More than just Murder
September 6, Gatewater Hotel – Room 303
J walks into the hotel room looking around it was quite fancy, she could see why people would stay here but then is surprised by Kitten Walker in the room who spots her.
"Well! Hello there, cutie." Kitten said smiling.
"Ummm… hi." J said awkwardly waving and thinks 'Smooth, J, real smooth.'
"You're the lawyer, aren't you? The detective drone told me…" Kitten said smiling "He said 'Please don't say nothing to that lawyer!' Tee hee!"
'Memo to myself: thank Detective N for making my job harder.' J thinks to herself.
"Gee! This all like something out of a movie!" Kitten said amazed. "It's all so exciting I can hardly contain myself! Ooh! Let me go freshen up so I can look the part of the beautiful eyewitness!" She then leaves to the bathroom.
'I pity the lawyer that had to cross-examine this one' J thinking sighing. She decides to have a poke around and looks to the window "Hmmm the late summer sunlight streams through the window. There's the Yuki & Co. Law Offices building, of course. You can see the inside of the room clearly from here. I think it would be a little difficult to recognize a face from this distance, through."
J then looks down at the table by the window and sees what's on it "A bottle of champagne and two glasses are on the table. Somebody must be staying with her." A glint catches her eye and he looks to see something sticking out of a nearby draw.
'There's a screwdriver stuck in this drawer.' J thought going to it. 'I wonder what's inside? Let's take a look…' She reaches for it.
"Hey! H-h-hey!" Kitten is heard saying as she re-enters the room looking a bit annoyed "What are you doing?! No touching! Oooh. Bad drone!" She calms down a bit "Y-you really shouldn't pry around in other people's rooms, now. You wouldn't want to make me upset, would you?"
'Upset?! I thought she was going to explode for a second there!' J thought looking concerned 'I wonder what could be inside the drawer?' She then asked "Do you think you could tell me something? I need you to describe what you observed at the time of the incident."
"Ooh. 'Observe', 'incident'! You sound just like a lawyer in the movies!" Kitten said giggling. "I like someone with a big…. vocabulary."
'Ummm… Better not encourage her.' J thinking mentally gulping and said "Er… you know that thing that occur… um… happed the other day? The bad thing? What did you see when it happened? I don't suppose you could tell me about it? Pretty please?"
"Let me see… Um, well… Dream on!" Kitten said to her "If you want to know, you'll just have to come to court tomorrow, Miss. Lawyer!"
'Oh boy.' J thinks sighing and asked "Um, could you…. Just who exactly are you?"
"Oooh, Miss. Lawyer! Are you hitting on me?" Kitten said giggling
"N-n-no! Hey! I'm just doing my job here!" J said with a bit of flush on her LED screen.
"Tee hee! You know, you're cute when you blush." Kitten giggles
'Believe me, this is the first time in my life I've blushed this much…' J thinks face screening blushing more "Umm… eh heh. Right… can you just tell me what it is you do?"
"Well…No! Tee hee! And you had your little hopes up, didn't you!" Kitten said giggling.
'Oh boy' J thinks and asked "I see there are two glasses on the table. Is someone staying here with you?"
"Oooh! What amazing powers of observation!" Kitten said smiling "You much be one of those famous detectives, like on television!"
"Oh, no, not me, I'm, er, just a lawyer!" J chuckles a bit.
"Say, Miss. Big Detective, why don't you go look for clues…in the garbage? Hmm?" Kitten said firmly "Miss. Walker doesn't like nosey little lawyers…Hmph!"
'Oh boy' J thinks again as she is beginning to hate this person. She chooses to go back to Ansem's Law Offices to see if Ansem is there now.
J walks into the office room and looks around seeing no one. 'Hmmm… seems like Mr. Ansem is out. Well, maybe I should just wait here for him to come back.'
"Ah-HEEEM!" Someone lets out clearing there throught
'If that wasn't the most over-the-top clearing of the throat I've ever heard!' J thinks surprised. She looks to see a blue eyed, blond haired and bearded man wearing a suit with a white jacket, black pants, blue tie and a red scarf standing there. J knew this was Ansem the Wise, the head lawyer of this law office.
"Ah hah! So, you're the one they say has been looking for me?" Ansem said smiling.
"Uh… y-yes, that's me!" J said surprised 'He looks even… grander than I imagined!'
"Hmmm…? That badge on you collar…?" Ansem said looking at yellow Attorney Badge on J's coat. "Ah, so you're a lawyer, are you now?"
"Y-yes, well… yes." J said rubbing her head.
"And what do you want?" Ansem asked sitting on the couch and J sits on the couch across from him. He prepares some tea for him and oil for her "I'm not particularly busy these days… Please, proceed!"
'Not busy…? Then how come no one could get in touch with you?' J thinks confused
"Hmmm? Is something the matter?" Ansem asked her confused. "You came to see the one-and-only Ansem the Wise, did you not? Well, here I am, girl! What do you want? Out with it!"
"Um… w-well sir, actually, it's about Jaden. Jaden Yuki." J said to him
Ansem's proud face turned to look concerned and worried as well a nervous as he said "Ah… yes. Jaden Yuki. Go on."
'Huh? Why the strange reaction?' J thought confused.
"A-cha-cha. I'm really quite busy here, dear." Ansem said to her quickly "I can't go taking cases on a day's notice! No, it's quite impossible."
"W-Wait a second!" J said in shock and asked "How did you know the trial was tomorrow?!"
"Urk! Ahem." Ansem said surprised and recomposes "A-anyway…I'm afraid it's entirely impossible for me to represent her. Sorry. End of discussion."
'What's going on?! He refused me before I even got a chance to ask him! What do I tell Jaden…?' J thought confused and asked "How can you just refuse like that! Please, tell me why you won't take the case!"
"Hmm? Eh! Well, you see it's just… I'm very busy, you see" Ansem said a bit uncomfortable.
"But the client is Terra Yuki's brother!" J told him.
"Hmmmm…." Ansem said with a guilty look.
"Terra trusted you… He knew his brother would be in good hands." J told him.
"Yes, yes, of course I know that." Ansem said nodding. "However! I'm sorry but, I must refuse. Sorry. Good-bye."
"Jerk." J said glaring. "Fine. I don't have time to argue with you anyway. I'll go look elsewhere." She stands to leave.
Ansem grumbles a bit and said "…Think not."
"Huh? Did you say something?" J asked stopping looking confused.
"I think not, I said." Ansem said and sipped some tea.
"Wh-what do you mean?" J asked surprised sitting back down.
"I'm terribly, terribly sorry." Ansem said sighing. "But I'm afraid that no lawyer worth their salt will take on this particular case. Terribly sorry, my lady."
"Why?!" J asked in shock.
"I…. I cannot say." Ansem said looking guilty. "I beg you pardon, but could you leave? Now? I've nothing more to discuss with you."
'What's going on here?!' J thought in shock "Just a few more things. How did you exactly know Terra Yuki…?"
Ansem remains quiet and said "He… worked here. A long time ago. Quite the apprentice, that one. Learned my techniques in the blink of an eye! He left one day, quite suddenly…He had a mission, you see."
"A 'mission'?" J asked curious and sips her oil.
"You could see it in his eyes." Ansem said nodding as he sips his tea. "He followed it with a burning passion. Never looked back, that one."
J nods and looks at the large painting Ansem had in his office which depected a white door in a black void and a lone person walking to it and said "That's…. quite a painting."
"Ah! You noticed!" Ansem said sounding proud like he did at the start of it. "It's my pride and joy! It's called the Door in the Darkness. Impressive, isn't it? Well? ISN'T IT! The color of the void! The hue of the door! The pose of the lone figure! It's worth at least three million credits. I have no intention of parting with it, of course. No, I won't sell it! Not even to you!"
'I wasn't interested…' J thought sweatdropping.
"It's not for sale!" Ansem said firmly.
"I'm not buying!" J shouts out and thinks 'Geez! Medical benefits!' She then said "Well I best be going"
"Yes, well see you later." Ansem said nodding "Again sorry but I can't take the case."
J nods and sighs as she leave, she best go tell Jaden the bad news. She heads back.
September 6, 3:42 PM, Detention Center, Visitor's Room
J walks in and sits down where Jaden was still sat and is still looking sad. She said, "Hey there."
Jaden looks up seeing J and perks up asking smiling "Oh! You're back! Did you find the lawyer?"
"Um… well…" J said thinking on what to tell him "Well, see…" She decides to be honest "I… I really don't think you should use that guy. He… didn't seem healthy. He was overworked and extremely tired!"
Jaden looks sad and asked her "What really happened?" J remains quiet, clear Jaden saw through her made up excuse "You don't mean… He refused to help?"
"Eek." J said at that.
Jaden gets sadder and said "I see. I've been abandoned, then."
"What about your family?" J asked him curious.
"I only had my brother." Jaden said sadly "My mother died when I was very young. And I don't know where my father is."
'Don't know…? So, he could still be alive?' J thinks on that "Tell me more about your father."
"The members of my family have been keyblade warriors for generations." Jaden explained "They say a lot of spiritual power runs through our blood and our hearts are quite strong. About fifteen years ago, our family was involved in an… incident." He looks down getting a bit upset "There was a man, and he… he…He ruined our father's life."
'Ruined…?' J thinks surprised
"After that, he disappeared." Jaden continues "Several years after that, my brother announced he would 'become a lawyer; and he left the mountain."
J remained quiet and asked "So, you live by yourself?"
"Yes. I've gotten used to it." Jaden said smiling "Oh, also…I had to become independent, or I would lose my powers!"
'I feel bad for him, all by himself up on that mountain…' J thinks sadly. She then asked "So, who was this man who, um, 'ruined' your father?"
Jaden gets sad and explained "About 15 years ago… there was an unusual murder case. It made quite a stir, everyone was talking about it, apparently. The police troopers were running out of leads, and they were getting desperate…"
"Wait… they didn't use a keyblade warrior, did they?" J asked surprised.
"The police trooper convinced my father to try to contact the victim." Jaden said sadly.
"Wow…So, what happened?" J asked.
"The case was solved… we thought." Jaden replied.
"You 'thought'…?" J asked confused.
"The person my father helped the police capture was innocent." Jaden said sadly surprising J "The police troopers's consultation with a keyblade warrior had all been carried out in secret, of course. But…A man found out about it and leaked it to the press. He told all the papers that my father was a fraud, and the media jumped on it big time. He… my father… became the laughingstock of the nation."
"I see." J said nodding
Jaden remains quite and said "Jack…"
"Excuse me?" J asked confused
"That was his name. My brother told me." Jaden explained.
"Jack? Hmmm…" J said thinking on that, not a lot to go on but he would be a person of interest.
"Just a little longer now before the state-appointed lawyer comes, I guess…" Jaden said smiling a bit as he checks the time.
J looks at the clock and thinks '4:00 PM. Time's up. What should I do? Do I Just leave him and go home…?' She thinks on it but the answer was obvious and looks at Jaden determined "I've made up my mind! I'm going to defend you whether you want me to or not!"
Jaden hearing that was surprised and asked "Why?"
"Why? Well…" J said and thinks 'No one is as sad as a person without any friend. I know…. I've been there. A long time ago.' We see a brief flashback of J when she was mentally younger crying and she thinks 'Why did I become a lawyer in the first place….? Because someone has to look out for the people who have no one on their side.'
"Jaden…I won't abandon you. You can count on me." J said to Jaden.
"That's very kind of you…" Jaden said in shock as he tears up a bit and wipes his eyes with a tissue.
J smiles and said "Well! Let's fight this one and get you out of here!"
"R-right!" Jaden said smiling "Thank you!"
'Phew, he smiled genially at last. He looks like an entirely different person!' J thinks smiling and asked "One last question… You are innocent, right?"
"Yes! And I trust you…So you trust me, too, okay?" Jaden said nodding.
"It's a deal." J said nodding 'So what next…There is something that's been bugging me…' She thinks back to Kitten and the hotel room 'Just what was inside that strange woman's drawer? It was when I tried to looking into the drawer that she got all defensive. There has to be something in there!'
Before J decides to check it she presents Jaden his cellphone and said "Hey, I got your cell phone back."
Jaden gets sad and said "Oh! Say…Can I listen to my brother's voice?"
J nods and plays the recorded message and looks at Jaden and thinks 'Jaden's eyes closed…. He listened to every word with such intensity…It didn't take long for tears to begin to roll down his cheeks.' She sighs sadly.
"Thank you." Jaden said sadly.
"I will see you soon Jaden" J said nodding and stands and begins to leave and head back to the Tipton Hotel.
J walks back into the room and was surprised when a Servant droid in a suit holding a tea tray was in the room, this droid had a name badge indicating he was an employee of this hotel.
"Good afternoon, ma'm!" The Servant Droid said smiling.
"Excuse me, you are…?" J asked confused.
"Ah, I beg your pardon, ma'm!" The Servant Droid said nodding. I am a servant droid bellboy of this establishment at your service, ma'm." He bows his head.
"Oh, right." J said nodding.
"I've just come up to deliver room service, ma'm." The Servant Droid explained.
"Um…. do you know where Miss Walker might be?" J asked him.
"Ah. I believe our guess Miss Walker is currently using the, er, facilities…?" The Servant Droid said "If you've no need of anything, I'll be taking my leave. Please stay as long as you like. Enjoy…"
"Yeah…" J said nodding confused and sees the droid begins to leave "Wait… no! Hey!" She sees him leave 'Why does it seem like every time I walk into this room I end up embarrassing myself?' She thinks but then realizes 'Wait… now's my chance to snoop around a bit'
"Ah, I almost forgot!" The Servant Droid said returning suddenly.
"Ah! Y-you came back quick!" J said jumping
"Might I ask you to inform Miss Walker that there is a message for her?" The Servant droid said, "Please tell her that Mr. Jack, of Hyperion phoned."
"Oh, right. Sure." J said nodding to him and the droid leaves. 'Mr. Jack…. of Hyperion? Where have I heard that name?'
J then flashes back to her earlier talk with Jaden who sadly said "Jack…That was his name. My brother told me."
'Jack was the name of the guy who ruined Terra and Jaden's father!' J thought in shock 'Could this be a coincidence though?'
J decided to go to the draw to finally see what Kitten was hiding "That screwdriver is still sticking out of that half-open drawer. Now's my chance to see what's inside!" She pulls it out and was surprised "What do we have here!"
She pulls out a small black box with two black wires "A… wiretap? Hmm! What would a woman like her be doing with a thing like this?" She adds this into her virtual Court Record.
"There is definitely something suspicious about this 'Miss Walker'!" J said looking firm "Why would she have something like this in her hotel room? There's a story behind all this, I know it!"
"Okay…I'll be using this bit of evidence in tomorrow's trial, that's for sure." J said with a nod "For Jaden's sake…I'll get to this woman's bottom! Wait... I mean… gah cooperate retreat you know what I mean."
"Oh, servant droid…? Still there?" Kitten said from the bathroom.
'Uh oh, time to book it!' J thinks as she begins to quickly leave 'I look forward to tangoing with you tomorrow, Miss Walker! In court!"
She had one night to get prepared for her first court battle without her mentor by her side and be going against the Golden Guard Prosecutor himself. This will not be an easy battle. But she will do it, to prove Jaden's innocence.
The battle will begin soon, will J be able to prove Jaden's innocence and is there more to this case with the mysterious Jack person.
