks at Sean wearing a tshirt and Beth in a light blouse and a thought pops in her brain so she walks over to the thermostat on the wall.

"Did you just roll your eyes at me?" Jamie warns his nephew as Eddie sees the gauge set to room temperature.

"I'm an adult Uncle Jamie..." Sean begins but Eddie calls out "JAMIE!" interrupting him as she rubs her temples trying to remain calm herself.

"What?" Jamie questions as he looks at his wife.

But all Eddie can do is point at the box on the wall and repeatedly mutter "12 David, 12 David, 12 David."

Jamie looks at his wife in concern at her muttering but then his eyes slowly drift from her in the direction she is pointing. A moment later he looks back at Sean and Beth and realizes how they are dressed. His eyes immediately go wide in fear as he gets what his wife is implying "Oh god." he mutters as he hurries over to look himself and when he sees the current temperature Jamie whips around to face his nephew. "How long has this been set this high?" He demands.

"What? It's room temperature." Sean defends "It was cold in here."

And something in Jamie just completely snaps "THERE'S A REASON FOR THAT SEAN!" He barks before taking in a very deep breath "You know. You're right." Jamie then decides as he digs his phone out of his pocket "You are an adult." He reasons as he starts to compose a text message "So you should be treated as one." He adds before hitting send and pocketing his phone. "One that committed a class D felony – criminal trespassing in the first degree." He announces as he reaches around his waist to pull out his cuffs "Give your Aunt your car keys Sean." Jamie orders "Because you and I are going for a ride."

Shaking his head in disbelief that this is really happening, Sean jams his hand into his pocket and pulls out his keys. He hands them to Eddie.

"Hands behind your back." Jamie instructs his nephew as he steps towards him and cuffs him…
