Black Velvet—Alannah Myles
"That was right cool," Mase says as we walk out of the theater, fingers linked between us. "I expected this dodgy B-rate film, but that was bloody rad."
"It surprised me too," I reply, laughing now that the terror is behind me. "I just knew those kids were about to be T-Rex food."
"Aw, man." He grabs his stomach with his free hand. "That would've been too much."
I huff a laugh.
He pauses us beside the bed of my truck, my back pressed against the metal. His sea eyes are speaking a language I'm not quite ready to explore, and I look away, afraid of leading him on with soft eyes but a closed heart.
He tilts up my chin. "Don't do that," he murmurs, his thumb brushing my jaw. "This isn't complicated. I like you, and we have a good time together. Do I wanna shag? Sure." He shrugs, an uncomfortable laugh escaping his pouty lips. "But it doesn't have to be tonight, or tomorrow, or—"
I lift to my tiptoes and smash my lips to his, cutting off his cute rambling. He's told me everything I need to know already, and it's exactly what I'm looking for.
Uncomplicated.
And fun.
There's a slight moment of panic when my brain catches up with my body, but Mase slides his hand into my hair and cups my face as he deepens the kiss. I relax, sighing into his mouth as our tongues make contact.
This kiss is nothing like I'm used to. Instead of a fast battle with rocking heads and tangling tongues, it's slow passes and easy brushes, diving deep then shallow before pulling away with a hum.
"That was unexpected," he says, peppering kisses along my jaw. "But feel free to do it again. Anytime."
"It was unexpected," I agree, taking a deep breath and releasing it slowly. "But it was also nice."
Those words don't come without a pang of sadness, but I look forward to the day when they do.
"Nice is a good start."
"Start …" I trail off because he takes my lips with his again.
This kiss is more intentional on his part.
He's confident.
Cocky even.
And a disgruntled moan escapes my lips as he pulls away. "Better than nice?"
"Way better." I smile up at him, and my stomach flutters when he returns it.
He shakes his head, laughing as he pulls open the driver's door. "After you," he says, taking my hand to help lift me inside like a gentleman. He scoots in beside me, his eyes focused straight ahead. "I had a bloody good time tonight."
I nestle closer into his side. "It was fucking awesome."
"Fucking awesome works for me." He fires up the engine.
I turn on the radio, and Alannah Myles is singing in that smokey tone of hers, so I open my mouth and belt it along with her.
Mama's baby's in the heart of every schoolgirl
"Love Me Tender" leaves 'em cryin' in the aisle
The way he moved, it was a sin, so sweet and true
Always wanting more, he'd leave you longing for
Mase joins in here and there, leaning over to sing into my fist microphone. I continue after that first song, belting out the lyrics to the next two before we make it to my house.
Jasper's Pinto is parked in the cul-de-sac, just like we planned, and Mase pulls into my driveway and kills the engine. "I didn't get to keep you long enough," he says, shifting so he's angled toward me. "We should knock about again soon."
"I'd like that." My heart thuds heavily in my chest. "Tomorrow?"
"Dinner?"
"My mom is the manager at the diner," I tell him. It feels weird to be doing all the get-to-know-you stuff after all these years, but it also stirs that tingling excitement. "Wanna meet there after my shift at Newton's?"
"Sounds like a plan."
My stomach bunches up just a tiny bit, but I ignore it and give him a smile. "Okay."
"I have to get out now, eh?"
I giggle, and it's this weird flirty sound that I haven't heard in a long time. "You could stay."
"What would your mom say about that?"
I shrug a shoulder. "That I'm an adult and capable of making my own decisions."
His eyebrows shoot up to hide behind his shaggy bangs. "You're serious?"
"Dead serious," I say.
He leans in close, and I breathe him in as he places a soft kiss on the corner of my mouth. "I'll remember that for later." The door clicks open. "Bye, Bella."
I don't respond.
I don't need to.
My eyes stay on him until he's no longer visible.
All right, guys.
I shall see you on Tuesday (the tortureeeee)
If a shark doesn't eat my kayak in the Bahamas (like the hubs fears), but no worries, I have insisted he offer his up as an alternative if the situation arises hehe... true conversations happening at the Fyre house.
Tell me how much you love Mase!
