Chapter 2

You're a Magical Boy Varian

"Ruddiger?" Varian asked, still not understanding what he was seeing.

The tiny raccoon nodded and seemed to bounce in midair with excitement.

"Yep! My old name was Ringlet, but I like Ruddiger better so I'm officially changing it." He shimmered for a moment. "There, all done." The poor lost boy felt even more lost than ever.

"Um, what!?" Varian exclaimed, holding out his hands as if worried this new tiny Ruddiger would fall at any moment.

"Oh, I'm so sorry. I got all excited about finally being back home but you're probably confused by all of this."

"Very much so yeah."

"Well you see, I'm not really a raccoon, I'm a magical being called a Kwami. A while back I sort of did something I wasn't supposed to do and wound up in your world. For some reason Kwami magic doesn't work in your world leaving me stuck as a normal raccoon and no way home."

Varian scratched his head trying to understand what his friend was saying.

"OK but, what's a Kwami?"

"Oh, we are magical beings in charge of the miraculous. I'm the Kwami of Innovation"

"The what now?"

"The miraculous are powerful objects that grant the user a super power." Ruddiger said, pointing to Varian's goggles. "Those are the miraculous of the raccoon. It grants the user the power of fusion."

Varian took off his goggles to get a better look. "These old things? But they were my Mother's."

"I came to your world a long time ago. Even though I no longer had my magic I still needed to keep an eye on them. Over time different people found them and passed them on until finally they came to you." The boy looked up at the strange creature.

"Did-did you know my Mom then?" Ruddiger shook his head sadly.

"My raccoon body was resilient but not immortal. I went through a number of life cycles before I met you. Sadly some of her neighbors weren't as humane with pest control as you were." Varian wanted to hug the poor creature but was a little afraid he would crush it if he tried.

"I have so many questions. If you came from this world than how did you get to mine? Actually, how did we both end up back here? What are these powers you keep talking about and why couldn't they work in my world? Do they work here? Do you know how I can get back? Are you really real or is this just a fever dream? Because if it is, this ones a doozy. Also-" The Kwami put a tiny hand over his mouth and smiled affectionately.

"Let's start from the beginning my inquisitive friend. You might want to sit down, this is going to be a long story."

Once Marinette was in the safety of her own room she let out a sigh of relief. The Akuma was defeated, the Lucky Charm fixed everything and everything was back to normal. But as she looked over to her sewing box that secretly hid the Miracle Box she noticed the other Kwamii's gathering around Kaalki the Horse. She was shaking and fluttering around nervously.

"Kaalki what's wrong?" Suddenly the tiny horse realized the Guardian was here and flew to her so quickly she nearly head butted her.

"Oh my, oh me oh my!" Marinette gave her a snack trying to calm her down.

"It's alright, you can tell me what happened." Kaalki shifted her eye back and forth from Trixx to Miranett looking extremely nervous.

"Well, I know we're not supposed to use our powers without a holder but since this was an emergency and it was an order from the Guardian I thought it would be alright." Marinette was starting to worry. She'd had a bad feeling about this after all.

"You're right, I made you break the rules. So that means I have to take responsibility for the consequences." She took a deep breath. "Now, can you tell me what happened after I asked you to make that portal?" Kaalki still looked unsure but she still trusted Marinette to help fix it.

"Well one of the reasons a Kwami is supposed to use their power only with a holder is because we have so much it's hard to focus. Last time my portals opened everywhere but they were still within our world so the Lucky Charm was able to fix it." A sense of dread was now settling in the pit of Marinette's stomach.

"Our world?"

"This time I felt a rip, not a big one mind you, but a deeper one. And I fear…"

"What? You fear what?"

"I fear something came through."

Varian was still half convinced he was dreaming. It would be more logical than Ruddiger turning out to be a magic Fairy Godfather.

"So let me get this straight. If I'm wearing my goggles and say the magic words I become some magical boy with super powers?"

"That's a bit oversimplified but yeah!" Varian frowned but Ruddiger knew why. "I know you haven't had a lot of good experiences with magic but this time you're not alone navigating it." Varian looked up.

"Could…could your magic help my Dad?" Ruddiger looked thoughtful.

"Well my specific power is combining elements with objects but with the right combination anything's possible."

"It almost sounds like you're a magical Alchemist."

"In a way I am. That's why I've always been drawn to Alchemist and Scientist like yourself." Varian smiled at his friends but as a thought crossed his mind it turned into a frown.

"No wait, it's not going to work. Your magic doesn't work in my world, you're just an ordinary raccoon there." Ruddiger frowned as well. It pained him to see his boy so sad and depressed.

"Maybe not but let me tell you something. You're one of the brightest minds I've ever come across. If there's a way to help him I know you'll find it and I'll be here to help however I can." That earned a smile from the boy at least.

"I'll tell you something else, most Kwamis don't have much of a choice in who wields their power but I've always been a bit of a rebel and I can accept or reject the wearer of my Miraculous. So you're the only one who can use my powers right now.

"Come on, what do you say? Wanna give it a try? I know you're itching with curiosity." Varian was in fact curious.

"Ah, what the hell." He thought seeing he was stuck here but at least had some freedom. He placed the goggles onto his face looking out through the slightly scratched lenses.

"So I just say, Ruddiger, Mix it Up? Than-whoa!" He watched as the tiny Raccoon flew into his goggles. They glowed for a moment before smoothing out forming a mask. His prison rags disappeared and a sleek black bodysuit formed around him followed by a gray overcoat similar to the one he wore when he first met Rapunzel. It gave the illusion of black hands and feet like a raccoon. Speaking of which, he felt his hair growing and out of the corner of his eye he saw it change color from black to white. Several black stripes appeared creating a ponytail making his hair resemble a raccoon's tail. Finally a pair of false ears materialized on his head completing the look.

He was so amazed by the transformation it took him a few moments to realize those awful shackles had been torn off leaving his hands free for the first time in ages. He felt better too, stronger even. Spotting a nearby window he crept up to take a look at his reflection. He certainly looked like a raccoon boy but he was still caught off guard seeing someone else's face in the window. Ruddiger had said it was the magic protecting the identity of the user but it was still unnerving. The last thing he observed was the lack of his signature blue hair strip with a black one now in its place. No one would recognize him looking like this. And at that thought he suddenly felt lighter. No one knew him here anyway so he might as well give these new powers a try.

He instinctively leapt from the ground half way up the building he was next to and grabbed the window sill pushing himself up the rest of the way. He stood on the tall roof getting a good look at the city. It must have been the dead of night but it was lit up so bright he could see for miles. He'd never been to a big city before, just Corona's capital lit up by the Princess's birthday lanterns but this was just so beautiful, so breathtaking. So new and full of possibilities. Maybe he was here for a reason, he thought. Maybe he could find a way to help his Dad from here, it was certainly worth a try.

He took off racing to the edge of the building, normally he'd never try something this daring but the energy currently flowing through him was making him feel invincible. He leapt off the edge easily making it to the next building, in fact he almost over shot it. He corrected himself in midair and landed gracefully on his feat. He wondered if this was what Flynn Rider felt like but of course it wasn't…this was better.

He leapt and ran, enjoying the freedom he had lost even before his imprisonment. He had forgotten what it was like to be free. Eventually he settled on a roof with a very nice view of the large metal structure lighting up the night. This was fun and it was good to see how the magic affected him physically but that wasn't all he had. Ruddiger said he'd have a weapon and once again he instinctively knew how to summon it. It was a long staff with a transfiguration circle at the top. Several glowing balls floated within the circle occasionally flashing next to their elemental symbols. Earth, fire, wind and water.

Ruddiger was right again, this thing had the potential to create elements with the right combination. He just wished he had a piece of the rocks or amber to experiment with. But there was one more thing, it was a little more limited but if used right he could-

"Hey YOU!" He was shaken from his thoughts as he turned to see the figure in red, the same one he had seen earlier battling the lighting person. "Surrender Akuma!" He didn't know what an Akuma was but he did know two things. One: she was an authority figure and two: she was after him.

Having been hunted by authoritarian figures for some time now he knew they liked to punch first and ask questions never. He bolted and ran back the way he came. He didn't even stop to look back, no doubt she was chasing him. Sure enough she was using some kind of grappling rope to swing between the building and catch up quickly. He went lower hoping to lessen her advantage but no doubt she knew the lay of the land better than he did. It was only a matter of time before he ran into a dead end.

He had to think fast. He was stronger in this form but she had experience on her side. He'd fight if he had to but if he lost…NO! He was not going back to prison, not yet, his Dad still needed him.

He had lost her for now but she'd be on him in a matter of moments. Suddenly he remembered the special power Ruddiger had told him about. It was powerful but once he used it he would only have five minutes until he transformed back. He had to make this count.

"Bag of Tricks!" He reached into a hidden pocket in his coat and pulled out- "A clock?" He asked in dismay. "How am I supposed to escape with-" But then he had an idea. It was a crazy idea but the red lady was coming and the clock was ticking. He used the fire element from his staff and fused it with the clock. To his surprise it worked and he now had a glowing red orb with a new symbol flashing. So this was the power of fusion. But he had no time to marvel, the red lady had spotted him so he quickly threw the orb at the wall making a hole big enough for him to escape through. He wasted no time and disappeared through the hole.

Ladybug had to hurry; she transformed and headed out, taking Kaalki with her. Hopefully she could find what came through the portal and send it back (somehow). So imagine her surprise finding a stray Akuma holding some kind of weapon. Shadow Moth must have just created him, she was lucky she spotted him before he could do any harm.

"Hey You!" she shouted, catching him off guard. "Surrender Akuma!" But instead of fighting he ran. That was odd, maybe he was leading her into a trap, better be careful. He was slippery too, taking the low ground trying to lose her. Still this felt off, what was this Akuma up to? When she finally caught up to him she realized her mistake. She saw him use a power similar to her own. This wasn't an Akuma, this was a Miraculous holder.

"Wait, Stop!" She called out as he used some glowing ball to make a hole in the wall he was next to. For some reason there was a timer at the top and it was quickly counting down. She raced to the hole but just as she was about to enter the timer ended and the hole disappeared. She crashed into the wall unable to stop her momentum and stumbled back in a daze.

"Are you alright?" Kaalkii asked as Ladybug tried to get her bearings.

"I…I'm fine but can you see whe…where he went?" Kaalki floated through the wall but saw no one. She tried going further but wherever he went he was long gone. Ladybug slumped against the wall and put her head in her hands.

"How could I be so stupid? I should have found another way out instead of having you use your powers. Then I mistake a holder for an Akuma and manage to lose him before I could explain myself." While Kaalki wanted to reassure her there was something the Guardian needed to know.

"Yes, about that holder back there." Ladybug looked up the gears turning in her head.

"Don't tell me. Was he…?"

"The thing that came through the portal? Most likely." Ladybug let out a frustrated sigh.

"We're going to need some help on this one." Kaalki just nodded in agreement.

Varian kept running even after the hole closed up. It looked like he was in another part of the city but he couldn't be sure. He just knew he had to put as much distance between the red lady and himself as possible. All of the sudden the power that had been fueling his flight vanished. He tripped and tumbled to the ground in a different alleyway back to his normal form. The pain from his illness and fever had been forgotten after his magical transformation but now that it was gone he felt worse than he had back in his jail cell. He was dimly aware Ruddiger had left the goggles and was hovering over him looking worried.

"I'm so sorry, Varian. I didn't expect you to get into a fight right away. And with the Ladybug holder no less." Varian tried to pull himself into a sitting possession but his stomach was protesting strongly. "I only meant for this to be a little test run and to free you from those awful shackles. My powers can make you feel better while transformed but they can't actually heal you." The little creature said sadly wishing they could.

"Guess…guess I pushed it to…too far." His head was throbbing and his body felt like he was on fire. He looked down at his unshackled wrist only to see the raw torn skin as pain radiated from them both. He grabbed a sheet from a nearby close line tearing off what he could while trying to wrap his wrist as best he could. Ruddiger was able to help with that a little but for Varian that seemed to be the last of his strength. Ruddiger watched helplessly as his boy lost consciousness.

To be continued…

Next time: Shadow Moth senses some strong emotions very similar to his own. Intrigued, he seeks out this person and is shocked by what he finds.
