Chapter 27
Being swept off my feet
Tris' POV
"Good morning, beautiful."
"How's our girl?"
"Miss me? I miss you."
"When can I kiss you again?"
"Sweet dreams, Love."
How are my favorite two girls doing today?"
"I wish I was sleeping right next to you."
These are just a few of the countless number of sweet texts that Tobias has sent me over the past few days. He doesn't fail to send me one before I wake up and one before I go to sleep. He always sends one in the mid-day checking on both Emily and me. That's just the icing on the cake. Of course, Tobias is anything but subtle… twice this week I have been surprised by some kind of delivery at the bakery. The first was the morning after our date, he surprised me with a gorgeous arrangement of red roses and a card "thanking me for such a lovely night." The other one was a few days later. The delivery was around my lunch time, I was exhausted having triple orders to fill since the crack of dawn… I barely had the strength to sit down, let alone figure out something to eat. That's when Chris popped her head in the breakroom with a brown bag that was just delivered for a Miss Tris Prior. It was my favorite wonton soup. That too had a small note inside… "Thought you could use a little pick me up, love Tobias." There were also the occasional phone calls. Sometimes they were comforting and supportive calls, other times they were just to hear my voice. It's a complete 180 turnaround from what it was like being his girlfriend in the past. It's been everything that we always said we wanted to be like but couldn't because we had to stay in such a low profile.
I let out a sigh, pushing the stress out of me from the week. I smile when I hear my little girl laughing and playing in the backyard. Every time I hear her, especially after a long day like today… I know it's all worth it because of her.
"Well, well, well, there you are." Chris says greeting me, her voice filled with sarcasm and her smile says that she obviously is annoyed and not happy at all. I really don't need this right now. Honestly, I need a shower to get some of this flour out of the certain areas that flour shouldn't be in and possibly have a large glass of wine. Things between Chris and I have been strained for the past week, as she continues to verbally express her hatred towards Tobias.
"Hello to you too, Chris," I say, slipping off my shoes with my toes.
"Your boy toy is here." She announces. "I really hope you don't think he will be moving in." She expresses. Something about her tone and word choices tell me if things don't change between her and Tobias and I …. I might have to make some real choices soon. Choices I shouldn't have to be forced to make between my best friend and my daughter's father.
"He is not my boy toy," I responded.
"Really? Well boy toy is in the kitchen whipping up some dinner for you." She continues. "He's probably trying to butter you up, while trying to get into your pants." She blurts out, walking away before I can say one word. "Make sure you don't shave your legs." I hear her mutter. I bite my lip, shaking my head before moving forward towards the kitchen. I know one day sooner rather than later she and I will have to sit down and talk. I just would like to do it after I figure out Tobias and me.
"Hey, what are you doing here?" I ask, as I approach Tobias who is busying himself with stirring what I can only hope is spaghetti sauce.
"I wanted to make you a home cooked meal. You sounded like you had a long day." He announces, as he raises the wooden spoon to my lips. I eagerly sip the sauce, tasting the garlic and onions, which overwhelms my tongue. He then kisses me gently and almost way too quickly. "Mmm." I moan a little too loudly. Tobias smiles brighter at the sound, obviously pleased with himself.
"Thank you. You didn't have to do this though." I begin.
"I wanted to." He expresses. "Maybe one day when you've had a long day, you can come home to a cooked meal, a drawn bubble bath and a nice glass of wine."
"I like the sound of that," I say, just as we hear the sound of kids rushing towards the kitchen. Tobias and I both break free from each other. Guilt overwhelms me almost immediately when I see Emily smiling up at me and Tobias. We haven't told her about Tobias' and my relationship, let alone that Tobias is her father yet. Tobias and I both agreed to give it some more time before we add Emily into the equation. But I know we have to tell her soon. She deserves to know, and Tobias is obviously deserving of her. He is so good with her.
Dinner is shockingly delicious, chicken parmesan and garlic bread. I think even Christina was left speechless.
"How did you learn how to cook?" Christina asked between mouthfuls.
"I was the one that often cooked when I lived with my dad." Tobias answers.
"Well at least he taught you something right." Christina mutters, I kick her softly under the table, letting her know to knock it off. "Ouch. What? You know I'm right." She whines.
"No. She's right." Tobias intersects. "That's about the only thing from my father's lessons that any good has come from them." Dinner goes on, almost awkwardly only silent breaker is coming from the kids who are jumping in their seats and chatting off about everything and anything in the world. Which I am thankful for, it distracts both Tobias and Christina from their bickering.
Tobias offers to tuck Emily into bed and read her a bedtime story for me. He pours me a very large glass of wine, before following Emily upstairs to her room, which I happily take outside to the back porch swing.
"He sure is taking the role of Daddy now. Isn't he?" Chris sits beside me. "The perfect father and the perfect boyfriend." My blood boils each time she speaks a word as she pops the last letter of each, making them more pronounced. "If I didn't know any better… I would say he never ran out on you and Emily." She blurts out. I shake my head; this has to end now.
"Chris." I begin, my voice not hiding one ounce of how I feel. "I love you and you've always been my sister. I get that you want to protect me and Emily. I do. But this has to stop. You can't keep doing this. Bad mouthing Four and having this attitude… Has to stop," I say, gesturing with my hands. "Four is here. He is in our lives now. He is trying and so am I. You just have to accept that."
"I just can't stand what he did to you, Tris. No one deserves what he put you through."
"Agreed, but you also have to look at it from a different point of view… He thought he was protecting me. And he never knew about Emily. He was kept in the dark all of this time." I explain. Hoping I didn't reveal too much. After all, it's not my story to tell.
"Protect you from who? The tooth fairy?" She says sarcastically.
"From his father," I blurted out. "It's a really long story and one that isn't my place to tell…. But I promise you he didn't know and if he did, he probably would have figured out a different way around all of this." I know I'm not making sense to her. Of course, I'm not. She doesn't know the full story.
"I just want you to be careful, Tris. Think with your head and not your heart." She says, softly.
"I will be as careful as I can…" I express.
I tiptoed up the stairs not wanting to disturb Tobias and Emily, but wanting to check on how things are going between them. I know eavesdropping is bad… But I can't help it. "Sweet dreams, Princess." I hear Tobias say softly to Emily from the hallway.
"Goodnight, Daddy." Emily says, sleepily. I stop in my tracks in the middle of the hallway. Did he tell her? How? Why? What the fuck?
Tobias comes out of the room, closing the door softly behind him. He turns, shocked to see me standing there frozen in place. Tobias begins to open his mouth, but I stop him by placing a finger onto his lips to silence him. I take his hand, signaling him to follow me into my bedroom. I would rather we have this discussion in private.
"Tris… I…" He begins as I close the door. I hold up my hand to stop him in his tracks.
"You told her?" I accuse, my voice revealing how upset I truly am.
"No." He begins, looking defeated as his arms drop to his sides. "I think it just slipped out of her mouth." He continues, I can see how much that one little name, that one little moment, made him feel. He looks so proud and happier than ever. "She has been asking about us… and she mentioned what you told her about… me. Like the father, me." He admits I feel the blush on my face, remembering the long conversations we would have about her absent father. "Tris?"
"I know. I know. And I agree we should tell her." I agree, sitting down on the edge of the bed. He presses his lips together, taking a seat beside me. He wraps me in his right arm, holding me tightly against him. "But what if she hates me? What if she gets angry that I kept this from her?" I ask, letting all my insecurities out.
"Tris... I have missed everything…. If she hates either of us, it will be me. And for the record… You are her mother; she can't hate you forever." He says, smiling widely. I can't help but smile back as we lean into each other. His lips claim mine, as his tongue slowly maneuvers between both my lips, tasting my mouth. I moan, as I lay back taking him with me. I close my eyes tightly, loving his weight on top of me, my body immediately responding to his hardening dick that he pushes against me.
"I've missed you so much, Tris." Tobias mutters as he kisses down my neck, sucking and biting the sensitive spots. He knows me so well.
"We…We need to stop," I say, breathlessly. My lower body betrays me completely as my hips begin to grind upwards towards his very delicious dick.
"Why?" He asks, refusing to move. "What's wrong?" He asks.
"I'm just not ready," I blurted out, taking the last of my strength to push him an inch up on his arms. He stops kissing me, looking down as he tries to catch his breath.
"Okay." He finally says, as he rolls off of me. I instantly miss his weight on top of me.
"I'm sorry," I say.
"Don't be." He says, sitting up on his elbows, looking down at me. "If you're not ready, then you're not ready." He moves onto his back, rolling over to his right side to face me. "Tris, we have all the time in the world for that. We can wait until you are ready. Plus," He says, leaning in towards my ear. "I would much rather wait until we have the place or a place to ourselves… I want to make you scream, All, Night, long." He says, the last three words, pausing between each word. He kisses my lips between each word, making me almost regret my decision on waiting. So not fair!
"Goodnight Tobias," I say, kissing his lips one last time.
"Goodnight." He says, smiling sweetly down at me He finally let's go of me and begins to back away. I hate to see him go, but knowing I need to get to sleep sometime tonight. I slowly begin to close the front door and lock it but hesitate when I see Tobias' stone-cold face staring off to something in the far distance. I can't help but swing the door back open and step out of the house to see what in the world is going on. Just as I step out, Tobias' arm swings upward, blocking and protecting me from the invisible danger there must be ahead. I hear the tires of a car screech away almost violently, as Tobias refuses to let his guard down.
"What the hell was that?" I ask.
"I don't know, but I'm going to find out." He finally says, refusing to relax his stiff stance. He glances down at me after what feels like a lifetime has passed. Something in his face tells me he won't stop until he figures out exactly what or who that was.

There goes that suspicious car again!
Any thoughts on what that could be about?
