1971. Luke is 15, Daisy 14, and Bo 13. I don't own the dukes of hazzard.
It was time to get up at the Duke farm, a little after, in fact. But, Luke'd let Bo sleep in 'cause he'd been wheezing harshly in his sleep all night.
Finally, there was no more time, and they had to get to school so, Luke shook Bo awake.
"Get up, Bo, c'mon." Luke took his blankets off.
"I'm coming..." Bo started to sit up.
"C'mon, I've letcha sleep in already." Luke grabbed his arm and started dragging him.
Bo got to his feet and went to the bathroom to change.
Luke went into the kitchen. "I woke him up, he'll be here directly." Luke reported to Jesse.
"Alright." Jesse plated some food for Bo.
Bo came into the kitchen and sat at the table. "Sorry it took me sa' long."
Jesse sat next to Bo at the table and listened to him breathing. "Your breathin' sounds a mite rough." He commented.
"He was doin' that all night." Luke added before Bo could reply.
"Yeah, well, I'll be fine." Bo cleared his plate and grabbed his backpack. "Let's go, Luke. Bye, uncle Jesse."
"Bye." Jesse gave Luke a look that said 'watch over him today', but Luke couldn't very well do that, as he was in high school and Bo in middle school.
Luke nodded, and they both took off on their bikes. Daisy'd been sleeping over at a friends house so, her folks took Daisy to school.
"C'mon we's gonna be late." Bo sped up and passed Luke.
"There ain't no rush."
Bo rolled his eyes. "Will ya quit worryin' on me? It takes all the fun out of everything."
"You know what else would take the fun out of everything? If you had an asthma attack and passed out."
"Yeah, you're right." Bo slowed down.
"You look after yourself today, you hear me?" Luke demanded as Bo parked his bike at the middle school.
"Okay, bye cuz." Bo waved.
"See ya." Luke headed on to the high school.
By the time PE was half done, Bo was about ready to pass out. He could hardly breathe and it was getting worse.
"S'cuse me?" Bo approached the teacher, the only PE teacher he'd ever liked.
"You alright there, Bo?" Mr. Hudson asked. He was familiar with all of his students problems, including Bo's asthma.
"Nah, I'm a little shorta breath." Bo panted.
"You can sit down fer a spell." He granted.
"Thanks." Bo sat on the grass and put his head in his hands.
Bo's friend Carl trotted up to the teacher. "Can I talk to Bo?"
"For a minute." Mr. Hudson giggled a little: Carl was kinda pudgy, and he could probably use all the exercise he could get.
"Are ya alright?" Carl stood over Bo.
"Ain't sure." Bo coughed.
"Let me get your inhaler."
"Yeah, you best." Bo scooted over to a shrub and leaned back on it.
"I'm gonna go get Bo his inhaler, okay?" Carl asked Mr. Hudson.
"Okay, but hurry back, hear?"
"Yes sir." Carl ran off.
Well, at least he's running. Mr. Hudson chuckled to himself. Then he glanced over at Bo, who was leaning into the shrub, wheezing pretty badly now.
"Carl'll be here directly." Mr. Hudson knelt next to Bo.
"I can't...breathe..." Bo leaned his head back.
"Tommy!" Mr. Hudson called to Bo's other friend.
"Dang, Bo, you okay?" Tommy ran up and knelt next to Bo.
"He can't breathe." Mr. Hudson answered for Bo.
"I'll go run and-"
"Carl's gettin' it." Mr. Hudson interrupted.
Tommy pulled Bo off of the shrub and leaned him against himself. "Keep breathing."
Carl ran up with the inhaler and handed it to Tommy.
After several minutes, Bo could breathe again, but he was still coughing and wheezing.
"Alright kids, y'all run two more laps each, and then go on to yer next classes." Mr. Hudson directed.
"I'll let the teachers know where y'all are. Y'all can be excused fer a spell." Mr. Hudson said to Bo, Carl, and Tommy.
"I'm okay." Bo almost whispered through the coughs.
"I'm gonna take ya to the nurses office, son." Mr. Hudson pulled Bo up to his feet.
Bo didn't want to go to the nurses office and get put on oxygen, but he also felt like he was gonna pass out so, he didn't bother argue.
"Can-" Bo started.
"Yeah, one of 'em can go with ya." Mr. Hudson looked at his schedule of all of the classes. "Tommy, you best go. Carl has a math test in 2 minutes."
Mr. Hudson and Tommy took Bo to the school nurse, where just as he thought, he was given an oxygen mask and told to sit back and breathe.
"I'm gonna call your uncle, okay?" The nurse decided after Bo still couldn't breathe properly after 15 minutes.
"Duke farm, Jesse Duke here." Jesse picked up the phone.
"Mr. Duke? I'm miss Miler, the Hazzard Middle School nurse?"
Oh, lordy, Bo again... Jesse sighed to himself. "Yes, ma'am."
"It seems your nephew Beauregard is having trouble breathing. I've been giving him oxygen, but there ain't much else I can do. If you could come pick him up, I'll excuse him for the rest of the day."
"I'll be there directly, thank you, miss." Jesse hung up.
"Tommy, you'd best get on to class. Bo'll be okay." Miss Miler directed.
"Yes ma'am." Tommy sighed. "Bye, Bo."
Bo nodded and waved as Tommy left.
"You know I've never asked you before: How long have you had asthma, hold up your fingers?" Miss Miller tried to make conversation.
Bo held up 8 fingers.
"8 years?" Miss Miller asked.
Bo nodded.
"You're used to it by now, huh?"
Bo nodded. He knew Miss Miller pretty well, after all, he had to see her at least five times every two weeks for the past 2 years. He was anxious about getting to know the high school nurse next school year, but at least he'd be at the same school as Luke an' Daisy.
After a while, Jesse arrived to take Bo home.
"Hey, Bo. Ya all set?" Jesse walked into the room.
Bo ripped off the oxygen mask and stood up. "Yeah."
"Make 'im rest a spell when he gets home." Miss Miler suggested.
"I was plannin' on it." Jesse replied.
"Thanks ma'am." Bo graced as he left.
"Bye, Bo." She waved.
Jesse got Bo home and ordered him to watch TV or read on the couch with an inhaler. At least it wasn't school.
