Chapter 10

It's like any other Saturday

Tris' POV

"Take care. Thanks for coming," I say, wishing another customer farewell. I let out a small sigh as the door closed behind them.

It's been a usual busy Saturday with both Junior and Em in the bakery with us. Christina has been busy all morning with the books and inventory, while I have been busy working both the front and the back of the house. I have a few loaves of bread and cookie dough proofing in the back, buying me some time so Lauren, our front cashier can take a break. Molly, who cleans the tables and maintains the front, called out with the flu. But that doesn't mean I lack the help. Even at such a young age, Em loves to help out at the bakery. She finds little things such as wiping down the tables, chairs and even wiping down the display counter and glass fun and exciting. She is a great helper for such a little girl.

Junior on the other hand, hates the thought of cleaning…Instead he busies himself at one of the six tables coloring and drawing his heart out. Chris has a whole wall full of his artwork in the back breakroom. Em has drawn a few herself, but nothing like Will Jr. Chris swears one day he will be an artist, or even an architect like his father strived to be before he died.

Typically, we don't always have the kids in here on Saturdays or Sundays, but it turned out my folks got the stomach flu and Caleb had a last-minute cramming session to do for one of his classes since midterms are coming up.

I admit it took Caleb a while to warm up to the idea of being an Uncle. But even he couldn't resist those ocean blue eyes of Emily's. I swear she catches the hearts of anyone that comes close to her. Her intelligence calls to him, as she was reading since the age of four. I was thankful when he did come around, our relationship definitely took a turn for the better when he accepted me becoming a mother. I don't regret having Emily or being with Tobias for that matter…. She is the best thing that came out of us being together.

"All done Mommy." Emily announces as she rushes back up to me, looking back at the clean tables and chairs she smiles at the proud work she has done. The twinkle in her ocean blue eyes, the eyes of her father, make it hard not to smile at her enthusiasm. I always did find it hard to say no to those eyes, just like I do now when they are staring at me from our daughter's face. I can't help but smile back at her, kneeling down to kiss her forehead once more.

"Awesome job, baby. Why don't you wipe down the glass case for me again," I suggested to her. Customers are always touching it, pointing at what they want while smudging their fingerprints all over it. We've gotten into the habit of wiping the thing down at least every hour.

I stand back for a moment watching Emily spray the disinfectant first on the display case glass and begin to wipe it down. Her long blond hair waves from side to side with each movement. I stand back in awe of her. She may have Tobias' eyes, nose and his full lips, but the rest of her is all me. Including her stubborn attitude.

The vibration of my phone in my pocket knocks me back to reality. I pull it out, just for a quick glance. I sigh when I see it's Zeke again. I press my lips into a straight line, wondering why he is so persistent to talk to me today. When I woke up this morning I noticed that I had not one but four missed calls from him last night. I texted him this morning, letting him know I was wiped out from yesterday's orders and passed out way before 9 last night. He called another six times since then… Texting me to answer his calls, that it is urgent. Unfortunately, whatever it is has had to wait, there just hasn't been any time to talk this morning. There was a growing line of customers even before we opened the doors.

For a moment I wonder if this has to do with him and Shauna. I know that they have been having a rough patch the past few months lately. They have tried so hard to hide it from the group, but we all see it. The tension, the fighting, the snarky comments that they are making to each other that they once swore they would never do to the other. Not to mention that Zeke spent a few restless nights on Uriah's couch a few weeks ago. Up till now Zeke and Shauna have refused to speak to any of us about whatever is going on between them. I try to give them their space as much as I can, but it still sucks to see them suffering so much.

I'm about to reply back, letting him know I'll call him later when the door chimes again. I turn my screen off on my phone, slipping it back into my back pocket. I guess that will have to wait a little longer.

I glance up towards the door to wish the customer well as they enter. But I'm stunned, frozen in place, my mouth suddenly goes dry and I'm unable to speak. A small gasp finally escapes me when I remember my daughter is still standing in the room, wiping the display case down. She doesn't have a care in the world, doesn't even pay the customer any mind as she works hard. For that I'm thankful for, because the customer that is standing in the doorway, is just as stunned to see me as I am to see him. His ocean blue eyes are wide open, staring at me in shock. He begins to finally take a step forward, just as Christina rushes out from the back room. She seems irritated and is yelling into her cell phone…

"Alright. Alright… I'll tell her." She screams out, her eyes remain on everything but the customer that just entered the bakery. "Tris, it's Zeke… His highness says to call him ba-" She stops mid-sentence, realizing that the customer at the door is none-other than Tobias Eaton. The same Tobias Eaton that is the father of my daughter that is standing just a few feet away from us both. The realization of why Zeke has been hounding me with his phone calls all night and morning finally hits me.

A/N

I guess Tris knows why Zeke has been calling her non-stop. What are your thoughts on Tobias' reaction? Do you think he will figure it out?

Stay tuned to find out.
