October week 1
Somin and Mia
Monday turned around quicker than Somin expected after the slowness that weekend had brought.
Is life gonna be this quick?
She started to make bibimbap, preparing ingredients and thinking about returning the favor to Mia.
I should cook for her more often, she is the sweetest to me. That's a first.
Somin was surprised by her own warm feelings towards this girl. One could call it a sisterly bond.
I always wanted a sister.
...
Mia came back an hour later and a delicious smell greeted her at the door. Somin waved to her, her oversized shirt billowing like a blue sail as she moved her arm in the greeting.
"What is that smell?" Mia asked.
"It's our dinner. I wanted to make something for you since you always cook for us." Somin looked down awkwardly.
Mia always cooked and cooked well. Aside from the times they'd had takeout or Teho had made the dinner by himself.
"Your boy toy isn't joining us?" Somin asked with a smile. Deep down prayed he would.
"Let's just have a girl's night!" Mia announced.
"Girl's night," Somin repeated, meanwhile Mia was already tasting the meal.
"I'll get changed and we'll dig in!" Mia shouted on her way to the bathroom and Somin was thrilled.
I never had a girl's night.
And with that thought, the pink-haired girl opened a bottle of wine and set the dinner on a small table near the sofa.
It's so strange that Mia likes me.
...
The bowl was still hot when Somin sat down, little clouds of steam drifted upwards from it. Her favorite sweet white wine was poured in both glasses. Mia joined her with a towel on her head, drying her hair. A signature dark dress flowed casually on her skin.
She's always so elegant.
Somin envied her grace, effortless talking to others, and cheerful personality.
"Mmm, Somin-ah, I'm so hungry, this tastes delicious," Mia said with her eyes closed, savoring the bite.
"But the pieces aren't neat," Somin teased, thinking of Teho.
"It reminds me of home," Mia said. She was homesick all of the sudden.
"All my friends are so far away." She looked sorrowful. "I like you Somin-ssi, you don't seem to be much of a talker at school, but here you are truly funny," Mia added and Somin choked on her food.
"What?" Surprise was visible on her face.
"I mean, you come across as a silent, closed-up person, but with me and Teho you don't have any problem talking." Mia sipped her wine. As she turned her head to glance at Somin, water droplets fell from her wet hair, glimmering in the light of the apartment.
She looks like a mermaid.
"I'm more comfortable with you two since I already know you the most," Somin explained. "And, I don't want to be noticeable at school, I'm still dreading seeing HIM. You guys make me feel relaxed."
"Ah, you still haven't bumped into your ex? Was the breakup that bad?" Mia tried to get more information.
"Hmm, I think he didn't ever love me back. He..." Somin paused reluctantly, not sure if it was right to continue.
"He was always too harsh on me, though he was my first love and first boyfriend, you know?" Somin confided, surprised to feel happy in her sharing instead of the usual sadness.
Don't be ashamed to share.
"Don't worry I won't tell anybody," Mia assured her.
"He said I was boring him." Somin tucked a strand of her hair behind her ear. "Now it feels like he always wanted me to be someone else. I had never been good enough. When I think about it, I'm not even sure who I am. You know what I mean? Where does the girl he wanted me to be end, and where does the real me start?"
This startled Mia. "Why the hell would you be in a relationship with such a maniac for God's sake?" The perfect girl didn't understand why someone would stand that kind of treatment.
"I'm lacking in the self-esteem department, you know? But I'm adamant about trying to change that. I want to find who I am," Somin said, determined as she drank her wine.
Yeah, I'm not sacrificing this. I should keep my distance from Teho. Somin tried to get a hold of her growing feelings toward him.
Mia smiled at her and grabbed Somin's chin, tipping it up. "That's right Somin, never let a boy treat you like trash. They should only adore you and love the real you! Not some fucking idea of what you should be."
"How do you feel about the weekend though?" Mia asked, being overly excited for the getaway herself.
"Is it this weekend?" Somin panicked.
"Yeah, I'm leaving early to help with preparations," Mia explained.
"Shit, I don't know what I'm gonna do," Somin said.
"I'll have your back, don't worry. I'll be close and we can deal with it together, if you want?" the dancer offered.
"I'd love that," Somin said, still apprehensive.
"We'll have so much fun, wait and see!" Mia proclaimed.
"I like you, Mia." Somin softly smiled.
Mia smiled back, "I like you too, Somin!" She hugged the fragile girl tightly.
It brought back the picture of shy brown eyes hidden in ruffled blonde hair.
We all have our secrets.
