Nessarose woke up that morning with a very big smile on her face.

Today is her birthday! She is finally 18!

She has always loved her birthdays because every year they were all special! She was given extravagant gifts from her father, having big parties and having her favorite flavored cake every year which was red velvet.

She knows that today will be just like the other birthdays she had but this time it has to be the best! 18 years is very special.

She sat up stretching her arms and swung her legs over and used her arms with her strength to lift herself carefully into her wheelchair that's on level next to the bed. She puts her safety belt on around her waist, securing her legs against the leg rest and wheeled herself to her desk, opening the drawer finding a mirror and her hairbrush and began brushing her brunette hair straight while looking in the mirror.

There was a knock on the door and Nessa calls, "Come in?"

The door opens revealing Madame Morrible.

"Good morning Miss Nessarose," she greets. "I see you are nearly ready for class today."

"Yes, I am," replies Nessa.

After Nessa was done brushing, she puts her mirror down and Madame Morrible, like every morning, casts a small spell to transfigure Nessa's clothes from her nightgown and into her uniform.

"Thank you Madame."

"Pleasure dearie. Now have a wonderful day, I must get to my office, make sure you close the door on the way out when you are ready to leave," the headmistress said leaving the private compartment door open for Nessa to wheel out.

Nessa's face fell a little. She thought Madame Morrible knew that it was her birthday since she lives with her.

But it was only Madame Morrible. She's a very busy woman. She runs the school. She obviously can't keep track of all students including Nessa's sister.

She decided to go find her friends and sister. She is so sure that they knew that it was her birthday.

With that in mind, Nessarose wheeled out of the private compartment and closed the door. She let her chair roll and roll down he hallways, out the door and onto the school grounds where other students are chatting away, getting to class or grabbing breakfast.

She heads to her first class of the day which was politics and saw Boq already sitting at his desk scribbling on paper.

"Good morning Boq," she said wheeling over to sit next to him.

"Good morning Nessa," he responds his eyes not taking off the paper.

Nessa leaned back in her chair in silence.

Does he remember her birthday?

"Well?"

Boq still didn't look up. "Well what?"

"Aren't you forgetting something?"

The Munchkin started thinking finally taking his eyes off the paper but shook his head. "I don't think so."

Nessa looked sad as her ex-boyfriend continued to write before the politics professor came in to start the lecture.

An hour later, after class got out, it was just Boq and Nessa.

"There will be days that we get last minute essays and such," he sighs putting books in his bag while she tries to start a conversation to make him remember.

"Speaking of days, do you know what today is?" She asked with a hopeful smile.

Boq's eyebrows furrowed. "Tuesday?"

The smile on Nessa's face turned into a frown.

"But what else? Surely you know what today is! When I dated you, I told you about it-"

The Munchkin thought for a moment while she was talking before his eyes widened cutting her off.

"Oh my Oz! Today is the day I have to hand my philosophy report in and I left it in my dorm! Thank you for reminding me Nessa!"

Boq ran off leaving Nessa behind alone in the classroom.

Not even her ex-boyfriend remembers. Maybe he's just too busy to remember?

She wheeled out of the classroom and onto the courtyard. It was lunch hour and that was where most of the student body are at that time. She decided to move on to someone who cares or even acknowledge her.

She looks through a crowd finding Fiyero and Avaric sitting on a bench.

Maybe either of them will remember. They're her friends after all.

"Good morning Avaric. Fiyero." She greets wheeling over to the boys who are playing chess.

"Hey," the both reply at the same time looking at the chessboard busy with their game.

Nessa then asked, "What day is today?" Surely they would remember.

"Just another boring Tuesday that's for sure," Fiyero answers before moving his chess piece.

"No, I mean what day is it?" She asked hoping for the right answer.

"I'm sorry Nessa but we can't talk right now! We're trying to focus," Avaric said moving his piece across the board.

"Have you seen Elphaba by any chance Fiyero?" Nessa asked trying to get his attention. "Was today the day you two have history?"

The prince finally looked up after moving his piece. "Well, apparently I didn't see her this morning. It's not like her to skip class."

He was right. Her sister would never miss a class. Especially when she was ill, tired or had bad days and needed to be alone. But why today did she skip?

Just as Nessa was about to say something, Avaric made his move. "Checkmate!"

Fiyero whined that he lost. "Seriously?! That was not the move I learned from the Vinkus!"

"Well this isn't Vinkun chess," Avaric retorts with a smug victory grin on his face.

"Doesn't matter! It's not how you move it!"

"Yes it is!"

"No it isn't!"

"Yes it is!"

"No it isn't!"

The wheelchair bound sighe deciding to leave and rolled away from the argument. She looked at the clock and saw that lunch hour was ending and she needs to get to algebra.

After class was over, she goes on a search for Galinda and Elphaba. They have got to remember her birthday. She decides to try Galinda first after spotting her by the center fountain.

She wheels herself over to Galinda who is chatting with Shenshen and Milla very excited. They're her friends too so they should know it's her birthday.

"Afternoon ladies," she said smiling.

Galinda waves enthusiastically. "Hi Nessa!"

"Afternoon Miss Nessarose," Milla replies nicely.

Shenshen only says waving and smiling, "Hi!"

Nessa's face fell a little. It looks like they don't remember either. She thinks for a moment and maybe starting the conversation will get them to remember.

"What've you all been up to?" Asked Nessa sounding hopeful.

Galinda squeals very excited. "We're just talking about the new spring line we just saw at Ozcchi! The colors are so amazing!"

"They are! The purple is my favorite," Milla gushes. "I love the ruffles on the bottom and on the sleeves!"

Nessa frowned. It's clear that they don't remember her birthday.

She tried at one more attempt. "Do you three know what today is?"

"Oh yes!" Exclaimed Shenshen.

"Indeed," Agreed Milla.

"Today is… Wait for it…"

Nessa's eyes lit up. They do remember? It's about time-

"OZIAN FASHION DAY!" The girls screamed in joy.

That made Nessarose's heart break. Now it's clear that no one of her friends remembers. She looked down to her lap trying to fight back the tears that are fighting to come out. The girls were so excited that they didn't notice how upset she is.

"Oh look at the time!" Milla gasped pointing at the clock.

"We better go if we want to find something nice to wear, have a good day Nessa," Galinda said quickly standing up and the girls are about to walk away but Nessa stopped them.

"Wait Galinda? Have you seen my sister?"

The blonde thought for a moment before answering, "Actually I haven't seen her all day. She must be studying in the library again. You know how she is."

The wheelchair bound girl sighed, "I guess…"

"Oh good. Could you go find her for me? Thank you Nessa!"

Nessa watched as the girls walked away laughing and rolled away from the fountain now depressed losing hope.

As the day wore on and it was nearing evening, Nessarose continues wheeling across campus alone looking for her sister. Of course she remembers. She has to remember. She tried the library but was told by the librarian she wasn't around which was very odd.

She decided to try the poppy fields which was otherwise known as Elphaba's secret spot but she wasn't there either.

And when she grabbed dinner in the cafeteria hall, she stayed at the table where the group usually sits. She had waited a long time for her sister and friends but surprisingly none of them came to the table. Her eyes kept looking around and she haven't seen them anywhere.

Were they avoiding her or something?

Tears were brimming her brown eyes again and tries holding them back. She wasn't even in the mood to eat anymore and decided to head back to her compartment for a night in alone.

If nobody's going to celebrate her birthday, then she's just going to celebrate it all by herself. In all honestly, after thinking about it, it's better having a party of one rather than having no birthday at all.

She wheeled herself to Ozbucks nearby and approached the counter where the cashier was waiting while closing up.

"May I help you?" The cashier asked ready to order.

"Yes. I'd like a cupcake please," Nessa replies looking at the little display.

"What kind of flavor?"

"Doesn't matter to me," she said sadly sniffling a little wiping her tears before he noticed. "I don't really care."

The cashier went over to the ice box and pulled out a vanilla bean cupcake with frosting on the top. He puts it in a box and gives it to her.

"Will there be anything else?"

Nessa shook her head sadly.

"Then you may have a good rest of the day," he said about to walk away.

"But wait? Was I supposed to pay for this?" The wheelchair bound girl asked holding up the cupcake box.

"Actually it's free," he replies with a smile. "Consider it as a gift."

Her eyes lit up. "Really?"

"Yes, for a special girl like you," said the cashier kindly. "You look like you needed it."

Nessa smiled back blushing a little. "Thank you so much."

"You're very welcome," he replies as she wheels away and out of the cafe.

At least someone cares.

Her wheelchair rolls down the sidewalk as she passes by every street lamp that has just been turned on when the sun has set. She continued rolling on until she had made it to Madame Morrible's private compartment with her cupcake in hand and set it down on her small desk.

Now all she needs is a candle, Nessa searched around every cabinet within reach. She opened every cupboard until she found a tall skinny red candle laying beside the books and other junk.

She picked it up and looked at it. It obviously wasn't a birthday candle but it was better than nothing.

She found matches in the cupboard amongst the junk and used her other hand to pick it up.

Placing the items on her lap and using her free hands, she wheeled herself back to the desk where the cupcake is and put the candle on top sticking it in the frosting and holding it up.

She scraped the match and light started to ignite. She has the match touch the candle, the wick lights itself up.

She blows the match to avoid having anything catch on fire before staring at the candle.

The flame moves very steadily as Nessa starts singing to herself sounding depressed.

"Happy birthday to me… Happy birthday to me… Happy birthday dear Nessie… Happy birthday to me…"

She gave a long sad sigh staring at the candle.

What can she wish for?

After thinking for a moment, she closed her eyes and quietly makes a wish.

"I wish that my whole life was different…"

She blew the candle out and watched as the flame extinguished.

She sighed again. If only all wishes can come true.

Nessa looked at the clock seeing that it was nearly curfew and decided to turn in early.

She wheeled over to her bed and unbuckled her safety belt before using all her strength in her arms to push herself up and onto bed.

She decided not to even bother wearing her nightclothes and just laid down.

"Hmmmm… If only," she murmurs closing her eyes wanting the day to end.

Unbeknownst to her, the wick on the candle suddenly ignited again and was sparkling…
