Chapter 4: Showdown In Petalburg Woods! First Encounter With Team Aqua!

As the party went to enter Petalburg Woods, the girls noticed Michael's expression.

Weiss - "You ok there Michael?"

Michael - "I'm fine Weiss. Just a feeling that this forest encounter's gonna be very different this time."

Ruby - "What makes you say that?"

Michael - "Just a gut feeling."

Soon they finally entered Petalburg Woods. Upon entering, Michael caught a Shroomish and a Slakoth, the latter of which was also caught by Pinkie.

Pinkie - "Yay I got a Slakoth!"

Ruby - "You sure about having a Slaking Pinkie?"

Pinkie - "Of course. Sure, his Truant ability makes him attack every other turn, but he's still a powerhouse."

Michael - "Pinkie's not wrong. In fact, I say the Normal-Type side of your full team is done already."

Weiss - "You think so?"

Michael - "Yes. After all, pretty hard to beat a Trainer that has the trio of Kangaskhan, Tauros, and Slaking, even WITH Fighting-Types."

Whitney - "Kinda hard to argue there."

Clair - "By the way Michael. What are you looking at?"

Michael - "Oh just what Ruby, Weiss, and Pinkie, along with the rest of the girls, have for their final teams so far."

Pinkie - "Have any of us gotten a full team of 6 yet?"

Michael - "Well Rarity has. But..."

Bae - "But...?"

Michael - "Well I got a note from her saying that the Golem and Rhyperior on her final team are just stand-ins."

Ruby - "Rarity asked me if she could have Probopass. I said sure since I already have Aggron. Along with the fact that Probopass's pre-evolved form, Nosepass, is a pure Rock-Type anyway."

Michael - "Ok so she'll still need a third Ground-Type for balance."

Weiss - "So you're hoping we have some well-balanced teams?"

Michael - "In a sense, yes. While you, Ruby, and Yang all specify in a single Type, so you three can let your Pokémon have any secondary Type to cover for weaknesses. But as for the others, like Pinkie, you girls have to do three Pokémon of both Types you use, or in Fluttershy's case, two Pokémon of all three Types."

Bae - "For example?"

Michael - "Well then let's use Weiss's Ice-Types. You remember what Ice-Types are weak to Weiss?"

Weiss - "Fire, Fighting, Rock, and Steel."

Michael - "Correct. Now you already have counter to three of those weaknesses."

Ruby - "She does?"

Weiss - "Of course I do. My Lapras covers Fire and Rock due to her Water-Typing. And Alolan Ninetales covers Fighting. Sadly, I still haven't found a Pokémon to cover steel yet. No offense Ruby."

Ruby - "None taken."

Michael - "Speaking of you Ruby. You know what Types Steel is weak to, right?"

Ruby - "Fire and Fighting like Weiss, along with Ground."

Michael - "And do you have counters for them?"

Ruby - "I do. All three of them, in fact. Aggron's Rock-Typing covers Fire, Alolan Sandslash's Ice-Typing covers Ground, and the Mawile I'm gonna catch will cover Fighting with her Fairy-Typing."

Michael - "That's very well thought out Ruby."

Ruby - "Hehe. Thanks Michael."

Pinkie - "Now that I think about it, I believe I have two of my three Type weaknesses covered already."

Whitney - "Which ones?"

Pinkie - "Normal's lone weakness to Fighting, and Water's weakness to Grass. And the Pokémon that covers them both is Wingull due to her Flying-Type."

Michael - "Bet you'll be super happy once Wingull evolves into Pelipper."

Pinkie - "You bet I will!"

The party then continued their way through Petalburg Woods. As they got further into the forest, they came across a man with brown hair. He was also wearing a green suit and seemed to be searching for something.

? - "Hmmm... Not a one to be found..."

Michael - "Excuse me, sir?"

The man then turned to see Michael calling out to him.

Michael - "Are you looking for something sir?"

? - "I am. Oh. Name's Jimmy by the way."

Michael - "I'm Michael. And these are my friends."

Girls - "Hello."

Jimmy - "Nice to meet you all as well. As for what I'm looking for. Have any of you seen a Pokémon called Shroomish around here? I really love that Pokémon."

Michael - "Well none of us are from Hoenn. But Shroomish SHOULD be found in Petalburg Woods regardless."

Jimmy - "Oh well that's good to know. Thank you."

Michael - "Not at all Jimmy."

Then what looked like a thug in some kind of pirate outfit appeared behind Jimmy.

Thug - "I was gonna ambush you, but you had to dawdle in Petalburg Woods forever, didn't you? I got sick of waiting, so here I am!"

The thug then suddenly got in Jimmy's face.

Thug - "You! Devon Researcher! Hand over those papers!"

Jimmy then panicked and fled behind the party.

Jimmy - "You're a Pokémon Trainer, aren't you Michael? You've got to help me, please!"

Michael - "Not a problem Jimmy. Leave this to me."

Michael walked forward to confront the thug.

Thug - "Huh? What do you think you're doing? What, you're going to protect him? No one who crosses Team Aqua gets any mercy, not even a kid!"

Michael soon quickly realized that he was fighting a Team Aqua Grunt. Regardless, he knew he had to defend Jimmy.

Team Aqua Grunt - "Go Poochyena!"

Michael - "Buneary I choose you!"

Michael Masi (Buneary)(Soothe Bell) Vs. Team Aqua Grunt (Poochyena)

Turn #1

Michael - "Battle Disk is useless for right now cause it's only a 1v1. Good thing Buneary only knows Normal-Type moves right now. Use Quick Attack!"

Team Aqua Grunt - "Use Howl to get stronger!"

Quick Attack's Current Power: 40 + 20 = 60

Poochyena: Attack +1

Buneary rushed at Poochyena, striking him and knocking the pure Dark-Type in a single strike.

Team Aqua Grunt - "You're kidding me! You're tough!"

(Music Ends)

The Team Aqua Grunt returned Poochyena in bitter defeat.

Team Aqua Grunt - "Grrr... You've got some nerve meddling with Team Aqua! Come on and battle me again! I wish I could say that, but I'm out of Pokémon... And, hey, we of Team Aqua are also after something in Rustboro. I'll let you go today!"

The grunt then ran off. Jimmy, meanwhile finally came out from behind the girls.

Jimmy - "Whew... That was awfully close! Thanks to you Michael, he didn't rob me of these important papers."

Michael - "Not a problem Jimmy."

Jimmy - "And here, an Ultra Ball as my thanks!"

Michael happily took the Ultra Ball from Jimmy.

Ruby - "Hey, didn't that Team Aqua Grunt say they were after something in Rustboro, too?"

Jimmy then suddenly went pale at hearing Ruby's words and realized what the grunt had meant.

Jimmy - "Uh-oh! It's a crisis! I can't be wasting time!"

Jimmy then sped off as well in the same direction of the Team Aqua Grunt did.

Weiss - "Well that just happened."

Michael - "Agreed. Anyway, let's get out of the forest before anything else happens."

Pinkie - "Agreed."

Soon the party made their way out of Petalburg Woods and onto the Northern side of Route 104, then crossed a lake and finally arrived in Rustboro City.
