Chapter 15
Who's my Daddy?
Tris' POV
Two years ago
I hurry as fast I can to the door of our house, nearly knocking it down as I unlock the deadbolt.
"What happened?" I blurt out, slamming the door behind me as I enter. I see the concern written all over Chris' face and my stomach drops to the ground.
"She's very upset. She's been crying since we got home." Chris informs me, gesturing up the stairs. "She refuses to come down. I thought it would be best to wait for you." She presses her lips into a straight line.
We knew something like this would happen sooner or later. To be honest I'm surprised it didn't happen sooner. Kids can be so cruel.
"Thanks Chris," I say, as I slowly make my way to the stairs.
Chris has changed a lot since having Will Jr. She was always so candor growing up. Never censoring her words, saying the first thing that hit her head… Luckily, she learned to breathe first and think before opening her mouth. Thinking it through before just bursting out what she wanted to say, no matter how mad she was. I was still surprised that she didn't lash out at Tobias the other day at the bakery, but she knew it wasn't her place to do so.
I push myself to take two steps at a time instead of taking just one. My short legs make it difficult, but nothing is going to slow me down from getting to Emily as fast as I can.
"Baby," I say softly, knocking on her door. "It's Mommy." I say as I turn the knob to her door and let myself in. My heart breaks as I hear her sobs, her broken heart in pain. I don't hesitate to climb into the bed with her, spooning her tightly against my chest. "Sweetheart, what happened?"
"Timothy was making fun of me today." She cries out. What? I close my eyes tightly, hating what my baby is going through. "He said I was so disgusting that even my own daddy left me." She cried harder than I thought could be possible that day.
"That's not true baby," I say quickly, wanting to comfort her. "You are the most beautiful… The bravest… most intelligent little girl that has ever lived."
"Well then why did Daddy leave me? Why isn't he here with us?" She asked. My heart breaks at the thought of telling her the whole truth. It's the truth that can break or make someone, let alone a five year old. I take a deep breath, collecting my thoughts before I speak.
"Do you remember the story I told you about how you were born?" I ask. I wipe a tear away from her cheek as Emily nods, giving me a small smile. She has always loved hearing about how she came into this world.
"Everyone was there waiting…" She says, remembering that everyone that mattered to us stopped their world to be at the hospital waiting room.
"That's right… But do you remember how I found out that Mommy was going to have you?" I ask, not surprised when she shakes her head no. "Well, you were a blessing," I began. "I wasn't feeling well, so Grandma took me to the Doctors where I found out that I was going to have a baby." I continued to explain… "You were a surprise, but a magical surprise," I finished.
"But what about my Daddy?" She asks.
"Your Daddy was the love of my life. He was everything to me," I say, twisting around and reaching for the picture frame. I hand it over to Emily as I speak about her father. "He was the most handsome looking boy I had ever seen. He had brown hair and "gorgeous blue eyes." She chimes in, rolling her eyes as we both say gorgeous blue eyes. "I loved him for a really long time. One night, your Daddy had to rescue me from a mean person… And that's when we both found out that we both liked each other." I watch as Emily's eyes light up with excitement from listening to our love story.
"So, what happened?" She asks, wanting to get down to the answer she is looking for.
"He had to leave, and I had to stay. Sometimes… Things we have to do come first before things that are more important. Your Daddy would have been here if he could have been, baby." I assure her.
"Will I ever get to meet him?" She asks.
"I hope so," I simply say. Because it breaks my heart thinking what a wonderful little girl Tobias is missing out on getting to know.
Present day
I fidget with the wine glass that sits on my right thigh. My left foot moves me in a soothing back and forth motion. I stare up at the night sky.
"Kids are down." Christina says, as she comes out the back door. She leaves the sliding door open slightly in case the kids wake so we can hear them. She takes a seat next to me on the bench swing, careful not to spill her own wine.
This has become nearly a nightly routine for us for the past year or so. A way to reflect and talk about the kids or the business or just life in general at the end of the day.
"Yeah, Emily went down quickly. She was tired," I admit.
"Yeah, junior was too. Mondays." She says, as we fall into yet another awkward silence. I know that Christina has things on her mind that she has been dying to say, things that have been burning a hole in her throat as she has tried to keep them to herself. We continue the smooth sway back and forth on the swing, knowing that any minute she will burst. I honestly don't know what to say to her.
"No call yet from Four? "Not yet," I say, taking a sip of my red wine.
"Do you want him to call? I mean obviously he just can not call. I saw his face… He connected the dots…" She continues, "he needs to step up…"
"Chris, you are asking questions that I have been asking myself since Saturday. Zeke said he would find Four…Whether that means to be there for him or try to… I don't know," I say, sounding defeated as I confess my own confusions. I hate not knowing what is happening, or what is going to happen. Will he want to see her? What if he wants nothing to do with her? I fight the tears that threaten to spill over. There is no point in shedding anymore tears for Tobias. I learned that a long time ago. Chris nods her head, understanding that there isn't anything to be said that hasn't been thought of.
"I have a date next week." Chris says, I'm thankful for the change in subject.
"Really?" I ask. I didn't even realize she was ready to date again.
"Yup. He has an older brother if you want to double date with us." She says, smiling. I raise an eyebrow at her, she can't be serious.
"What are we in Junior year in high school?" I ask, my voice is as sarcastic as ever.
"Of course not." She says, trying to act insulted. "We are seniors!" She teases. I chuckle while taking another sip of my wine.
I haven't dated since Tobias, to be honest… I'm not really looking. I just want to be happy with what I have and spend my time with Emily. Making sure I'm the best parent that she can have. After all, up till now I'm the only parent she has had. It's not her fault that Tobias has not been here and it isn't mine, but I'll be damned if she pays the price for it.
"Do you think Zeke has spoken to Four?" She asks.
"If I know Zeke... He has found, spoken, and they probably beat the shit out of each other while doing it," I say, laughing at the thought. How many times did I see bruises on Tobias or Zeke after hours of them sparing at each other in the gym until they worked their shit out.
"Now that would have been entertainment…" Chris announces. "My money is on Zeke." She says.
"Christina," I scolded her.
"What? Even I want a round with him in the ring…" She shakes her head as she continues, "after all these years…. After everything." She confesses, just as my phone rings. I look down between us, glancing at the light screen with an old picture of Zeke and Emily appearing on my phone. It's him. He is finally calling to tell me whether he has found Tobias or not.
"Zeke," I greet him, my nerves are shot to hell as I speak to him.
"Tris…. I found him." He says….
A/N
It's finally getting down to the wire… Will things work out? Will Tris hear Tobias out?
Stay tuned for next week.
